She said her goodbyes, breathing in the smell she associated with him and nearly broke down into tears when she heard the door shut. Last night had been a fantasy come true. Something she never admitted to wanting out loud. And now he’d barely shut the door and Fallon was completely lost. He said a week, but who knows if he really meant that or if he was just saying that so he could get out of there faster. She screwed up so bad. She kept her composure long enough to dig her phone out of her bag by the door. That hug felt so good though, she wanted to pull him tighter and give him a kiss goodbye. She honestly felt like she didn’t know if he would be back for anything longer than to pack his things. Okay, she knew he would be back, but bless her she didn’t care that she knew that. She wasn’t sure if the text she sent made any sense whatsoever so at the end she added an ‘SOS’, just in case.
Fallon felt lost, like everything in her life was spiralling out of control, and it was only Gabe leaving. She went back to her room; searching out the shorts she’d left…somewhere and her slippers that were kicked off in the heat of the moment. She headed straight back to the kitchen, working like a robot to clean up the mess that was left over and only managed to toss her plate into the sink before everything broke through and she was sliding down the cupboards to the floor in distress. What was she going to do?! She’d slept with her best friend and had acted like just another one of those stupid sluts he brought home with him. She wasn’t that girl, and acting like that was more for self-preservation than anything else.
She hadn’t wanted to break down in front of him. Seven years they were friends, and now they’ve what, ruined the great relationship they did have for one night that meant everything to Fallon but nothing to him? Because she’d been acting like that to hide her fear, and he hadn’t done a damn thing. He was the only constant in her life that could read her as easily as a book and he hadn’t seen anything. Or maybe he did and hadn’t felt the same so he didn’t say anything. Why did she have to go and ruin things with them? She was perfectly happy living a half-life. She blamed that stupid waitress. If she could have left it in her pants, she wouldn’t have come to the conclusion when she’d been alone that it was jealousy making her blood boil. Fallon still didn’t know how she’d kept those feelings so far from the forefront that even she hadn’t realized them. She felt a little like a fool and prayed Devon would be able to help her out. The two had met my happenstance and now, like Gabe and Myles, Fallon couldn’t see a world without the Police Officer in it.

These days, the only issues in Devon’s life were work related. Just last week a suspect had nearly knocked her out and despite the faded bruise her jaw still felt as bad as the day it had happened. It wasn’t that Devon’s life was relatively easy, but her primary focus these days was her career. She had put romance and most friendships on the back burner until she was where she wanted to be. Maybe it wasn’t healthy for her, but there was no one telling her that yet and she wasn’t worried. She just wanted to be able to help others and that was exactly what she was doing right now.
It had been a pretty long week of reports and patrols. She had covered shifts for colleagues, clocked in the overtime and pushed herself to be the best she could be, especially after the suspect almost got the drop on her. She hadn’t ached this much since her academy days, but everything must’ve just been catching up with her. She’d been in seven days on the row, but it was worth it all now that she had an earned a few days off.
She had planned on spending the whole day in her apartment, reading a good book, taking a hot bath and spending some quality ‘Devon’ time without any interruptions or jibes from the guys at work. The second she pulled her hair out of the tight bun at the end of each shift there were always jokes made about how feminine she looked the second the uniform was shed. She may have been career driven and focused, but she was still young and pretty much fresh out of college; something that didn’t go unnoticed once the professional atmosphere faded with the uniforms. However, the buzzing of her phone disturbed her from her book and her eyebrows furrowed as she read the message, her light eyes growing concerned as her mind went into overdrive. These days whenever someone text her in a panic her mind went to worst case scenarios. It wasn’t even about being a cop either; this had been happening since Frankie’s death, but her job didn’t exactly help keep her eyes and thoughts innocent. There were always shadows lurking in the sunniest of days.
She changed quickly out of her pyjamas and scraped her blonde hair back into a high knot. Her eyes fell on the box on her dresser and she chewed her lip. Logic told her that if Fallon’s situation was really dangerous then she wouldn’t be sending the cop a simple text message and for the first time in a long time she left her apartment without collecting her gun from the case, just checking on Atticus’ food and water bowls before locking up and heading down to the garage to her parked car.
