Summery days always put Rory in a good mood. She loved the feeling of the summer sun on her skin and whilst she layered up on the sunblock to protect her porcelain skin, nothing quite beat it. The day she had left the hospital was a day like this and it was quite an amazing sensation to experience after months of being confined to that room and the bed for most of it. The bottle orange haired girl spent most of the morning outside before her lunchtime class started. She sat cross legged on the cobbles of the courtyard, listening to music that was probably too loud and scribbling in the journal she never went anywhere without. Her alexithymia made it hard for her to verbalise feelings or emotions and the journal helped her get them out before she grew frustrated and annoyed at the people around her; it wasn’t their fault they didn’t understand and she knew that.
The class was one on a subject she already knew quite a bit about. Physics was her forte and it was unusual for her to study a theory that was entirely new for her. She read the assigned module textbooks simply for fun and had most of them memorised or copied down into her own notebooks or assignments. It was the one thing that never let her down or didn’t understand her and it was what she found solace in when she found herself itching to work on something; sitting still drove her crazy after a while and Rory was overwhelmed with the need to do something. The end of the class also came with a new assignment project and Rory was probably the only one excited to get started on it.
The tiny girl made her way to the student lounge and took up her favourite table by the window. It was a little too distracting to work outside and she knew that, so a naturally lit table with the sunlight cascading through it would be her next and best way to get the best of the two things she wanted most right then. Plus, the library was too dreary to work in there! Next, she put her things in the compulsive manner she had to have them in to work well. The pens were lined up in the three colours, her notebook in the centre of the table and her textbooks stacked neatly on the left in order of size. To Rory, it was just the way she liked things to be, but it was another subtle hint to the AS she refused to use as an excuse for anything. Happily, she sat there, tucked up in her chair as she scribbled some notes down onto the paper with her left hand whilst the right toyed with her bright hair. The classes were letting up for the day and students were chatting around her, drinking coffee, discussing projects and sharing tales. It would probably only be a matter of time before someone sat at the slightly larger table that she was currently the only occupier of. Usually, when that happened, she just worked through it; people didn’t bother her too much and her headphones were only in her bag if she needed to lose herself in music to block them out.

Spencer was very glad the semester was almost over. He'd had enough of studying and worrying and cramming; he was ready for summer to kick in and bring back some form of relaxation. With summer came sunshine and trips to the Eastern coastline with his friends; it meant grilling out and enjoying freedom, and not having to even think about classes until August. Plus, with all the extra hours, he could devote more time to the sister he felt like he'd been neglecting lately. Between training and studying, his life had been stretched pretty thin, and he missed the red-headed girl he shared an apartment with.
He finished up his lecture, sighing at the new assignment that accompanied it before packing up his bags and heading towards the student lounge to eat lunch. he brought food with him most days, preferring his bag of chips from the corner store to the cafeteria food's junk. Plus, this way, he'd at least get to start on that project if he didn't run into anyone in the lounge. But, upon pushing through the doors, he couldn't hide a grin at the hair that could be spotted from a mile away. Spencer quietly came up behind her, fighting off a teasing smile at the studious way in which she was working. Reaching down to pinch her sides lightly, he said, "Hey there, Carrot. Working hard or hardly working?" He plopped down in the seat across from her, being very careful not to disturb her things as he set his bag down on the table top. He pulled out his laptop, the clips he needed to edit already set up in the program they were studying for class. He smirked across at Rory again, "So. How about Chinese and a couple horror movies tonight? I think we both need it before exams." Spencer clicked away at his keyboard, talking as he dragged and cut clips into sequence. There was a script he needed to write, too, at some point, but that required a heck of a lot more focus than this did; besides, he wanted to spend time with his baby sister and not have to worry about structure, point of view, or plot.
He turned from his laptop for a moment, digging his headphones and his "lunch" out of his backpack. Spencer plugged the earbuds into their spot, sticking one into his ear and ripping open the plastic bag. He shoved a couple chips into his mouth, offering some to Rory. "I've got another bag somewhere in there; take as many as you want," he said, getting back to work on his own project.

