Reilly did not make friends easily. She never had done in her whole life and after the teenage years had sent her hurtling down the wrong track, Reilly was even more cautious about what company she kept these days; she didn’t want to find herself in a dark place with no one to help her out again. Still, her job at Planet Hollywood over the last year had helped her meet the people that could help her unwind after a very long day on the university campus. She didn’t phone home as often as her parents would probably like because she didn’t want to worry them, so really the staff at the restaurant were the closest she had to a family on this coast and she would do anything for them, even if the blonde girl never verbally expressed it.
She took up extra shifts during the summer months when she didn’t have any of her astrophysics classes to attend. However, today was one of her few days off from putting on the polite smile and dealing with the sometimes difficult customers that she served. Reilly didn’t like spending those few days doing nothing though. If she wasn’t doing housework or dragging her laundry down to the basement, she could usually be found at one of the gyms in the city where she could slip in an extra class of taekwondo or Jogo do Pau. Sometimes she might stay in and read a book or take a bath, but Reilly liked to be out and about in the city, taking in the life that she no longer took for granted after everything that had happened.
Today, she was meeting up with her boss, and friend, to grab some lunch and maybe do some casual shopping. Reilly could do with a new pair of boots, but shopping was something she only usually did when she was with company. She had never been a big fan of splurging out, but a girl did need some new accessories and glamour from time to time. So, she had plans to meet up with Penny after a long morning to herself, during which she reorganised her apartment, which grew cluttered whenever she had a hectic work schedule. She didn’t mind the mess, but seeing dust really bothered her, so keeping on top of everything was the simplest way to avoid mega spring cleaning in the middle of the night!
Once she slipped the polish and cloth back into the cupboard under the sink, Reilly moved to clean herself up and change out of her cleaning gear into something a little more presentable. She didn’t think that an old ripped sweater and some paint stained leggings were really the best choice for an afternoon in the city. The small blonde sent Penny a quick text message and then made sure that Billy and Stu had enough water and food to see them through the day, just in case Reilly didn’t get back until late. She knew Penny wanted a few new outfits for something, so they could end up turning the lunch into a dinner, too, if the girls got a little carried away. Grabbing a light blazer for a jacket, just in case, Reilly locked up and then made her way down to the garage where her car was safely tucked away each and every night. It wasn’t anything to look at, but it had served Reilly since she was eighteen and it got her from point A to B without too many problems, so it did the trick until Reilly had the money and the means to buy something better. Preferably a motorbike. As she started up the engine, the radio kicked in too, the loud rock CD blasting from the speakers as she pulled her car out onto the busy streets, making her way through the traffic towards the place where she was meeting Penny for coffee. Reilly thought that luck had to be on her side as she beat an angry business man into the final parking spot.
Hopping inside the small doughnut shop that she had learnt did some of the best and inexpensive coffee in the city, she saw Penny already standing in line and crossed over to her. “Well someone is right on time.”
She teased quietly with a small smirk. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Penny! WORDS! 758 OUTFIT! New York Glamour LYRICS! Lost In Stereo - - - All Time Low NOTES! <3

When Chase had invited Penny to DC with him for two weeks, she’d been excited and confused. They were friends, good friends, she thought but she also couldn’t help wondering if the young doctor had ulterior motives in asking the brunette linguist. There hadn’t been anything said outright to have her coming to this conclusion though, aside from slight hints of flirting, most of which she would admit were all her. Still, she really wanted to go and see where all those stories he told took place. They were leaving the next day and when Penny finally got around to starting her packing the night before, she’d realized she didn’t have as much nice things as she thought she had. Sure, there was plenty of black and white in her closet for the restaurant, but the things she wore off shift, weren’t something she wanted to wear the first time she met the sweet doctor’s parents and sisters.
