Lexi was in one of those good moods that seemed to be irritating to all of those around her. That morning, Chelsea had told her sister to ‘go away’ but in much cruder terms that were unusual for the older Ryanne and since then each of her friends she had seen so far had mentioned that she was annoying them. Lexi put it down to the end of winter drawing near and without Christmas or New Year celebrations to keep spirits up and with the sleek snow now nothing but annoying ice and slush, it seemed like there was very little people had keep people in good moods. Once spring had made itself more noticeable she was sure people would understand that all she was happy about was another good day where she wasn’t weighed down with the stresses of schoolwork, antsy boyfriends getting paranoid in work when they couldn’t decide on the perfect ring. Lexi loved helping them out and hearing their romantic tales, but add them to the Christmas rush and it was something that eventually wore thin, even for the hopeless romantic Lexi was.
So, after lunch, she decided to give her friends a break from whatever it was she was doing that was grating thin on their high society patience. Maybe it was because she didn’t have a reason that satisfied their gossiping curiosity for today’s smile? Lexi pondered the thought as she brushed the hair from her eyes, and weaved through the crowds of students in the hallways. She didn’t have a class until four and with a few hours to kill and her mind not wanting to spend the free hours working through another unnecessary history book, Lexi made her way outside, hoping to bump into someone in the courtyard who she could chat with for a little while without them thinking she was overly merry.
She hummed the song that had been playing on the radio that morning and that had been stuck in her head ever since she parked her car in the lot. Lexi grabbed herself an iced tea on the way out and a small muffin to satisfy the unusual sweet tooth craving she had felt since her last lecture of the morning when she had been learning about the most recent findings of archaeologists in south Peru. Her professor had been giddier than a school girl and Lexi had to bite back her giggles every time the aged man pulled off his glasses and then ran his fingers through his hair, something like a character out of an old movie with a dramatic professor. It was amusing and Lexi hardly caught what the majority of these findings were because she was being so entertained by the performance her professor was putting on.
Lexi’s dark eyes were scanning the busy courtyard for someone she recognised but to no avail. She was about to turn on her chunky heel and leave when a familiar head of blonde hair caught her eyes. The petite brunette moved across the concrete and smiled when she realised her guess had been right. Popping herself down on the bench shared by her friend, Lexi smoothed out her flowing skirt and greeting the blonde with a cheery, “Hey!”

Rina couldn’t really believe her luck that she could work her career schedule around her class one. At least, for the most part she could. There was still that odd time when she had to skip a lecture or a couple classes but she had friends who gave her copies of their notes. She didn’t miss school often, but when that odd time arose, it was always for something important; like a job to get money to pay for school in the first place. She was there on her own dime and though she had quite a bit saved up, she didn’t want to be left hanging in case anything ever happened.
This morning was one of those mornings she had to skip. Spring brought on new photo shoots, new designs and new job opportunities. Sorina Lupescu wasn’t a house hold name, known the world over like Heidi Klum but in the fashion world, the young Romanian model was in pretty high demand. This particular morning, for instance, was a studio shoot for the new DSquared summer line. She wasn’t the face of the brand by any means, but she was one of many. With a House like DSquared, they never had a single model or actress to sell their clothes; they had dozens and let the clothes speak for themselves. Just this morning, when Rina arrived at the studio at a before-the-sun-even-thought-about-rising 5 am, she was greeted with three other young women and six very yummy men with washboard abs; one was even intelligent!
Rina had worked, flirted and eventually walked out of that studio, hours later with a job completed, the stunning intellectual’s number and a date for the following evening; dinner and dancing. Ever the fashionista, Rina had her date outfit all planned out before she stepped from the building! Checking her watch, she hailed a cab for her College. She had some time before her only actual class of the day; thankfully, this work day worked out well for the young business student. A couple streets away, the traffic started slowing down and instead of waiting, and racking up the fare, Rina paid and chose to walk the rest of the three blocks.
The weather was working in her favour, so she didn’t mind the walk in her pretty new dress. Halfway to the school, Rina stopped at a quaint little café and grabbed herself a veggie Panini with extra banana peppers and a mocha latte with a double shot of espresso; she’d need the buzz to get through the three hour class alive. With her order ready and paid for, the young blonde took it to go and headed for the school again. She was in pretty high spirits. Working did that to her, and she really didn’t mind the odd looks that her smiling face brought on. She had food, coffee and a date to look forward to.
Since she’d been cleared of the AML, Rina promised herself she wouldn’t worry herself over everyone else’s actions; only her own and the ones of her friends because she cared about them. She finally had a life to live and she was damned if she wasn’t going to spend it doing things that didn’t make her happy. At the school, she checked her phone for the time and realized she still had quite a bit of it left to do whatever she wanted, really, short of jetting off to some tropical local. She could eat in peace and start on the next chapter in the text book she’d been highlighting notes in on all her breaks and during hair and make-up. So far she was two chapters ahead of the assignment, but Rina prided herself on being prepared for anything; it was also the reason she kept a small arsenal of beauty supplies on her.
