He didn’t mind if this was how they had to play it out for a little while. It would be easier if he could sign too, but he had a horrible feeling that it might be a while before he could get back to that with her and continue to learn more. His arm was killing him now and that was before the extent of the damage was even looked at. He probably should try moving something slightly, but he was much too afraid of upsetting Payton or his mom even more if something didn’t move properly.
For those who knew Nix, the idea of him being with Payton was probably a little absurd, but then people had said that it made sense; they balanced out the relationship. If the white blonde boy had dated someone who was almost identical to himself then it would be nothing more than a hyperactive screaming match every five minutes and most other girls couldn’t handle the idea of a boyfriend who was just as likely to jump up and down on the bed as he was to run about the park and tackle someone to the ground in the nature of good fun. Still, they complimented each other and it wasn’t as though Phoenix gave a damn what anyone else thought about him or his life. His entire life he had been the outcast, the oddball; even his brothers weren’t as crazy as he was and none of the others would be thrilled with a bullet scar, at least not at first. Most men could probably appreciate the idea of battle scars and wearing them with pride.
He knew it would take both Pay and his family a bit of time for this to become easy, but he was optimistic about the whole thing. To be honest, his mother would just be overjoyed that finally there was someone to take care of her son and – try – to keep him on some sort of rein. He wished It could’ve been under easier and better circumstances where maybe Payton had more of a warning about what was about to unfold before her eyes. His family were definitely lively and when they were all at home it was hardly quiet around the dinner table; bickering, playful taunts and the voice of his mother trying to calm them all down while their father laughed and usually ended up getting blamed for their hyperactive and boisterous nature.
His eyebrows furrowed as Pay moved to face him, her hands signing out her confession. He chuckled softly and pulled her closer, his lips brushing his forehead. He wasn’t really the kind of PDA sort of guy, but he always kissed and hugs his friends so this was hardly anything to be worried about, even if Payton was in front of his mom and brother. “She’s pleased to meet you. And then I got told off for not mentioning you before.”
Derek moved forward and closer to Payton, leaning down and kissing her cheek in the same manner that Nix used to greet her. The brothers were more alike than any of them would ever acknowledge, but Nix grinned, hoping that a similar personality might help her and not just overwhelm her. “My brother is an ass, I’m sorry you’re stuck with him and his newfound scars.” Derek said with a boyish smirk, dodging before Phoenix could hit him with his only good arm. His mom had picked up the doctor’s file and was looking at it as though she understood what all of it meant. “Ma, put it down and sit down. You fuss too much.” Nix said with a roll of his eyes. She looked up at her son and shook her head. “With sons like you, I have to fuss.” She said before complying with his wishes and sitting on a free chair. Nix was exhausted already and this had only gone on for five minutes so far!