The end of year stresses never really got to Rory as much as they did other kids at the university. She was more than happy to read extra books on a topic she loved more than anything else. Physics had been her life since before it even mattered and figuring out how the universe worked only made her happier than she normally was. She didn’t even realise how much time passed by when her nose was buried in the textbooks and it wasn’t uncommon for Spencer to wake up for a glass of water in the middle of the night and find Rory curled up at her desk, eyes scanning the page at a ridiculous speed as she lost herself in her work. It was a good job that the redhead didn’t need all that much sleep to make it through each day or else she’d be one of those zombie students that you saw at the vendor each morning, downing cup after cup of strong coffee.
Rory hated when her brother snuck up on her like that, but she knew that he’d never stop it; Spencer got too much of a kick out it and there was a legitimate reason why she called him “Frazzle”; he either looked frazzled or he left her feeling that way. It was one of the emotions she could identify quickly enough and the scream that left her throat as he startled her was enough to remind her why she could identify it better than some of the rest. She gave him the glare that only a sister could muster and looked back down at her textbook, finishing the paragraph she was reading before addressing her brother again. “You ask me that all the time, but you know I’m going to say working hard.”
She said, with her usual smile dancing on her lips as she tucked her knees to her chest, reading the next two pages and half of the third while Spencer set his things up on the table. She was glad he didn’t knock any of her things out of the way, since it would mean she’d have to reorganise everything again to make her mind rest again. Her eyes lit up and she sat up straighter, grinning a toothy grin at her big brother. “Can we watch Phantom?” She asked eagerly. It might not conform to the normal horror genre, but Rory did have a slight obsession with anything remotely related to Phantom of the Opera and it had been a while since she had found the time to sit and watch her favourite movie. She was returning her attention back to the book, re-reading a theory she knew off by heart after doing an optional paper on it last month, when Spencer interrupted her reading again. She didn’t mind though, it wasn’t like she stressed out about exams or assignments and she often took some to work with her on the nights she was there. She found the sound booth an interesting place to be, but it wasn’t enough to keep her active mind quiet. Snatching up the bag, she leaned back and shrugged her shoulders at her brother. “What? You said to take as many as I want and I want the packet.” People couldn’t be literal around Rory unless they meant for her to act upon it. Spencer didn't get stressed easily, but there were a few triggers that sent him into his worrying mood. One of them, the main one, was anything involving Rory; the other was having too many things to do at once. He had a pretty good attention span, but, when he had so many other things to think about an occupy himself with, he tended to get distracted and blitz between tasks, leaving almost all of them unfinished or of poor quality. That was why he didn't do well with finals; so many exams, so many papers, and so many notes to study. Plus, there was work, and Rory, and his sports teams. One list alone he could've handled, but, combined, he found himself living off of sugary treats and energy drinks just to keep working.
He grinned innocently down at his baby sister, placing a loving kiss to the top of her red head before he took his seat. They were a quirky pair, alright, and he didn't mind admitting that to the world. He'd always be proud of Rory, no matter what she did, how rainbow-colored her hair got, or how many blunt questions she asked; she was his little sister, and would be until time ran out. "One day you'll answer the other way; that's why I keep asking," he said, returning her smile. Spencer was used to Rory's pet peeves by now, and he knew better than to touch her things unless explicitly told to. And, even then, he was careful to put everything back as close to as he'd found it; he hated upsetting her, especially when he felt guilty about pressing her very precise buttons. "Of course. I think its still in the player from the last hundred times we've watched it," he said jokingly, shaking his head at her request. Spencer didn't care what they watched, so long as they were doing it together. They hardly had enough brother-sister time lately, so he'd take whatever he could get. Besides, he usually let her pick anyways, and Phantom somehow always seemed to be her top choice.
Unless he was truly into a piece, Spencer didn't usually put his full attention towards editting. When it involved audio, then he gave it a bit more time, but, right now, all he had were silent clips used to prove he could work the program. Rory gave him something else to do and, if she wanted to work, he was figuring she'd snap at him to be quiet like any little sister would. "My fault, my fault," he said back, smiling at her again and pulling the extra bag out for himself. He ate as he worked, clipping video reels together and working through the few required elements the professor wanted in the final product. Well, at least he'd gotten a good start on this one.