The drive to Fallon’s was short, but it was long enough for Devon to be in a bit of a panic. Fallon was one of the few friends she was close to outside of the NYPD. Most of her old ones had lost interest when she stopped partying and hanging out so much. Her career hadn’t consumed her life just yet, but she knew that it was a very fine line she was treading along. Parking her car, Devon dug out the spare key to Fallon’s apartment and made her way inside, her impatience not allowing her to wait for the elevator. Taking to the stairs two at a time, Devon had to pause to remind herself that she wasn’t on duty right now and that there was a key allowing her access to her friend’s apartment and she wouldn’t have to kick the door down. “Fall?”
She poked her head around the door and then slipped inside, her sapphire eyes scanning the apartment before she saw the shadow in the kitchen. Stepping further into her friend’s home, her eyes widened when she saw the state she was in. “What the hell happened? Are you okay?” Dropping to the floor in front of her fellow blonde, Devon reached out for her, resting her small hand on her friend’s arm, worried about what on earth would send Fallon into this state. Fallon had let the bottled up emotions get the better of her and now she was in a limbo of sorts. Flashes of memories from the night before and the seven years before kept racing past her closed eyes and she just felt her heart breaking more and more. Maybe it had been more obvious than Fal had initially thought. Maybe everyone knew, or maybe she was thinking that because she was losing her mind. She didn’t want Gabe to leave; she needed him in her life to keep her from doing stupid things. Maybe it was selfish to want him around, to talk to and to keep her company when she was lonely. Hell, he’d been gone a total of twenty minutes and already she knew the next week would literally be hell on Earth. Fallon never realized how much she looked forward to seeing Gabe, talking absolute nonsense with him, and when they couldn’t hang out, those ridiculous text conversations they had.
He’d been her best friend for seven years. Gabe had been there through everything since freshman year. How could she be so stupid to ruin it all? She didn’t hear a knock, but that didn’t mean anything, Devon had a key. She was as close to a sister as Fallon had, and she trusted the other blonde with her life. They hadn’t been friends for long, having only met shortly after Fallon landed in New York, but they grew close fast. Funny, thinking about it now, not once did she ever think of Gabe being so close he was practically her brother. Myles and the rest of the Fraternity brothers, yeah, but never Gabe. There were subtle hints throughout the seven years’ worth of memories but she had been blind to them, too. She looked up at the sound of her friend’s voice, automatically running her hands over her face. Her eyes widened, she was so distraught she hadn’t even been aware there were tears pouring down her face! What the hell was she coming to? She never cried, and here she was shedding tears over Gabe!
She was in quite the state. She sniffled running her arm over her face again, willing the waterworks to stop. Fallon shook her head, not sure if she opened her mouth, anything would come out. “Dev, I royally screwed up, I've ruined everything” she managed to get out in a whisper. She needed someone to knock some sense into her and Devon was the best person for the job! She needed help pulling herself together, and after that she would throw herself into work, keeping herself busy so she won’t think about anything that happened. “What am I going to do?” she asked, through hiccups.

Above all things, Devon was sensible. She always had been. Her parents raised her to think logically and to stay safe in the city. After Frankie’s death this was something that only grew stronger in the petite blonde. She thought her actions through, never drank until she lost control and always made sure that she knew exactly what she was doing in her life. It gave her the makings of a good detective, but the shield was still a stretch away though and for now she was content to work hard and keep those who she loved safe from any harm, be it physical, mental or emotional.
She had known Fallon since the professor moved to New York. It had been Devon’s home for her whole life and the two girls had hit it off right away and after a few guided tours and little tricks, the pair had become good friends. She tried not to burden Fallon with any of her own problems, but that didn’t mean that she would never help her friend if she needed her – like now. Devon was just far too convinced that she could handle everything alone sometimes, even though she knew that no one could take on the world solo. Seeing Fallon like this did not inspire her with much confidence and she wondered what on earth had happened to make the strong woman crumble like this. They were sitting on the kitchen floor for crying out loud and the only time Devon found that happened was if someone was upset or drunk and eating! With a sigh, her blue eyes softened and she looked at her older friend with a sad smile. She would do her best to fix whatever mess Fallon had gotten herself into, but it might not be so easy.
“What happened?”
