Dangerous thoughts, dangerous motives, dangerous circumstances…everything about this night was dangerous and Damien was unable to do anything about it. He wanted to spend time with Taylor, he wanted to make sure she was alright tonight, but at the same time, he suddenly found that he had to protect her from himself too. He was usually so much more able to control his feelings and desires, but just as Taylor had reached breaking point with the problems in her life, Damien was reaching the same point in regards to the emotions he had denied for the longest of times now. It didn’t help that her teasing tones only spurred those feelings on, bringing them trickling to the surface ready to burst out like a geyser and potentially ruin the twenty five year long friendship the two had formed and stuck at. ‘Death by Taylor’ did sound like it would be one hell of a way to go, but at the same time Damien didn’t think she meant in quite in the way he would have liked. Plus, he was thirty and how would that look on his gravestone. Loving son, keen lawyer and killed by the woman he loved and her need to beat him in a drinking contest.
He watched in stunned silence as Tay went ahead and ordered them some ‘real’ drinks, smiling friendly at the bartender who seemed a little less flustered than when she had reeled off her assortment of demands earlier. He saw the guys looking over at the young doctor before they approached and it took every ounce of self-control not to tell them to back off, or more honestly, show them how to back off. There was a flash of jealous rage when this kid slipped his arm around Taylor’s slender waist. He didn’t miss the look she shot the guy and when she straightened up to her full height, he could’ve sworn he saw the kid swallow his own tongue. Stooped over the bar, Taylor probably looked inviting, but the pumps she wore definitely pushed her over the six foot marker and this kid was barely 6ft1. It irked him when he had seen her with Drake and the brunette was taller than him, though that was part of his jealousy for the male doctor having what he didn’t; Taylor. Damien snapped out of it though when he felt Taylor’s hand on him again, her fingers running over the cotton on his chest, her arm wrapping tightly around his back. Reflexively, his hand found her hip and lingered there, a smirk growing on his face when he saw the arrogant smile of the kid fade when Taylor shot him down in a rather harsh manner. That was definitely going to bruise his ego for some time! She turned to him, now smiling and his breath hitched when he realised how close they were. He could feel her breath washing over his skin, teasing his lips. His eyes stared into hers and he tightened his hold on her body, not wanting to let her go, but knowing that this could all too well destroy them. When her eyes flicked to his lips and he felt her fingers clench around his shirt, he almost whimpered, longing her to make the move he was too scared to make. Alas, reality pulled them apart and Damien needed more than a moment to regain his control again as Taylor moved from his hold. She had been so close, he didn’t even need to move, just press his lips to hers…dammit. He ran his fingers through his short hair and managed a small smile at Taylor handed him the cold beer. What he needed was a cold shower, but this would be the closest he would get right now and within seconds, he had chugged half the bottle down, letting out a rather manish burp that would make his old fraternity proud. “Oops, sorry.” He said, though he wasn’t sure that Taylor would hear his apology over the music and the far off look in her wide eyes. Did she realise what had almost happened? Surely she did, right? That moment had been between them both and wasn’t at all one sided, right?
He looked at her, thinking there was something wrong until he saw the size of the grin on her face. So, apparently this was Taylor’s kind of song? Her music taste definitely hadn’t changed then, that was for sure. He smiled back at her, not recognising the song himself. The sparks hit him again when she grabbed his hand and he finished off the dregs of beer, dropping the bottle onto a table they passed before they were just two more bodies on the dance floor. Feigning hurt, he shot Taylor another of those challenging looks. “I’m a great dancer, just you watch.” His eyes, however, were fixed on her moving body, the sway of her hips as she moved to the beat, the centre of her movement as she shifted her weight, the rhythm clearly guiding her. It took him a moment, but he fell into the beat, not dancing quite as elegantly as some people might have done, but he was dancing nevertheless.