Most of the time Rory couldn’t tell when he brother was stressed. It wasn’t that she didn’t care, but she just found herself spending so much time in her own world that little things like that slipped by her until Spencer snapped at something in her presence. Then, once she recognised that her brother was on the verge of pulling his hair out, she still didn’t understand why. She tried to help him out when she could, but he always seemed to act as though he had to take care of everything, even when Rory told him to stop fretting about the apartment, or chores or calling their mom. She was capable of a lot more than people thought, but she knew that Spencer already was aware of that; he just didn’t seem to like leaving her with all of the work.
Her lips twitched upwards from his tender kiss and she wiggled about in her seat until she found another comfortable position to sit in. She didn’t see the quirky image that the rest of the world saw when they looked at the brother-sister duo. It was simply the way they had always been, even before the accident that had left her close to death, and so Rory didn’t know any different. Spencer had always eased social situations when Rory got them ‘wrong’ and she was always there to keep him on their toes whenever there was a situation about to brew. She loved Spencer and honestly didn’t quite know where she would be without him, especially now that they lived away from their mom. Rory knew that she could survive with ease if she lived on her own, but she enjoyed his company too much to live away from him, especially when they were both in the same city and the same college. “I don’t think I ever will.”
She said after a moment of thought; there was always something for her to be doing! Sticking her tongue out at him, she flicked the page of her book over and grinned down at the text. “Well you don’t complain about it.” She said, reaching up to play with the necklace that she wore permanently around her neck. It was a symbol of Autism Awareness that her psychotherapist had given to her after she had finished her treatment and Rory loved it, plus, it was subtle, so she could wear it without people jumping in her face about it. Chuckling across at him, Rory tucked her legs up again and munched away on the snack stolen from her big brother. The textbook she was reading over only reminded her of the things she already knew. It was a little frustrating at times sitting through hours of classes going over something most of the kids were only learning for the first time when she could recite it almost as well as the professor. There was nothing she could do about that, but take up extra projects and assignments to stop herself from getting bored. Luckily, her professors understood Rory and knew that she needed more than the rest of the kids in her class. She enjoyed having debates with her professors during their office hours when she popped in to discuss something and they always had the time for her. “What Chinese menu are we ordering from?” One of Rory’s little quirks was that she had organised and alphabetised the menus in the kitchen drawer. She usually got the ones they wanted out so that she could put them back in their right place, but now it was proving a distraction to her until they had decided where they would order from. Spencer was used to being left to his own devices. He didn't need Rory worrying about him or fussing when he was in a foul mood; he was the older sibling, and that therefore made it his job to do with her. Actually, he kind of liked being left alone in that respect. Most of the time, he was very open with any questions his sister could come up with, but it was nice not to be interrogated about every single moment of his life.
He didn't devote nearly enough time to his sister as he thought he should. Back home, he'd spent a good portion of the day fretting, fussing, and petting Rory; though, they'd both been younger and the hospital drama didn't help much. Since they'd moved to New York, Spencer felt like they'd been pulling apart. Maybe it was their work loads between school and their jobs, or maybe they were just growing up; either way, he didn't know what to make of the lack of sibling time, and he wanted to bring it back.
Spencer smirked at Rory, shaking his head and answering in a mockingly-wise voice, "Never say never, Carrot. I might be right one day." He knew he'd catch her in it one day, even if he had to wait many years more for it. Besides, when he was right, he'd happily be able to throw this moment back in her face.
"I can't complain because you always get your way, anyways," he laughed back, clicking away at his laptop. Spencer didn't care what they watched or ate usually; he just nodded at whatever choice Rory chose, then pretended to be interested even if he really wasn't. He was guilty of "spoiling" her most days, but he was the only one suffering from it, so he never saw the harm. "We can order from all of them if you want. I just want my beef and broccoli," he said, shrugging the topic off and leaving it up to her.