Rina headed straight to the courtyard and the first available spot when she got there. She was still too wired from work to be indoors just yet. The pretty blonde sat and started on her notes while eating her sandwich. She took the last bite when she felt someone sit down next to her with a cheerful greeting. It took her a second to really realize it was directed at her. She’d been so engrossed in the text, but her head still snapped up and turned towards the voice as soon as her eyes found the end of the sentence. A happy smile spread across her features when she saw it was Lexi who’d taken up the free seat next to her. “Hey! How’s it going?” she asked, closing the textbook with the highlighter marking its place. Eventually she would transfer all her notes to a document on her laptop, being the overly organized soul that she was, but she could forget about that until she was curled up in a pair of pajamas in the comfort of her own home.

Lexi had to stop making a habit of meeting new people by having accidents. First, she had met Denver via a fly-away football and a few days later had befriended Rina when coffee decided to hate her and threaten to mar her hand. It was not a healthy way to socialise and the brunette was certain this recent bout of unusual clumsiness wouldn’t last long. So far, she had been right and there had been no more accidents since then, but still. Plus, Rina was a nice change from most of the girls she already knew. She seemed much more down to earth and relaxed than some of the socialites who dwelled far too much on their bank accounts and the new shoes they had seen in the city. Whilst Lexi’s own thoughts could drift to things like that on occasion, she was far happier just hanging out and talking about anything and everything. Her wardrobe was pretty packed and she could splurge on unnecessary things as well as anyone else, but that wasn’t who she was as a person, not by a long shot and these accidental introductions had provided her with opportunities to be more than just that.
Some people only spoke to her because she was in the social circles with the rest of her family. Out of all of them Lexi was the Ryanne who strayed the farthest away from that, but she did have to attend certain galas and events just to keep the family name above water and to keep her parents happy. They understood her need to be her own person, but turning up in an expensive dress and wearing a smile was her way of compromising with them for her freedom away from that scene for most of the year. The fundraisers, she enjoyed and they were for a good cause, but other events did just seem to be a way to flaunt whatever extravagant purchase came next.
She noticed her friend seemed happy as well today, not that it was unusual for Sorina. Whenever Lexi saw her she always seemed to be in good spirits and a jovial mood, but today she seemed to have a little more of a spark to her, or maybe it was Lexi’s optimistic and cheery mood making her think that. Either way, she was relieved not to be greeted with a scowl and a snappy tone; it made a nice change after the morning of PMS-ing bitchiness. “Everything is great and summer will be here before we know it!”
She said, laughing softly. Compared to Lexi’s usual good moods, this was extreme and a little curious, even for the short brunette, who couldn’t explain it fully herself. “What about you? You seem to be pretty happy yourself, which is a much welcomed change.” The campus itself looked glum, but then maybe her previous idea had been correct and maybe everyone was in mourning that the holidays were long gone until the end of the year again. Lexi crossed her tanned legs and sipped her iced tea. The only thing that would have made this more relaxing would be if they were down by the harbor with a nice view to distract them from the daily woes of the world, not that it seemed to be dragging either of the girls down thus far. She fixed her brown eyes on her friend and smirked, venturing few guesses behind the blonde’s good mood. “There’s either a hunky guy involved or you’ve just found the cutest pair of shoes in New York in your size and on sale.” She joked, knowing that the latter was always a valid reason to exhume happiness. Rina made friends easily enough, but there were only a select few she ever really bothered spending any time with. She’d found, after doing that once or twice with a few, they were more interested in how much she had in her bank account to afford all the spectacular clothes she’d mostly gotten from shoots, than anything the young Romanian actually had to say. And forget get a shopping trip. Those girls were all about talking trash about other shoppers, and gossiping about their lives. Rina didn’t know who those people were, but she knew talking about how their husband was cheating with his secretary and she was clueless was not a pastime she wanted any part of. She learned quickly who to avoid and who was actually sincere.
Besides the fact that she had enough friends like that in the industry that she didn’t need them outside of it too. When she’d met Lexi, Rina was actually pleased that she’d met someone who was more like her; someone who didn’t care about the glitz and the glam so much as the personal. They’d hit it off, even though they had met under rocky circumstances. She hadn’t shared much about her professional life, but Rina was like that, preferring to have friends who liked the girl and not the model; Lexi was one of those select people. She didn’t know about Rina being a model, but chances were, if her sunny mood kept up, she’d find out eventually. Especially since she’d have to explain how she’d met her date. Rina wasn’t about lying, in fact, she hated it. So when she was asked a straight forward question, or really, any question at all, she responded with the truth, even if it bordered on over sharing.
