Where she was, working at the studio was just the logical step to get where she really wanted to be. Before she was twenty five, she wanted to have her own studio or at least be nearly there. That had been her goal since she was old enough to make them and understand what they really were. Having someone to share those dreams and goals with was just icing on an incredibly amazing cake; especially considering she hadn’t pictured there being someone in her life during the rises and falls of her early career. It was going to take a hell of a lot of work, long laborious hours and plenty of all-nighters. She had gotten lucky, getting the job at the studio, and she knew others didn’t get such extraordinary breaks like that. She knew Leander had to work for a position at a paper after he graduated, much like the rest of her friends. And she usually left Leander to his school work when he had it because it was important to him, so it was to her as well. She wanted him to get the best grades, so he would get noticed and get his dream job just as she got hers. She didn’t say anything in reply. If he got a headache after one drink, then he shouldn’t be drinking at all, Jay wasn’t like that. She could have a few and still be fine to get up at the crack of dawn and be at work. To be fair, she didn’t drive those days, but that just meant she was careful with her life. She continued to munch on her nuggets as though they were the only things keeping her grounded.
"Only because it seemed like a romantic gesture! And now you're making it seem like I wanted the whole bloody bottle to myself!" she said as calmly as she could, feeling that good old Irish charm trying to spring to life. She wouldn't let it because she knew she had a set of lungs on her and she wasn't opposed to a yelling match, unlike Leander. It may not have solved anything but she always felt a hell of a lot better afterwards. She had gotten into many of those on her nights out; some real, some faked for fun. Jack closed her eyes for a minute, setting her nearly empty plate on the table and grabbing her go-to comfort food. "You know what, never mind. I'm not getting into a fight over something so trivial," she said, wrapping her arm around the bowl protectively while her other hand picked at the treats it held like treasure. She was annoyed, and she knew she'd get over it, but she didn't like the way it all sounded; as if she wanted the whole bottle to herself. One glass wouldn't hurt as long as neither of them drove and she mixed it with some clear soda. Chloe left enough different kinds around his flat that there was probably a can lying about.
Jay sat in silence, picking at the candies and watching the movie as if it were a hockey game and she had money on it. That much intensity just so she wouldn’t lose her temper. It was too late to argue anything and really, Jay didn’t want to fight with Leander. But she also wanted him to see her side of what she had been getting at. Now though, the night was ruined, at least in her eyes it was, and she didn’t think there was anything that could bring it back. Right then and there she just needed to internally fume about it until she could get in front of her laptop or behind a camera a get all her temper out. Maybe she would get up early and go for a walk through the city; take some pictures. Her SUV was fine in Leander’s buildings visitor parking, she wouldn’t need it and if her trip around didn’t work and she wasn’t willing to go back to Leander’s right yet, she knew people who wouldn’t mind helping her out. It was rare that Jay asked for help with rides; it was usually a photo shoot for school that had her rushing around practically begging for people to help her out. Eventually the TV screen started to get blurry and she didn’t have her glasses with her, having left them on her desk. She didn’t know how long it was after that, though it felt like seconds, she was fast asleep hugging her bowl of treats like it was her security blanket.

Chloe had always been close to her brother and the second he had told her about his engagement, she had been overjoyed. Jay wasn’t just her brother’s girlfriend, she was one of Chloe’s closest friends too and she was unbelievably happy for the two of them, even if they were still so young. Still, after her illness, Chloe’s perspective on her own life had changed and the thought of marriage right now was something that would put her in a laughing state for a good while. However, with Leander and Jay it seemed different and she knew that they might actually make it work.
That wasn’t the reason why she chose to run around to her brother’s apartment at this hour of the night though. She was excited about something else and since Leander was the most important person in her life, he was the only one she thought of running to at this hour. Chloe had been late at the college campus, training with the rest of the dive team and preparing for a competition at the end of the month. It might have not been important to everyone, but diving had been her release after she was in remission and now it was more than just a passionate hobby for the young brunette. The competition kept her training hard though, but the athletic artist didn’t mind that, especially not when she had just perfected a tricky dive with a high difficulty level, much to the pleasure of her coach. It was just in time for the competition and after being instructed to make sure she found herself in the water each day, the team’s chances of success were higher. She might not have been the best diver on the team, but she was good and this meant a lot to her.
Chloe rarely drove, usually taking the journey from the campus to her apartment as another chance to train, often jogging from point A to B to end the evening. Leander lived a little further away from the university than she did and he would probably have a mini-breakdown if he thought Chloe had walked the whole way on her own, so she took the small car she had saved up for across the city to the place he called home. Out of old habits, she used her spare key to get into the building and to unlock the apartment door, only knocking once she was halfway around it with a typically happy smile on her face. “Hey guys!”