Rory did worry about her brother sometimes. Normally, if he was still awake when she was only just going to bed, or if he seemed particularly out of sorts; that was when the alarm bells started ringing. The problem she had was finding a way to deal with that feeling. She could never be subtle, even when she tried to be. Everything she did was forward and to the point, which never helped when it came to trying to console someone or help them take their mind off what was bothering them so much.
She loved spending time with Spencer, even if they were just sitting and watching the movies they had seen so much that they could probably quote word for word without it even being on screen. They had always been close, but after her accident they had grown a lot closer. He had helped her sort herself out and got herself back on track so that she could go to college. They may have been on separate paths now, but they were still pretty close and Rory knew that no matter what happened, she would always want to keep that close relationship with Spencer. They seemed like very different people, but that sort of balanced them out and made their relationship work so well; at least, that was how Rory saw it.
Rory shook her head, refusing to believe what her brother was saying. “The possibility might be there, but think about it, Frazzle; when have you ever caught me hardly working? Do you think that day may ever exist?”
This was Rory’s sort of humour that she managed, but she did mean it slightly. Even when she was a kid she had to keep busy in some way or she grew frustrated and fidgety. She could enjoy a movie night with her brother, but she would be up and down making popcorn, getting them both drinks and playing with Rogue. She just needed to keep busy in some way and even when she was sick she was always trying to do something, despite Spencer’s fussing. Not looking impressed by the phrasing of his words. “You make it sound like I’m as spoilt as they are.” She pointed to a table of girls who clearly had more money that they had sense, judging by their designer outfits and the way they had been talking about their plans for the summer. Rory didn’t care if they overheard her or had anything to say about it; she never did. “The only point in ordering from all of them would be if you wanted to eat nothing but beef and broccoli for at least two weeks.” They did have quite the collection in the drawer, mainly because several came through with their mail each week and they kept making vows to try out whatever the new place was, but with so many arriving they would have to live off take-out to make it happen. Out of every person who he'd ever called a friend, Rory was definitely his best. She may've been his sister, too, and they may've bickered like siblings do growing up, but she was still Spencer's best friend. Maybe it was the tiny age different between them, or maybe it was just because he'd always been looking after her, but, either way, she would always be the one he put above the rest. Even their mother was behind Rory in Spencer's heart, and he doubted anyone would be able to ever change that. His sister would always be the redhead who needed him to come in and save her from her own mouth; she'd always be his little sister.
"One day, Rory, one day; just you wait and see. And, when that day comes, I will happily remind you of this moment and bask in the glory of being right," he grinned back at her, enjoying their bantering. They'd probably had this arguement a hundred times, and they'd both said the same things. It never got old though, and Spencer knew they'd most likely go through it again and again until said day finally occured.
He shook his head at her pointing before replying, "It's rude to point, Carrot. Besides, with me, you usually do get spoilt rotten." He smirked lovingly over at her, popping more chips into his mouth. "I meant you could order from whichever you'd like; I'd only need my favorite from one," he said, correcting himself. He often made the mistake of not being literal enough with his sister, but talking himself out of that place had become a sort of talent, even if the conversations usually took odd turns afterwards.

Rory had Aleximythia, which made it near to impossible to talk about her feelings or tell someone how much she cared about them. “I love you” was just a phrase she had been taught to use as a child for her mom and brother, but ask her to explain it and you would get one very frustrated and annoyed redhead on your hands. However, she knew that without Spencer, she wouldn’t be the girl she was. He meant more to her than anyone else in the world and she wished sometimes that she could tell him that, especially after one of their little fights that all siblings had. She didn’t want her brother to pack his things and move out because of something she had said or done. Rory might have been able to look after herself, but she wanted Spencer to stick around because he was so important to her. The little genius might not have been able to find the words to tell him all of that, but she did try to show it from time to time, whether it was simply getting their dinner one night or buying him a DVD or shirt that she knew he wanted when she had the money to spare.
“That all depends on if you remember this day when it happens.”
