She was supposed to be taking Jack to the hospital to have her wrist seen to, but all of a sudden a night out on the town seemed so much better than that! Besides. Jay was persistent and after…whatever had happened at Leander’s the poor girl looked like she could use a night to remember her youth. Chloe hoped that it was nothing too serious causing the friction between her brother and his fiancé, but she also knew that sometimes Leander could unintentionally push the wrong buttons on a person, just because of the way he cared so much about them. She adored her brother, but there was a limit to what she could handle and she presumed the same stuck for Jay too.
After taking Jay back to her place to get changed first, Chloe drove them both back to her apartment, which was closer to the clubs and bars than Jay’s own; the joys of living in student central, as it was dubbed by the kids in her building. She had a new dress that she had picked up in the sales the previous month. Most of Chloe’s wardrobe was comprised of sports clothes, since the athletic girl spent most of her time bounding from sport to sport, training session to gym session. There were a few dresses for nights out though and most of them would not get Leander’s seal of approval, like the one she squeezed herself into effortlessly.
It wasn’t like she went out and brought strange guys back to her apartment; that wasn’t Chloe’s style. There might have been nights she regretted, but it was with people she knew from school, not some sleaze from a nightclub who thought that buying a girl a drink immediately led to an invitation to the bedroom. Once she was ready and her hair no longer smelt as though she had spent the early evening in the depths of a swimming pool, she sauntered back into her living room in her heels and grinned at Jack. Chloe had poured her sister-in-law to be a drink while she went to get ready, knowing that she’d take a little longer since she had literally fallen from the pool into her car and then drove to Leander’s. “Will this do?”
She asked, giving her friend a small spin before grinning and slipping her ID and phone into the small clutch bag that matched her shoes. She had been a little uncertain at first, given Jack’s wrist, but the Irish girl had insisted that she was well enough to go out, that it was no real big deal. Just to be on the safe side, Chloe had showed her where she kept her own supports, bandages and braces; with an athletic lifestyle came the injuries and even now Chloe taped up her wrists when she was diving if they were clicking or aching even just a fraction. You could never be too careful when it came to such things and she didn’t want to be laid off or benched because she hadn’t taken proper care of herself. “C’mon then, the quicker we get there the longer we can dance for before the guys with the wandering hands invade the floor.” Chloe said, grabbing her door keys to lock up, and slipping one of the loose spares into her bag too, not wanting to have to call Eric up to let her in…again. Jay wasn’t in a foul mood anymore, she was upset but not because of the fight she’d had with Leander either. She was upset about her wrist and how he hadn’t seen if she were okay. Everything else she could let go of. But still, she’d left with Chloe with full intentions of going to consult a doctor. She’d certainly done something; every time she moved it, a sharp pain raced through her entire arm. But once she was outside, she didn’t want to visit the doctor. She wanted to do something reckless, something that would let her forgot about the reason she’d fallen asleep on the couch and woke up screaming. She was stubborn but it didn’t take much work to get Chloe to cave. And soon she was in her apartment, changing into something Leander would kill either of them for wearing and gathering her clutch, exceptional ID and phone. And then she was sitting on Chloe’s couch, wrapping her wrist up and having a drink while she waited. Jay’s hair was still intact, despite sleeping with it done up. Then it was a quick makeup job to bring the day look Clara had done to a smoky night look. These little things were part of her job and though she had Frankie and Clara for hair and makeup at work, she still enjoyed playing around with friends. She took less time getting ready since she was already mostly set.
Jack looked up from the magazine she’d been flipping through when Chloe sauntered into the living room again and did a little spin. “Stunning. I’m borrowing that sometime,” Jay said, finishing off the drink in her hand. “The pictures of this night, because you know there will be some, don’t go farther than my laptop and yours. You can bat your lashes and get away with murder, I'll get him talking quietly to me and the icy shoulder,” She said mischievously, rolling her eyes. Jay really needed a night out and she loved that Chloe wasn't the innocent little six year old child Leander thought she was. If she had to spend hours in the hospital waiting room the next day, so be it. She had her laptop and her memory cards. And she always said she could do her work from anywhere at all; time to prove her point if need be. She was ahead on all her assignments, both for school and work, so it wasn’t like she couldn’t take a personal day and sit about the A+E getting treated for whatever the hell she did to her wrist. It hurt, but Jay had some mild pain meds at her flat, so while she’d been dressing, she’d taken a couple and prayed to whichever deity that was listening that her wrist would stay relatively painless until she got some liquor in her system. Everything dulled with liquor.
Jay jumped up from the couch, brushing the vest she’d thrown on with her good hand before grabbing her clutch from the table and replacing the empty space with the magazine. “Right! I really hate that. Like, I’m not here for your touching pleasure. I swear sometimes I just want to wear a shirt that says hands off,” Jay said, rolling her eyes. She followed her sister-in-law to be out into the hall and waited until she locked up before walking with her down and out the building. Student central was the perfect place to live if you were young, carefree and enjoyed a night out on the town while living around a group of people roughly your own age. Jay hadn’t even thought about the area when she’d gone with her father house hunting. She had been eighteen when she decided it was time to move out, give herself and her parents some much needed space. Jay was sick of stealing the spare bedroom in the basement for her darkroom when she knew her parents really wanted to refurbish the space into a home gym. Naturally, being so young, her father had to co-sign for her, but signing his name to a piece of paper meant nothing after everything.