She asked softly. She knew that her friend was in a messy state, it was obvious with just one look, but Devon would need details if she was going to help her fix whatever had gone wrong and make things better. She was a cop, not a miracle worker, after all. “Whatever it is, I’m sure it’s not as bad as it seems right now. I’m sure we can fix it.” Devon was quite the realist, but she did have moments of bubbly optimism that pushed her forward and made her more determined to do whatever it took to solve whatever problem lay before her. Trevor had raised Fallon better than this, so why was she crying over something she should have just tackled and fixed. She knew why, but saying because it was Gabe, out loud was a little too much to bear right then and there. She knew she was going to have to get over that, she had to tell Devon and get some outside perspective on the situation. “There’s no fixing this, Dev,” she said sighing, wiping away the remainder of the waterworks. She had started it all, jumping into his lap, pushing him back against the couch cushions and ravaging him. She should have rolled off his lap and off the couch, maybe even out of the living room when he pushed her away, but she’d stayed, broken hearted, where she was.
She would never forget the night they shared. It was burned into her memories for the rest of her life. She could live to be a hundred and still remember every single detail on that night. She hadn’t been able to get enough of him, of touching him, kissing him, wrapped up in him so fully. She could replay every touch from the night before and still remember how wonderfully right it felt to be with him. Maybe if she’d just said she was scared, nervous, absolutely freaking out things would have gone differently. But she’d needed to hide behind some false face to think through what had happened between them. She hadn’t wanted to admit that every time she heard about another girl that would ultimately break his heart, she was jealous. She hadn’t realized until she woke up this morning how much she wanted to be with him. She had wanted to be curled up into his side, running her hands across his chest, through his hair more than she’d ever thought. And she couldn’t mention that to him. She didn’t know what she’d wanted from him when they woke up, but acting detached wasn’t it.
Fallon let out a bark of a laugh, shaking her head. She felt like there was no fixing this. “I slept with him, Dev. I slept with Gabe,” she said, blurting it out nice and fast. Of the two of them, Devon was the one with her head on straight. She was sensible, she didn’t run around throwing her heart at her best friend and then pretending it was nothing because she was scared of what would happen next. The girl was the bravest Fallon had ever met. Fallon envied her that strength; especially now that she was feeling so confused and weak. She felt like this time, her heart wouldn’t be mending at all, like it would just stay broken because it was Gabe. “And now he’s gone. I'm no better than those cheap skanks he brings home,” she said wrapping her arms around her knees and dropping her head to them.

Devon’s only serious relationship had been with Nathan back in her Stanford days. If life had dealt her a different hand she might’ve still very well have been with him, but there was never any point in dwelling on “what if” scenarios. She had made her decision and put her career and determination to find justice for Frankie above her own love life and she didn’t regret it, even though she had truly loved the man who had vowed to give her the world. He had pleaded with her to stay, but she knew he wouldn’t have been able to handle her cop life; she saw his face when he laid eyes on the gun, and it wasn’t fair to put him through something she would never give up for anyone.
She was only strong because she had to be. Frankie’s death had destroyed the Walker family and Devon refused to let it all end that way. Her parents were stuck in a cycle of grief and her little sister was growing reckless. Without closure, they were haunted by the loss of their son and brother and Devon felt as though she had to be the glue to keep them together. She was driven by that motive and if she looked back on her twenties one day, she wouldn’t regret sacrificing love for them so that they could move on, hopefully, one day. Still, that sort of thinking was what she kept to herself, knowing that everyone would lecture her about “living her life” if they discovered just how focused she was and her reasons for it. “Things probably aren’t as bad as you think. You just need to take a deep breath, calm down and we can sort whatever this is out.”