So she called up the first person she could think of that she knew well enough to know didn’t splurge on herself unless she had company to make fun of clothes with; Reilly, co-worker and friend. Penny didn’t need an excuse or a friend to go shopping, but it helped to have someone there to say that dress should never have been made. She had called the night before, knowing since she made the schedule that it was Reilly’s day off and asked if she could tag along. She needed girl time and new clothes. Penny was thankful that Reilly didn’t already have plans and that after her childhood, she made friends fairly easy. The brunette spent the morning dancing more through her apartment than actually cleaning it or doing any of paperwork she’d taken home with her the night before.
Penny was walking out of the elevator of her building when her phone beeped with an incoming text. She grinned, replying quickly as she walked around the building to her mini cooper. Penny hated driving the busy city streets but it was faster than learning the subway system or spending a stupid amount of cash on a taxi when she was perfectly able to drive herself. She found a parking spot and thanked her lucky stars that she found one in the city at all. Penny grabbed her purse, slammed her car door and hit the locks before slipping into the coffee shop as people were leaving and stepping into line. She hadn’t been there long at all, only long enough to have a couple people file in behind her when she heard the familiar voice she was supposed to be meeting. “For once,” Penny said laughing. “It’s a good thing you’re here, I have no idea what you drink,” she added stepping up to the counter. She ordered her drink and pointed to Reilly to order hers as she took bills from her wallet.

Dating had been something Reilly hadn’t tackled since coming out of the hospital back in San Francisco. There had been one or two nights that she would prefer not to remember, but there hadn’t been a date as such. Really, there hadn’t been too many guys interested who were on the right side of sober for her to even consider it. She knew she sometimes gave off this cold and distant attitude now, but it was her way at keeping people from getting too close. Plus, guys seemed to have a thing against her dark sense of humour, even though Reilly saw it as a way of dealing with the secrets of her past.
Granted, if she did go on a date anytime soon, she didn’t think she’d need to hit the streets in search of a new outfit; her wardrobe was impossible to shut already and Rei had a quirk where the doors had to be closed before she could sleep at night so adding to it would only make the task harder. Besides, she preferred mixing and matching what she already had in there and she didn’t see the point in dressing up to make an effort if they were going to be disappointed once they saw what she wore on a daily basis when she wasn’t dressed for work. Still, she didn’t mind going shopping with Penny and offering her opinion on this mystery trip of her boss’ or the clothes she tried on. The girls might not always share the same style, but Reilly didn’t discriminate against anything just because she didn’t like it for herself.
Reilly ruffled her hair with her fingers as she slipped through the door of the coffee shop and could only smirk at Penny’s words. “And that is why we promise you that we have everything under control even when we’re rushed off our feet.”
She teased, though it really wasn’t the case. Usually moments like that came and went in a matter of moments and she didn’t think it worthwhile to bother Penny if she was busy; if someone wanted to complain then they could let Reilly know and so long as the feisty blonde could resist a snarky comment everything usually went along with ease. In the case that heavy sarcasm and brutal honesty did slip through her faulty filter the customers were usually too shocked to do anything other than shut up and then order their food. Luckily, it had only happened once or twice and it had been when Reilly had been on the worst side of a bad mood! She passed her order over to the barista and then turned back to Penny while he fumbled with the cups and the fancy machine. “So, what exactly is our plan and what exactly are you looking for? A girl just doesn’t have clothes.” Reilly raised her eyebrows just as their order was placed on the counter in front of them. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Penny! Penny had plenty of things in her wardrobe that she could probably bring with her. But she wanted to make a good impression and from what she could tell of her current choices, she would fall short. It didn’t matter that Chase had two sisters, so his parents would be used to some pieces but Penny didn’t want their first impression of her to be some club slut or bartender though she was basically one with the addition of being the one to file papers and tell people what to do. She didn’t think of this weekend as the dreaded “meet the parents” thing that it kind of was. She wasn’t Chase’s girlfriend, just his friend despite the light flirting that went on between the two.
