Penny tried to remember she was probably the only one she knew who understood so many languages. It was easy to forget when she usually stuck to English, even at the hospital. The only time she switched out was when she was with a patient, swearing or teasing one of her friends. Other than that, she stuck to one language. It made her giggle though, when she slipped and whoever she was with stared at her confused or said something to remind her. She giggled now, knowing it confused Chase when she slipped up and he couldn’t understand a word that was coming out of his mouth. But then she usually went pale whenever he said something about blood. Penny wasn’t opposed to the red stuff obviously, but she wasn’t exactly a fan of it either. “She hasn’t found my brother yet,” she said laughing. Reilly hated reading and whenever he found his sister with her nose in one, he usually snatched it out of her hands and forced her outside for some silly game that ended up filling hours of their time with the neighbours.
The brunette linguist loved hearing the stories of Chase’s childhood and just talking to his mom. She was funny and so sweet; nothing like her own mother. It was nice to see what it was like to have a mom like that. She had her father, but he always felt like he had to make up for their mother so he went above and beyond caring for them, giving them everything they wanted, with next to no questions asked. Usually, if they’d done something good, the siblings got a gift for it, if they passed all their classes, gift. If they wanted something that was stupid and ridiculous to him, they had only to explain why they wanted it or needed it and if he understood or agreed after hearing them, they got it. Penny had only used that one a couple times and even then it was for things she really needed, like a new laptop and even then, she worked at the local café so she could usually buy what she wanted herself. Grinning, Penny rolled her eyes, brushing away Chase’s comments. It was all in good fun, hearing about everything and if one or more of them ended up brighter than a tomato, then so be it.
The conversation she was having with Mrs. McMahon quieted when the two girls walked into the backyard. It was obvious they were Chase’s sisters with the way he acted around them. He was the perfect, probably slightly annoying big brother. And when they were introduced, Penny smiled, waved and laughing said, “Hello, nice to finally meet you both. I’ve heard so much.” It felt like she had, with all the stories Chase had told her of his childhood, nearly all of them involved one or both sister, so it was like she knew them as well, even though they hadn’t met. She spent the next few minutes talking to them about their shopping trip and how she liked DC so far though since she hadn’t seen anything more than the scenery to get to the McMahon residence, she didn’t have a great answer but she was looking forward to seeing the city. She laughed getting their side of Chase and hearing the stories they told that he hadn’t. Penny looked up at Chase when he spoke, finding him looking back at her. A light blush coloured her cheeks, though she wasn’t sure why. Still, she grinned at him and shook her head. “Don’t look at me,” she said, looking over at one of his sisters innocently.

From what Chase could see, Penny was getting on great with his family so far, making plans with his mom and laughing with his sisters. At least he didn’t have to worry about her feeing awkward around them or sitting in silence while the rest of them joked about. He knew that his parents couldn’t be more welcoming if they tried; probably a trait they found during the adoption process they went through. If there was any chance to bring someone else into their home then they were usually jumping at the opportunity to say hello and get to know them better. He wouldn’t be surprised if by the end of their trip his mom was giving Penny her number and telling her to call whenever she felt like it. He was pretty certain that his mom was still trying to adopt other people into her life now that she had successfully raised three kids. The woman was far too sweet and compassionate for words at times. At least anything that got said here and told to Penny wouldn’t get too far back in New York. The brunette he had brought home might tease him endlessly about most of the things, but it wasn’t like Chase had too many friends or a reputation to uphold socially. The only reputation he cared about was his one as a doctor and that was looking nice and shiny so far, and he had every intention of working hard to keep it that way once his residency was over at the end of the year.
