Nix was not a fan of early mornings. He even took his classes in the afternoons where he could to avoid the silly grouchiness of ante-9am. However, this morning, it couldn’t be avoided. He had to be at the airport with Payton for their flight to Vegas. He was going home for his dad’s birthday and his mom had done everything but outright beg him to bring his girlfriend along. It had reached a point where he was expecting her to say “if you don’t bring Payton, then you can’t stay here”, it was getting that bad with every phone call she managed to cram into the short space of time before Nix had to book the flights and sort the time off from work. Luckily, Pay had agreed and now he was looking forward to showing her exactly why he loved the city he was more than proud to hail from.
Yawning, he stumbled to his bathroom and hopped into his shower, hitting the pipe when it made some unhealthy clunky noise. He dragged himself through his adapted morning routine, scowling uncharacteristically at his arm as he had to twist to force it through the sleeve of his t-shirt before putting the sling back on, wondering if there was a way to get it surgically attached to his flesh. His shoulder didn’t hurt anymore, but the nerve damage wasn’t going to go away as easily and his physiotherapy didn’t start until after he returned from Las Vegas. Still, it was a lot better and there were no bruises or cuts decorating his body now, which should reassure many; his girlfriend included.
Once he was ready, he threw one of his many caps on his head and grabbed a ‘breakfast’ of red vines from the kitchen. His suitcase was propped by the front door already and he was meeting the brunette twin at the airport, since he had been working late the night before. Driving was out of the question on account of several reasons so he hailed the first cab he saw, grinning at the driver before hopping in and throwing Payton a quick text to tell her that he was on his way at this ungodly hour of the morning. He had a hard time keeping awake in the taxi, but luckily he survived the drive to the airport with only one incident of drool dripping onto his hand. After stuffing some crumpled green paper through to the driver, he hauled his case from the car and tripped over the kerb, cursing loudly, before up righting himself, the case and his hat. Nix was supposed to be meeting her inside the entrance, but that was a rather vague rendezvous point. It was probably a good thing that he towered above most people thanks to genetics and his crop of white blonde hair wasn’t exactly common either. Still, Payton might not be there at all yet! He leaned against the wall and let go of the handle, leaving his luggage to rest beside him whilst he waited.

Payton hadn't been on a vacation in... forever. Not since before high school, at any rate. She was kind of nervous to travel without her sister, and it wasn't like they could afford luxury cruises every year. But, when Nix had offered her the chance, she'd taken it. It would've been impossible to say no, which she knew, plus it'd be fun to meet his family, even if they would probably be ten times worse than the preview she'd gotten a little while back. They'd also get to spend some time together without the bustle of New York interrupting, and she didn't want to let him go alone. He may have been healing nicely, but she was still nervous about him hurting himself again or getting attacked. Better to go with and be there than be stuck on the other side of the country if anything were to happen, right?
She was used to being awake at odd hours of the night/morning, so the early flight didn't bother her. She climbed out of bed, setting her disheveled room to rights before going to peep in on her sister. Payton had already said goodbye to her the evening before over some movies and last-minute packing, so she didn't bother to wake her twin as she continued on her morning routine. Shower, breakfast, check the bags again; she was ready. She poured some hot chocolate into a travel mug and shrugged into one of Nix's sweatshirts, then grabbed her suitcase and set off to hail a cab. If wouldn't have had a case, she would've taken the subway, but it was safer and a lot more convenient to take the taxi.
Payton's eyes were on the clock as morning traffic already began to clog the streets. She was a couple minutes late, but the text from her boyfriend reassured her that she would hopefully arrive only a few minutes after he did. Texting him back, she sipped her hot chocolate and tucked her electronics back into her purse as the car pulled up to the airport. She payed the driver and silently got out, lugging her bag behind her and looking towards the huge entrance way. Having never been there, it was a bit intimidating as she stared up at it, and she took a moment to remind herself that she had to find Nix; he'd make this a hell of a lot easier to go through.
