It felt as though it had been far too long since Dawson had spent time with his bro-friend Caleb. There had been a time when the two saw each other more than anyone could regard as being healthy but recently it had been nothing but passing conversations when they had a few spare minutes at work. He missed the old days, but he was happy that Caleb had finally stopped pining like some love sick Romeo and finally had got his act together and ended up with Ayden. What the ginger haired mathematician hadn’t expected though was the whirlwind in which marriage seemed to have happened! Dawson was rarely ever surprised, but that news had rendered him speechless for some time and he had gone home convinced that someone must have spiked his drink or that Caleb was getting increasingly better at playing pranks all of a sudden.
Luckily, his class had been cancelled and he knew that Caleb was usually around campus at this hour, though where would be another question altogether. He might even be with Ayden doing some happily married dreary stuff that Dawson did not wish to be a third wheel on. All he wanted was a bit of time with his boy before he was elbow deep in the old American Dream. Nope, Dawson did not envy him one bit at all. Dawson enjoyed his freedom and even though he had been on a date or two with the beautiful and amazing KC, he was not about to put a ring on her finger and settle down to a life he was far too young for yet, at least mentally, anyway. There was still so much that he wanted to do and it surprised him how different he was from Caleb now it seemed to be out there for the whole world to see. It didn’t bother Dawson too much and his bromance for Caleb was eternal, as they swore it would be after one long boy’s night on the town. It was just strange knowing that one of his best friends who was his age was married and convinced he had found the love of his life already.
He stepped outside into the warm sun and glanced around the courtyard. On a day like today he didn’t think Caleb would be shut indoors unless he was behind on his work and needed to pull some fast designer magic to make a deadline. That didn’t seem to be the case though and Dawson spotted his friend on a bench across the way by the fountain. At least now there was a chance for the boys to have a proper catch up and get up to some fun before Ayden down on Caleb’s free time and demanded that he conform to married life. What if they started hanging out with other married people and hosting dinner parties? The very idea made a shiver travel down Dawson’s spine as he approached his good friend “I see the old ball and chain has let you out for the day.”
Dawson teased as he took a seat next to his friend, the smirk already dancing on his lips. He was never going to let any of this go; it was perfect material for winding Caleb up! Caleb felt like he couldn’t remember a time when he wasn’t redoing the entire apartment. There was so much to be done still. It was starting to seem like they wouldn’t get the nursery finished. It was all he and Ayden thought about anymore. They went to school, work and then ran around their place baby proofing and redecorating. Cal didn’t get out too much anymore and he was feeling bad about that. There was barely enough time in the day to do anything now, he couldn’t imagine how much less time the couple would have once the baby was born. They were going to have their hands full.
The only reason Cal was even on Campus was because he had a project due and with all the mess from moving around at the apartment, his sewing machine and fabrics were hidden somewhere in the bedroom. He’d gotten to his class early just to find a note on the door saying it was cancelled. The same professor cancelled two classes the week before, too. The warm weather was turning his teacher into a teenager with the need to skip out on class. No matter, Caleb had designs he had to finish up and the day was really nice. He could work his creative magic out in the courtyard.
Cal grabbed a coffee from the cart before finding a bench and geting to work on a new design. He’d been trying out baby clothes for a while, seeing if he had a knack for it or if he should just stick to women’s clothes. But he had to hand this particular sketchbook in, so no side designs. He was still on the first one dress, erasing and redoing it three times when a familiar voice broke up his thoughts. Cal blinked once, looking up and over at Dawson. “Hey man! Don’t let Ayden hear you say that. She’s tiny but I’d put my money on her,” he said with a smirk. “And not because I’m married to her.”
Seeing Dawson came at a pretty good time. They didn’t have much time at work to catch up, so they couldn’t really get past the basics of hey how are you, school good, how’s that blonde you’ve been seeing. And they barely had time for that after the lights went down. He’d had a lot to tell his bro but just couldn’t find the time. And here the time was, falling onto the bench next to him. “How’s life?” he asked, closing his sketchbook. With Dawson around, he wasn’t about to get any work done. He sat back, took a swig of the coffee that was already cooling down.

Dawson loved the freedom that New York provided him with. Granted, he would probably still be able to live his own life back in Fairbanks, but it wasn’t quite the same in his mind with family looming all around him. Plus, he heard enough about the drama up there from his older brother. Levi’s youngest son was climbing the walls, his wife was convinced she was pregnant again and his mother was obviously playing the doting grandmother and constantly hinting about how much she would love a granddaughter. Dawson laughed at most of this, mainly because he wasn’t at home to take the brunt of it himself, but at least in New York he didn’t have his family finding out about his every movement, his every thought and decision. Even when he was out with KC, they didn’t have to know about it until he felt like dropping the pretty blonde into the conversation.