Sorina nodded, looking around the courtyard of NYU; the people that were around were all bleh, and depressing; the complete opposite of both their cheerful moods. Snow melting couldn’t be all that bad, it meant swim suit season was coming, and that meant dozens of trips to the beach, mini skirts and short shorts, with flimsy tank tops and outdoor parties. Of all the season, summer was Rina’s all time favourite with Fall coming in a close second. Summer had fashion shows, photo shoots, trips around the world. Fall had leaves changing, great warm clothes and an excuse to curl up in front of her fireplace with a good book and a oversized mug of hot cocoa. And winter, well that meant trips skiing- or in her case snowboarding and showing up the guys on the mountain said that said she couldn’t possibly know how to snowboard because she lived in the city. “People need happy pills, really. Life’s not usually that shitty, I would know!” she said, chuckling.
Now that she was free and clear of the AML, she could make jokes about it. It had taken a seriously long time to get to that point, but now that she was there, jokes about something no one else was privy too amused her. One day she knew she’d get the courage to tell the world what her childhood was like, but for the time being, she just enjoyed letting people think she had a normal upbringing in the suburbs of Bucharest. It wasn’t too much of a stretch at least; not for the first seven years anyway. Rina smiled, lifting her cooling drink to her lips and taking a couple tentative sips to make sure she wouldn’t burn her tongue in the process of downing it.
Rina tilted her head and thought about that darling, gorgeous man from the shoot. “God, I wish! Shoes would be the perfect icing to this cake,” she said, laughing. She was in such fine spirits. And it was so easy to joke around with friends that she didn’t even think about it. “I don’t think I’d go so far as to say hunky, he was wirier than anything,” she said, smirking. “And we’re going out tomorrow night. I have my entire outfit already figured out,” she admitted laughing happily. There wasn’t much that could bring her down right then. She was enjoying the moment too much to let anything bother her.

The glamour and glitter of the socialite world didn’t appeal to Lexi at all. Her eldest sisters were more into that than she could ever be and whilst she didn’t judge them for it, she also didn’t understand why they could enjoy it so much when it was so full of bitchiness and backstabbing. There was a reason her bulimia and stint in rehab had been kept between the family and why everyone else thought she had gone to visit her mother’s relatives on the opposite coast during her rehabilitation months. Most people she knew recognised her name thanks to her sisters or the galas everyone frequently attended. Lexi only went to those that mattered or that her father asked her to make an appearance at, but the Ryanne name rang true to those families who did find bliss in fancy gowns and endless mingling.
Lexi adored Rina’s company for that reason; she wasn’t ‘in’ with all that unnecessary glitz. Whilst Lexi had established from the fashionista’s clothes that she had some money, it wasn’t something that bothered her or even appealed to her. Sure, they could go shopping some time, but Lexi was far happier when they could just hang out like this and not have to worry about everything being a certain way or manner. Maybe they didn’t know each other all that well yet, but then neither girl seemed too fazed or bothered by the lack of personal details they revealed in their conversations. Lexi liked to keep parts of her life private and maybe Rina was the same; not all girls needed to be the centre of attention with their drama on show for the world to find a role in.
She didn’t know what was wrong with everyone else on campus today, but she was glad Rina wasn’t dragged down to gloominess with the rest. The spring months may not be the best, but there wasn’t wrong with them either. A bit of rain, some winds…it could happen whenever and all that really changed was how people dressed for it! If an impromptu rainstorm fell in the summer months people still wandered around in shorts and vests like it was no big deal. “Maybe we’re missing something. Maybe there was national tragedy or something. I skipped the news this morning in favour of getting a bagel.”
She winced slightly and then shrugged. She doubted anything of vast importance could be the thing that had killed the mood of every student on campus practically. “Shoes are the perfect icing to every cake.” She laughed, raising her drink to her lips again and leaning back in her seat slightly. She raised her eyebrows in a teasing manner and nudged her blonde friend lightly. “So, that’s your type, eh?” She said jokingly before sighing dreamily. A hopeless romantic at heart, Lexi adored thinking about things like this and after a date was over she often spent hours reliving her favourite moments with herself, smiling like an idiot to the rest of the world around her. “Ah, I wish I was in your shoes. My only date tomorrow night is with a five hour shift and Ron the security guard who’ll be locking up shop with me.” He was in his fifties and a friendly man who spoke excessively about his family. Tomorrow night was the one night of the week where Lexi’s manager left her in charge of locking everything down for the night; a responsibility she didn’t quite understand why she had, but she was happy that her superiors felt she could be trusted with it. “So, what are you wearing? Where are you going?” She chuckled softly, grinning at Rina as their conversation delved deeper into girl talk. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Rina enjoyed Lexi’s company. She wasn’t like a lot of the girls Rina had met since moving to New York. They were catty, undermining and wore their makeup so caked on, you didn’t know if it was their face or a mask. Rina wasn’t into that unless it was for work, and even then she made sure to wash it all off before she left the shoot. And it was as obvious to Rina as it was to Lexi that the other girl had money to spare, but it didn’t seem to bother either of them. Rina much preferred to spend her time away from clothing and the crowds of shopping anyway; that, and she got nearly half of her wardrobe from jobs, so there was almost no need to go shopping, besides to get the basics, of course.