She said with a small shrug of her shoulders, her wrist coming to meet her teeth as she absentmindedly fell into her unbreakable bad habit. She had tried, therapists had tried, but the tiny bite marks on the side of her wrists came back without Rory even realising she was doing it. It didn’t hurt her and she didn’t do it deliberately; it was just her strange little soothing technique. “You’d also have to get the timing right; reminding me about this day a week after you catch me “hardly working” will not have your desired effect.” She added, slightly rambling her afterthought. Flicking her dark eyes across to her big brother, Rory shrugged again, not caring about the girls she had been talking about. “They probably revel in the attention. They might think you’ve just told me that you think they’re attractive.” She wrinkled her nose at the thought. She was close to Spencer, yes, and despite being pretty naïve herself, Rory did know what happened in the “real world” and she didn’t need to know when her brother strayed down that path for some girl. She nodded her head, understanding the point he had made in the first place. She didn’t like it when she didn’t pick up on it, but she was used to it by now. “Okay, then. Chinese and Phantom and…ice cream or popcorn?” She could pick some up on the way home then, ready for their night in. There would probably be more movies too, but she was more than happy to let Spencer pick the rest once she had her fix of masked men who lived under Opera Houses in France. Spencer didn't see himself leaving Rory any time soon. In his eyes, she'd always be the innocent little girl who needed him to rescue her from awkward conversations or pick her up because she'd gotten lost wandering the city. She could grow up and be as independent as she liked; he'd still be there, fussing over her. Truthfully, he didn't want to imagine the day where both of them were officially "adults." It'd happen eventually, he knew that, but he just couldn't picture them both with careers, families, or greying hairs; it was too odd. They'd been the sibling duo for so long that even the thought of not living together felt wrong. He was kind of afraid to find out what it'd be like.
Smirking again, Spencer reached into his bag and pulled out his ever-present camera, lining up the shot of Rory and clicking. "There. This day will be remembered forever; we'll even frame the picture so we don't forget," he said proudly, tucking the device back inside its pocket of his bag. There was always some sort of video or digital camera on him, even when he wasn't planning on using it. He never knew when something would catch his eye, so it was one of those things he couldn't afford to forget; even the simplest of things could spark an idea for a whole new project.
Sometimes, he couldn't help laughing at the things Rory could come up with. It wasn't in a mean way or a teasing manner; it was just too absurd or hilarious. He chuckled and answered, "Give 'em a break, Ror." He tapped away at his laptop again, hoping to finish this so he could enjoy the evening with his sister. It wouldn't do to get up at three and work on it again just to be exhausted tomorrow. "There should be microwave popcorn in the cupboard yet, and we can always pick up supplies for sundaes, if you're in the mood for those," he nodded. He didn't mind springing for the good stuff once in awhile, and tonight was one of those occasions where he could spare the money.

Rory loved spending time with Spencer and she liked knowing that he would be there if she needed him. She sometimes forgot herself and without him she’d probably have been left wandering the streets or stranded on the other side of the city after her thoughts allowed her to get carried away with one of her walks. The only thing she didn’t like was when he gave up something to come and be with her or pick her up from wherever she had landed herself. Spencer already did so much for her that she didn’t want him sacrificing his own social life or even his love life for her. It was the one thing that made her feel absolutely awful and when you can’t describe how awful you feel, then it becomes even worse of a feeling too.
Glaring across at Spencer, Rory shook her head and then flicked her attention back to the textbook she was really just perusing over now. “I hate when you do that.”
