Romeo was not one for throwing words around and not meaning them. He didn’t believe in saying something just to get what you wanted. “I love you” was not something he said for the fun and games it brought along and he had been planning on waiting until the right moment, when everything was just perfect like it had been on their first date in the moment of their first kiss. These feelings had been lingering for some time, but he didn’t want Zoe thinking that he was just “another city boy” using those three little words to get what he wanted. Their fight might have been long over now and both of them might have moved on, but Romeo still felt a small pang in his chest whenever he thought of something that might lead Zoe to thinking that again. It still hurt that she had that belief in the first place before that fight had brought her concerns to the surface.
As much as he loved moments like this, with Zoe in his arms and his lips on hers, Romeo knew that it had to stop soon. If they didn’t then it would be harder to cool down and get back to their innocent norm that they had. Also, if it got any more heated, then Romeo knew he’d make a move or do something instinctive that would scare Zoe away. However, he thought it would be his touch or his hands that scared her away; he didn’t think that his vocal chords would pip them to the post and stun everyone involved in the moment.
He blinked, taking a moment to realise that Zoe wasn’t pressed up against his chest anymore. His green eyes met hers in a haze and he needed another few seconds to remember what he had said, his eyes widening as he realised that those three small words had in fact left his lips. He didn’t know what to say to her stuttering; in fact, he just sat there doing a brilliant impersonation of a goldfish until his girlfriend found the oven timer as the perfect excuse to get away. Blinking for a moment, Romeo quickly lost the heated passion from the second before and realised that he might have just made a huge mistake. Scrambling to his feet, the good-natured Scouser moved to the kitchen, keeping his distance from Zoe until he knew what was going on in her head. “Zoe, love, I didn’t mean t’ say it like that. I’m sorry.”
He didn’t know what to say since he didn’t quite know what her reaction was other than shock. The speed she moved though hadn’t filled him with confidence, but he had to see this out now. Shoving his hands into his pockets, Romeo kept his eyes on the country blonde and waited for her to say or do something. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Zoe could pull off the deer-in-the-headlights expression well; it found its way onto her face anything stunned or completely shocked her. It'd been her reaction the night Romeo'd had played Superman, and it was her reaction now as he spoke the three words that could tear any relationship apart. She didn't know how to respond; no boy had ever said those words to her and actually meant them. Zoe didn't suspect him of lying, but she also hadn't been prepared for him to say something like that, especially not tonight. It left her dumbstruck and deer-like, and wondering what the heck she was going to say back.
She wanted to say the words in return; she knew she wanted to, and would mean them if she did. But, she didn't know if it'd been a slip of the tongue or a reaction brought on by one of their rare heated moments. Zoe didn't want to throw her heart out there if he was going to just take everything back; she didn't want to risk everything like that. Their relationship was too important, too special, to be taking leaps and bounds like that. She may've trusted Romeo, but that didn't mean she'd lay herself on the line at a moment's notice; that could take years before she was ready for it.
Zoe slid the hot cookies onto a plate, setting the spatula down in the sink when she was finished. She heard Romeo coming into the kitchen, but she couldn't look at him; not yet, at least. She had to figure her own head out first before she tried to think about his. "So you didn't mean it?" she said slowly, hesitantly turning to peek at him. Zoe didn't know if she wanted an answer to that; she was afraid of what it might be. She couldn't stand the idea of fighting with him again, especially not so soon after their last one. It would be safer to run and leave everything to cool down; it'd be safer to hide until the storm blew over. Quickly, she added, "Maybe I should go home for the night." Her voice wasn't much above a whisper as she gulped back her fears and left the cookies alone on the counter, arranged in a neat pile on the plate. He could eat those and cool off; think about everything and talk to her when he wasn't in a haze from their intimate moment.