There wasn’t much that went on in Planet Hollywood that Penny didn’t know about when she was there, even when she was stuck in her cozy, as in cramped office space. There were cameras, though she hardly remembered to look at them unless she could hear the ruckus from her office and wanted to check out the severity before making a personal appearance. But she had a good group of people working at the restaurant and she trusted them with the basic running of the place. They all knew their parts in the script. Though when the lights were out in the windows signalling they’d closed, the crew sort of turned into crazy people. Not that she minded; she was one of them. “You make it sound like I’m never around,” Penny said, rolling her eyes. There were some nights and shifts that she barely left her office, but those were usually days when she needed to really buckle down and get that paperwork done which she’d left sitting on her desk, gathering dust until the last possible moment. Penny liked being on the floor though; it kept her busier than sitting in her office doing that paperwork. She wasn’t going to miss that part of her job on her little vacation, she never did.
Penny bit the side of her bottom lip. There was a lot she felt like she needed to buy after looking in her closet. So far she had pyjamas and a dress out and ready to be packed; that was it. “Maybe I should tell you what I have and you can be the judge. When I started going through my things there was next to nothing… nice,” she said after a pause to find the right word. “I have plenty of club clothes, work clothes and gym clothes, but nothing…” She trailed off with a light shrug of her left shoulder. “No, I have a dress, and pyjamas and a couple bathing suits somewhere,” she added, snapping her fingers before accepting her coffee and finally passing over the green notes. She pushed the door open, holding it with her hip for Reilly. “What does one wear to meet parents of a guy you’re not dating?” she asked, shaking her head as they walked down the street in the general direction of the shops.

The Russian blonde was sometimes baffled by the “dramas” of her friends. When it came to clothes, Reilly’s style hadn’t changed all that much from her teenage years, even though her personality was much calmer for the most part now. She still loved her mini-skirts and boots and it took quite a few people by shock when she revealed that she was an astrophysics student to them. Far too many people had stereotyped the sciences into being full of carbon copies of The Big Bang Theory cast when it wasn’t always the reality. There were some people who would probably have a panic attack around their crush still, but Reilly was pretty sure she could find one of them in every class if someone assigned her the challenge of doing so; anxiety wasn’t reserved for stereotypical geeks and nerds and she knew that better than most, though again, to look at her no one would suspect it. The only thing Reilly had that noticeable hinted at any sort of accident was the scarring across her left hand, though people didn’t immediately jump to the conclusion that the burn mark there opened up the Pandora’s Box she worked hard to keep sealed.
Luckily, she had work to keep her mind off of such things. There were still days when her mood turned sour and she longed to punch someone she either worked with or served, but Reilly seemed to handle those days well, with quiet and short trips out back whenever she needed a moment to herself. Reilly smirked and then flicked her light eyes back across to Penny. “You should see your face when you come out of that office sometimes; I’m pretty certain the kids wish you weren’t there.”
There had only been a few events where their silly antics had led to some almighty crash that pulled Penny from the depths of her office, but Reilly usually had to bite back a grin when it happened. There were the usual looks of blame being passed along the younger staff members and the chefs were normally yelling something from the kitchen, too; though she was sure that they just did that to try and make the scene more dramatic than it actually was. Reilly listened to her friend summarise her wardrobe and the problem she appeared to be having. She didn’t have to think for very long to realise that she had never been in this position herself. In fact, she couldn’t recall a single situation which was even remotely similar to this and she couldn’t resist a moment of humour as she raised the coffee cup to her lips. “Spandex and glitter?” She suggested, an amused twinkle shining from her green eyes. The Russian let out a short laugh and then shrugged, not understanding what the big fuss was all about. “Look, if he’s not your boyfriend then why put all this effort in? There’s nothing wrong with what you’re wearing now! Unless, of course, you are trying to impress someone…?” She arched her eyebrow and smirked, keeping her eyes fixed on the brunette by her side so that she could read her reaction better. If this trip was no big deal and as casual as Penny kept trying to play it off as, then she wouldn’t be freaking out now and Reilly didn’t need to be smart or sober to work that one out. Penny didn’t have those issues with guys or relationships, usually. Of course, she also didn’t date on a regular basis. Too much of her childhood scarred her from putting her heart out on that line and waiting for it to get broken again. She’d had her fun in college, but that, to her was different; she didn’t have her heart involved in those flings. In high school, she’d made the mistake of falling for a boy who used to tease her relentlessly as a child. She should have known better and at first, things had been going really well. And then they realised who she really was, and that was when he started teasing her again. He thought he was being playful, being cute, but remembering those names he had called her once upon a time and calling her them again, she couldn’t take. It killed her hearing those petty names again and she’d walked away. It was better in the long run; she hadn’t been able to see much of a future with him from the beginning.