Jay hoped she’d brought enough cash with her, not liking using her credit cards for clubs; for anything really. And with the way her wrist was throbbing and her head was pounding, Jay honestly felt like a good old black-out drunken night was in order. Out on the street, Jay linked arms with Chloe, laughing at what the night before them could hold. An hour before she’d been asleep and annoyed on her fiancé’s couch. And now she was out with his sister, taking the night by storm. The line at the Marquee wasn’t long and after a few minutes of standing outside, the two were let past the red velvet robes. “Let the fun begin!” she said before the music got so loud they’d have to yell over it.

At least if Chloe accompanied Jay on this night out then she could make sure that the Irish brunette didn’t do anything too insane. Chloe wasn’t exactly Miss Goody-Two-Shoes, but she did have a limit to what she would get up too, though harmless fun on a night out while she was still young and healthy never hurt anyone. She didn’t know what had happened between her brother and his fiancé but she wasn’t about to ask either, not when Jack seemed to be in a better mood now. Chloe would pay Leander a visit in the morning and try to pry information from him instead, knowing that tension between the siblings quickly evaporated after a day or so on the rare occasions it did happen. She could push his buttons more without worrying about a major fight with anyone, and she considered Jay a friend, so she didn’t want to upset her.
Grinning, Chloe crossed to the mirror by the door to check her hair one more time. It was surprisingly easy to style, despite all the chemicals it was exposed to on an average day in the pool. “So long as you don’t tell Leander who you’ve borrowed it from. I can do without my brother raiding my wardrobe for inappropriate clothing.”
She doubted that he might actually be so extreme, but since he still saw her as some innocent little thing, Chloe found it near impossible to go on the same kind of night out with him as she did with her friends. Partying was really the one thing that separated the Haynes’ siblings. “I’m sure I could talk him around, but I agree. I’d rather him never see what happens when I go out! I’m sure it would lead to a talk and me reminding him that I’m only a year younger than he is.” It was in the nature of big brother’s to be protective, but Chloe really did think that Leander thought she was about sixteen most of the time. She didn’t mind though, she just knew that parts of her life didn’t mix with his and kept it that way. It was nice to have a close relationship with him when she had heard of so many families barely talking. Her dark eyes strayed down to Jay’s wrapped wrist, giving it a once over to make sure that it was adequately supported for their night out. She was no medical student, but her sporty lifestyle did lead to more than a few injuries and she knew how to tend and dress them by now. “It’s not too bad if they chat to you at the bar or buy you a drink first. I just get annoyed when you’re dancing away and some random stranger puts his hands on you as though it’s an open market. I’ve tossed a drink over one or two before.” She was usually a patient girl who could push them away, shake her head and tell them ‘no’ in the friendliest ways possible, but there had been one or two who couldn’t understand her or who were so drunk that they didn’t even try to be subtle and Chloe had wasted no time in showering them with her vodka and coke or cocktail. There was a fine line between flirtatious fun and sexual harassment. Chloe laughed, linking her arm with Jay’s before they stepped into the club, the loud music drowning out their voices and their thoughts as they crossed to the bar. “First drinks are on me!” She yelled over the music, leaning closer to Jay so she could hear her before ordering two of the first cocktail she saw on the menu, which happened to be Green Eyes, which Chloe adored. One of her diving friends had introduced it to her on her twenty-first and she had spent the whole night knocking them back, leaving her with a monster hangover the next day that had been cured by the greasy food she often avoided and a day of movies. Jay didn’t want to get into trouble so much as she wanted to forget the trouble she’d already gotten into. Her fiancé, as much as she loved him made her feel like a petulant six year old who got caught with her hand in the cookie jar just before dinner. But she also thought it was better that he was pissy at her than at Chloe. As far as she could tell, Leander didn’t get pissed with Chloe, but even still, this was all the better. Since she’d never had siblings, she always had a strong sense that those who did shouldn’t get mad at them; they should love them and take care of each other. Of course, she also knew there was just no way in hell every single set or group of siblings get along, but she wanted it to be that way. And at least with him annoyed at her, he wouldn’t be thinking about what his baby sister was currently up to with his fiancée. Still, it was good that Jay had a babysitter for the night. Just because she wasn’t looking for trouble didn’t mean some wouldn’t find her; it never failed. “If that man finds out, tell him you borrowed from me without my knowledge,” Jay suggested wickedly.