Devon was the kind of girl who didn’t stop until she found a solution to a problem and that was the same attitude she had when she walked through the door of her friend’s apartment and found her in such an emotional state. She couldn’t recall ever seeing Fallon like this; the professor always seemed so collected and put together. Her eyebrows furrowed together and she paused for a moment. The name sounded familiar to her, but why? Slowly it began to fall into place. “The guy who lives with Myles? The one from UCLA?” She was on friendly terms with Myles since he was with the CSI team and they had bumped shoulders at a handful of crime scenes in the past. The man was quite the flirt, but Devon wasn’t interested in anything more than a professional friendship from him. “Okay, sex isn’t the end of the world, sweetie. I’m sure this’ll work out and you are nothing like half of the skanks walking around the city. Call yourself that again and I’m handcuffing you to something.” She said, pulling her thoughts together so that she might help her friend. Letting out a small sigh, Devon fell into a comfier position on the floor and smiled at Fallon. “When you say ‘he’s gone’ what do you mean? Like, he got up before the sun? Or did he just leave because he had errands to run?” If he had played her friend, Myles could be sure that he’d be passing a message on when Devon saw him next. No guy got to treat a girl like some toy for their own entertainment and she was not above kicking him in between the legs if necessary. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Alright, Devon was right. She was overreacting and causing this all to be a hell of a lot worse than it was. Except, it really did seem that huge and hopeless because they slept together and now he was leaving for home again. She knew he said he would see her in a week, but God help her she didn’t believe him. It had been too awkward the morning after. And she’d closed herself off, too stunned at the realization of everything to form coherent thoughts around working through the events of the night before. She sighed, shaking her head. “You’re probably right. I definitely don’t need the annoying waterworks,” she said, doing the yoga breathing she’d learned. She was so confused about everything. Where did this bring them now? How would they get through this? What would happen to them now? She couldn’t lose Gabe, but she felt like he was already lost.
She nodded, knowing the two had met on the job a time or two. And with how much Gabe and Myles came up in conversation, it would have come up more than once, so it wasn’t a surprise Devon knew exactly who she was talking about. “That would be the one and only,” she said with a small smile. Her head said she was blowing this all out of proportion but her heart was still stuck in the “I have feelings for him and I think I just ruined it” stage. It was going to take a few minutes, or years to get her heart and her head to match up. “That’s comforting,” she said, teasing. “It wasn’t just sex, though. It was more than that, it was seven years of secret desires and I blew it by hiding away,” she said sighing. She kept replaying the morning before Devon showed up. She could see twenty different ways they could have gone about it, and none of them ended the way it really did.
“I mean gone as in back home. And not to the apartment he shares with Myles. I mean Lincoln, Nebraska,” she said shaking her head. Sighing, she stood and adjusted her twisted shirt. She needed to get her head together. But first she needed to find it. She had never been the ditzy blonde who fell over everything. Hell the last time she shed a single tear, it had been in anger not whatever the hell this was, guilt maybe? And back then it was only because she found her fiancé up against his desk. She’d been mad at herself for being a blind bat but Gabe had helped her through that. He was always there when she did something stupid and now she had done that something with him. The only ones left her Devon and Myles. But she couldn’t go to the playboy Pi Kappa Phi; Gabe would be talking to him. And although she appreciated the CSI’s advice and everything, he just wouldn’t understand the ridiculous “girl freak out” she was having.

Devon usually didn’t find herself crying either. She had a more compartmentalised way of dealing with her feelings and whatever life threw at her. When Frankie died, the only time she really cried was during his funeral; most of the time she had been in a numb state of shock. Even now when she visited his grave she only really let one tear fall, if that, before pulling herself back together and pushing on with her life. Her way of dealing with things was very different to most peoples, but she didn’t see anything wrong with that. One day, she knew that someone or something would crush her and all of her emotions would explode in some god awful outburst that she’d be embarrassed about for the rest of her days, regardless of the outcome. Smiling at Fallon, the blonde officer shook her head. “By all means, cry if you want, but just don’t let this all bury you.”
