Allela was still a little surprised by her friend’s marriage and pregnancy that seemed to happen overnight. One second she was out with Allela talking music and having a crazy ass time and then the next the brunette was hearing that wedding bells had chimed and there was the promise of diaper changing in Ayden’s future. She was not envious at all of the girl, savouring her freedom more than ever whenever she thought about her fellow musician’s new life. Still, Ayden seemed happy enough and the two girls butted heads often enough to know that it was better to try and challenge the other’s point of view by now.
She hadn’t called by in a long while though, Allela’s life being consumed by work and the band, along with Ryder’s shock marriage situation too. Why was everyone settling down around her? Was New York that damn different to Glasgow that Allela was breaking some unspoken rule of society by being single and completely uninterested in a relationship by age twenty? Whatever it was, the brunette had no intention of hopping on the bandwagon any time soon. Just because she hadn’t seen Ayden, it didn’t mean she hadn’t heard of everything. Apparently, her friend’s hormones were raging more than ever and people were acting as though the retired-tomboy was a ticking time bomb just waiting to explode.
That didn’t worry Allela though. She had two nephews and a niece these days thanks to her expansive family and crazy pregnant chicks were not on her list of top fears. If Ayden wanted to explode at her, then she could and Allela would just tell her to sit down, get a grip and get over it. She knew it was never personal in these situations and Ayden could probably do with someone who wasn’t worried about saying the wrong thing and setting her off. The Glaswegian had seen far worse than her friend on a temper run, but she supposed for Caleb’s sake that it would be a lot better once those kids were outside rather than in.
She had a day off and with no other plans urgently needing her attention, she spent the morning playing her guitar and singing before walking Jesse and returning home, grabbing lunch and glancing at the clock, deciding now was a better time as any to visit the waddling wife. Grabbing her bag and the usual necessities, Allela climbed in her car and drove across the city to where Ayden lived. Hopefully, this would be one of the times Caleb was out so that the two could chat like themselves without him interrupting. She liked the guy, but she wanted to see her friend and not the married couple today. Parking her car and making her way up the building steps, Allela knew she probably should’ve sent a text first, but it was rare she ever did on visits such as this; the element of surprise was something she had mastered long ago and would probably come to bite her in the ass one day.

Ayden hated being pregnant. The cravings, moodswings, and everything else that came along with it were putting her through hell and back. It didn't help that she was carrying not one, but two children, especially since this was her first time. At the rate this one was going, there was a very slim chance of a second. With the way she was feeling now, she'd do anything to make sure there wasn't; it'd be condemning herself to torture all over again.
It had been a long time since she'd spoken to someone who didn't shy away every time Ayden's temper sparked. Even Caleb had been watching himself lately, something which drove her nuts. She wasn't about to bite their heads off, even if she did snap; normal, non-pregnant Ayden did that, and everyone didn't have a problem with it then. Something about the rounded belly had people petting and fawning over her like she was a doll. They wouldn't let her lift anything, Cal carried her school bag for her, no one let her walk up the steps; she was lucky she was still allowed to cook once a week! Miss Independence was not enjoying being babied like this, even if there were two little ones growing inside of her. She'd taken care of herself her entire life; being pregnant didn't change any of that.
With her surprise marriage and the announcement of the pregnancy, Ayden hadn't seen her musical pal since long before her wedding band had found its place on her hand. She missed going out to bars and concerts with Allela, and she especially missed how normal it had been when they'd been together. That Ayden and the current one seemed like two very different people; she only hoped she could go back to some form of the "old" Ayden once these babies were out.
She had taken a much-needed day of rest, meaning she'd called into work sick and asked her professor to email her the work. It wasn't too hard, though the graduation fees and planning were accumulating rapidly. No; she'd promised not to worry too much about it today. Cal already freaked out enough over it all, and she was supposed to stay stress-free. Yeah right. Ayden lovingly shoved her husband out of their apartment that morning, claiming she'd be fine and could order in for food if she needed to. He worried about her when she cooked alone, saying that she could strain something bending over for pans or reaching for supplies in the top cupboards. She just shook her head and went to sit on the couch, planning to veg out and maybe catch up on some of the sleep she'd been missing lately.

Allela didn’t see why there should be any difference in Ayden’s general life. Maybe she couldn’t drink for a bit or party hard, but she was still the same old girl. She heard rumours that Caleb and others were fussing and fawning over her as though she was the first pregnant woman to walk the earth, which really made no sense. Allela didn’t even do that when her own family and siblings were expecting. Her ma would scold her for it, but Allela simply didn’t get why a pregnant person couldn’t do things for themselves. If that were truly the case then pregnancy rates would have dropped a long time ago and the human population wouldn’t be growing out of hand so quickly.
She reckoned her friend could do with some normalcy without the fussing husband and constant reminder of the babies and everything else. If Caleb had his way, Allela assumed he would have Ayden locked in a padded room for the duration of the pregnancy, just to be on the safe side. She might not have been a mother herself, but Allela had a decent knowledge of pregnancies and babies from her siblings and the memories of their own three pregnancies back when Allela was still in Glasgow. She could probably help Ayden knock some sense into the panicking father-to-be if she wanted it and Allela would probably have fun doing that too, just because she could and it might give Ayden a brief moment of the ‘old’ days without everything centring around the growing belly or the endless ‘what ifs’ of the future.
Walking inside the apartment building, Allela moved to the elevators, pressing the button to call it as she popped her fruity gum and glanced around at the empty hall surrounding her. The ‘ding’ signalled the opening of the doors and she slipped inside, hitting the button again to close the doors and take her to the right floor. Hopping out, her shoelaces whipping against her legs, Allela counted the doors until she reached the right one and then she knocked hard with her fist, loud enough for them inside to hear. “Ay, if yer in there, lemme in.”
She called in a slight sing song voice, just to catch her friend’s attention and alert her to who was on the other side of the closed door. An afternoon of junk food, sarcastic conversations and good old laughs was probably exactly what the pregnant girl needed. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Once these babies came, Ayden knew her days of partying and drinking would be few and far between. She'd be working to support the babies, taking care of herself in order to car for the babies, spending nights awake because of the babies; everything would be about the babies. One may have been easier to handle, which she quickly reminded Caleb of every time he told her she was doing just great with the two. After all, this was his fault; she would continue to blame it on him, even if she'd been a part of it, too.
Ayden was supposed to be staying calm and stress-free. That meant no freaking out about finals, no nerves about graduation, no worrying about missing work, and definitely no screaming when she got fed up with all the things she "couldn't" do. She had been ignoring couldn't's practically before she was born. She couldn't play basketball because she was too short; she was the youngest captain ever of the high school team. She couldn't become a piano player because she had to take over her parents' newspaper; here she was in New York as a music major. She couldn't fall in love with Cal because it'd screw up their life-long friendship; last time she'd checked, it'd been his last name she'd taken on just weeks earlier. Yeah, Ayden and the word "couldn't" didn't exactly get along. Too bad that, this time, she couldn't be a rebel.
Ayden relaxed back into the cushions of the couch, trying to get herself comfortable for a day of doing nothing. Maybe she'd get up and make some popcorn or something; she'd need something to snack on seeing as she practically never stopped stuffing her face these days. She was just about to reach to get the remote when she heard the familiar voice on the other side of the apartment door. She smiled brightly, but didn't bother even attempting to get up; it'd be pointless when she'd just sit back down anyways. "It's open!" she called out loudly, adjusting her shirt over her swelled stomach as she sat up a little bit straighter and waited for her musical friend to come waltzing through the door.
