Wow, it had been a morning and a half for the freshman who was relieved when her classes stopped for a few hours around lunch time. She had spent the morning listening to doctor after doctor drone on about things she had a basic understanding of already. It seemed to take forever, as it always does when you’re a little ahead of the rest of the class, so she had chosen to read some new material in one of the books she had borrowed from the library. It had been quite heavy stuff for so early in the morning and Adora’s head was starting to spin from all the terms and definitions she had been scribbling down in her notebook as fast as her pen would allow her too. She liked being prepared, even if the material wouldn’t be touched upon for a week or a month. It gave her more of a chance to focus on anything she was struggling with or spend more time researching topics for her papers. She hated feeling stressed and did everything she could to avoid it, even if that meant reading journals on a Friday night whilst the rest of the dorms were out partying with their fake ID’s and short skirts. That was a scene Adora didn’t belong in, nor did she ever want to. She was much too happy with her books and her hot cocoa.
Adora made her way towards the dining hall, her stomach grumbling and agreeing with her choice as she sidestepped a group of tall guys to squeeze through the doors, the smell of food enticing her stomach to grumble even more as she joined the queue of students with plastic trays in their hands. Her blue eyes surveyed the room. Usually, today, she shared her free time with Cole and she kind of hoped that he was already sitting at a table. Adora hated texting him to see what he was up to, it made her sound needy or clingy in her opinion when it really wasn’t the case. Cole just happened to be one of the few students at the university who really understood Addy’s studious ways and so, she liked to spend time with him, knowing that she wouldn’t say something that would make him call her a ‘geek’ or ‘teacher’s pet’…at least not in a serious fashion.
Stepping further up the line, she gave up. The room was too full and she was too short to see everyone and there was no guarantee that he would be here to begin with. She was just hoping for the company for her two hour break. It wasn’t like it was a big deal though; she could reopen the text book she had been studying from that morning and pick up where she had left off…though talking and relaxing did sound so much more appealing right now to her spinning head. She picked the sandwich and healthy dose of three pieces of fruit up and placed them on her tray alongside a vitamin water, before moving to pay for her meal, her purse jingling around her wrist as she stepped away from the serving area to look for somewhere or someone to sit with, sighing softly at the crowded hall.

Cole had to admit, college had gotten a lot better as of late. He was going okay in his classes, wasn't behind on his rent anymore, and could actually hold a more than decent conversation about the English language. Really, it was a miracle. In reality, he'd been all those things a week ago, minus the rent, but it all suddenly was happier. It was more fun trudging to a lecture in the morning when he knew he'd have company for lunch or even after classes for a study session. Cole had always liked school, it was just never too amazing for him with bullies and what not. On base, he'd been the nerd for loving books. Here, with a certain someone, he didn't feel so inferior. He felt like he finally had a friend who understood the constant need to have a nose buried in some novel or other. Finally, somebody understood.
He walked out of his last class before lunch, sighing in relief. Half the day was over now and the afternoon always seemed to fly by so fast. Whether that was because he only had one class or because he worked most days, he didn't know. But, Cole was happy he'd survived the morning. They were his least favorite time of the day; traffic, spilt coffee, and tired eyes didn't bode too well with him. Nights were much more to this owl's liking.
Cole made his way through the crowds migrating towards the Dining Hall, checking his phone quickly as he got stuck behind a group of kids blocking the hall. He was so hesitant to text Adora, the red head who'd recently studied her way into his life, but always held his breath for a message from her. He didn't know if she was coming to lunch today or not, and quickly debated sending something to her to ask. But, no, he couldn't. He wasn't one to get too into people's lives; he much preferred to stay outside all of that. If she wanted to eat with him, she'd be there. Right?
Moving through the doors and into line, Cole bought a sandwich and a bottle of water. He found a table near the windows and cleaned some garbage off the top before plopping down. There was a decent view of the food line from here, though it wasn't obvious. Him staring, however, would cause some snickers so he pulled out his latest novel, flipping open to a random page. He wasn't focused on reading it, not in the least. His eyes were searching for Adora, peeking up from the book every thirty seconds to look around for her. "Adora!" he called the moment he caught sight of her hair. A big smile took over his lips as he waved at her. Looked like lunch would be fun, after all.