Sorina nodded, laughing. “That must be it. I was at work before even the sun clocked in,” she said, shaking her head. “Though, I’m sure someone with a phone would have said something.” At least, she thought someone would have. There were plenty of phones with internet capabilities; surely if something so important it had the entire campus in a fuss, someone would have heard about it. It wasn’t like they’d been out of the country, or even out of a service zone! They’d been only a handful of blocks away from Times Square; everyone got service! “Some people just don’t like the slush,” Rina mused, sipping her coffee.
Rina lifted her cup in salute to Lexi’s statement. “Shoes are just perfect!” she said, chuckling before consuming nearly half of what was left of her coffee. Rina sat back against the bench, looking distant. She didn’t really have a specific type of man. She wasn’t exactly “boy-crazy” like her sister, and she rather pretend like she wasn’t getting some men’s advances than actually speak to them. Love, or even men and sex hadn’t been high on her bucket list as a young teenager, and even now with her career, men barely registered. Oh, there were a few that caught the Romanian models attention. She casually dated, but none of them really lasted long. The problem with Rina was that she got bored.
She hated dull conversations, and loved off-beat conversations rather than “safe” topics. The weather, her career, school, those were interesting- at first, but after those pleasantries, those topics Rina considered polite chatter, she wanted something more, something different. She wanted something completely off hand, silly, even completely ridiculous to laugh at. Basically, when you brought it right down to it, Sorina wanted to laugh and actually feel like she was really with the person and not some false self, only promoting the charismatic side of themselves. “I don’t know what my type is,” she said honestly, shaking her head and looking over at her friend, amused.
Rina smiled behind her coffee cup before she took another mouthful of caffeine. “I’m sure Ron is a lovely man with discussions ranging further than the weather and work,” the blonde said, smirking. She’d only been to Tiffany’s once after meeting Lexi, and it was for a birthday gift for her mother. Spotting Lexi, Rina had rushed right over and gotten the other girls’ help with the task. While they’d been deciding between two different bracelets, the security did their rounds, and Rina had seen two. Now, which of the two was Ron, she didn’t have a clue, if it was either at all, but she was sure there would be better conversation than her last date had.
Clothing was something Rina could really sink her teeth into. Before she’d been approached at the mall in Bucharest, she hadn’t much cared for clothes. Sure she could mix and match well, she had accessories piled everywhere in her room and she had a half wall dedicated to shoes in her closet, but clothes? They didn’t concern her. Afterwards was a different story. She hadn’t known anything when she went into the offices the week later, when she came out and started going on go-sees, she was getting there. And now, clothing was practically her life. Well, it was her career, at least.
“I just got this great gold tone dress I’ve been dying to wear out. And I have two pairs of shoes in mind, so I have to decide on that,” she said, shaking her head. Shoes were her kryptonite. She had so many pairs; she didn’t know what to do with them all. It was almost like pulling teeth trying to decide on the shoes alone! “I don’t know what I’m doing with my hair, but I’ll probably go smoky with the eyes and pale lips, maybe a tinted gloss. As for where? I have no clue. I was told we’d do dinner and dancing,” she said with a shrug. She loved surprises, still even after the major one when she was seven, so she’d stay in the dark and not try for any hints until he showed up at her door at eight thirty for their reservations.

They were only recent friends, but Lexi did feel very comfortable in Rina’s presence. She usually made a habit of putting a mask on when she was socialising with people to keep them from finding out her secrets. Her friends, their popularity and their bitchiness often meant that if one discovered a secret then it was only a matter of short time before the rest knew too and then it was usually over for whoever’s secret was now public news. Lexi knew Rina wasn’t like that though, so she didn’t feel like she had to keep on the edge of their friendship, just in case she let something slip. With Rina they could chat, hang out and share stories without either of them needing to feel like the whole world would know everything about them in a matter of seconds once they parted ways.
Giggling lightly, Lexi stretched her legs out before her and nodded in agreement. “Well, every other bit of gossip travels that fast so you’d think something massive and world breaking would do the same.”