She called with a light wave as her dark eyes spied them both on the couch, seemingly watching a movie. She quickly noticed that Jack was asleep and winced, mouthing her apology at her brother before leaning in the doorway. She hadn’t intended to stay for too long and now she definitely wouldn’t; she didn’t want to wake Jay up. She looked over at her big brother and threw him a puzzled look, recognising only too well the exasperated look on his face. “What’s up?” She asked softly, so as not to disturb the sleeping sister-in-law to be. Leander was a bit disappointed with the way the evening had turned out. It was supposed to be him and Jay, celebrating their new engagement and taking a moment to catch up with each other. They'd hardly had one since she returned home, and the idea of relaxing together had seemed perfect, but, apparently, even these innocent plans weren't allowed to happen correctly. He would admit that there had been thoughts of the night being entirely "innocent," though they'd been in the back of his mind. He'd just wanted to spend time with his bride-to-be, and not have to worry about the time, or rushing off to dinner, or even work. He'd wanted to have her all to himself. He hated fighting with Jay, but he hated when she pressed on him for things she knew he wasn't comfortable with. It may've been one glass, but, in his eyes, it was one too many; he'd always been a stickler for the rules, and he always would be, even if it made those around him upset.
He waited until Jay fell asleep, barely watching the movie or touching the spread he'd put together for her. All of it made him feel sick, mainly because it was all of her favorite foods filling the bowls and plates, and his stomach was flipping just at the thought. Let Jay pig out on the food when she woke up; maybe she'd forget about the drink. Though, from the looks of it, even this wasn't enough. She still wanted more.
Leander climbed carefully off the couch, leaving the pillows to support Jay in case she fell over or something. He grabbed her plate and his own, going into the kitchen and throwing them into the dishwasher. He put the few other things into the washer, as well, tidying up so the place was spotless. After setting the washer to run, he returned to the living room, taking a seat on the comfy chair instead of the couch. He pulled his laptop from its charger near the wall, starting in on the essays and articles due for school. Leander was in no mood to deal with Jay now, but the excuse of writing would at least give him something to do.
At the sound of the apartment door opening, he looked up in surprise, a faked smile taking over his face as his sister appeared. She may've been friends with Jay, but he didn't want her in the middle of all of this; she had her own drama to worry about without having to look after her brother's, as well. "Nothing; just a bit tired from work," he said with a shake of his head, closing his laptop and setting it on the coffee table. "What're you doing here? I thought you had practice or something tonight."

It was rare when Jay fell asleep so quickly, but when she was visibly upset about something, she went out like a light with a switch. But she was just that; upset that neither of them could just drop the subject. She didn’t want the damn drink and he was acting as though it was all she wanted. That more than anything upset her beyond belief. It really hurt her. She loved him and loved the set up he’d done just for her. He even went so far as to get all her favourite snacks. She’d been looking forward to their night together. It was supposed to be nice, sweet, just them celebrating. But no, she had to go and open her mouth. Why couldn’t she just keep that thing shut?
Still, she fell asleep fast and the dreams came immediately. Nightmares, really and Jay just as rarely had those. At some point in the short time she slept, she stretched out properly, bowl of candies still tugged in close like her security blanket. Her dreams were fitful and she squeezed the bowl closer. She didn’t know if she was moving about or mumbling in her sleep, but she was terrified. She didn’t know what she was doing sitting in a car with her feet up, but there she was. She was singing along to a song on the radio, laughing and having fun when she felt something on her leg. Wiping it away, she continued. The next few times, she did the same, but eventually she got tired of that and ignored it. Then she turned her head to look out the side window and spotted tiny, hairy legs crawling up over her knees. She screamed in her dream and screamed out loud, falling off the couch. The bowl went flying, candies thrown every which way as her wrist slammed into the side of the coffee table. “Mẹ ngọt ngào của thần mà làm tổn thương,” she said, hotly, cradling her left wrist to her chest with a couple hot tears freeing themselves from her dark eyes.
