He tucked her in, left the jaw slightly ajar, just so that a very thin trickle of light from the hall streamed into the dark room. He figured that if she woke up, didn’t remember where she was, then the bit of light might do her some good, just to let her know that she wasn’t being help captive or kidnapped by the bastard who had tried to touch her earlier. Now left to his own devises, Romeo moved silently around his apartment, getting himself a glass of water before moving to the bathroom to finish his nightly routine, splashing his face with water and examining his lip. The swelling had gone down now, but the split was definitely still visible and no doubt would be questioned during his next shift at work by Simon or one of his managers. That’s if no one from the building had already reported the fight and identified Romeo as the unmasked crusader who had gotten involved.
He needed a cigarette. Ignoring the toothbrush already lathered with toothpaste, Romeo moved to the fire escape, turning the DVD player off in the process and leaving the sounds of the late night infomercials to quietly block out the silence. The silence was usually what drove Romeo to thinking too much and he didn’t want to do that now, not after tonight. He lit up his cigarette and then took a nice long drag, letting the smoke exit his lips in soft whisps, floating towards the dark night sky, the sounds of the traffic far below catching Romeo’s attention. He imagined Zoe lecturing him for smoking again tonight and smiled to himself. He liked how she actually cared for his health. Most people either found it disgusting or cool, but a rare few actually commented on how it would impact his health. It felt nice to have someone who cared, who wasn’t Ellie or his mam.
Once the stub was extinguished, Romeo stepped back inside, his arm bearing goosebumps from the harsh chill of the night air, before he moved back to the sofa, grabbing the spare sheet from the top of the towel cupboard and arranging the cushions to make a pillow. He settled himself down for the night, setting the alarm on his phone to make sure he was awake for Ellie and the general morning chaos that came in the Jervis apartment. He stared blankly at the TV screen, not paying attention to whatever overpriced rubbish the woman with the fake…everything was trying to sell. The lull of sleep was starting to wash over him and he was on the brink of slumber when a noise stirred him awake. He listened intently, trying to figure out what it was, because it definitely wasn’t the pipes. Then, it made sense. Someone was calling his name.
He threw the sheet from his body and moved swiftly to his bedroom, pushing open the door and punching the light switch with his good hand, banishing the darkness and the shadows from his room before stepping to the bed, sitting on the edge as he reached out towards a thrashing Zoe. “Zoe! Love, I’m ‘ere, c’mon, wake up, love.”
He cradled her close to his chest as he gently shook her, trying to stir her awake. “It’s okay, Zoe, I’m ‘ere, I’m with y’.” He moved the hair from her face and gently pressed a kiss to her clammy skin. Zoe hated, hated feeling helpless. It was her worst nightmare, and the one that had only been intensified tonight. She couldn't cope with being pushed around by anyone or anything. But, usually, she was her own hero; she didn't scream out asking for help from someone else. That wasn't like her. Then why had she called Romeo's name? She wasn't supposed to need his protection, or anyone's for that matter. She was supposed to be able to save herself, even from the darkest nightmares her overactive mind could muster up. And, yet, tonight, nearly even minute had proven her dead wrong.
Her breathing was shaky and uneven as the scenes from the nightmare flashed around her, spinning faster and faster. Zoe felt dizzy, overwhelmed, but, most of all, pain. Physically, her hand was burning once more from her moving so much. Mentally... well, mentally, she had no idea how she'd make this all go away once and for all. There had to be some way though. The feeling of hands on her had her flinching at first, her breath catching in a frightened gasp. Zoe's eyes blinked open as Romeo pulled her to his chest, and her entire body untensed the moment she realized it was him. He was here; he hadn't left her. It wasn't real. It wasn't real. But it was.
Zoe clung as tight as she could to his chest. She wasn't alone; Romeo was right here. He'd keep her safe, he'd promised. The trembles shook her shoulders still as she tried to escape the images still fighting their way into her mind. Why wouldn't they go away? She had her Superman here now, they were supposed to leave. He'd made the real one disappear, so why wouldn't these ones? Her face twisted in slight frustration as she buried herself deeper into his arms. Nothing would hurt her, not while she was here.