She said, crossing her ankles and finding a comfy position to sit in. It was far from summer yet, but the day was beautiful for the time of year and she still couldn’t fathom why no one else wanted to see it the way she did, but instead wanted to sulk and moan about every other little thing instead. It was amazing what a little bit of sun could do for her mood. Lexi had to agree, again, with what Rina said. Shoes were usually the thing that put her good mood through the roof and made her want to spend the night dancing in whatever stilettos, boots or pumps she had gone and spent some ridiculous amount of money on. They were usually more reliable than men too and the only thing they hurt were her feet and that was usually a pain that would vanish after a few hours. There hadn’t been anyone who had hurt Lexi in recent years, but that was mainly because the young historian had been more involved with enjoying her life and with only a few casual relationships and the oddly now regretted drunk fling, she was still a lot less jaded than some of the girls she socialised with or her sisters. Plus, she was a romantic and a dreamer, so she rarely wanted to see the bad in anyone her chestnut eyes fell upon and lingered upon. And, when she did meet someone she liked she wasn’t the kind of girl to giggle to her friends about him, just in case it jinxed it or caused more trouble. No one had heard Lexi talk of Denver yet; they just knew there was someone stealing her time away. Listening to what Rina said, Lexi realised that her friend’s words rang true to her too. Lexi didn’t really have anything she could declare to be a ‘type’. She had a habit of liking guys with blue eyes, but that was about as far as it went with things that they had in common. She was definitely the kind of girl who usually liked to get to know someone first, but that was probably because she had a habit of looking for the Prince Charming within everyone she met. “Maybe it’s something you have to have other people tell you about.” She mused, chewing her lip in thought before she sipped at her drink again. Maybe it was the friends and family who saw what a person went for whenever they started dating someone. They always saw the version of them without the rose tinted glasses and the hopes that were sometimes pinned on new relationships. Another bubble of laughter burst from her glossed lips and Lexi nodded. “I’m sure his wife is lucky to have him.” She said with a small smile. Ron was the kind of friendly guy who it was impossible to have a problem with. He was always cheery, always polite and always struck up conversation when the store was quiet and the girls were looking bored. As much as she adored locking up with him for the laughter they shared, she still could think of a hundred better places she could be. “Still, she does make a delicious lemon cake that she sends in with him every now and then.” Her sweet tooth could barely handle it, but it was so delicious she simply had to force a slice down whenever he offered her a bit. Her outfit sounded perfect for Rina and Lexi’s smile grew as she heard more details about what the blonde had planned for her night. Their styles were slightly different, but Lexi simply adored most of the clothes she saw her friend in. She definitely had a wonderful choice in her outfits and Lexi was certain that Rina could make a black plastic bag look good if she was forced to wear one. “Sounds amazing to me. If I was this mystery man, I wouldn’t be able to keep my eyes off you.” She joked, nudging her friend playfully and winking. “I don’t know how you can be so calm about not knowing where you’re going. I’m usually freaking out in case I’m overdressed or underdressed or if my shoes are too high for long distance walking.” She said with a delicate laugh. Rina hadn’t known Lexi long, but it had honestly been the easiest friendship of the young models life. The people around her usually wanted something from her, and when she was hanging out with Lexi, it was just them, chatting about life and school and the drama neither of them wanted any part of, aside from laughing at the foolishness of it all. Growing up she’d never had that, being in the hospital, and then afterward, it was just too difficult to have many friends because they all wanted to know how she stopped going to school when they were seven and was coming back now, after all these years and already a junior. But, of course, no one knew about the AML; no one. And Rina just told everyone her mother wanted to home school her and left it at that.
There was none of that drama with Lexi. Rina giggled, “You’d think so, but apparently we’re the only ones that do.” If there had been something serious, she was sure everyone would be talking about it. But the people that were milling around weren’t saying much and Rina figured it was just the weather bringing people down. Well, she wasn’t letting the slush get her down. It wasn’t her favourite weather, but after the morning she’d had, who could really blame her good mood? No one she knew of anyway. Rina sipped at her drink slowly, testing it in case it was still hot enough to burn her tongue; it wasn’t. “That must be it. I’d hate to hear what someone would have to say about my type,” Rina shuddered, laughing. “Though I guess they’d have to meet all the guy’s I’ve ever dated to nail that down, wouldn’t they?” She asked, honestly. If that were the case, sadly all Rina would have to do was go down to Times Square and point at four different billboards; all but two casual dates were there for the world to see.