She stated, turning the page and bringing her knee up to her chest to rest her chin on it. “You have so many of those photographs that you’ll have to label that one specifically. And date it. It wouldn’t count otherwise if this fantasy day of yours ever arrives.” She told him lazily, her eyes still scanning the words on the page as her finger repeatedly traced the diagram scribbled in her notebook and resting on the desk. The only thing Rory carried with her everywhere was a pen and her journal. Sometimes something sparked and helped her explain something or she came up with a song or a line that could explain her feelings and she needed to write them down. She had survived with her journals since she had come out of her coma and now had a small box full in the bottom of her wardrobe. Looking up at her brother, Rory’s eyebrows were furrowed and her expression confused. “I never said anything bad about them.” At least, in her eyes, she hadn’t. A lot of the time she didn’t understand how her words could offend people and when they did, she didn’t understand what was so wrong about what she had said. Right now, she didn’t know who she was supposed to be offending, if anyone. She hated moments like this and just looked back down at something she could makes heads and tails of; science. The bright haired girl only looked up again when Spencer’s voice broke through her thoughts. “Only if you pick the toppings.” She said after a small nod. Rory had picked the movie, so she was going to make her brother pick something too, even if it was just to prove that she didn’t need to be spoilt and allowed to choose everything. Spencer was glad Rory needed him. Without her there, needing the "big brother" to keep her safe and sound, he wasn't sure what he'd be doing. He'd looked after her for so long; living without her would be boring and leave him a little lost. Sure, he was his own person and led his own life, but Rory was still a large part of it; she especially had been since high school. It was habit to shoot her a text every few hours just to check in, or offer to take her out to lunch after an exam on campus. He kept things organized for her, and made sure nothing was out of order when it came to their apartment. Little things, but they made the siblings unique.
He returned his sister's look, lips quirked in a smirk as their eyes met across the table top. "All part of my major. I thought you'd be used to it by now, sis," he said, completely serious. Spencer had to watch his use of sarcasm around her, though he did tie himself in knots when she was in one of her more literal moods. Rolling his eyes playfully, he pulled a camera cord out of his bag; it was another one of those things you needed to constantly have for editting clips or photos. Hooking the camera up and plugging it into the latop, he had the photo on his screen in seconds, dragged into a folder and properly named; a reminder for the day he could finally use it. "There. Named, organized, and saved; you'll never live this down, Carrot," he grinned happily, twisting the laptop around to show her the proof on the screen.
Spencer gave his sister the loving look that clearly said "drop it" and returned to his editting. He was used to Rory's quirky ways and the way she understood things, but others weren't, and he didn't want her suffering because of something she'd unknowingly said. It was just another thing he tried to protect her from, even if she'd rather learn from her own mistakes. "We can go to the store together, Rory," he chuckled playfully. He wouldn't protest about picking food, but he didn't mind what they were eating; as long as it was sugary and delicious, he would be happy.

Rory didn’t spend too much of her time dwelling on what the future might hold. After what had happened when she was sixteen, she didn’t see the point in planning or worrying about days that might never come. She might have a full bill of health now but it was no guarantee for her or Spencer, though it was hardly the most pleasant thing to think about. The only thing Rory didn’t want to happen was for Spencer to sacrifice his own happiness for hers. In a perfect world, he’d meet a girl who would understand their close sibling relationship and wouldn’t try to take Rory’s big brother away from her. She never thought of love for herself having never been on a date to begin with. The future she thought of most was Spencer’s and she didn’t want to be the one who ruined it.
Rolling her hazel eyes, Rory shook her head and repositioned herself in her seat, tangling herself in another curious knot. “I am, but it doesn’t mean that I’m ever going to like it.”
She stated. She didn’t mind photographs as such, but she grew frustrated whenever she saw that flash go off when she was least expecting it. The bright haired girl was pretty certain that if she looked through her brother’s laptop she would find photographs from all kinds of days and of her doing all kinds of activities from studying to washing the dishes. She would never understand his fascination with photographing everything, but she had stopped trying to already. In her mind, Spencer had just as many quirks as she did too. “Keep telling yourself that, Frazzle.” She said, barely glancing up at the screen, though her lips did twitch upwards into a smirk. She stuck her tongue out at him once he was back to his editing. Rory was naïve in so many ways and sometimes little things like that made her seem that little bit more childish. She never set out for everyone to like her and she didn’t care if someone told her that they hated her. Spencer kept his eye out for her though and was often around to step in before someone found a reason to slap the bright haired girl who honestly didn’t know any better most of the time. “You’re still picking them.” She said in a sing-song voice as she flicked the page in the textbook once more and set about memorising the words on it.