What she needed was a moment to step back, think things through and maybe she’d slowly begin to understand everything that was happening right now, last week, last month, last year…Taylor, whilst locking away her emotions, always managed to push back the things she needed to sit down and think through, understand and process in a healthy manner. Yet, this thing with Damien was not something she could easily push away. It was something that had been playing with her heartstrings since she was a teenager. That night in DC had meant something. It wasn’t a quickie or a fling, but something with genuine love and meaning behind it and Taylor had spent the last eight years fearful that no one would ever make her feel like that again. How do you bring something like that up in conversation though? You can’t. She was scared of knowing the truth. If Damien loved her like he had said that night, then what had the last eight years been about? Plus, she didn’t think she could handle someone caring about her so much, loving her like there was no tomorrow. She’d never been in the long term relationship, never felt so much emotion for one person…not even Drake. The only person she’d ever said those terrifying words to had been Damien on that single night. People grow out of love though and she had done that, she was certain of it. If she loved Damien then she wouldn’t be in a relationship with Drake…and he did make her happy, he did. Damien just had the advantage of knowing her longer, making more sense of the chaos that filled her head regularly. This was a mess. Drinking would help her forget.
His hand came to rest on her hip and unlike the drunken guy before her, it felt right. It sent shivers up her spine and made her lean more into his body, the warmth radiating from him and giving her a sense of protection. His lips looked so inviting and she longed to lean in and kiss him, but she couldn’t. She couldn’t go down that road. Taylor blamed the state of her current mind. They were beyond this now, what they had, whatever the hell it was, had been almost a decade ago and feelings like that do not linger for almost a decade. At least, that was what Taylor kept telling herself as she tried to control her racing heart.
The music calmed her down, removed all thoughts from her mind as she danced to the beat. The Sounds were one of her favourites at the moment and they seemed to always be able to pick her up when she was feeling down, though they were the last band she thought she’d hear playing in this particular night club. It didn’t matter though and finally, she felt that release she needed; the freedom, the blithe lightness and the need to do nothing. It was a pleasant change, welcome in every way. She opened her smoky eyes and chuckled at Damien moving to the music. It was true, he wasn’t the worst dancer out on the floor tonight, but it was obviously a while since he’d been told to dance. She smiled, moving a little closer to him as the beat thickened and playfully she bumped into him, laughing as she did so, just for fun. When the song ended, Taylor decided she wanted more alcohol in her body before this evening continued. “I’m heading to the bar, want anything?”
She shouted over the music, her hand resting on Damien’s shoulder as she leaned into his ear. She was in the right mood now for fun to happen and she wanted the buzz to go with it now, before she danced the rest of the night away. Maybe the hangover would kill her come morning, but that was something she could think about and deal with when it came, not now. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! People always use the metaphor of “drowning in something” whenever they can’t escape it. Well, right now Damien was drowning in cherries, dark waves of silky hair and midnight blue mixed with supple skin. If he really had any control over the situation he would be out of there faster than the Roadrunner, but it seemed impossible to escape right now. He was enchanted, trapped by everything to do with Taylor. It was almost enough to bring John Keats back from the dead to write a poem about it. She was the unknowing femme fatale in this epic and yet she carried enough innocence to play the victim too. If this was Ancient Greece, there would be a tale told about her, though he was unsure if she’d be the heroine or the siren right about now. He was drawn to her, unable to push her away or leave her alone and not just because she was hurting or because he was in love with her. It was as though he wouldn’t be able to exist, to breathe without Taylor orbiting close enough for him to touch her. Damien had only ever loved her. Maybe it was corny, cheesy and stuff from Disney movies, but it was how she made him feel. Now that he was back in her daily life, he didn’t want to lose her again. For him, Taylor was the only woman he wanted to be with. Yes, he had been in short lived relationships since the night they confessed their love for each other, but none of them had ever been able to compare to Taylor, not by a long shot and it terrified him that one woman could have such a hold over him and not even realise it.