The young blonde snapped her fingers. “Damn, maybe next time,” she said joking. From the stories she’d heard, the man was a sweetheart, not that she’d heard more than one or two; but still. Rina had always wanted a relationship like that; romantic. The girl for all her faults was a hopeless romantic. She loved the idea of someone sweeping her off her feet, stopping by just because he wanted to see her and bringing flowers along. She wanted the happiness she saw in the eyes of those people who you could just tell were so madly in love. It was so sweet. “Is the lemon cake that good?” she asked, taking a moment to jump back to the cake. She’d never been allowed desserts as child, something she’d been making up for ever since. She didn’t care if she gained a few grams, she’d hit a gym, take Tails out for a run. Just because she was a model, didn’t mean she didn’t indulge nearly every time she past a bakery.
Rina laughed, nodding her head. The whole reason she’d decided on that particular dress, besides the fact that she rarely got to wear it out, was that it was a head turner, and she wanted to have some jaws drop. What was the use of going out if you weren’t trying to impress someone; not that she was going to be trying hard. They had more in common than modeling and travel. “That’s the point!” she said, laughing. She hadn’t been out on a proper date in ages. She’d been so consumed with work and school and guys rarely factored into her plans. She hit the clubs and met some nice people, willing to spend their money on her drinks, but she’d never been interested in that. She had her own money and could throw down a few bills of her own for her drinks; but every once in a while it was nice not to have to worry.
Sorina shrugged. It wasn’t a huge deal, really. He wasn’t from New York. He was only in town for some go-sees and then he was going back to LA and Rina was staying in the City to work and go to school. But it would be fun while it lasted, and it would take away thoughts of Business studies and homework. “It’s a surprise. You’ve just got to roll with it,” she said lightly. She was sure, if things had gone differently, Rina wouldn’t have been as tiny as she was, she wouldn’t have been at that mall, she wouldn’t have been discovered, and she wouldn’t have found her way to New York. She would have found a cute little job in Bucharest, gone to school there and found a nice man there that her parents’ approved of. But that hadn’t been how things had turned out, and she was really, actually thankful for that. Rina couldn’t picture a world where she wasn’t this carefree and adventurous.

In theory, it wasn’t hard to find friends in a city as expansive as New York was, but as was the situation all over the world, it was hard to find friends who were just then just people to gossip with and drag to the shops when you needed a new outfit. Some people just clicked right away, as had been the case with Lexi and Rina and those were the friends who you could relax around and talk to about the littlest or sometimes the biggest of things. The petite brunette was fairy certain that if something major happened in her life or she needed some advice that Rina would be the girl she would turn to after her sisters were eliminated from her options. She just had this great trust in the blonde that she didn’t have in many others she had met over the years.
Lexi sighed softly and then nudged her friend’s shoulder lightly with her own. “Well, if there’s ever an earth shattering event that we need to know about, I promise to tell you first, just in case this happens then too.”
She said, only partly joking. The way so many people didn’t know about important news stories baffled her almost as much as the plot of Inception had. She shrugged her shoulders and tapped the sealed bottle of ice tea against her leg as she thought the idea over. Did everyone date a certain ‘type’? Was there ever an anomaly; a guy who didn’t fit in with the rest? She didn’t know, but now she was a little curious and pretty certain that the thought would occupy her mind until her next class. “Maybe not all of them. I mean, we can leave out the flings and the guys you hook up with when drunk out of your skull. No, they’d just have to meet the serious ones or the ones that you really liked a lot at some point.” Lexi said casually. She didn’t know much of Rina’s love life since it had never come up in conversation and it would be rude to just ask about it. Thinking of herself, Lexi only had one, maybe two, guys she could pull into that category. The rest had been set ups by her friends or sisters and hadn’t gone further than a second date which was mainly because Lexi didn’t have the heart to end it with some of them after the first one. She let out a small laugh and shook her head as she crossed her legs the other way again. “I’d never date anyone at work, mainly because they’re pretty much all women, or they scare the life out of me with one look.” She said. “The new security guard they hired is like the creepiest guy on the planet. I’m sure he’s a killer in disguise.” She said, dramatically shuddering at her tale and biting back a small smile. The guy genuinely was scary as hell though and Lexi hated being left alone with him in case he snapped her neck with his bare hands. “It’s to die for! And I don’t usually like cake or anything sweet like that.” She explained, tucking her hair behind her ears again as the wind picked up a little and blew dark strands into her eyes. Lexi laughed along with her friend and smiled. Her own style was always neat and tidy, but she was a little shy of wearing some of the outfits she saw women of her own age wearing. She had a few tight dresses and short skirts, but Lexi was more comfortable in her more conservative wardrobe selection when it came to dates. She didn’t like to give off a desperate vibe or dress as though she was planning on bringing the guy home that very night. She couldn’t pull off some of Rina’s styles without looking a mess, but then they were so vastly different when it came to their looks that it made sense that their sometimes similar styles were also very much opposites at times. “I just hope, for your sake, that the guy can close his mouth to chew his food!” The short haired brunette did appreciate surprises and she loved the butterflies that flew around her stomach with anticipation, but at the same time, Lexi liked to be prepared for what was ahead and for her that meant what shoes were going to leave her feet aching less, what kind of outfit was appropriate…that sort of thing. The finer details could be kept a secret from her, so long as she had a few vague ideas of what was in store for her. “I know. I just always have visions of showing up for a surprise and finding out that I’m about to run around Central Park in a pair of stilettos.” It had happened once and it was not a fun way to spend the day and the foot spa was out the second Lexi was through her apartment door. Sorina enjoyed the fact that she had someone other than her sister to talk to about this all. Maddie was a great listener, but with all the crap she had to deal with as a little girl because of Rina, she didn’t want to dump anything more on her; even if her baby sister begged to hear it all and help. Lexi didn’t know about her childhood, so it was easier to talk to her. She didn’t get all excited thinking this next boy was the one, she told Rina what she thought and how she felt about it, without putting the fact that Rina almost died at seven in play like her family did. She’d survived, that should have been enough for the rest of her family to be optimistic about life but when it came to the blonde model, they just didn’t have it in them apparently. “And I promise the same to you, Lexi,” Rina said, smiling. She didn’t get how everyone could be so bleh when it was a nice day or how they all seemed to have a mass freak out when they heard bad news.