Still, he couldn’t imagine being in Caleb’s shoes right now. He was happy for his friend, but he thought he was barking mad at the same time. Marriage, planning for forever and promising eternal love?! Hell, Dawson had never even used the dreaded ‘L’ word in a romantic context and if he ever had to walk by Tiffany’s it was usually with a quickened pace and a shudder. He was nowhere near ready for settling down yet and he had once thought Caleb felt the same, despite his pining for Ayden like some lovesick pup. At least once Dawson sat down and thought it through, it made sense. Not to him, but for Caleb, though the ginger haired man was still not entirely ready to slap his friend on the back and start planning out family barbecues and vacations with him. “Please, you’ve been on her side for everything since the dawn of the millennium.”
He said, giving his friend a playful nudge. “And don’t forget that I’m like Spiderman; I can climb buildings. Your pretty little wife however, cannot.” He joked, leaning back and stretching his legs out before him. Grinning still, Dawson let out a long drawn groan as though he was bored, or thinking something over casually. “Life is good. Although, I’m not about to elope with my doll or doing anything else as crazy as you.” He teased. If Caleb thought that the congratulations Dawson had offered him when he told him about marrying Ayden was all Dawson was going to say on the matter, he was very much mistaken. This was going to be the banter Dawson would use for years, so long as Caleb didn’t try to set Ayden on him before then. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Caleb WORDS! 482! He knew when he told his friend that he was going to marry Ayden, he wouldn’t hear the end of it for a while yet. They’d be fifty, married with kids and maybe even grandkids and Dawson would still be cracking jokes about it. Caleb didn’t mind though, how could he when he got the girl? As much as he’d tried to keep his feelings a secret, the only one who didn’t know had been Ayden. But he’d always known Ayden would be in his life in some capacity. If it was still just as his friend, it would have been on him to get over his feelings and just be happy for her. But since it had turned out for the better, Caleb didn’t have to worry about that aspect. It was everything else now that seemed to be a problem and getting in the way. Ayden was pregnant, with twins, and then there was the whole surprise from his grandfather. They both still had school to finish and doctor’s appointments to get to. Caleb raised a brow. “I wasn’t aware I was that old,” he said sarcastically. “Get on her bad side and we’ll see. Should be easy the next little while,” he said hinting at the news he had yet to share with his best friend.
Caleb smirked, just waiting until Dawson fell just as hard as he had. His time would come and Cal would be there with his vocal cords warmed up and ready for the inevitable “I told you so”. “We have different ideas on crazy. I’m not about to race around the city using buildings as sidewalks,” Cal said, shaking his head. Cal had wanted to ask Dawson at work, after he’d had some time to think about how to ask the other man to be the godfather of his unborn twins. He had to figure out a way to tell him he was going to be a father first, and then as him. And it had to be soon since Ayden would be really starting to show at any time and the secret would be out. Cal didn’t want to be caught off guard like that, and wanted his friends to know before the cat was out of the bag. “So, want to do me a favour?” He asked, casually sipping at his near cold coffee. He needed to do something or he was just going to spit out his question, so he slipped his notebooks into his backpack, followed by the pencil case of coloured and sketch pencils.

Dawson knew that his friend was insanely happy and so long as things stayed that way, the red haired adrenaline junkie would be laughing right at his side. He knew that Caleb was head over heels, Shakespeare style in love with Ayden and he knew that their romance was something rarely seen in the world today, so making the most of it like they were was probably the right thing to do. Dawson wasn’t a romantic though, not in the conventional sense, and so ribbing his friend was always good for a laugh and he had a feeling that Caleb secretly loved being reminded of how sappy he was, even more so now that things had worked out with Ayden. “Please, if I was anything like a writer there would be phrases of entwined souls destined to be with each other throughout life and after life, and all of that sickening yackity yack yack.”
He wrinkled his nose and pulled a face. “Luckily for you, I’m not and so I can just keep introducing you as the guy who is best defined by the song Puppy Love.” Dawson pulled out a packet of gum and offered his friend a stick before popping a piece into his own mouth, chewing it around. “You screw up the laundry again? Have a run in with that blonde bit on the side?” The latter was a reference to a fight Caleb had told him about that had happened on the stairwell and that had brought Dawson to his knees with laughter. Caleb had to have been exaggerating about the girl, but like his marriage, Dawson used it all in friendly jokes and taunts. Shaking his head, Dawson flipped his friend off. “Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. It’s the best way of avoiding the New York crowds. I’m telling you, more people wish they had the parts to take the roof instead of the subway.” Now he was exaggerating, but it would still be an epic idea if it didn’t mean he would turn up everywhere with the need to shower not long after his arrival. “Besides, one of us needs to look this good.” More teasing and games…it was a surprise people actually took the red headed Alaskan seriously at all with his jokester personality. Sitting back and stretching out a bit, Dawson cast his gaze across the courtyard, simply expecting some silly shift swap question, but being Dawson, he had to turn it into something humorous. “We’ve been through this, with my lifestyle, I need to keep hold of both of my kidneys in case of an accident. My liver, however, you can have some of.” One day, Dawson would probably have to grow up and stop being so silly, but that day was long off.