His eyes were fixed on her as she lost herself in the music. There may have been a lot of people swarming on the dance floor, each body moving to the rhythm of the song, but Damien was only looking at her. There was something raw about the way she moved and Taylor seemed weightless to him, like all those problems from earlier had been lifted, taken away by some force, leaving only the girl, without worries, concerns or issues to deal with. She was beautiful, but in this moment she was radiating. He wondered if other people saw her the way he did. He moved with the beat, smiling as Taylor moved closer to him. He wanted to reach out, place his hands on her hips and dance with her, but there hadn’t been enough drinking yet for him to get away with that and write it off as innocent. Plus, he wasn’t sure if he wanted that; a drunken dance. Taylor meant more to him that that and he wasn’t going to take advantage of her in a vulnerable or drunken state; it wasn’t something he would do and he definitely wouldn’t treat Taylor like that. Her hand on his shoulder stopped his dance and he listened as she shouted down his ear, practically. “No, I’m good!” He needed to stay sober if Taylor was going to drink heavily. Damien wanted to make sure that she got home safely, and he couldn’t promise that if he was drinking too. Drunk Damien had a habit of being rather reckless and that was the last thing he wanted to encourage Taylor to be tonight. She may be an independent woman now, but he had a sneaky suspicion that if he challenged her, she’d accept, simply to prove a point and god only knows what he’d challenge her to do if he was drunk enough.

If there was one thing Taylor succeeded in, it was playing the oblivious. She didn’t realise Damien’s unspoken emotions, or her own, for that matter. She liked to live in the simplicity of life, ignoring the complicated and rejecting the difficult. Was it so much to ask for things to be straightforward? Tonight, it was like the doors she kept locked had opened, revealing to her everything she had longed to pretend wasn’t there. Right now, it was Damien. There was so much she kept from them both and right now that annoying, Jiminy Cricket voice was in her head, questioning why Damien was the only man who she had willingly kept in her life, why he was the only man she had ever said “I love you too”. Logic demanded there be a reason and Taylor’s heart was screaming for her to give it one, but the undeniable fear that was rising inside was choking her. She didn’t believe she could be oblivious to such strong feelings for eight years, yet her heart seemed to be telling her otherwise right now. No, she was in a relationship with Drake and she did like him…she liked him a lot and he was safe for her. Damien…Damien could shatter her and she was terrified of letting that happen, but tonight she was unable to fight away that desire to know and feel more.
She leaned against the bar and pushed her hair back from her face, taking a moment to breathe. Their friendship meant more to her than she could ever verbalise, but her feelings were overwhelming her tonight and the desire to be in his arms was almost killing her. The bartender came over to her and she ordered two shots of tequila and a white rum and coke. Drinking to forget everything was still her mantra for this evening and she needed to do something to shut these feelings up, though she knew that with enough alcohol, she would become the open book she usually avoiding being. There was every chance that tonight would ruin what she had with Damien and as she shot back the tequila without blinking, she slowly relaxed, realising that this poison was truth serum and the right words, right touches and she would do something stupid or brilliant. Taylor polished off the drink and ordered another one for luck. She could feel the alcoholic buzz kicking in now and suddenly she wanted to act like she didn’t have to worry about things like this.
She turned around, sipping at her drink and noticed all the carefree people in the club. There were strangers dancing with strangers, couples showing far too much PDA for it to be healthy, but they were all just going with the flow. Alcohol and nightclubs seemed to be the place where problems were left at the door and where inhibitions vanished. Taylor wanted to be like that. She wanted to just go with her feelings for once in her life instead of being so damn level headed all the time. She didn’t want to overthink everything and analyse every little detail tonight. For eight short hours she wanted to be irresponsible and selfish. Was it so wrong of her to want to give into that?
Shaking her head, she finished the drink, placing the glass back on the bar before moving back to where she had left Damien. She grinned at him, dancing to the new beat that was playing, the alcohol hitting her bit by bit now. She wasn’t drunk, just at that stage of substance induced bliss where everything seemed like a good idea and where she wasn’t afraid to say or do something. In other words, she was slowly losing her self-control and she didn’t realise it. Someone bumped her from behind and she stumbled closer to Damien, laughing at the ‘dangers’ of dance floors, before picking up her pace again, moving her hips to the beat, but not moving away from the law professor, not even caring that when she moved a certain way her hip almost bumped his. The song changed and the sultry sound of Portisbox was not lost on Taylor who whilst she moved sensually to the beat, also looked across at Damien, her green eyes filled with the emotions she was realising and fighting against. Taylor gave into temptation, into desire and indulged the selfish side of her. It could be the biggest mistake she made, but the alcohol told her otherwise. Stepping closer, she placed one hand on Damien’s shoulder, smirking seductively as she closed the gap between their bodies, her fingers trailing down his chest. She bit her glossed lip as her eyes met his again, her heart racing as she leaned in, lips ghosting over his nervously.