Rina hadn’t thought much about the guys she’d dated. They were all so few and far between to really consider they all had similarities of some sort. Sorina laughed, shaking her head. “Well, that narrows it down to, oh, two for me, and neither of them are even in this country, that I’m aware of. Oh, unless you count puppy love that lead absolutely nowhere. ‘Cause in that case, I’m up to three. What about you?” she asked, curious despite herself. She could remember all three of them very clearly as if they were standing before her. Of course, at sixteen, thinking you may not make it to twenty, something was bound to happen.
The young blonde had thought she was in love, but it was merely a fascination and fizzled out within two years. The other two lasted less than that. The one before that was puppy love, she’d been barely a teenage, and she’d started modeling then, too. It had all been so exciting, and fun, but that had been all it was. And the last of the three had been a summer fling that last six months after the fact and had taken place over three different continents. But none had given her the promises her heart desired and she ultimately chose school and work over a love life that lasted more than a handful of dates.
Sorina nodded her head laughing. “That one guy, with the tattoo on his left arm, he’s kind of scary. I noticed him the last time I stopped at the store,” she said, shuddering. After what she’d been through, there wasn’t much that scared her anymore, but that guy gave her the chills. Probably because she knew he could do harm if he had to. And really, he was probably a big ol’ teddy bear, but looks were deceiving, and Rina was properly deceived. “Is that the same guy?” she asked, wondering if the two were one and the same. But Rina was happy that they were no longer talking about creepy creeper, and onto happier topics. “Oh, I love sweets. I’m an addict,” she said with a shrug and a sweet smile.
“Gross!” she said laughing. “I’m definitely clear there, we had breakfast this morning,” she said, unaware how double edged that sounded. Rina didn’t do dates often, as she’d said time and again. There just wasn’t much time to with school and modeling. But every now and then she had to make an exception and go out on the town with someone. It didn’t have to lead anywhere than the dance floor and a few shots at the bar but that was enough to Rina sometimes. And this date was exciting really. She had no clue where she was going, or how long she’d been out, if she’d end up working the walk of shame, or waking up alone in her apartment with her sister brewing coffee. At least she knew he had all the necessities of a model, so the chances that she wouldn’t be walking home in just her dress was high; he’d have a blazer, or two and she could snag one.
Doing what she did gave her a ton of ideas for quick fixes in those situations. Borrowing this and that, using tape or safety pins to alter its appearance; she was good. Rina laughed, “That would be terrible!” She knew the shoes both girls wore were killers having to walk in sometimes. Having to run in them would be worse than that, no question. “He said we’d do dinner and dancing, so I’m going to guess there will be no excessive running,” she said with a shudder. She sure as hell hoped there wouldn’t be running. She exercised as much as the next girl, she had to if she didn’t want to chance getting sick or losing a spot on the runway, but that didn’t mean she didn’t hate running.

There was a beauty in making new friends at this stage in life and it was that they didn’t know all the skeletons that lingered in the closets and you got to choose what you revealed, if anything. For Lexi, meeting people who didn’t know her pre-senior year was a blessing. It meant there were no comments on how she had physically changed, no questions about what she had done to get to how she was now and there was nothing to worry about them ever finding out what had really happened in Lexi’s mind when she was still a child in the eyes of the law. It was a beautiful thing for everyone, not just the dark haired historian.