She said soothingly. Sometime a good cry could help, but Devon had never reached that point in her life yet. She knew that Fallon was close to the two men Devon heard so much about. Myles often spoke to her when their paths crossed and she was certain she had seen this Gabe around the usual bar when Myles had come in some nights looking to try and take home one of the new academy students. Guys like him were the reason Devon often avoided ‘real’ nights out on the town, but the CSI was a decent friend. Listening, Devon crossed her legs into the lotus position and propped her head up on her hand, elbow on her thigh. This was something right out of a soap opera and part of her wanted to laugh. She could understand why Fallon had fallen into such a panic, but at the same time, she was amused that it was something so small on the grand scheme of things. Devon hasn’t realised just how strong Fallon’s feelings were for Gabe. True, she didn’t know the man, but she thought she knew Fallon. If it wasn’t obvious to her then her friend had kept the truth buried really deep. “Oh, sweetie. I’m sure you didn’t blow it, but what happened?” She understood that her friend was in some state of shock, but Devon couldn’t help her if she didn’t give her more details about how it had become so messed up the morning after they had succumbed to their desires. Chewing on her lip, Devon tried to piece together the fragments of the story Fallon was revealing to her. “Surely he had it planned for a while, Fall. I mean, if he’s upping and moving home just because you slept together then…well, unless the plot of Teeth unfolded in your bedroom, it’s a little extreme.” She said, hoping that her friend would stop blaming herself like she seemed to be doing now. The way Fallon was reacting to this, she was either dwelling on the matter too much or she was seriously only just realising just how strong her emotions were for the man Devon didn’t recall meeting, despite how much she had heard about him. "When have you ever seen me cry in the time we've known each other?" she asked before answering the question herself. "Never. I hardly ever cry. And here I am, turning myself into a blubbering mess,” she said on a sigh, deciding right then and there that there would be no more tears shed over this. If he came back and there was nothing more between them then what they’d started with, well, Fallon would just have to get over that. But she knew she wouldn’t be able to. She’d opened up the dam on her feelings and now they weren’t planning on going away any time soon. It would put a serious strain on their relationship, and maybe it was selfish, but Fallon couldn’t live without Gabe in her life. How did she explain she’d been blind, she’d been jealous, something she’d honestly never been with anyone else. The blonde professor had never had a jealous streak but when it came to Gabe it was a mile wide and going. Fallon tossed her head back, looking up at the ceiling. She wasn’t sure how to begin but she figured it wouldn’t help to just sit there and stay quiet.
“Honestly, I don’t know how it happened. I’d been sitting over there,” she said waving her hand towards the living room. “Watching the movies on that list Trevor sends me. The next thing I know, Gabe’s knocking on my door and we’re talking about the skanks he brings home and, I’m never jealous Devon, never. But he sat there, asking me why the girls he brings home don’t want anything more from him than a shoulder, how I’m the only constant and then I’m sitting in his lap, kissing him and the next, he’s carrying upstairs.” She put her head in her hands, taking deep breaths. Every minute of that night kept replaying over and over in her head. “I was so shocked this morning; I kind of acted exactly like those skanks. Like it didn’t mean anything, when it was the total opposite. It meant so much, I still don’t know what the hell… you know?” she asked, looking up at the other blonde. She felt like this was all part of a plot to some College themed B-movie and she was the unpopular girl while Gabe was the unattainable “jock” in nerds clothing. Only this time, she wasn’t sure of the ending. Would that unattainable jock see more in the ostracized girl than anyone else and have a happy ending? Yesterday she would have said it wouldn’t have mattered because she was friends with that guy, now, she didn’t have a clue how this would all play out.
Fallon looked at Devon as if she had three heads. "I know Gabe. This wasn't as planned as he claimed. And what kind of movies do you watch, Dev? Teeth? Even I didn’t see that one!” she teased with a shudder. There had only been a few that she’d checked out on the list that she hadn’t gone near. That movie happened to be one of them. She thought of the pile currently taking up space on the table. It was clear she should really invest in Netflix or something. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d say he just made that up on the spot,” she shook her head. “Dev, I’m head over heels for him and never even realized it until some skank hit on him in front of me!” She blurted out a confession. Her eyes went wide as she realized it was the first time she'd admitted out loud her feelings for her very own Geek Charming. But there were dishes to be done and she had to shower and change into proper clothes. Basically anything where her mind was on other things than how strong her feelings were for her best friend. How did all those couples who started out as best friends and turned into more do it? How wasn’t it as awkward as this? She knew why, of course, it was all on her for that one.

“There’s always going to be something that breaks us, Fall. Sometimes things build up and we don’t even realise it until we’re a blubbering mess. In this case it’s clearly been your repressed feelings for Gabe.”