She walked through the doors and began searching for the blonde head she knew by heart, smiling brightly as she saw him against the wall. Payton quickly made her way over to him and rolled her suitcase up next to his before giving him a sweet good-morning kiss. Pulling back, she smirked gently and set her mug down on her case so she could sign. "You look half dead. Sure the early flight is worth it?" she teased, pecking his cheek again before hugging his sweatshirt closer around herself and sipping at her cocoa again.

Las Vegas and New York might have both been cities, but to Nix that was where their similarities ended. Las Vegas was home and New York was just a place he lived. Going back to the desert was more than just a visit to him and it was more important than anything a typical vacation had to offer. It was where he could remember who he was beyond the college life, and now he got to show all of that to Payton. She would be able to see the barrage of photographs documenting the lives of the four brothers and would probably get told endless tales about their crazy adventures that happened when they were younger or when they were reunited. Even Pay wouldn’t have been able to calm the brothers down, but Phoenix’s lame arm might just do the trick to stop them from climbing rocks or driving the bikes out in the surrounding desert.
He wasn’t looking forward to the fussing and commotion that would befall him the second he stepped through the doorway of the cluttered family home. He was going to be the last one to arrive at the McKenzie household which meant there would be more hugs, kisses and slaps on the back to greet him than the lanky blonde actually wanted. However, they couldn’t do anything about that. There had been too much going on in New York to fly out any earlier than they already were and the last conversation with his ma suggested that his arrival with Pay was going to be when the wacky family drama kicked off and the loud, crazy antics would unfold without a second of warning. Luckily, Pay wouldn’t be the only girl there and his twin’s girlfriend and Derek’s fiancé were sweethearts who would totally save the brunette from being driven insane by the reunited brothers.
Flying to Vegas was a luxury Nix didn’t really go for. Normally, he’d make a road trip out of it, but his injury had meant that his car had remained stationed in the apartment garage since before the night he had been attacked. It was an inconvenience to say the least, but Nix had hardly ever been punctual to begin with so folk weren’t surprised when he was even later now. At least it would only be a temporary problem, even if it was annoying all around. Seeing Pay just reminded him of the journey they had ahead of them and how exhausted he really was. “It’s never worth it, but ma will go mad if we’re not there by dinner.”
He picked her up with his good arm and clung to her as though she was a human sized teddy bear, refusing to put her down for a few long moments until his arm ached. “Let’s get this over with.” He grumbled, grabbing his case to roll along to the check in desk, his eyes half closed as he nearly walked into a rather hectic family trying to rush around for their own flight. Payton was just a little nervous about meeting his entire family. She'd heard stories when Derek and Mrs McKenzie were in town, but now she would be in their territory, and it was terrifying. In New York, at least, she had the escape of her own apartment when things got overwhelming or too much to handle, but, in Vegas, she wouldn't have that luxury. The Big Apple was filled to the brim with hideaways, but the only place she'd have while gone was Nix's side, and she had a feeling he'd be off with his brothers for a good amount of time. Maybe Mrs McKenzie would be less attentive with so many kids around; well, she was hoping for it, anyway.
She was excited that Nix was introducing her to his family, even if the deep-rooted fear was spoiling the feeling. It was a big step to be meeting all his brothers and his parents, and she planned on trying to make the best impression possible. With so many new faces, it'd take her a bit to be able to talk with everyone, but she had her iPad tucked into her bag so that it was handy for when they landed in Vegas. She had no idea what was going to be greeting them when the arrived, and she wanted to be prepared. It was going to be a challenge to keep all of the names straight since she'd never had a large family, but she was looking forward to it. Payton was just happy Nix thought her good enough to show off to his brothers.
She wrapped an arm carefully around him as he picked her up, being more than used to it by now. They'd been finding creative ways to work around his shoulder lately, so now it didn't take too much thought for her to avoid bumping his shoulder. Giving him a warm smile, she pulled away to sign, "I'll be your pillow on the plane; then you can sleep all you want." Pay grabbed her own case, following after him and sipping on the last of her hot chocolate. It had been a long time since she'd been in an airport; years, in fact. There had been once when she'd been sick, but she didn't remember more than snippets of that since she hadn't been coherent for most of it.