She smiled at her friend and then shrugged her shoulders lightly, tipping her head back as she thought about the question. A small blush danced across her cheeks as the answer dawned on her. She’d dated a few random guys since high school and there had been one or two shameful flings after too many cocktails on a night out, but serious feelings for someone? “Seriously? Just the one guy.”
As the words left her lips, images of Denver flooded her mind. How she could like a guy as much as she liked him after such a short time was almost mind boggling and she bit her lip to try and fight back the smile, but the blush that was pretty much connected to the young doctor was already flooding her cheeks. Chuckling softly, she shrugged her shoulders and then glanced across the courtyard, that smile still dancing on her lips as she tried to pull herself together again. Maybe she should have made her answer ‘two’, though the thought of that sent the butterflies racing through her stomach again. Actually relationships had been a mystery of sorts for the young woman before her ‘transformation’. Since then, finding guys who weren’t arrogant assholes or rich and thought that they were the greatest thing since sliced bread, was not a skill she had developed. She liked guys who listened, who took an interest even if they weren’t interested. Maybe she was just too fussy, or maybe she didn’t want her fragile heart shattered time and time again. Lexi thought for a moment and then nodded her head vigorously. The new guy did have a tattoo on his arm and when asked about it he mumbled something about it meaning ‘warrior’ and an ancient symbol for something or the other that didn’t exactly put Lexi’s mind at ease. He was the kind of guy who told you he distrusted you with just his burning eyes. “Yeah, that’s him. I hope no one ever tries anything when he’s working. I believe he may break the neck of someone, at least! She confessed, shaking her head slowly. “Sweet things always make me feel bloated and sick. I want to hit the yoga mat.” She answered with a casual shrug. Of course, she did indulge every so often, but she wasn’t the girl who could eat chocolate all of the time. Her dark eyebrows vanished under the dark bangs that covered her forehead and Lexi looked at how oblivious her friend seemed to the words she had just spoken. For clarification, Lexi pushed her for more details. “Breakfast?” The smirk tickled her lips and she shot her friend an expression that clearly said ‘spill’. No one could say something like that without expanding on the comment. She shrugged her shoulders, cocking her head to the side and throwing her friend a playful look. “Unless he’s got a secret life that catches up with him on the date. Ooh! He might be a spy!” Obviously, Lexi was joking, but it was something to brighten the good day that no one else seemed to be sharing with them. Rina had become a small bit of a wild child when she was modeling full time during her teens. But she also still had the mindset that she would develop another cancer or something and not live a full two decades. So, she went a little crazy with the parties and the flirting, though she rarely slept with any of them. The one she spoke of that lasted the longest was the one she thought she might tell the truth to; just in case something happened to her while they were together. But just as she’d gotten up the courage to tell him, they split. The young blonde had been in love and he had only thought of her as a better rise to fame. She’d been just another peg on the ladder than led him to nowhere in the end. His career had fizzled out shortly after they went their separate ways. The other one that had last just over a year had ended on worse terms; she had found him in bed with the barista from the Starbucks they frequented. Rina believed in second chances, how could she not, but she didn’t think everyone deserved them, and he certainly hadn’t. “I was young and naïve, I’ve learned my lesson,” she said, sipping her drink.
The young blonde shuddered at the thought of someone trying to steal from Tiffany’s with that guy on shift. They certainly wouldn’t get very far. She nodded, agreeing completely with Lexi. That man looked capable of doing just about anything if pushed far enough. “That would be something he looks very capable of doing,” she said, sipping from her drink. Sorina’s frown turned quickly into a grin though, with the mention of sweets. “I know that. I have a terrible sweet tooth but I almost always have to go for a jog or something afterwards.” The joys of doing what she loved to do.
Rina’s cheeks burned when Lexi prompted her. She hadn’t even realized how that might have sounded. She had meant it completely innocently, but of course, it hardly sounded innocent and right after she said she didn’t sleep around or anything. Sorina burst out laughing, waving her hands. “Oh, god, that sounded bad, didn’t it?” she asked, not expecting an answer. She shook her head before running the fingers of her free hand through her long, thick hair. “I was working this morning. On one of our breaks we hit up this cheesy diner for some breakfast with the others,” she said explaining that it wasn’t anything. She wasn’t entirely sure if she ever told Lexi what it was that she did.
Telling people she was a model wasn’t high on her list of conversation starters and something she ended up spilling because of a tale she was telling. It wasn’t like she was keeping it to herself, that was a little hard to do when there were times her face was one of many plastered on the buildings of Times Square, but it was something she tended to forget. Modeling was her job, but she wasn’t sure she wanted it to be her career. She snapped her fingers, sighing. “Damn, I’ve already filled my quota of spies… Hopefully he’ll be a ninja or a pirate. I still have them on the list,” she said with a roll of her eyes.