He raised his eyebrow and then looked over at Alicia who he caught quietly trying to quack like a duck. Narrowing his eyes and feeling mischievous, he set his lemonade glass down and crossed the small space to grab his fair haired sister and toss her unceremoniously over his shoulder, carrying her back inside the house and towards the pool with Jen foolishly chasing after him to “save” Alicia. Instead of tossing Alicia into the water though, he spun around, grabbed Jen and pushed her in first before dropping Alicia into the depths. They ought to have known better by now when he had done this to them time and time again, leaving them screeching and vowing to get revenge on their big brother. It was like they were all little kids again when Chase came home now, but he loved it and it reminded him of how many great memories they had all shared in this house. Returning to the garden, he ignored his mother’s questions and laughs and kept his eyes fixed on Penny. “Don’t think you’re getting away with this. You’re guilty by association.”
He tugged Penny to her feet and then swept her up in his arms, laughing as his mom burst into hysterical laughter, seemingly happy to have her son back home. Ignoring anything Penny had to say in her defence he took her back into the house but through a different door, leading back to one of the casual sitting rooms they had passed on their way outside. Putting her back on her feet he backed her into the wall and trapped her there with his arms either side of her body. “Now, Miss Kendall, give me one reason why I shouldn’t toss you into the fountain out front.” He whispered, leaning in close enough to catch the scent of her perfume. He didn’t quite know what he was doing, but he was rolling with it, keeping his eyes glued to hers as he waited for her answer. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Penny wasn’t sure what she would be expecting when she agreed to go on this trip with Chase but she was already enjoying herself. His mom was just incredible. It was great hearing about everything and laughing at all the stories Chase was too embarrassed to tell himself. His sisters were so sweet, too. It was nice being around people who actually cared. Her father and brother cared, but the other two just didn’t see the point. At one time, they thought Farrah was going to see the light of day, but their mother dug her claws in too deep and the youngest Kendall was lost.
Her own family dynamic had been different so it was nice to be around a family where every member truly cared for the rest. The family she had, that mattered was like that, but there would always be those two extras in the back of their minds. They all had stories and Penny couldn’t say which one she liked more; they were all so cute. She was giggling and so close to joining in on the quacking when Chase grabbed his sister and carried her inside. “Is it always like this?” she asked, turning to his mom, laughing. It wasn’t anything like this at her house. Usually if Reilly picked her up, it was to drag her to a game or she was sitting in his spot on the couch and she refused to move; even then she crawled back over before he had the chance to sit down. Penny shook her head, laughter still pouring from both women when Chase came back outside.
Penny watched as Chase got close. She wasn’t expecting him to pull her to her feet and she nearly tripped getting up off the chair. But a second later her feet left the ground anyway as Chase tossed her over his shoulder in a fireman’s carry and her sunglasses fell to the ground. “Chase,” she said, shocked through the laughter. “Put me down,” she added half-heartedly. She was too breathless laughing at everything. Without much effort, she hit her fist against Chase’s back though her actions didn’t do anything to deter him or slow him down. She had no idea where he was taking her but she’d find out soon enough.
Her laughter died out slowly when she was finally set to rights again, pinned to the wall. “If you wanted to kiss me, you didn’t have to carry me away like some he-man,” Penny whispered back, biting down lightly on her bottom lip. “And this is a new dress.” She had no idea what was really going on. Normally, Chase was so reserved and this guy wasn’t the Chase she knew. But she had to admit, she did like where this was going, so instead of pushing him away and playing a game of chase, she gripped the sides of his shirt, lightly pulling him closer.

“Only when Chase comes home!” Abigail laughed, shaking her head as she watched her son tease his sisters in the same way that he always did. He would do anything for those two girls and he had proven as much when he had risked his life to save theirs the night of the fire in the Hamptons. Even when he came back out and grabbed Penny, he was still running on that childish buzz that Alicia and Jen always managed to bring out in him. He ignored all of her protests, just like he had done theirs and kept going; for once acting on instinct rather than planning everything out with logic.
Chase rarely allowed himself to get caught up in a moment of any kind. He was usually much more reserved and kept himself in line with his own unspoken rules. Flirting and getting close to someone like this always had a habit of sneaking up on him though. He put everything else before romance that when it popped up in his life it usually caught him off guard and left him with far too many emotions than he knew what to do with. He hadn’t quite known what he was doing when he picked Penny up and carried her away and he knew even less by the time he was pinning her against the wall. Her whispered words only caused him to lose himself a little more in the moment. His dark eyes flicked to her soft lips and he realised that he really did want to kiss her right now, more than anything else. “It is a nice dress.”