Payton reached out an arm to stop him as he almost trampled a family, but she couldn't hide a small giggle as she looked up at his sleeping face. Balancing her mug under her arm, she quickly signed, "Wake up? You're gonna hurt yourself more, and we can't afford a trip to the hospital today. Your mom will kill both of us." She reached up to kiss him again, a smirk playing on her lips as she rolled her case up to the desk. Her eyes stayed on the lady's lips as she spoke, but Pay couldn't understand more than a few familiar words. She looked towards Nix, shaking her head a bit and stepping back so he could talk, even if he was half-asleep. At least he'd be able to talk and wouldn't hold up the line of people already forming behind them.

Families like Nix’s were the kind you saw often in comedy movies that usually had Ben Stiller in some ridiculous leading role. They were loud and probably spent more time yelling at each other about anything and everything when they weren’t teasing each other or chasing one another about their Nevada home like they were still a bunch of kids who didn’t know any better. It was surprising that people hadn’t questioned their values yet or anything else. It was hard to imagine that they all loved each other and were there for one another the very second that they needed it. They were close and it was hard for Nix to think about any time when there was a falling out that had threatened that strong relationship between them all. Even the move to New York had seemed extreme, even to him, but he had been encouraged to chase his crazy dreams from a young age and nothing was going to stop him. Plus, once he was settled he was forever getting Skype calls from Nathan or silly e-mails full of jokes from Derek, and Robert never mixed a week without informing him of any Vegas gossip he might have been interested in.
Still, he was not pleased with the early morning travel or the welcome party they seemed to be setting up. The girls were excited that there was another “better half” coming to town and couldn’t wait to meet Payton apparently and rescue her from the crazy that was the McKenzie reunion. It wasn’t even like they’d all be around a TV, yelling at the football either; the boys would be wrestling in the dusty yard or daring each other to foolish stunts as though they were still a bunch of energetic teenagers with something to prove. Nix just hoped that it wouldn’t frighten Payton off too much. His family did not do subtle and they did not do quiet; they were loud and brash and made it very clear from the start what they wanted.
Groaning again, the unusually toned down Nix shook his head and fixed the cap that covered his white blonde hair. “If I sleep, I may not come to until December twenty first and that’ll only be to move to the apocalypse ready bunker.”
He said, surprisingly coherently given his exhausted mood. A guy who blew through as much energy as Nix did on a daily basis needed his sleep to keep up such a lifestyle and he had fallen a few hours short last night, staying up later than he would’ve done to make sure his packing was complete; something made slightly more difficult by the condition and useless state of one of his arms. He blinked, hoping it would wake him up a little more. He needed sugar and coffee, but he could grab that once they were checked in and waiting for their call to the gate. “People should be looking out for me. I’m an arm short.” He said, approaching the desk and pulling the tickets out from his carry on and sliding everything necessary to the woman on the other side, tediously answering the routine questions that reminded him why this part of going home was just so boring. “And with my family there will be at least one hospital trip during this visit.” He warned her. Last time, Nathan had cut his arm on the fence and needed stitches and the time before that an out of hand obstacle course had fractured Robert’s hand. Once the woman at the desk had dealt with them he grabbed his things and guided Payton out of the line and towards where she had told them to go, which conveniently was towards a coffee shop. Finding a place in the family Nix so loved was going to be Payton's mission for this trip. Even if she was a lot quieter than what any of the McKenzies were used to, she wanted them to like her. Nix apparently saw something in her that kept him coming back, and she hoped his family would see that same spark and welcome her into the brood. His mother appeared to like her, and Derek had been joking with her by the end of his visit, so at least she'd made some progress with them; now came the test of everyone at once. Apparently, there would be a couple other girls out there, so maybe she could shop or do other "girly" activities with them. Her and Paige had their sister days, so Pay was hoping they'd be along the lines of those. That way, she'd at least have a chance of not freaking out and offending these other honorary McKenzies.