"Don't let him hurt me," she whispered, muffling it in his chest as a soft sob broke through her. Zoe was so scared that man would come back when Romeo wasn't there... and then who'd save her?

The scene was one he was used to far too much. It was also one that never got easier to deal with. Romeo hated seeing people suffering nightmares and it almost broke his heart to see someone who he really cared about thrashing and whimpering in their sleep. Ellie had suffered them a lot when she was younger, back when his parents were still together and when they all lived under the same roof. Even when Romeo had moved out to go to university, Ellie would phone him in the middle of the night when a nightmare had reduced her to tears and nerves.
Seeing Zoe in such a state was almost enough to send Romeo on a man hunt to beat the guy who had mugged her to a pulp. Suddenly, the punches he had thrown didn’t seem to be enough and he wished that he’d done so much more to that guy. He had gotten away easily compared to what must’ve been running through Zoe’s mind all night and what would probably continue to linger there until God only knows when. Romeo wanted to help her, he wanted to fix things until everything was alright again and she wasn’t so afraid of the big city anymore. He wanted to really be her Superman this time.
As she woke up, Romeo hugged her tighter to his chest, relieved that she was awake. There had been times with Ellie when she’d thrashed and writhed about in distress, oblivious to Romeo trying to wake her up for ages before he finally succeeded. Holding Zoe close, he brushed the hair from her face and dropped a kiss to her forehead again, sighing softly against her hair, letting his fingers linger on her face, brushing against her cheek as he slowly rocked back and forth, trying to soothe her as best as he could. “Oh, love…”
He breathed, crumbling at her words. “I’m never goin’ t’ let anyone ‘urt y‘, ever. I promise y’ that, love.” He whispered affectionately, kissing her head again and hugging her as close as was physically possible. He rocked her for a few moments, wishing that he could take all the pain away. Then, he remembered the water and the pills he had left on the side for her. Maybe they would help a little. “’Ere, I brought the painkillers and some water in for y’ earlier.” He reached out for them and offered them to her. The water would probably be what she needed most right now, but at least it was there and it was cool enough to maybe calm her a little more. “C’mon, I’ll stay with y’ for a li’l bit.” He stood up, still keeping one hand on Zoe’s shoulder as he stretched out, brushing the light switch to the ‘off’ position before climbing back onto the bed and rearranging the sheets so that she could lay back down again and so there was a little bit of room for him, so that he could cuddle her some more, until she fell back asleep. Zoe was never on this end of the nightmares. Sure, she'd had her fair share of them, but they'd never been this severe, ever. They'd been easy enough to handle and always seemed so trivial compared to the few her sisters or brother had had. This time it was so different. If this had happened at her apartment while she was all alone... gosh, it would've been ten times worse. No Romeo would be there to wake her up and cuddle her closer to the safety of his arms. Suddenly, she was very glad she'd agreed to staying over with him for the evening.
Her muscles gradually relaxed as Romeo rocked her back and forth, his fingers gently skimming her face. She stayed close to him, not wanting to let go for the life of her. He was the only one who'd broken through her stubborn haze enough to convince her she did need someone to save her, and she didn't plan on letting that go now. Zoe nodded weakly at his reassurring words, hiding her face in his chest after his lips pressed to her head. Even though he'd now seen her at her very worst, she still didn't like showing the weakness that was obvious in her right now. Not even Ember got to see her like this, and the blonde duo were quite close to each other. She felt like she still needed to hide, even from her Superman.
She clung to him as he continued to rock her soothingly, forcing herself into clearing her mind. None of these thoughts were needed right now; she had to be happy, let Romeo go sleep for awhile, too. He'd done his fair share this evening and deserved a break. Zoe blinked as he offered the pills and water to her, staring blankly at them for a moment before she remembered her hand was in fact still pulsing with pain. "Thank you," she murmured, her voice cracking a bit. Inside, Zoe was still battling to regain control of herself, though she'd visibly calmed down on the outside. She quickly stuck the pills in her mouth, downing the water in one gulp and going back to cuddling into him.