As Taylor vanished through the crowds on the path to the bar, Damien took a moment to think about what was happening. Dancing with someone could be innocent enough, but his eyes couldn’t tear themselves away from her and the way she swayed and moved to the rhythm of each song that played. He knew what alcohol could lead to and he knew what Taylor could be like if there wasn’t someone to hold her back from it all. There was something different about the way she was acting tonight and he didn’t know if it was the reaction from whatever had happened with Drake, or something more. Something was shining in those emerald eyes of hers and he recognised the look of internal struggle that Taylor had failed to hide from him her whole life. In the past it had been something foolish, like whether or not to skip a class to go to the beach, but tonight the fire was burning intensely and it looked like the resolution of that may not dampen the flames.
He ran his hand through his hair and let out a shaky breath. It was taking every ounce of self-control that he had not to give into his feelings and desires when she was there, moving so sensually less than three feet away. If you had asked him twenty years ago if the girl next door would grow up to be the most beautiful woman in New York City, Damien probably would’ve laughed and said ‘no way’, but ask him today and there was no other girl or woman who could make his heart beat quite the way Taylor could. No one stood a chance against her and it’d hit him so hard that he had fallen for her that ignoring it seemed like the best way to deal with it eight years ago, but now time was racing by and he was thirty. He didn’t want to have her be the ‘one who got away’ or his biggest regret when he was laying on his deathbed in fifty or so years’ time. He wanted so badly to confess it all to her when he had made the move to New York, but Drake had happened and Taylor seemed so happy, but now that illusion was shattered, as was their relationship, from the looks of things. Still, it would be rocky to challenge the matter tonight or even in the near future. He knew Taylor, things had to ride out with her first before she could accept something new and she had to deal with it on her own, without people pushing her or guiding her in the right direction. She’d find it alone, eventually.
Sometimes he wished he could see what was going on in that pretty head of hers. She was a closed book a lot of the time, even with him in many ways. He wished that she’d just be open and go for something, rather than think about it over and over. She could be spontaneous and was always surprising, but on matters that really held meaning Taylor held back, taking the cautious root and sometimes scaring herself away. He didn’t want her to do that anymore, he wanted her to be able to embrace the true freedom that she had.
He saw the brunette waves over the crowd, thanking the stars for Taylor’s unmissable height in those shoes. Something seemed different about her upon her return and he paused for a moment to study the newfound look in those jade orbs. There was a very strong chance it was the alcohol she had consumed at the bar, but Damien could shake off the feeling that it was something else looming in her eyes; something that was stronger and lasted longer than the effects of the drink. He fell back in sync with her dancing again, jumping slightly when Taylor almost crashed into him. Drunkards and dance floors really didn’t mix, but Taylor had taken the bump in good form, laughing happily as she danced closer to him now. Damien swallowed hard. He could feel the warmth radiating from her and her hips brushed his innocently as she moved. The song changed suddenly and gone was the techno beat, the happy track that everyone was jumping about to. Now, it was something sultrier, mysterious and it seemed to weave its spell on Taylor with impressive ease. He glanced at her, his eyes almost freezing him in place. The heated emotion there could not go ignored and Damien felt his heart racing as he realised what she was feeling and it was more than just lust, he could see it. Before he could think anything more of it though, the irresistible brunette had closed the space between them and Taylor’s hand found its place on his shoulder, trailing seductively down his chest. Instinctively, he placed his hands on her hips, completely mesmerised by the woman before him and the way she was chewing on her lip as she looked at him. He barely had a moment to recognise what she was doing before her lips had touched his in a feathery kiss that took a second for him to realise was real. He gasped silently, his last strand of self-control snapping as he moved to hold her tighter, pulling her closer for a fierce kiss. Maybe she’d push him away and maybe this was a ruined friendship in the making, but he couldn’t do it anymore; he simply could resist Taylor.

She was convinced he was going to push her away, ask her what she was doing, tell her she had clearly drunk too much alcohol and it was going to her head. She expected a speech that involved the line ‘this is not what you want’ and a lecture that would tell her nothing more than she was lonely and acting up because of the problems in her life. She was already imagining him prising her hands away from his body and helping her get home, promising to speak to her tomorrow, when she was thinking more clearly. Taylor honestly thought that this was going to be the end of the night and potentially the end to her friendship with the thirty year old. What she didn’t expect, was the reality.
