He said, looking away from her to judge their location and how far they had to walk. Theo had a habit of getting so wrapped up in his own thoughts that he got himself lost in this maze of a city and whilst walking was one of the most relaxing things to do, in his own opinion, it wasn’t on the agenda for this afternoon. He had deliberately ignored her compliment, mainly because he was trying to stay in her company today, instead of running off like he was actually a superhero. Replying to it might open unwelcome doors and however curious she might be, Theo was determined to keep some things to himself.
Theo was never really the kind of guy who really believed in love at first sight or any nonsense like that. Whilst he was a romantic, he didn’t find himself swooning over any girl who gave him the time of day. Even when he was younger it had taken him a ridiculous amount of time to realise that he liked Jenny so much. Everyone else around him had noticed it and Theo had remained oblivious, caught up in everything else instead. Now, it was sort of the same. He was intrigued by Meg and wanted to know so much more about her, but he had taken his sweet time to realise that maybe this was what everyone meant by ‘moving on’.
So many people saw him as a pessimist these days, but it wasn’t the case. He was stuck in reality, facing everything that he never dreamed would happen. He didn’t think he’d be widowed and playing dad at twenty six or that he’d still be attending university, yet it happened and with that came the loss of dreaming constantly about the impossible. He wasn’t depressed either, not medically anyway. There was a difference between what he was and what they saw, but most of them were younger and less harmed by tragedy and heartbreak than he was. Theo wouldn’t wish his experience on anyone though, no matter what they said or did in life.
He glanced down at her and raised an eyebrow in bemusement. Meg certainly was an odd one and definitely not what he was used to having in his life. Lilia was happy-go-lucky, but with Meg it was something more, almost like she was made of pure sunshine at times. He had yet to see her without a smile on her face or have a serious moment. “Most people would just try ta play a game of twenty question, hen.”
He chuckled softly at what she said before shaking his head. She was far too cheery for her own good at times and whilst it did slightly rub off on Theo during their encounters, he was a little disappointed that she might want to find out his life story. He didn’t open up to people well and he didn’t want this risk to turn out to be a mistake and he also didn’t want to push Meg away, though he was scared that he might. It wasn’t easy for him, but to tell her that would only introduce her to more questions; the kind he didn’t want to answer. “Well, you can relax. We’ll be there in a tick.” He told her, trying to keep the topic on their destination, rather than anything more personal. He was growing nervous again and that fight or flight feeling was telling him to run now. They just had one more corner to turn and another street to cross and then they would be there.