"I don't want you to go at all," she pleaded, grabbing his hand tight as he stood up. Zoe didn't want him to leave now, not when the nightmares might come back full-swing again. At least if he was here, there was less of a chance of them disturbing her once again. At least for tonight. "Tell me about yer wall," Zoe whispered as Romeo climbed in next to her. Hesitantly at first, she snuggled up to him, closing her eyes and trying to focus solely on the sound of his heart beat echoing hers.

He didn’t want to leave her, not when she was like this and not when the nightmares could come back again. If Romeo hadn’t put off sleep so that he could have one more smoke out on the fire escape, then he would’ve been in a deep slumber too and may not have heard her nightmare haunting her. The idea was one he didn’t like and he was relieved that he had been awake when she had suffered the horrible terror that had ruined the peaceful sleep she so desperately needed after tonight and everything that had cone with it. Needless to say, he was more than happy to comply when she almost begged him to stay with her. Although, he did wish that there were better circumstances that had them snuggling in bed together, rather than a horrid nightmare. Smiling softly, he brushed the hair from her face again, tilting her chin so that he could meet her eyes, so that she could see the care and sincerity twinkling in them. “I ain’t goin’ anywhere, love.”
He promised, forgetting about the TV still muttering away to an empty room. He crawled into his bed, moving Zoe slightly to the other side, just so they could both be comfortable on the modest double bed. The blind wasn’t pulled fully down, so a soft beam from the building’s floodlight made patterns on the hardwood floor, but stayed far enough away from the bed that the shadows wouldn’t mess with Zoe’s mind as he tried to relax her even more and lull her back into what he hoped would be an undisturbed and peaceful slumber. Once he was happy that they were both contently resting beneath the warm duvet, he pulled Zoe as close as comfortably possible. He didn’t want to scare her, but he figured she could do with his warmth and innocent touch right now, even though it was rare today for a guy and girl to share a bed without everyone jumping to one, no so innocent, conclusion. “The wall, huh?” He smiled, though he wasn’t sure if she could see it in the darkened room. Romeo, however, could make out every detail on the mural wall that stared back at him whilst he slept, almost protecting him from his own personal nightmares. “Well, back ‘ome in Liverpool, those two buildin’s sit on the old docks. The rest of the city, over the water, is still basically ruins from World War Two ‘cause they never ‘ad the funds to rebuild every li’l bit, but the view is freakin’ beautiful. Now, atop those two buildin’s stand two massive birds. Apparently, they’re cormorants, but the whole city knows ‘em as the Liver Birds. One looks out t’ the ocean and she’s the female; she watches for the sailors return and keeps ’em safe at sea, plus she makes sure that no ‘arm comes from overseas t’ the city. The other one, ‘ee’s the fella and ‘ee watches over Liverpool ‘erself to make sure that no ‘arm comes to the families livin‘ there. That, and ‘ee makes sure there’s always a pub open! So, they guard the city, together, but they forever ‘ave to face away from each other and be chained t’ their spots, ‘cause if they were ever t’ see each other, they’d fly away and mate and then Liverpool ‘erself would cease to exist, the river would burst ‘er banks and everythin’ we knew about the city would fall into the ocean. So, they eternally ‘ave to sacrifice their own desires to protect everythin’ they ‘old dear and the people they care about the most.” He told her, his voice soft as he remember the old tale and the days when he would go down to the docks just to look at them, or the water, or the ruined side of the city where there was still so much work to be done. He missed home and New York had nothing on Liverpool, not to him. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Romeo's little country mouse WORDS!733 OUTFIT! sexy PJ’s! LYRICS! A decent amount of the panic left Zoe's eyes as Romeo said he'd stay. It made her feel safer knowing he'd be right here, holding her close and making sure nothing touched her tonight. Plus, she would admit, it was nice to be cuddled into his warm embrace as exhaustion pulled on her once again. Sleep was very far out of her mind, though the ache of her tired body was slowly bringing it closer and closer. She needed the rest, but definitely not the nightmares that might accompany it. "Ya sure ya don't mind?" she asked timidly, regaining that bit of herself that was concerned about everyone other than herself. If he didn't want to watch over her for the remainder of the night, she'd cope somehow. Maybe she wouldn't sleep at all, but she'd make it if he wanted to catch some rest on the sofa.