While she was more awake than Nix, Payton was going to let him do the talking. She could pull out her iPad and use that to communicate with these strangers, which was now her usual way of talking even when her boyfriend or sister were around, but she wasn't in the mood for the stares and questioning looks this morning. From years of it, she'd been able to grow a thick skin, yet that didn't mean she was invincible. Plus, with Nix already being hurt and in a sling, she'd rather not get him more gawks for being with the freaky deaf girl.
Payton walked along next to him, watching his lips out of the corner of her eye. She'd gotten good at reading his lips, especially since their signing lessons were temporarily being put on hold. There were still a few misunderstandings on occasion, ones that usually frustrated Pay and made her turn angrily to the iPad, but they were getting few and far between these days. It was still early today though, and, even if she was coherent, she took a long moment to fit together his reply. She'd missed a word or two, but she managed to guess, tucking her mug under her arm to sign, "I'll be your arm if you'll be my voice." She reached up to place a loving peck to his cheek as the lady pounded away at the computer. Pay's eyebrows furrowed at his next sentence, her mind already spinning with ways either of them could end up in the hospital again. They'd both spent enough time there and, frankly, she hated them, no matter what her reason for being there. "You've been in the there plenty lately," she signed with a worried shake of her head. If there was one thing that could ruin this little trip, it was him landing in a stuffy hospital bed again.

Since Payton has already met his mom and eldest brother, Nix was hoping that the McKenzie home wouldn’t be so intimidating to her. At least she had his mom already in love with her and that was usually the worst thing about the boys bringing their girlfriends home; they got grilled by the family matriarch until she was satisfied that they were good enough for her sons. Payton already had that out of the way, so she should be able to just get to know the rest of his siblings, their better halves and their father, who would probably spend most of the trip either fixing the plumbing or sitting in front of the TV watching the game. Aside from being pretty crazy most of the time, it was a very welcoming place to be, once you got used to the everyday chaos of the family who lived there.
Nix was oblivious to anyone who ever stared at him funny. His whole life he had been thrown strange looks simply because of how hyperactive and eccentric he could be most of the time. He hadn’t noticed back then and he didn’t notice now when people were staring at his sling or gawking at him for announcing that he only had one arm. Everyone could see that there were two, but unlike some people who had to temporarily wear a sling similar to his, he couldn’t move one of them at all, thanks to the nerve damage the physiotherapy was nowhere close to repairing yet.
He still felt exhausted though, but once there was a bit more caffeine and sugar in his system he’d be back to his usual self and would probably spend most of the flight bouncing around, irritating Payton and everyone else around them for the duration of the flight. Pausing to think for a moment, Nix looked down at his girlfriend with a question in his light eyes. “That sounds like something out of a weird Phantom of the Opera.”
He declared, a little on the random side of his usual thoughts. Chuckling softly, he bent down to kiss her cheek before the woman finished checking them onto the flight, taking their luggage from them and freeing Nix’s good arm once more. “Ha, you haven’t even seen the size of my medical records.” He was forever getting bumped and cut when he was younger and there were several trips to hospital after cracking his head on desert rocks, cutting his legs when climbing fences. This last incident might have been the most time he had spent in hospital, but it certainly was not the first. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED!Payton! WORDS! 471 OUTFIT! Payton was, by now, more than used to Nix's random thoughts. It took her a minute to catch up sometimes, but she kept with him, nonetheless. The surprise twists often left her dazed as she translated, making herself believe that she couldn't have understood correctly. Usually, though, what she picked up was right, and it was where his head had gone in less than an entire second. She didn't mind, and actually enjoyed the surprising ideas and connections he could come up with; they were new, different, and interesting. Since graduating high school, he'd been the only person to really get her thinking outside the box. Work made her move and pay attention, especially in the beginning, but it became mindless after a couple years of doing it. Nix's dramatic turns forced her into focusing to be able to keep up, and she oftened ended up trying to figure out how he'd come up with the new topic in the first place.