She hoped it wasn’t broken. She couldn’t do much with a broken wrist, even if it was her left one and she was right handed. Carefully, so she wouldn’t use the wrist at all, she held it to her chest and used her right hand on the edge of the couch to pull herself up to her feet, a pained look on her face. She was getting better at least at not swearing in English. She felt terrible swearing in front of people and didn’t do it often, only when she was out and partying and when she was so engrossed in her work that she forgot people were around. But she was small and her smile boasted too much innocence for people to get mad at her usually. It seemed like Leander was the only one her innocently sweet smile didn’t work on all the time. She was really depressed, a feeling she didn’t get; ever. Jay barrelled through things and when she’d tried to do that, Leander wouldn’t let it drop and kept at it, and so she kept at it and it brought her mood down even lower. She loved the man, every little quirky bit of him and his personality. She didn’t mind that he didn’t want to drink. And really, him being so strict about drinking and other things might get her to change her wild child ways a little bit. Her eyes went wide when she spotted Chloe. “Oh, Chloe! I...” she said, looking between the siblings before slowly turning away. She didn’t want to interrupt the two. She knew how close the siblings were and as much as she adored Chloe, she didn’t want to be interrupting what could be a serious conversation.

If there was one thing Chloe recognised it was when someone was faking that everything was alright. She had done it herself and had seen the cracks in the fake smiles that her family had given her during the time she had been really sick. She couldn’t blame them for trying to reassure her, especially when the times were darker and the chances of her survival were still uncertain. She rarely saw them now, but right now she could tell that Leander was only pretending that there was nothing playing on his mind. Sometimes she wished he would remember that she wanted to help him as much as he had helped her, and that she wasn’t some kid anymore who had to be kept in the dark about every problem; she was stronger than her small frame suggested.
She threw her brother a knowing look, not buying his BS for one second. Still, she had a feeling he still wouldn’t tell her, though from the tension in the apartment and the positions of Jay and him, she could only think that there had been some sort of falling out between the two love birds. If Jay was asleep though, then it couldn’t be anything serious or she’d have expected the Irish girl to have stormed out by now. Chloe knew her brother could be infuriating at times, though it was usually because he cared a little too much. “Practice does come to an end, eventually.”
She said, showing him the damp ends of her hair as though it was proof that she had been in the pool, even if she wasn’t in her usual sports gear tonight. Chloe moved into the kitchen and grabbed a drink from the refrigerator before sliding back into the drama zone. “And I mastered my 3.7 dive tonight.” She added casually as though it was no big deal and that she hadn’t been practicing it for over a month now. It has also been the dive that had left the very nasty bruise on her thigh just two weeks earlier when she awkwardly slipped into it. Her curiosity was pushing her to ask Leander what had happened before she arrived at the apartment, but before she could form the question she heard the scream and the crash on the coffee table before the stream of foreign words that came out of Jay’s mouth. Her dark eyes were wide and she left her brother’s side to go and check on her friend and the girl who would one day be her sister-in-law. “Geez, Jay, are you alright?” She looked at the injured wrist, already knowing that it would probably hurt for a few days. She was no doctor and never would be, but she had seen a fair share of wrist injuries on herself and the rest of the dive team. Chloe sprung away to get some frozen peas from the freezer, holding them against Jay’s wrist before looking across at Leander with a confused look. “Why is the coffee table so damn close to the couch?” She asked, momentarily certain it never used to be in that position, though furniture was hardly something she paid her full attention too. Leander may've been as thick as thieves with his younger sister, but that didn't mean he told her everything. From the time she was born, he'd taken it upon himself to filter things so that she only got the good points of a story. He didn't like burdening her, much like he didn't like burdening anyone. There was a reason he had a journal tucked into a box in his closet, and a reason that Chloe and Jay both didn't know about it. They may've called him callous for not showing the emotions that boiled in his heart, but he called it self-control. If he didn't reveal it all, he didn't have to see their pity or watch them take sides; he could deal with everything himself.
Both the girls in his life may've been tired of his over-protective nature, but that was who Leander was. He worried, he fussed, and he put his heart behind everything he did. That included things from cheering Chloe on at any of her sports meets, to making sure the love of his life was safe and sound and not breaking too many laws at once. They could scream at him all they wanted, threaten whatever they chose; he'd always be trying to protect them, no matter how much they hated it. "Right. No one jumped to their death tonight, then?" he joked, carefully settling his laptop on the chair as he stood up, talking to his sister as she made herself at home. He always said that his apartment was hers whenever she needed it, and she did seem to almost live there most days. Heck, Dex was her pet, and Leander was surprised the vocal little bird wasn't screeching for attention at the sound of her voice! "Congrats, sis! You get to do it at the meet now, huh?" he grinned proudly, giving his sister a one-armed hug. Despite worrying to no end about her and her sports, he was proud of everything she accomplished with them, and tried to be there to support her as often as he could.