She missed the staggered lunch hour that came with her old high school and the calm manner in which the students would go about it. There was less chaos, less frenzy and it didn’t remind her of feeding time at the zoo; lions racing to get the steaks thrown for them, not about to let anything or anyone stop them from getting what they craved the most. It was slightly amusing how college students also resembled those lions and Adora added another part to that thought as a guy with hair spiked bigger than Lady Liberty walked by, munching on an apple in a rather casual fashion. Yup, New York was filled with people she’d probably never understand.
That was why Cole had been a breath of fresh air in her life and quickly he had become someone Addy wanted to spend more time with. They could discuss almost anything together and it was nice to be able to tell someone about your day without them getting that glazed expression in their eyes when they couldn’t understand what you were talking about. Cole may not know all her medical jargon, but he always seemed polite enough to listen regardless. A lot of people would either interrupt her or zone out and there was nothing worse than feeling that people didn’t care. It may be a social nicety, but Addy sometimes wished that people wouldn’t ask questions if they weren’t interested in the answers people may give them. It was rude, in her own opinion.
The room was full to capacity and Adora saw no one she recognised. Contemplating eating her meal outside somewhere, the young freshman was about to leave when she was convinced someone called her name. There weren’t many names that sounded remotely like her own and so she turned, eyebrows furrowed as her pale blue eyes flicked across the sea of students until finally they picked out Cole, waving and grinning in her direction. Previous plans forgotten, she laughed, smiling back at him as she weaved her way to the table where he was sitting, carefully placing her bag on the floor before taking a seat opposite him. “Hey, Cole, I thought I’d missed you already.”She had been almost certain he wasn’t here, but now her mood was lighter and the fatigue from the morning classes seemed to simply vanish as she peeled back the wrapping of her sandwich and smiled warmly at the bookworm opposite her. “So, what are we reading today? Another epic adventure? Tear inducing tragedy? Or maybe it’s a historical masterpiece with a scattering of the supernatural?” She asked with genuine interest as she bent over the table to try and catch a glimpse of the cover. He always seemed to read some intriguing things and her book collection was multiplying faster than rabbits in the spring, thanks to his new place in her life. It was nice to have someone who shared similar interests to her, especially in a world where everything glittered, sparkled or was infused with alcohol.

Cole couldn't tell you if he missed high school or not. Parts of him did, sure. He missed not having to pay for a house, or having to work so many hours, and he occasionally missed his mother's cooking. But, outside of that, he preferred the freedom and breathing air of college. There were still people who played jungle around here, though they were much easier to avoid, and the classes were a bit harder, of course, but it was Cole's type of place. He could be an "adult" and not be treated like a little kid, even if he was only a freshman. He could pursue his love of English and not be teased or punished for it. He could be Cole and not have people laughing. It was heaven.
He grinned brightly at Addy as she made her way over to him. It was wonderful to finally have someone to eat lunch with and not get those pityful looks from other students passing by him when he sat alone. She'd been changing that state of loneliness a lot lately, but it didn't concern him. Not yet, anyways. "Nah, I usually pop in here to read after class if I don't have to work," he answered, though she'd probably figured that out already. They'd been eating together a lot lately and he usually told her when he had to work so she wouldn't worry. Cole had almost totally forgotten about his novel, and he chuckled when she brought it back up. "Some chick book for school work. We've got to 'expand outside outside our usually genres,'" he said, mimiking his professor's voice rather accurately, or so he thought. "What about you? Anything new?" Cole took another bite of his sandwich, waiting for her answer. He wasn't like normal people who'd zone out as soon as their company started talking. He honestly liked to talk with Addy, and was interested in her.

This freedom that New York had provided Adora with, was intriguing to the young red head. She was so used to living in a world of protective parents and quiet, well behaved friends that to come to a world full of temptation and treats was almost like going on a crazy vacation for her. She knew that she’d never turn into one of the party girls like she saw in the dorms every Friday night, fake tanned to the hilt with more make up on them than their faces could probably handle. She had already spent too much of her youth in the hospital to want to go back there with accidents or poisoning that had been caused from too much of a good time that she’d never remember, thanks to the disabling effects of liquor.
She was sensible enough to know what she was doing and even with the routine phone calls from the orange grove, Addy knew better than to run amuck in New York with her health issues and she was enjoying the chance to learn to fend for herself, balancing her wages out to make sure that she had enough food, laundry money and everything else for the month ahead once she got paid for her job at the museum. She loved being a tour guide there and it meant she got to brush up on her knowledge that wasn’t related at all to the medical profession that she was studying hard to eventually fall into one day. She wanted to give back to the people who had helped her for so many years.
Adora smiled at her friend as she loosely braided her hair and draped it over her shoulder, not tying the end to keep it secure; it was an old habit she had for when she was eating to save getting drops of mayonnaise or other sauces in her long copper locks. She bit into her sandwich, enjoying her lunch in the polite and dainty fashion that she did everything in. “The bubbling atmosphere makes it harder to forget how much time has passed?”She asked with a small smile. “I know when I’m in the library, I forget what time it is, how long I’ve been there and I have missed a class or two getting caught up in my books, both subject related and fictional.” She confessed before taking a long sip of her drink and pausing for a moment. Her blue eyes glanced at the cover and she smiled. Addy loved a good romance story as much as the next eighteen year old girl did, but her love of literature did expand to far beyond the boundaries of one genre. Her light eyes sparkled at his question and she pulled the hefty book from her bag, the cute rainbow bookmark peeking out from just before halfway. “It’s amazing. All about witches and demons and vampires. I know what you’re probably thinking, but the vampires don’t sparkle and it’s eerily realistic. It’s one of the best reads I’ve had in a while.”She said, talking fast with excitement, calming herself down before she got too carried away and needed to reach into her bag for her inhaler.