There were already plenty of toys in her bag for the flight. Her iPad, for one, and her phone. She had a folder for work filled with dates to check and programs to edit, along with her laptop and the brochure for NYU that she'd had Paige pick up the other day. It was just to look at if she got bored; to see what caught her eye and could possibly entice her to waste four years of her life slaving away again at school. Payton had a feeling her iPad would be getting turned over to Nix while she got her work finished, but she wouldn't mind; she had her phone if he killed the battery on the thing.
Payton playfully rolled her eyes at her boyfriend, accepting the kiss as the woman finished checking them in. She handed over her suitcase, and headed off towards the closest coffee vender, knowing that was the first place they needed to stop if Nix was to be awake soon. "Go get your coffee before you pass out on me," she signed with a smirk, finding a seat on a bench near the cart. Pay set her bag down next to her and pulled out her iPad, clicking away at the screen as she went through some of her emails for work from the evening before. Her not being there had freaked the hell out of her boss, seeing as she usually kept an eye on the security cameras and office while the shows went on. Sure enough, she had a list of new emails from him, the final one wishing her a fun holiday. Well, at least he'd been kind enough to do that.

At least once the checking in was done they had some time to relax before they had to board their flight to Vegas. There would be plenty of time for Nix to wake up with the aid of caffeine and sugar, though Payton should be a little concerned about the moment he hit that usual hyper state he was commonly known for. He would be bouncing uncontrollably off the walls if he wasn’t careful. “I don’t think I’d pass out on you.”
He said with a big and loud yawn, as though that would help him make his point. Nevertheless, he dug out his wallet and moved to the cart, buying himself the biggest cup of the strongest thing they sold and then grabbing some doughnuts, a cinnamon bun and a bag of gummy bears, just to keep him going throughout the morning and throughout this darn flight. Moving back to the bench where his girlfriend sat, Nix offered her one of the doughnuts from the bag as he bit into the cinnamon roll, balancing the gummy bears inside of his sling as he also gulped down some of the hot coffee, not caring that it was still really hot and burnt his tongue slightly. The heat alone woke him up slightly, but it would take another cup or two to get him to his usual state and luckily there should be just enough time for that and for him to finish the food in his arms. He pretty much had a black hole for a stomach, but to stare at him, no one would think that. It wasn’t even like he went to the gym either; he simply had a fast lifestyle that he was usually ahead of keeping up with. He kept listening out for anything over the speaker that was related to their flight, but there was nothing said or updated on the screens around the area where they were sitting either. So, he made his way through the first mug of coffee, his cinnamon bun and one of the doughnuts in what seemed like a record time before tossing the empty container into the bin and nudging Payton to get her attention. “Do you want anything? I’m going to grab another cup.” He was feeling a lot more awake now, but there was still definitely one more mug to go before he was his usual self again. Payton was very ready to be in Vegas already. Airports were so busy and full of people, even this early in the morning, and she didn't like the uncomfortable bench she was currently curled up on. At least the plane seats would be easier to relax in, and then they'd have a bit of privacy. Nix would not doubt be keeping her awake and alert the entire flight, especially with all the messages they sent over the intercom system, but the padded seats had to be better than the hard bench.
She just shook her head at him as he yawned in return, looking back to her iPad and sorting through her things for work. If she got it done now, it meant less time spent holed up in whatever room she got at the McKenzie's. Payton knew Nix wouldn't let that happen, no matter how much work she had, so she hoped she could finish it all before he caught sight of her. They were supposed to be getting away from New York, after all, not lugging it along with them.
Payton looked up with a smile on her face as he came back, ripping one of the doughnuts in half and tossing the rest back into the bag before nibbling away at the piece she kept. She trusted him to keep an eye and ear out for any signs related to their flight, though she did glance up at the board every once and awhile just to double-check. Her attention went to him instantly when he nudged her, and she shook her head, bringing up her notepad and typing, "You're done already?" She gave him a surprised look, amazed that he'd already downed one cup and what food he'd bought. He really was out of it this morning if he was tearing through food like a bear! She handed over her mug and added, "Have them fill it with hot chocolate. I'll pay." Payton reached for her wallet, digging it out of her purse and pulling out a ten. She held it up to him, a happy smile on her face.