At the sound of Jay getting up off the couch, Leander silently ducked into the kitchen, pretending to be tidying up the half-full bags of candy on the counter. He winced at the sounds of pain, but brushed them off and only handed Chloe the frozen peas when she came back into the kitchen. "It's always been there. It's not the table's fault," he muttered hotly, shaking his head at the sight of Jay hunched over with her wrist. Leander was upset with her, and his sister had things well in hand; it wasn't like Jay ever admitted to wanting his help, anyways.

If there was one thing Jay wanted more than anything, it was for Leander to open up to her. She held nothing back from him and she just wanted a little more insight to the wonderful man she loved. As it was, she had to learn as they went and get whatever info she needed from his sister! And even she didn’t have all the answers. They were so good together. He was able to calm her down and brought some proper order to her life and she kept him on his toes and brought some much needed chaos to his life.
Jay brushed it off. If Leander hadn’t said anything in the time Chloe had been there, she wasn’t about to spill it all. She wasn’t opposed to burdening anyone when she needed to vent, but she was so over it, she just didn’t want to talk about it anymore. “A broken wrist is the least of my worries tonight,” she muttered, wiping the hot tears off her cheeks. Hell, at this point, she was pretty sure that nightmare was worse than a broken wrist. She had feeling in her fingers so it wasn’t broken at least, but it still needed to be looked at. More than anything she wanted to be consoled by Leander. She wanted his strong arms wrapped around her and his voice telling her that she was going to be just fine. She wanted that but knew it was too soon to get that from him. He was still too mad and she was still too sad about it all.
Jay accepted the bags of frozen peas, keeping them in the same spot as Chloe had set them. It wasn’t so bad there and she could deal with that pain. Her tolerance for it was pretty high, it was just the shock of the nightmare and slamming her wrist into the table’s edge that had her feeling it worse. “Can I get a ride to the A+E?” She asked, sniffling. She didn’t think she should have had to ask for some help. If he loved her, why wasn’t he letting go of their little argument and at her side seeing if she was okay? All she wanted was him and that just wasn’t in the cards for the night. Jay didn’t wait for either of their answers; she just walked over and set the frozen peas on the counter next to Leander, frowning sadly up at him for just a second, before lifting her hand wanting to just touch his arm but stopped herself, shook her head and walked back out of the room. She felt terrible. Feeling even worse now, she picked up her bags and shoved her feet into the closest flat shoes. She wanted away for a bit. She needed some air.

Chloe sometimes wondered why people were insistent on keeping things from her. She understood that her brother could be a private person, but she wanted to be there for him and do everything that he had been able to do for her over the years. She didn’t like it when people didn’t tell her things or kept secrets from her; it reminded her too much of when she was sick and there were whispers between her parents and the doctors. It may not have been any of her business, but it still made her feel paranoid and even a little scared, depending on who it was holding back the information she felt as though she needed to know. It wasn’t as if she would judge anyone or yell and scream like some petulant child but she did feel sometimes that Leander would benefit from talking about things like feelings just a little bit more.
Rolling her eyes, Chloe threw Leander the look that she had reserved for her brother a long time ago. “Yeah, because that’s the aim in diving.”
She said sarcastically. Sometimes her brother’s jokes were awful, but she loved him anyway and she didn’t think he’d be the same without them. “I did slip on the steps on the way up. Chris forgot to dry his feet first so the way up was more terrifying than being ten metres above the water.” She shook her head and sighed. Luckily the bruise would probably only be small, if there was one at all, and no blood had been drawn from her or anyone else on the team. “Yup! I do, but only if I spend every day in the pool until then practicing to make sure it wasn’t just a fluke.” Not that Chloe ever minded spending time in the water and the whole thing was just another excuse to increase the amount of time she spent exercising, so long as she didn’t go and pull a muscle between now and then. Chloe didn’t hear exactly what Jay said, but her mood only added to the suspicion growing in her mind. There was something not quite right with the happy couple this evening and Chloe felt as though she should probably sit down and mediate between the pair of them. Leander probably wouldn’t have let her though, so she just shook her head and then looked up at her brother. “I never said it was the table’s fault.” She said, arching her eyebrow at her brother, knowing now that there were definitely problems between the two lovebirds. Leander probably wasn’t going to make anything better by getting feisty over the table though. She turned back to Jay and smiled softly. “Of course you can, sweets. I’ve actually brought my car with me tonight.” She jingled the keys in her hand and stood up, waiting for Jay to come with her. The quicker they got her wrist seen to, the quicker they could probably move on from whatever drama had taken place before she had arrived. Turning her attention back to Leander, she kissed his cheek like she always did when she left but gave him a steely look before pulling the door open. “You’ll talk to me tomorrow.” She said, letting him know that she wasn’t about to let his mood slide and that she expected some sort of explanation for…this later.