As an English Major, many people classified him as a "nerd". He reads? Ew, who does that. He spoke with correct grammar? Ugh, so old-fashioned. He loved discussing authors, themes, and writing styles? He was such a weirdo. Cole loved all of that though, and he wouldn't give it up for the world. He'd been teased about it all his life, so the remarks here flew over his head. Compared to some of the crap he'd had to endure, this was like a piece of friggin' cake.
Cole gave her a small smile as she fussed with her hair, finding the habit more adorable than he'd admit. He had noticed that she did that a lot when she ate, not that he minded; it was just another quirk he liked about her. Most girls were too concerned about messing up whatever "style" they'd put their locks into that morning to consider moving it while they ate. But, then again, most girls weren't Addy. "Haha, it's nice background noise. Makes it easier to concentrate most times," he answered, taking another bite of his own sandwich. The silence made him uncomfortable, even in his own apartment, so he found the dining hall to be a perfect substitute. It may not have been the most comfortable of locations, but it worked, none the less, and gave him a perfect opportunity to people watch.
His eyes turned to look at the book she pulled from her bag, laughing outright as she spoke of the vampires. "You're sure they don't sparkle?" Cole teased, shaking his head gently at her. This was the first person he'd ever met who could get as involved in a book as he could and it was oddly reassuring. It made him realize that nothing was wrong with him; he was in fact normal. He guessed that was why he got along so well with Addy. She was like him in more ways than one, and every time they met they kept finding new things in common. It probably should've scared him but, for the moment, Cole was just happy he had a friend to finally talk to. "Must be good if you like it that much. You just get it this morning?" he joked, looking at the location of her trademark bookmark. Cole knew she read as fast, if not faster, than he did, and that she had the ability to get swept away as easily as he did.

Adora was a medical student and it only took that sentence for people to presume that she was clever, going to save lives one day and the kind of girl who had every detail of her life planned down to the very last detail. They didn’t stop to ask why she wanted to be a doctor or what had driven her to that passion. She had spent her whole life experiencing first-hand how doctors worked and how they strived to save lives and give people the chance to make the most out of their lives. Adora wanted to do that. She wanted to give back to people and show them that life can be better again. She had been in the hospital every week during her childhood and she wanted to show people that she did understand their concerns and worries because she herself had lived through them.
She preferred the peace and quiet, but she wasn’t irritated by noise either. In fact, after the life she had lived thus far, there weren’t many things that really annoyed Addy. She could work with noise, without noise and with the in between stages too. Considering how much work she did for her major, it was probably a good thing too since she also lived in dorms. Moving into her own place wasn’t an option either yet since her job was only on the weekends and there was no chance of her ever being able to afford the rent until she increased her hours at the museum over the summer. “You’re one of the only people who would think that noise makes it easier to concentrate. I’ve seen far too many of the pre-med kids screaming at the rustling of paper.” A lot of her classmates took their time at NYU seriously, but they tried to force themselves into doing extra work when their stress levels were already at a maximum.
Playfully she swatted at his arm over the table and stuck her tongue out at him in a light hearted fashion. “I’m positive they don’t sparkle! And the protagonist isn’t some dependent teenage girl either.” She added pointedly as she danced her fingers over the cover of the book. She didn’t usually enjoy this kind of novel so much; usually they were light reads for during the exam period that involved vampires and witches. Pulling another face at her cute friend, Adora shook her head. “I got it at the weekend and started it last night. It’s amazing though! I’m struggling to put it down.” She confessed with a small, shy smile.