She was no psychologist, but Devon had learnt enough from her job and from her time at college. There was always some drama going on with her friends and Devon was usually the one who had to clean up their mess and make them see sense again before they made the biggest mistake of their lives, something she was convinced they would if they continued to act on impulse at every darn turn. Maybe it was the idea of youth and college freedom, but Devon was much more level headed when it came to this sort of thing and whilst she could understand why Fallon was freaking out, personally she found the direct approach much more effective, though Devon hadn’t been in a romantic drama scene in a long time now. Devon propped her head on her hand as she listened to Fallon’s account of the night before. She didn’t know this guy, but from what she had heard from the two friends she shared with him, he seemed like one of the good guys. Even now, Fallon wasn’t calling him names or screaming her hatred for him, so Devon had to remain unbiased towards the man she had, surprisingly, never met. “Sounds to me like there was more going on in your head than you realised. Weren’t you ever jealous back in college or with any of his past girlfriends?” She could understand blocking out emotions and hoping for the best, but Devon had seen just how overwhelming jealousy could be and it was damn difficult to block it out and ignore it, even when someone ignored everything else; even the obvious. “No one can blame you for freaking out, but seriously? You never thought to ask him about it or say something?” No wonder this mess had formed if they hadn’t spoken about it. If Fallon was like this then he had to be in some state too, she was sure of it. It all seemed a little like a teen novel, but Devon knew that life didn’t follow the generic plot lines or stories and right now she was a little at odds about what to tell her friend. If Devon found herself in Fallon’s shoes she would’ve confronting Gabe already and dealt with it the moment they were both awake and functioning. Not everyone functioned in that way though and she knew better than to force someone into doing that; it wasn’t everyone’s tactic. Chuckling softly, Devon pushed stray strands of her hair from her eyes and shrugged lightly. “I couldn’t sleep one night and it was the only thing on TV.” She had been working hard and it had pushed her to a restless night of nightmares and insomnia. When that happened, Devon curled up with Atticus, a blanket and whatever awful movie was on her television. “Fallon Flynn, you have got it bad for this guy.” She stated matter-of-factly with a small smirk. “He’s going come back from Lincoln, but if you don’t talk to him about last night then how long will it be before he finds a girl who isn’t a skank? How long can you act like it’s fine before that green monster reappears and turns this into something worse?” Devon asked quietly, hoping to make Fallon see that they would have to talk about it eventually, even if it didn’t result in a white wedding for them. The look she tossed her friend was seriously bland but Fallon understood where the other blonde was coming from. But she also didn’t know what to say to that when she hadn’t wanted to admit any feelings, repressed or otherwise at the moment. Fallon thought about college. She couldn’t remember every single day or night of the years she’d spent in college, but they were some of the best. And she couldn’t remember there being a ton of girls around with titles such as “girlfriend” for any of the boys. Hell, aside from the usual party goers, who ended up sleeping with half the frat, she was probably the only constant girl around that wasn’t interested in checking an entire Frat house off her bucket list. “There really weren’t any to be honest. The boys tried getting him some action, but that was the most that went on but I hated the girls that did walk out of his room the morning after,” she said on a sigh. She’d already started, may as well finish it out. “They all just used him. It didn’t matter that he wanted a relationship with them; they’d all just toss him aside when they got what they wanted. And the ones with boyfriends already just ran to him for a shoulder to cry on when they were having troubles with the idiots.” Using Gabe for a shoulder was something she’d done far too many times than she’d ever care to admit. “I confronted a couple of them once. I had been so mad by the time I was done with them, they were scared of the girl everyone called Tinkerbell. As if I couldn’t do damage or something but I always chalked that up to being a close friend and hating what I saw when they were through.” She chuckled.
She should have said something, she knew. But it had been just so overwhelming that she didn’t know what to say! There hadn’t been anything awkward about the night. In fact, to Fallon, it had been so right, so absolutely perfect she didn’t want it to end. But then the sun rose and she realized the enormity of what happened between them and it was just a lot to process in less than a blink of an eye. “I should have said something, I know that. I was just so shocked it all happened; I didn’t know where to start.” She shook her head, blinking away some left over waterworks threatening to spill over the dam again. After a second, Fallon just started giggling for no reason. “I have never said I knew what I was doing with guys. And now I’m even less sure of things. They always say we’re the mystery, but it’s them! They’re the ones who’re mysteries! When did life start getting all complicated? What happened to jump rope and chocolate milk? When the hell did boys stop having cooties, Dev?” she asked after the giggles subsided enough to speak coherently again.
