Kai offered, remembering just how often the weekend came and he heard friends talk about their need to hit a bar or club and blow off some steam that way. It was never really his scene, but he didn’t fault those who used the loud music and crowded venues as an outlet. “That would be an understatement. If she could get away with it, she would live off chocolate.” Astrid’s healthy front came as a necessity for her daughter, but Kai knew that the moment TK was in bed, the chocolate came out and the unhealthy snacks began. It amused him, but at the same time he couldn’t wait for TK to be old enough to figure out her mom’s scheming ways about hiding sweet treats. “If it’s too much I can order you something else?” He offered, although he didn’t have the deepest knowledge on alcohol and how things tasted behind that bar.The water had been a part of his life long before the US Navy claimed him. Kai had been on the high school swim team and still held two of the distance records at his old alumni, along with another one from his recruit training days. Even now he started each day with a trip to the pool and tried to end many with one too. He loved getting out to the ocean too, reminding himself of the life he had given up but how much he still loved to swim. It might have sounded crazy to someone who just met Kai or who saw him each day when he pushed himself to do more laps, but swimming had really been the staple that had held his life together. It had pulled him into the Navy, helped him choose his unit and now it was a way of clearing his head and remaining focused when work and life just seemed to pile up on his shoulders.
His sister had been the one academically gifted. Astrid could sit through the exams and write until her hand cramped and she didn’t mind the university years of studies and extra work. Kai had been quite different. He maintained a steady average throughout school, but he had known that he wasn’t going to be running off to some Ivy League school. He had no desire to pursue knowledge further than he had to, but rather enjoyed his more physically challenging career. Athletics often came with an expiry date, but the US Navy had offered him promising alternatives and an impressive future had he stayed on and now Kai had the NYPD offering him similar prospects once he had earned them. He was happy enough being an SVS detective, even with the long hours and the extra shifts he was called into work. Nothing made him feel better than protecting people and his job ensured that he did just that, and Kai usually pushed himself harder than he had to, ensuring that someone would sleep soundly tonight.
Chuckling, Kai could only nod his head in understanding. He preferred his busy weeks to the quiet ones and there was never enough stress that he was tempted by drink or any other vices. A trip to the gym answered any of Kai’s problems and he could handle the pressure a lot better than some people. Even when he felt the weight of the world on his shoulders, he still didn’t let it show and no one really could see it in his stoic features either. “I’m sure you have that in common with most of the people here tonight.”