Romeo was growing tired of this foot-in-mouth syndrome he seemed to be developing as of late. He prided himself on his skills with words, laughing easily when his co-workers teased him for it, but recently he seemed to keep messing things up. He either said the wrong thing at the wrong time or said something that people interpreted the wrong way. He had done it with his mam, with Ellie and mostly with Zoe; tonight being no exception it seemed. The tall man of literature hadn’t meant to drop the L-Bomb in the fashion that he had done, but it wasn’t like he could take it back now and Zoe’s reaction hadn’t exactly been the one he had envisioned seeing whenever he thought about telling her his feelings. Then again, he hadn’t imagined that he’d tell her that he loved her when they were in the middle of a pretty hot make out session on his couch while his little sister was out on her first date.
At least he wasn’t thinking about Ellie now though. His thoughts were more stuck on cursing himself and worrying about his relationship with Zoe. It had been the heat of the moment that had let Romeo’s guard down and the words had rolled effortlessly off his tongue. It still felt right to say them to Zoe, but it hadn’t been the perfect moment that Romeo knew she deserved to hear them in, especially since their relationship wasn’t based on their physicality.
He was chewing on his lip, his olive green eyes fixed on his girlfriend as she fiddled with the freshly baked cookies on the tray. He took a step forward, but still kept a good distance between them; he wanted to be able to see Zoe’s every reaction. “No. I mean yeah!”
He groaned, shaking his head and then dragging his unruly thoughts together. “I meant it, Zoe. I love you. I just didn’t mean t’ say it like that when we were in that position. I wanted it t’ be special.” He shrugged his shoulders and looked away, not sure of what else he could say to remedy this mess his stupid tongue had caused. His head snapped up and he made sure to block the doorway, not wanting Zoe to leave when they were like this. “No! Please, Zoe, stay. Look, I get it if I freaked y’ out and I’m not tryin’ t’ demand anythin’ from y’. If y’ don’t feel ready, if it’s too soon for the L word, then I’m sorry. I’m not expectin’ anythin’, but it’s ‘ow I feel about y’, an’ I prob’ly ‘ave for a while now.” He bit his lip and then shrugged again, forcing himself to keep his eyes fixed on Zoe. “I didn’t mean t’ scare y’.” Right now he didn’t know what was happening or where they stood on this whole “I love you” ride, but he knew that he would do whatever it took to make Zoe feel comfortable again. Zoe had to laugh sometimes at Romeo's idea of "scaring" her. He did scare her; the very idea of him scared her. But, she had learned to handle it and to keep on her toes when around him; she never knew what little trick he'd play next, and being alert was really her only defense against it. She'd grown used to it, and could usually bounce back from any situation she got thrown into, but, his kisses had left her vulnerable, and his words hadn't been expected; he'd caught her off guard yet again.
She could feel his eyes watching her, no doubt trying to gauge her reaction to the situation at hand. The problem was, she didn't know how to react. Should she be upset? Excited? Storming out? Zoe didn't know what to do; she was at a loss, especially since her head was still spinning from their earlier activities.
Her breath stopped as he said no, flooding out again as he corrected himself. This was not going well; wasn't the L-bomb supposed to be some big, happy occasoin? She turned around to face him, leaning back against the counter with her arms crossed protectively over her chest. Her face stayed blank as he rambled in the cute way he often did when he got nervous, but she could feel her heart bending and twisting with his words. It was too late to take it all back; might as well get it out herself and save them all an expensive date and a fancy dinner. She let him finish, biting her lip as she met his eyes with her blue ones. It wasn't fair to make him struggle and feel guilty about this; he didn't deserve it, not when she'd been wanting to say it for awhile now, too.
Slowly, she closed the distance between them, cuddling into his chest and breathing in the familiar scent she'd grown to love. Zoe tilted her head to look up at him, reaching up on her tip-toes to place a gentle kiss to his lips. "I love you, too, Romeo," she whispered, a smile finally coming to her lips as she kissed him again. It wasn't a secret anymore, and it never would be again; she loved him, he knew, and there was no going back now.