Fallon made a face. “I’ll have to lend you anything in my collection. Seriously, you name it, I’ve probably got it here, and the chance of it still being in the plastic wrap is pretty good. At most they’ve only been watched once.” She barely had time to watch movies, despite the fact she was in love with film. She made sure to take a weekend to watch all the movies on the endless supply of lists Trevor sent her, and some of them she liked enough to actually buy. Unfortunately, she rarely got the chance to watch them again unless they seriously hit something in her and she just couldn’t live without watching it over again. Fallon could only nod her head in agreement. Now that the cat was out of the bag and her own eyes were opened to it all, she couldn’t deny it any longer. “Shit! He’s probably already on his way to the airport. He said a week. I’ll give him that. If he’s not back I’ll be taking my very first trip to Lincoln, Nebraska. And for the record, he found a girl who isn’t a skank thank you. I just happened to act like one for a bit of this morning,” she said, muttering the last part away from Devon.

Devon didn’t think she had been part of a chat about boys since the early days of Stanford. It was hardly something she had to deal with these days and since Fallon was pretty much the only girl friend in her life at the moment, it wasn’t as though people often came to her for advice. Even the guys at work never sought out her wisdom when they were fighting with their girlfriends; Devon was just one of the guys to them. This was one of the reasons why she found this whole kitchen floor drama somewhat amusing. It made a nice change from her usual problems of criminals, troublesome teenagers and pushing her own career forward. With a small sigh, Devon shook her head. She may not have been the most clued up person in New York when it came to matters of the heart, but she hoped she wasn’t as oblivious as Fallon clearly had been for all of these years. “Oh, sweetie, even best friends don’t do something like that if their feelings are purely platonic.”
She said softly, with a smile. “Still, girls like that needed to be knocked down a peg or two, so I’m not about to say any differently.” She folded her arms and settled into her seated position more fully. Her own love life had been relatively straightforward. There had been a few short and non-serious relationships in high school and then it was only really Nathan back in college who had truly captured her heart. She wasn’t exactly in the know when it came to guys, but she was thankful for the lack of drama. Letting out a small chuckle, Devon shook her head and raised her eyebrow at her friend. “I’m sure there’s a list of things that you should have done, but there’s no point in dwelling on that now. It’s over and what happened, happened.” She shrugged lightly and stretched out her feet. “If there is damage done then you need to plan how to fix it, rather than how you could’ve prevented it.” The law enforcing blonde couldn’t hold back the laughter at her friend’s statement and Devon needed a moment to pull herself together. It seemed like such a long time ago that boys were this disgusting idea. She counted her answers off on her fingers as she spoke. “Jump rope still happens down in the precinct gym, chocolate milk has a weekend home in my refrigerator and boys never had cooties to me, but that was because I had Frankie to scare most of them away before they got close enough for me to find them repulsive.” She answered, her smile still fixed on her glossed lips. Shaking her head, Devon waved her friend’s suggestion away with a flick of her hand. “I don’t really have the time for movies, Fall. I only had that one on because I couldn’t sleep. Devon was usually busy working out or improving what skills she wasn’t happy with in regards to her work. Her idea of relaxing was either chilling out at the bar with her colleagues for a few hours or spending a night in with a good book and a hot bath. Most of the time, Devon only enjoyed watching movies with friends around her to comment and laugh about whatever was on the screen. “Yeah, but while we both know that Fallon, does he? You said it yourself; you acted just like those girls you hate seeing him with.” She didn’t want to upset her friend any more, but Devon was the kind of girl who liked to look at everything from every angle and cover herself entirely. “And, if he does feel the same as you and last night was him opening his heart then, well, heartbreak can cloud a lot of truths. He might be doubting it all now and he might think you’re doing something similar to what those girls used to do to him. I know he should know you better than that, but love can twist everything and make it harder to see the bigger picture.” The more they spoke about it, the more Devon wanted to tell Fallon that she should go now and chase him down. However, her friend wasn’t in the right frame of mind to do that now and she didn’t want her advice to make any of this worse. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Fallon!