Zoe moved over so he could climb into the bed with her, pulling the comforter up around herself a bit more as the cold air rushed against her skin. Now that she wasn't so concerned with her personal nightmares, she was beginning to notice just how cold, pained, and exhausted she actually was. Shivering, she snuggled into his arms as much as she could. Zoe wasn't worried about him trying something; she trusted him enough. With anybody else, this definitely wouldn't be happening. But, her Superman got many things from the country mouse that most people didn't.
Her lips tugged into a tiny smile as his did, her dark eyes following his gaze to the wall. She could make out the general shape of the design, and his explanation only helped to better paint the picture in her mind. Zoe smiled more as he spoke, letting his voice lull her back into a more peaceful and relaxed state. This would probably be one of her favorite memories with him, even if the reason behind it was one of her least. When he was quiet and gentle like this, she fell even harder for him, though his loud, brash manner never bothered her. The mouse simply preferred softer things. "That story's even better than Romeo and Juliet's," she replied as quietly as she could, the smile on her lips still. Truthfully, that was Zoe's favorite bedtime story ever.
As his little tale came to an end, Zoe could feel her eyes drifting closed. They were still intently set on the wall, trying harder to make out the image there and match it with Romeo's story behind it. Her body began to fully unwind as it claimed the rest it so craved, the painkillers beginning to kick in, as well. Zoe still clung tight to him, however, keeping him close to ward off any dreams that might marr this night once again.

He couldn’t believe she had to ask. Romeo was willing to do anything for his young country mouse, even if it meant him running to the other end of the earth to find some rare and valuable treasure or star that would only make her happy once it was in her hands. He knew she’d never demand something like that from him or anyone else, but he would still do it if he thought it would make her happy. “O’ course I don’t mind. There’s no where else I ‘ave t’ be, or want t’ be for that mat’er.”
He told her honestly, sliding a little further down the bed so that his head was resting more on the pillow than on the headboard. “I just want y’ t’ be alright, love.” He said in a quiet whisper, kissing her temple and then taking her uninjured hand in his own, running his thumb over her soft skin tenderly. Tucking her in again, more lovingly this time, Romeo kissed her cheek softly. “Try an’ get some sleep, love. I promise, nothin’s goin’ t’ ‘urt y’ an’ I’ll be right ‘ere when y’ wake up.” He whispered gently. She needed to get some rest and hopefully no more nightmares would plague her. He’d even stay awake to make sure of it. Not sleeping for her would only make matters much worse when the morning came and she felt like crap. No, she needed some rest and the painkillers should help ease the pain and allow her to rest more peacefully. He wrapped his arms around her as best as he could and held her close to his chest as he began to run his fingers through her hair. The gesture had seemed to help relax her earlier, so maybe it would work again now and she’d be asleep again in no time. He chuckled softly at her reaction to the story, his fingers still playing with those soft curls, stroking them and wrapping them around his hand before dropping them gently back on the pillow she rested upon. “Liverpool can be quite a superstitious place most o’ the time, even though most o‘ the myths ‘ave died out now, but when it comes to ‘em Liver Birds…no one dares question removin’ them.” He said softly, his mind suddenly remembering one of the many songs his mam had sang to him when he was just a boy, fighting his naps. Absentmindedly, and in a much softer, in-tune voice than when he was singing to her locked door earlier, the lyrics fell from his lips in a gentle song. “It’s just the same old song, nothing cruel, nothing wrong. They’re just two fools, who know the rules, but break ‘em all and grasp at ‘alf a chance to play their part, in a light romance.” He closed his eyes, reliving one of the few fond memories. “Livin’ on the never never, constant as the changin’ weather. Never sure, who’s at the door, or the price you’re gonna ‘ave to pay…” The lyrics trailed off, but he continued to quietly hum the rest of the tune to himself. Zoe still wasn't used to having someone at her beckon call. The idea that Romeo would do whatever she asked, willingly, was still sinking in, and probably would be for as long as she lived. People didn't do that for her; she did it for them. "Ya might be waitin' a long time for that, darlin'," she answered softly, closing her eyes as his lips pressed to her cold skin. Zoe wound their fingers together, resting her head on the pillow they were now sharing. She liked this arrangement, though. It was the safest and most comfortable she'd felt all night, cuddled up under the same blankets as him, hands linked and his lips pressing to her skin every now and again. Another small taste of perfection.