He whispered, feeling her hands on his shirt. Chase was breathing slightly heavier now, his left hand dropping from the wall to Penny’s side as he leaned in a little closer, close enough to feel her breath on his skin as he closed his eyes, nervous in anticipation of what was about to come. What Chase didn’t count on was time working against him. The second before his lips grazed Penny’s a deep and only too familiar voice filled the room. “If I hear one more intern ask me about my stand on the new building plans for the hospital I’m going to send them to the filing room for the rest of the year.” Chase sighed, pulling away and turning around with a strained grin on his face, which was more than enough of a giveaway for his dad the second the light eyes fell on him. “Hey, dad. This is Penny.” The older man studied his son for a moment, already knowing that he’d ruined something when he walked into his home. “Well, it’s very nice to meet you Penny, I’m Will. Let me just go and put all of this in my office and I’ll introduce myself properly.” He turned to his son and nodded his head, feeling a little awkward. “Chase, it’s good to have you home again. Are your sisters about?” He was crossing the room in the direction of his office when Chase spoke up, running his fingers through his hair. “Yeah, I put them in the pool.” He said on a sigh, smirking when his dad turned to look at him with a bemused expression before leaving again. Chase dared to glance back at Penny and took a moment just to try and gather his thoughts. The moment had passed now and he wasn’t the kind of guy who was bold enough to lean in again now and kiss her, even if he really wanted to. His hands found their way into the pockets of his jeans and he smiled softly across at her. “It’s probably best if we unpack before dinner.” He said, wanting to know what she was thinking, but he wasn’t brave enough to ask. She’d gone on a shopping trip with Reilly before the trip because she’d found she had nothing in her closet when she started to pack. It stressed her quite a bit, packing for this trip; mostly because she didn’t know what to expect from his family, the weather and everything else. So she’d made plans with the waitress to grab lunch and pick up some new things for this vacation. Along with the dress, she’d picked up a new swim suit and a couple new pairs of shorts. It was funny to think that the roles between Penny and Chase were almost reversed. She was hardly the reserved one! She said things and did things before thinking them through and then laughed at what terrible mistakes they turned out to be! Chase thought everything through before doing anything. How they became friends was still a mystery, but Penny liked hanging out with the young doctor. When he let himself slip up, he was funny, charming and so sweet. Plus, he never lied to her, and that was something she respected.
Penny’s heart was beating faster; it felt like it may even race right out of her chest. Chase was so close, barely a breath away as her dark eyes flutters shut. She was waiting for the instant of contact when the new voice shot through the mist surrounding her, slamming her back to the present and where they were. This was no New York. Penny’s face paled until she was a step under ghost and her hands dropped from Chase’s side to cover her face. She was so embarrassed at being caught about to kiss this man’s son. It would have been different, she hoped, if she’d known Chase’s father, or at least met him before this moment. She tried to will the tomato red blush away from her face before dropping her hands to her sides and leaning slightly to see Dr. McMahon past Chase’s shoulder. “Hi,” she said, smiling nervously, her cheeks still tinged with pink.
Sometimes, Penny really hated timing. The moment was gone and the brunette didn’t know what to do with herself now. Her heart just dropped, her eyes had snapped open and she felt like she could die from the shock more than the embarrassment of the moment. It was a damn shame they couldn’t get that moment back, it had been promising. When Chase’s father left them alone again, the air left Penny’s lungs in a rush, disappointed at the interruption. She ran her hands over her hair, not wanting to mess of the conch braid she’d put it in that morning. Her eyes met Chase’s again, and she had to blink before Chase's words registered. “Um, yeah I suppose that would be best,” she finally said, pushing off from the wall. “Lead the way,” she said, clasping her hands behind her back absently biting her bottom lip. She knew if she reached out now, she wouldn’t care if the moment was over.