She felt his fingers tighten around her hips and she gasped as she stumbled closer to him from his forceful pull. The second his lips hit hers, she was gone. The logic and reasoning she had been arguing with all night simply vanished, along with everyone else dancing around them. Her lips moved against his, the sparks shooting throughout her body as her eyes fluttered closed. Her free hand moved up to circle his neck, holding him against her, kissing him harder, almost overwhelmed with emotions and the pounding of her heart. It wasn’t like they hadn’t kissed before, but this seemed different from the last one eight years ago. It was flooded with underlying secrets and feelings that had been ignored for far too long to ever be deemed healthy. Taylor balled his shirt in her hand, kissing him with fervour, not wanting to pull herself away from him as she moved to deepen the kiss.
Years ago, she had been unaware of her feelings when she had kissed Damien and the whirlwind events of that night had left her confused for some time afterwards, but tonight it seemed like she ought to be kicking herself; this had been so obvious all along and she had failed to realise exactly how much Damien meant to her. This felt right. His arms, his kiss…it all made the problems of the world fade away and Taylor could focus on nothing but them as her fingers brushed through the soft hairs on the back of his neck. Reluctantly, she pulled back from him slightly, the need for oxygen finally defeating her longing to keep kissing him. Her eyes opened, shining bright with emotions of varying sorts as she peered up at the man holding her in his arms. “Damien…”
She breathed quietly, her words washing over his lips, asking a question she wasn’t so sure about herself. She didn’t know what she wanted to say or do, but she knew she wanted Damien to stay like this with her. All thoughts of Drake were gone, the alcohol helping to subdue any possible moments where he may pop up and send Taylor reeling with a guilt trip she simply couldn’t afford to go through. She bit her lip, feeling like that eighteen year old again as she ran her fingers over Damien’s broad shoulders, wanting to memorise every contour of them. Flicking her eyes to meet his, she made a decision; one that could change everything. “Do you wanna get out of here?” She asked nervously, feeling like this was her first time all over again. There was something about Damien that made her feel that school girl giddiness that most people grow out of sooner rather than later. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! This wasn’t quite how he imagined this happening, but it felt so much better than he could have ever envisioned. The rest of the world faded away when he registered Taylor kissing him back and his hands moved to pull her as close as was humanly possible, encircling her waist, his fingers splaying across her lower back, holding her close to him and not giving her the room to move, though it seemed that Taylor planned on going nowhere. He shivered as her fingers moved across the back of his neck and she took the initiative to deepen the kiss Damien was quickly losing himself in.
He could feel the passion almost radiating from Taylor and he knew that there was more than just the alcohol at work here. She wasn’t all that drunk from the looks of things and whilst this bravado had been totally unexpected, it wasn’t unwelcome. His lips turned upwards at the corners as he kissed Taylor, trying to convey all the emotions he had been aching to tell her since he had arrived in New York. It was years of pent up affection unleashed in one small, but mighty gesture and he didn’t know how to process this. He still couldn’t believe it was happening and the electricity jumping between them had to be the most magnificent sensation he had ever experienced in his life.
Damien groaned in disappointment when he felt her lips leave his. Who needed to breathe when he could keep kissing her?! He smiled lovingly when he saw the look in her jade eyes, the emotions shining there clear for all the world to see. If he had any sense he would have stopped there, but the look in her eyes changed everything. It wasn’t drunken lust he saw, but another powerful emotion, raw and beautiful looking back at him. He forgot about the reality they were in; the breaking relationship with Drake, the vow he made at the start of the night to be the responsible one and the fact that Taylor never did things like this, even if her emotions screamed at her to do so. He was about to pull her back to his lips when he heard her breathe his name. It froze him in place, just the way in which her lips formed the words was enough to make him fall in love with her all over again. She seemed to be asking something, pleading with him, and he searched her eyes for the answer as his hands moved up and down her back in an affectionate manner. When she bit her lip like that, Damien nearly crumbled again. He wanted to sweep her back in his arms and kiss her until they were dizzy, but her words froze him in place once again. Smiling at how nervous and cute she looked, even when she was driving him crazy, he leaned back towards her to capture her lips in a short-lived but hungry kiss. He pulled away gently and pressed his forehead against hers, gazing into her eyes as his arms circled her slender body. “Let’s go.” He whispered to her, pulling away only to take her hand and lead her away from the crowd who seemed oblivious to their previous dance floor make out.