"My Superman'll keep me safe, right?" Zoe teased weakly as he tucked her in. She really felt like a little kid, but she wouldn't be complaining. The warmth was comfortable, and he was one of the best pillows she'd had in her life. After he settled next to her, she gently pressed her own lips to his jaw in thanks for... well, everything. For saving her from reality and dreams, for tucking her in, for buying her food, for... everything. Zoe nestled closer to him as his fingers wound through her hair once more. She loved when he did that and, now, it helped her calm herself down more. She smiled gently up at him, running her soft fingers down his cheek as his hands played with her hair still. The curls would for sure be a mess in the morning, but it'd be worth it. Definitely worth it. "Will ya tell me more sometime? Maybe when we're both not half asleep," she asked, yawning as she felt her eyes drooping once again. Man, she needed to sleep.
His singing only helped to drift her farther into the much needed sleep, a peaceful one this time. Zoe cuddled closer to him one last time, her cheek pressed close to him as her breathing finally evened out into deep, steady breaths. Her face relaxed into a look of painless, sweet innocence and she recieved the rest she'd been craving all evening. And, now, only dreams of Romeo flittered through her mind as the hours ticked by to morning.

Smiling softly, he chuckled against her hair, surprisingly enjoying the position they were in. Not that he didn’t enjoy cuddling with Zoe, but this was a bed and she seemed so at ease with it that it was a little surprising to him that they were this close together under the duvet. “Then I guess you’re goin’ t’ be stuck with us for a long time.”
He whispered softly, not even sure if she’d hear his words, they were almost silent. He didn’t want to go anywhere though and he’d stay with her for as long as she could put up with him, which was a terrifying thought, even for him, considering they hadn’t even arranged the details of their first date yet. “I’ll always keep y’ safe, love. Part of me role.” He mumbled sleepily as he fought to stay awake. His bed was a lot comfier than he ever gave it credit for and it was working against him right now. He cleared his throat softly and then glanced down at her, making sure she was safe and comfortable in his arms before relaxing once more, dangerously close to sleeping. Her words stirred him awake though and he chuckled warmly. “It’s definitely a date, love. Just tell us when y’ want t’ ‘ear more and I’ll tell y’.” He promised, tiredly playing with her hair still as she drifted off to sleep. He was supposed to be staying awake, making sure Zoe didn’t suffer from anymore nightmares and that she got the rest she needed. Romeo would be fine, he’d done this plenty of times before with Ellie when they were younger and he’d been able to function through a full day of school afterwards too. Sleep kept threatening to claim him and he’d furiously blink his eyes as though that would keep him awake. He couldn’t move too much without disturbing Zoe and that was the last thing he wanted to do, especially now that she was finally sleeping, free of nightmares for now it would seem. Romeo just hoped it stayed that way, and that was the last coherent thought he had before sleep finally did claim him as it’s victim. It looked like storytelling and lullabies had done their work on him too and not just the cute country mouse who was curled up against his side. The sunlight filtered through the small window, but Romeo didn’t stir. Instead, socked feet padded towards the room, familiar green eyes peering through the open door and grinning at the image they saw. It was as cute as they came and definitely worthy of a photo on the smart camera phone the sixteen year old had been graced with for her birthday. Quickly, she shot a photo of the couple cuddled in the large bed, Zoe enveloped in Romeo’s protective arms. Then, the shrill beginning of Romeo’s alarm reminded her of why she was there in the first place, and quietly she crept into the room, standing over her slack jawed brother and shaking her head at his dishevelled appearance before bending to shake him awake. “Oi, Rome, your alarm’s been goin’ off for the last ten minutes, y’ git.” She said quietly, groaning and rolling her eyes when he grumbled something and rolled over, pulling Zoe closer to his chest. Zoe was too tired to care that she in a bed. With a boy. Alone. In a dark room. Okay, she was concerned, but she just didn't have the energy to put that into words. Besides, she wanted Romeo there. If he stayed, he kept her nightmares and any other monsters at bay for awhile. If he stayed, she was safe. "Ya always say that in a bad way," she answered, giving him a half hearted laugh. Zoe wouldn't mind him being around. Heck, she needed him around. Someone had to keep the little country mouse from gathering too much city grime.