The flight to Vegas was an uneventful as always. There were no Mega-sharks jumping from the ocean and chomping down half the plane like it was brunch, no epic superhero moment where the world got saved by Superman. It was exceedingly ordinary and now that Nix was back to his usual hyperactive self, he was bored and cramped and getting fidgety. He didn’t like this at all, usually preferring to make a road trip out of going home but since he wasn’t driving he had to settle for this with his knees pressed up so tight against the seat in front of him that he was certain there would be visible bruises once he took his jeans off later.
As the plane landed, Nix was probably the first to undo the seatbelt once the wheels hit the runway. He wanted to get out there, off this plane and remember what it was like to breathe air that hadn’t been recycled over the hours they had been in the air for. At least when he took the car he was free to take breaks, sing loudly and do pretty much whatever took his fancy whilst he was on the road.
He waited for Payton at the bottom of the steps and took her hand in his good one, joining the crowd as they went to retrieve their luggage from the belt. He didn’t know which of the McKenzie brood would be picking them up, but he fired off a quick text to them all anyway as they waited for the suitcases to appear, letting them know that they were in Vegas now. He dropped a sweet kiss to Payton’s forehead before spying their luggage and moving to grab both cases, swinging them over with ease and grinning at his girlfriend. “Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas, and remember; what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”
He wiggled his eyebrows suggestively and then led her towards the airport exit, grinning and laughing like a hyena when he saw who was picking them up. In front of them, leaning by the wall was his clone, Nathan. The pair were entirely identical. They had the same fashion sense, white blonde hair and even their nose rings matched. It had been a fun game when they were teenagers to see who could tell the two crazy kids apart, but now it was just funny to see how alike they really were. It wasn’t like Paige and Payton where one was blonde and the other dark; there really were no apparent ways to tell the youngest McKenzie boys apart, unless you got them to strip, in which case someone would notice that Nathan had a small birthmark just above his coccyx while Phoenix did not. He walked over, grabbing his older brother by fifteen minutes, picking him up and shaking him about like he was a knotted puppet. “Hey, Nixxy!” Nathan slapped his brother on the back and then turned to look at Payton. “You must be Payton. It’s good to meet you.” Nix laughed at his brother’s politeness and winked at his girlfriend. “Alright, let’s hightail out of here before someone remembers who we are and what happened to that vendor six years ago.” He wheeled his suitcase outside and to his brother’s parked car, popping the trunk to throw everything inside before he held the backdoor open for Payton, sliding in beside her in case she needed him for anything. For Payton, the flight was actually very productive. She kept busy on her laptop and iPad, taking use of the free wi fi to email her boss and her sister, letting them both know that she'd gotten off safely. Between emails and working, she watched Nix, smirking as she saw the coffee and sugar slowly making its way through his system. She chatted with him, surrendered her iPad so he could play whatever games were on there, and curled up next to him for a bit of a nap after she finished her file up. The nerves prevented more than a twenty minute nap, but it was enough to keep her smiling and able to chase after her boyfriend the moment they landed.
She packed up her things and made her way off the plane, shaking her head as Nix raced off into the fresh air. Pay slung her bag over her shoulder, lacing her hand through his and smiling excitedly as they made their way towards the luggage. The new surroundings made her a bit nervous, but she just trotted after him, taking in the sights of the strange airport. Hopefully, Nix would know where they were going and wouldn't get them too lost; hopefully. She grinned up at him when he kissed her forehead, bumping her shoulder playfully into his good side before going and grabbing her case from him so they could find a way out of the bustling luggage area. Her eyes flickered to his face long enough to catch his words, her cheeks blushing pink at the way his eyebrows moved and the look in his eyes. Even if she couldn't hear the tone he used, she knew what he was suggesting; and, oddly, she wasn't frightened by it in a bad way.