Outside, he hailed a cab similarly to how he had done earlier and helped Taylor into the bright car when it came to a halt. He gave his address to the cabbie as he took his seat, leaning across the seat to press his lips to Taylor’s again. Her lips were intoxicating and now he had tasted them he couldn’t seem to get enough of them.

There should have been warning bells screaming at Taylor right now. She should have been remembering Drake, not focusing on Damien and those intoxicating lips of his. She wasn’t the kind of girl who did this sort of thing and she rarely ever condoned such behaviour, but it was like she wasn’t in control of her logic anymore. All she could see was Damien, the night they had once shared and what that might turn into now. He had kissed her back and she had lost all self-control. Taylor didn’t understand half of the emotions she was experiencing, but she didn’t care so long as she was with Damien right now.
The butterflies were fluttering around her stomach in what could only be described as a cyclone of sorts. She couldn’t believe what was happening and she felt like she was a teenager all over again. For a moment, it was like they were both students again; young and carefree with a world of possibilities at their feet just waiting for them to tackle each one. However, the only thing she wanted to tackle now was Damien and her emotions were soaring high as she pressed her lips to his again as he led her from the nightclub, ignoring the rest of the world surrounding them as he helped her into the taxi. She was nervous and excited, but mostly she was the happiest she had felt in a long time. Damien had a way of pulling that out of her even when she didn’t think it was possible. She wasn’t drunk. She knew that, she knew that she was barely breaking tipsy anymore, but the tingles that were shooting through her veins were the work of the law professor whose hand was still on her skin, his warmth shooting up her arm and only encouraging the red blush that was spreading through her neck and cheeks.
An uncharacteristic giggle erupted from her lips as he moved closer to her in the cab. Now she did feel like a teenager as she kissed him briefly and pushed gently on his chest to move him away from her. She wasn’t going to make out in the back of a taxi like a couple of college kids would; Taylor was more private than that. Plus, she didn’t like the idea of the cab driver potentially watching them in the rear view mirror. “I’m not doing this in the back of a taxi.”
She laughed, biting her lip and looking at Damien with that spark in her eyes that only he was ever able to bring out. It wasn’t long before they were back at his apartment building, but the short ride was enough to increase the tension tenfold as the pair stumbled from the car and Taylor grabbed his wrist, sliding her fingers down to grasp his hand as she dragged him into the building and into the elevator where her lips hit his heatedly. Her fingers clumsily sought out the floor button before tangling in his soft hair again and when the floor finally came before them, she barely separated their lips ad she pushed him from the elevator and backed him up towards his door. “Keys, c’mon, now.” She breathed, pulling away from him only to look at him with awaiting eyes. Damien should have known better, he knew that despite the fact that he couldn’t and didn’t want to pull his lips away from Taylor’s. She was already having problems with her relationship with Drake and this was only going to complicate things and make it harder for her to fix things. He may not have liked the doctor who had upset Taylor, but he didn’t want to destroy what she had built with him before Damien had arrived in New York. His jealousy for what they had radiated from him so much at times that he was shocked Taylor hadn’t noticed it yet, but he wasn’t confident enough to just be honest with his best friend and confess his feelings to her outright. Maybe it was his pride stopping him from getting a wounded ego or maybe there was more at stake than he thought. More than anything else, he didn’t want to lose his friendship with Taylor. They had been through so much together that it would be heartbreaking to lose her now, forever.
He chuckled huskily when she pushed him away in the taxi. It was kind of nice to know that Taylor wasn’t the kind of girl who totally lost control of who she was and what she was doing. There was still a semblance of the private girl lingering within her even after a lot of alcohol was pumping around her system making her think and act foolishly. Damien brushed his lips gently against hers in silent agreement and then spent the rest of the journey tracing patterns on her denim clad legs, his fingers dancing just above the bend of her knee.