"I ain't always playin' damsel, though," she yawned back with a smirk as he began to obviously feel the tug of sleep himself. They were both more worn out than they'd admit, it seemed. "Soon. Definitely soon," Zoe mumbleld, fighting to keep her eyes open as she spoke to him. Their conversation was quickly dying, though, as they were both near sleep. It'd be a miracle if she remembered half of this, between the groggy mess she was and the pain killers she'd taken.
Zoe fell into the best sleep she'd had in forever. No nightmares plauged her now as she kept herself cuddled into the warmth Romeo presented. She really didn't want to wake up right now, and her body seemed more than happy to comply. Even as the sunlight began to tickle her eyes, she stayed locked in dream land, peaceful and in bliss. Her eyes instantly snapped back into alertness as she heard a new voice in the bedroom and felt herself being tugged closer to Romeo's embrace. Zoe blinked at Ellie in fright for a split second before it quickly melted into confusion. And, then, embarrassment as she realized just how the young lady had found the couple. "Romeo," she hissed in as polite a way as possible. There was really no chance of her moving until he let her, and, now, her burning cheeks were the dead give away for how she felt right now. This definitely wasn't how she wanted Ellie to see her in the morning.

Smiling softly against her hair, his eyes drifted closed again. “Oh, it’s definitely not a bad thing.”
He whispered in another almost silent voice as he cuddled closer to her again, the exhaustion making him a little clingy, if not just enjoying the moment with Zoe. Softly, he chuckled a tired chuckle. “Never implied that y’ would be, love.” God, this pillow was comfortable and the sheets had never felt softer before now. Then again, Romeo hadn’t been this drained in the longest of times and with Ellie needing him up before school hours, even on his days off from Borders, he usually kept a fairly regular sleeping schedule that had indeed been broken tonight, not that he really minded or thought about that when Zoe was curled up against his chest, her hand in his. Sleep was welcomed. In fact, he slept so well, there was no recollection of dreams, or that funny half awake state that came over a person when they needed to turn over in the night, thanks to a crick in their neck or a poorly placed bed spring. No, Romeo slept as though he was in a coma, rarely stirring, holding Zoe, and even the sunlight couldn’t stir him awake, no matter how much of the winter sun poured into the room and fell upon the bed. His jaw was slack, a lovely handsome dribble of drool hanging from the same split lip that bore the reminders of the previous day. His hair sat at odd angles, a screaming mess of overgrown bronze locks and the sound of Ellie’s voice only made him want to fall deeper into the spell sleep had cast upon him. At the sound of a softer accent, a more sweeter voice, his eyelids fluttered open slightly before closing again as the light hit them. “Wherefore art thou? Yeah, I get it, I get it.” He mumbled groggily, smacking his lips together as he tried to clear his awfully dry throat. He opened his eyes again, the jade falling on Zoe first. “Mornin’ love, sleep well?” He freed her from his hold to stretch his limbs out, wincing at the cracking of his shoulders and knees. Signs of a good sleep in his opinion. Then, he turned and glowered at his perky sister, far too awake and grinning for this time of the day. “You wake us up and don’t bring us a coffee? Y’ geg. Go, get ready for school then.” He sat up against the headboard and wiped the sleep from his eyes, his brain not coherent enough right now to realise how conspicuous it must’ve looked to Ellie to find Zoe folded in his arms like that. Although, right now, Romeo saw nothing wrong with it and it just seemed…right? [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Romeo's little country mouse WORDS!503 OUTFIT! sexy PJ’s!