Before she could think straight enough for a reply, Nix was pulling her off in some direction. She trotted after him, pulling her suitcase as they went towards what she hoped was the exit. With how sharp her eyes were, it took her a moment to figure out why the hell there was another Nix standing at the door when, already, her boyfriend was at her side. She blinked, dumbstruck, as the two boys went and hugged each other. Payton knew he had a twin, but she wasn't used to perfectly-identical twins. She and Paige hadn't even looked this alike since before high school! When the Nix, version two, spoke to her, it took her a moment to remember that she couldn't answer with sign language; this guy wouldn't understand. Giving Nix a joking glare for not warning her about this, she gave his twin a sweet smile and nod, following them out to the car and surrendering her suitcase before climbing into the back seat. She buckled up, smiling at Nix again as he got in. Pulling her iPad from her purse, she typed out, "You could've given me some warning." Pay shook her head at him, reaching up to give him a gentle kiss. If this was only the first event of the trip, Las Vegas was sure going to be interesting.

Nix hadn’t even thought about what they might do in Vegas. For him, coming home meant the same thing most of the time; hanging out with his brothers, racing in the desert and invading The Strip for a night of heavy drinking and partying with his brothers and all of their high school friends who were available. They were memorable nights that no one had the foggiest clue about. He knew Payton wouldn’t enjoy all of that though and he wanted to get her comfortable in the City of Sin before he started falling into an old routine. Besides, he wanted to show her everything and get her to fall in love with the city that he held close to his heart. He might spend the rest of his life in New York, but Vegas would always be his home.
He took note of what she said to him and then laughed loudly, catching his brother’s attention. “What? I did tell you that I had a twin.”
he said innocently, kicking the back of the driver’s chair to get his clone’s attention. “Score another one up for Nix and Nate.” He teased lightly, leaning down to kiss Payton again as his brother pulled the car out of the lot and onto the first stretch of road. There was a forty minute drive from the airport to the McKenzie home, but with Nathan as their chauffeur it definitely wouldn’t be boring or quiet. “I thought you saw the picture of my brothers in my apartment. Unless you did see it and think that Nate was me?” He asked, smirking across at her and raising his eyebrow as he waited for her to answer. Most of the ride was of the twins tormenting each other. Nate made comments about Nix being a cripple, Nix insulted his car, music taste and complained that he was driving too slow. Nix did his best to keep Payton included too, pointing out all the landmarks that meant something to him or his family. The one he had the most fun pointing out was the wall that he fell off when he was just four, splitting his head open. Proudly he explained that it was his first ever trip to the hospital and then Nate pipped in with “The first of about a thousand.” which earned him another kick to the back of the seat. The McKenzie home wasn’t in the heart of the city but the neighbourhood wasn’t quite enough to call it a suburban home either. It was all on the one floor, but it was large with rocks and trees decorating the front yard, which was dry and resembled the surrounding desert too. There were three cars already in the open garage and on the driveway, leaving enough space for Nate to park up next to Derek’s new sedan. “Has pops cleaned the pool out?” Nix asked, aiming the question at his twin as he climbed out of the car, moving to grab his case from the trunk. “This morning, when ma nagged him enough.” The brothers laughed and Nix turned to Payton with a smile. “Brace yourself. What happens in Vegas might stay in Vegas, but what happens inside these doors should probably be forgotten.” There was no telling what his family would do or reminisce about this time around and Nix didn’t want to see Payton looking like a deer in the headlights once all of that began. Payton had never fit in well with a party scene. There were too many people to try and pay attention to, too much going on, and everything moved too fast for her and her iPad. She couldn't keep up with a conversation, which turned nights out into ones of frustration for her. She'd heard stories of what happened in Vegas when Nix had returned home, and it had made her a bit nervous about going along with him for the nights on the strip. If he stayed back for her, she'd feel guilty for ruining the trip; if she went with, she'd only sit there alone in silence while he screwed off with his friends. Either way, it looked like they were going to have to find something else for entertainment.
