A small smile grew on his lips, but he was still totally confused by Meg and what she wanted from all of this.
With Jenny, things had ben simple, almost too simple. Any fights that they had shared were over before they really began and there was no hiccups that threatened to tear them apart. They had gone from their first kisses to their first child without almost any danger flagging up in the road they were on. It was the stuff people believed didn’t exist anymore and the fairytale that seemed to get lost as the twenty first century arrived. It had been too perfect and clearly someone, somewhere didn’t like that and had very quickly turned it all on its head. He knew he’d never find that ease with anyone else ever again and with Meg, there would definitely be more of a rocky road ahead of them, but she had the fighting spirit to make it through when he was ready to give up, and that was what Theo needed.
The Scottish widower still didn’t understand what Meg saw in him. Whenever he looked in the mirror all he saw were dark, tired eyes with growing bruises beneath them. His skin was closer to sickly pale than attractive and the unshaved stubble grew on his face not because he liked it, but because he didn’t have the time or the energy to keep his skin smooth-shaven. Why didn’t Meg see that she could do so much better than him? It was a little frustrating for him to understand when she was acting as though he was the greatest guy to walk the earth, even though he had and still was keeping so much from her. “You are blind, Miss Warren, ta the wonderful things out there that are so much better than me.”
His smile was a sad one and he moved to rub the back of his neck, the awkward crick from passing out on the sofa the night before returning. “Easier said than done, hen.” He whispered, kissing her cheek lightly. “But, I’ll try.” He said with the gentle promise in his words. He would do his best and he’d work hard to let her in, but it would take time and he wouldn’t get it right very often, at least not at first. He moved his hand to her cheek and smiled sweetly, still a little unsure about all of this. “It might be awhile, hen. I’m not used ta this, at all.” He admitted with a slightly nervous laugh before kissing her softly again, kind of relieved that there was no one else around whilst this drama was happening and slowly being resolved as Theo took the first big step ever since Jenny had died. Jenny was another topic he would eventually have to tell Meg about, but it was still too raw and too painful for this moment in time.