Jay loved how Leander made her feel, but she was hardly going to change from her rebel without a care persona right now. She was still young and needed to be wild and free. And really, as long as she went home to Leander, curled up with him and woke up by his side, where she went and what she did while she was out didn’t matter. She wasn’t the type of girl to cheat; everyone knew that so there was no cause for concern there. She just wanted to have a little fun while she was still young enough. There wasn’t any harm in that. “A talk? Love that ‘conversation’ would end with you in a convent,” Jay said rolling her eyes. It was silly how Leander thought his little sister was some innocent little girl. She wasn’t a baby anymore. And Jay had seen how well Chloe could take care of herself. There was nothing to be worried about, but she knew her fiancé would go grey before his time with concern for Chloe. Tonight wasn’t a night to worry about what Leander would do to either of them if he knew what they were up to. It was a night to never remember and a night to do some stupid things and wake up wondering how they managed to collect all the things that hadn’t been there when they started the night.
“I’ve done that a few times myself,” Jay said rolling her eyes at the stupidity of some men. “I hate how they think buying you a drink gives them permission to touch wherever they please. It doesn’t in my books.” She didn’t know when the rules changed and somehow managed to no longer apply to certain people, but she was annoyed with it, as was half the female population she was sure. It was a microscopic part of the reason she never went out with Leander. The main one being she was technically too young to be going to the clubs of New York and he was so against underage drinking. Even if she was old enough, she didn’t think she would go out with Leander. She was the hyper, do anything and worry about it later one. He was the serious one who chased after her cleaning up whatever messes she unintentionally left in her wake. “Those are some of my favourite words,” Jay called back teasing. Whenever she went out with friends, they took turns with drinks or shots. It did depend on who she was with, who bought the most rounds. With Coop, it was pretty much a tie. If one wanted a drink, the other got one, whether they wanted it or not. With a few others, it was usually Jay who ended up spending the most because she wanted shots or drinks and didn’t care if her companions were finished with their previous ones, she still got another round.
As long as it wasn’t beer, Jay would be perfectly fine to get up in the morning and get ready for the late night shoot that was planned. She’d done it before, gone drinking the night before a shoot and still managed to be her normal chipper self. Hell, she’d gone a few times with her boss and co-workers! Of the group the last time, Jay had been the only one to wake up as sober as before she’d started, with no headaches, hiccups, throw ups or need of greasy fast food. Once the drinks were placed on the bar top and Chloe handed over some bills, Jay picked up her glasses and lightly clicked it against Chloe’s. “To a good night ahead of us!” she called over the music before taking a big sip of the concoction in her good hand.

Leander and Chloe were close, but obviously they didn’t have the perfect relationship; what siblings did? He had little things that got on her nerves and she probably did more than enough to wind him up from time to time. It was just the way it worked out in any family dynamic. Tonight, she didn’t know what had happened before she had strolled on in to her brother’s apartment, but she had a feeling some habit or quirk of his had rubbed Jay the wrong way since she seemed to be more worked up than he was. The difference between the two brunettes though was that if it came down to it, Chloe could push her brother a little more without a massive backlash hitting her. She could even come up with stories to switch Leander’s sour mood around; the upside to keeping certain memories hidden from the overprotective man. He didn’t need to know everything Chloe did and she didn’t need him running around the city ready to kill someone with the deadliest of glares. “I think we should both thank our lucky stars that my dear brother doesn’t go clubbing.”
If he did then Chloe knew she’d have found herself in a whole heap of trouble time and time again for either her outfit or for flirting drinks from some guy she met. She was a good girl and didn’t sleep around the city like some of the girls did. However, she was twenty one, in good shape and had a bit of a flirty side to her that had only come out more since she started at NYU. Her morals might not have been the same as Leander’s or as strict, but the young girl still had them. Still, she knew one photograph or one slip would send him into a frenzy and imagine that his baby sister had been getting up to all kinds, when in fact Chloe had just been enjoying some harmless fun on a night out with friends. “Ah, but you’re forgetting one very crucial point; he’d have to catch me first and I can outrun Leander any day of the week.” Running might not have been one of the sports she did at college, but she still ran regularly to blow off some of the extra energy or stress she might have had at the end of a long day. Her brother wouldn’t be part of their conversation for much longer though once they were inside the Marquee and enjoying themselves. It seemed to her that it was exactly what Jay needed tonight after whatever had gone down already. Chloe laughed warmly, understanding exactly what her friend was talking about. She paused to readjust her shoes before carrying on with their conversation, the memories of out of hand men flooding back to her. “I think I might have to start saying that they can put their hands on me, once I put my hands on them.” It was something Chloe rarely did and would probably spare some schmuck from getting alcohol in his eyes. Plus, it ruined the night far too much once someone started getting grabby and Chloe didn’t like her nights out having the slightest moments of down in the middle of all the fun. She had a few classes tomorrow, but they were in the afternoon and they were the workshop classes where the students were pretty much just left to their own devices, the professor offering them guidance if they asked for it, or she spotted something that could be improved upon. Even in the unlikely chance that Chloe showed up rocking a hangover, it would hardly be noticeable and she could spend the afternoon either gathering inspiration and resources or ‘testing’ out a new idea; a sly trick to play when hangovers were biting the asses of the art students of the university. “And to not remembering a damn bit of it!” Chloe replied, taking a sip of her drink and sighing as the sweet cocktail reminded her of only good times.