"But not that you looked the exact same," she wrote back, rolling her eyes jokingly as he laughed. Payton met his lips again, a smile tugging on hers from how happy he was now. This was the Nix she knew and loved; the guy who'd met her this morning was almost a complete stranger, so she was glad to have her hyper boyfriend back. "I still think he's you now," she wrote, smirking up at him and sticking her tongue out. They did look scarily alike, but, by the end of the trip, she was sure she'd find something to set them apart. The way they spoke or moved; those were the things she payed attention to instead of sound, so she'd probably pick up on one of those by the time she and Nix got on their flight home.
Payton payed attention as best she could during the ride. She watched Nathan's face in the mirror, then her boyfriend's next to her, keeping up with the conversation and looking wherever they pointed. She couldn't help giving Nix a joking glare at the hospital story, remembering his threats of someone ending up in the emergency room over the course of the visit.
She gladly got out of the car when it pulled up, hoping that she'd get to stand for awhile now. After sitting on the plane, and now in the car, she was very sick of not using her legs. Pay hopped out, looking to Nix and returning his smile as he spoke. Signing, as her iPad was tucked up, she said, "We're going to get attacked, aren't we?" From how many cars were present, she knew they were the last ones here. That meant meeting everyone at once, within seconds of each other. Well, hopefully she didn't freak out too much.

Nix had every intention of making sure that Payton felt like one of his family during this trip. He wanted her to be a part of everything they did, within reason; he didn’t really think she’d like the idea of jumping off rocks in the desert. However, the white blonde forensic kid was far from perfect and he knew that he’d probably slip up, no matter how hard he tried not to. He got caught up in things rather easily, given his personality and his ever excited mannerisms. Still, he would try his best and he knew that his family would more than lovingly take in the young brunette, treating her like she had been a part of the brood for the longest of times. It was what they did with all the girlfriends of the McKenzie boys and Nix knew that they’d already be gathered in the house, ready to save Payton from whatever antics the boys decided to come up with this time.
Nix chuckled and shook his head lightly. “I told you I had a twin, I thought the identical part would be obvious!”
He laughed, trying to stretch out in the compact backseat of the car and failing, forcing him to kick his brother’s chair again to send some more abuse his way. “C’mon, we’re the same height! Give me some room back here!” He told Nate, hitting his legs off the seat for emphasis about his problem. He read Payton’s typed up reply and shook his head, cocking his thumb in the direction of his clone. “Try kissing him and you’ll quickly tell the difference; he slobbers!” Nix joked, ignoring Nate as he flipped him off. This was only the banter with one of his siblings and soon there would be another two thrown into the mix, so this really was the calm before the storm of this little vacation. Grinning down at her, Nix shook his head and glanced up at the house he had grown up in right up until he moved to New York for college. “We could always climb in through my bedroom window and hide for a bit.” He suggested with a goofy smirk. It had been how he had snuck out and in during his teenage years to avoid his ma’s yelling or scolding whenever it was late or he’d ruined something he owned, climbing over a wire fence. “It won’t be that bad, I promise. Once the introductions are out of the way, we can sneak off so I can show you around and then we’ll probably have some time to relax and freshen up before ma calls us for dinner.” He said sincerely. They may have been a bit of an extreme family, but they did give each other some space when it was wanted. He followed Nate up the path and hauled his suitcase inside the house, leaving it against the wall and turning to take Payton’s and do the same with it, making sure they were out of the way before going into the family room, which was already filled with McKenzies and their partners. Nix circled through the introductions slowly enough for Pay to get to recognise each of them. “Ma, Nate and Derek you know already. That’s my pops in the corner, Claire is Derek’s bride-to-be, Robert is my second oldest brother in the corner with his girlfriend Marissa and Julie here is Nate’s poor suffering girlfriend. Everyone, this is Payton.” He gestured around the room and then having the feeling that his girlfriend might be a little overwhelmed, he took her hand and waved to his family. “I’m gonna show her around the place and start unpacking our stuff. Catch you at dinner.” He winked down at Payton and gently led her back out into the hallway, kissing her softly, just to reassure her.