At his apartment building, he knew that things were about to get a lot more serious than some dancing and making out on the dance floor of a nightclub that he felt he was at least six years too old for. Feeling Taylor kissing him so aggressively in the elevator, he almost lost himself again. He didn’t care if the doors opened on another floor and revealed them to another tenant of the building. All he cared about was the beautiful brunette in his arms, clinging to him as though he was the oxygen she needed to live. Damien’s hand splayed across the small of her back as he kissed her, never wanting to let her go and almost whining when she pulled away, cheeks flushed and eyes dark. He felt the wood of his front door press against his shoulders and smirked as Taylor grew impatient.
He kissed her one more time before turning around after he had fished his keys out of his pocket and pushed them into the lock, hearing the click and the scurry of paws as his dog came to see who was returning home at this hour of the night. The loyal animal was pretty much ignored though as the ex-lawyer pulled Taylor through the door and crashed his lips against hers again, stumbling awkwardly towards the bedroom. He didn’t know the layout of his apartment all too well yet and bumped into a few supporting beams and tripped over a spare table he kept for visitors before he found the familiar doorway and plush carpet.
Inside, he was about to move things further when it was like someone turned the light on in his mind. What were they doing? Taylor was drunk and still in a relationship, even if it was fraying dangerously now. He pulled away from her lips and sighed, holding her at arms length and trying to shake the heated gaze from his eyes and mind. “Tay, we can’t do this. What about Drake?” He took a step away from her and swallowed hard, composing himself. “No, this can’t happen, not now. Look, you take the bed and I’ll crash on the couch and see you in the morning.” He kissed the top of her head gently as he walked by her again, this time closing the door on his way out, leaving her alone in his bedroom whilst he composed himself behind the door. If he had stayed there much longer he would’ve lost control and ignored his conscience. He knew that Taylor would’ve regretted what could have happened come morning and despite what he wanted most of all, he would always put her best interests before his own.

When Damien pulled away, a soft noise slipped her lips and she stumbled once she didn’t have the broad chest to lean against. Her olive eyes blinked once, twice and then looked at the lawyer who was being the sensible one out of the two of them right now. Technically, Taylor still was with Drake and she had never been the kind of girl to cheat before and she wasn’t going to start now. Plus, she had been drinking and she was in a reckless mood and…so many excuses were flooding her brain right now but none of them could form a verbal sentence on her tingling lips. Why not? Because the truth was that the only excuse that would be the truth was that she wanted to kiss Damien. She wanted to be in bed with him right now and Drake was the last thing on her mind during all of that. She knew, better than she wanted to, that she wasn’t here and she hadn’t done this to numb the pain Drake was causing her. No, this had happened because it was the only possible outcome for bottling up her feelings like she had done for so many years.
Nevertheless, she didn’t try and coax him back into the room. Tonight wasn’t right. Once the door was closed, Taylor took a deep breath and put her head in her hands. How could she have been so foolish? Kicking off her shoes and shimmying out of the skinny white jeans she snatched a t-shirt of Damien’s from one of the drawers. It wasn’t the first time she had spent the night and she knew he wouldn’t mind. Quickly she pulled the shirt on and folded her own clothes over the dresser, leaving them on the corner before staring at the large bed. She felt awful for shooing him to the couch in his own apartment, but she knew neither of them could trust themselves to be in the same room right now, let alone the same bed. Crawling under the duvet, her dark hair fanned out around her shoulders as she lay down, eyes fixed on the dark sky of the city as sleep came to consume her.
The next morning, she woke up in a panic. What was she going to do? Why had she let things get to where they did last night and what did it mean when Damien kissed her back?! She felt her chest tightening, the panic swelling within her. She didn’t want a relationship with her best friend! No, her feelings for him were platonic! Drake was her boyfriend, the man she was supposed to be falling for! She paced the room for as long as she could before her eyes fell on the time and she realised that if she was in her for much longer, Damien would come looking for her. She swallowed hard, took a deep breath and reached for the handle, twisting it slowly and the smell of bacon and coffee hit her hard, awakening her senses and bringing a low growl from her stomach. This was the time to test out her acting talents and try to do what she always did when things got like this; run.