That had been her mistake, and it was in the past now. Chase wasn’t those terrible kids she’d grown up with. He was different from them; he was actually nice. And he cared, for his friends, his family, complete and utter strangers. Penny had never met a man quite like him before, which had made her want to get to know him better. He was a little awkward, like he didn’t quite know what to say or do, but he was a sweetheart. Penny had seen him before, speaking with one of his older patients. She’d been down the hall, visiting a long term patient who had no family visitors at all and only the occasional friend. Dear Mrs. Addams had been feeling tired so Penny had left her to nap and while she was walking back down the hall with the intention of grabbing some coffee before heading over to the children’s wing but she heard his voice, more, his laugh and it had stopped her. She shouldn’t have been eavesdropping but he sounded so happy, it made her laugh. And when he’d caught her outside the door she invited him along for the coffee if he could spare the time. It was a silly thing, but also one of her fondest memories from her volunteer hours.
Penny rolled her eyes. She was around the restaurant a hell of a lot more than half her staff but being stuck in her office so much, it really did seem like she wasn’t there at all at times. It wasn’t her fault, if she could, she would be on the floor. But that just wasn’t the case a lot of the time. She hated, really. But what could she do aside from step down, get a significant drop in her paycheck and be a bartender or waitress? She did those bits when they were understaffed some nights. And when she left the restaurant, it would be to bigger and better things than what she was doing now. Soon enough, she would get there, but just not yet. “They may as well pretend I’m not for the amount of time I’ve spent on the floor lately,” she said, sighing. She had too much to do before she left so Reilly or anyone else wouldn’t be stuck with it all while she was enjoying the country’s capital.
“If spandex and glitter were appropriate, I’d be set for a lifetime of meeting parents, or anyone for that matter,” she said dully. The funny part of it all, Penny wasn’t thinking about who they were, in the political sense. She was only thinking they were Chase’s parents and she wanted them to like her because she really, really liked their son. And she wanted them to know she wasn’t a terrible person or a worse influence of any kind, despite working in a restaurant that was more bar after eight pm. She was a good person with high hopes of doing something with the knowledge she had. Sighing, Penny gulped down half the cooling coffee in her hands, having forgotten she was carrying it.
“Don’t be stupid, of course I’m trying! Man needs to open his eyes! I’ve tried everything I could think of short of just pushing him against the closest available vertical surface and kissing him silly,” she admitted easily enough. And it was true; she thought she’d tried everything short of being blunt. She didn’t know what else to do to get him to see she was interested in him. Nothing short of time would get him to see. So she would give him that. But no one said she had to do that wearing frumpy clothes. And this shopping trip wasn’t just about finding clothes for this vacation, though that was part of it. Penny loved shopping but hated doing it alone. Though she did have to look down at what she was wearing when the comment Reilly made finally hit home; she couldn’t remember what she was wearing. “And for once, there’s nothing wrong with this. There’s not even the makings of a hole in these jeans!” But this outfit didn’t scream it’s nice to meet you, parents of the man I’m school girl crushing on.

Reilly hadn’t dated in the last few years. Since the trouble that had come from dating Roman and the problems that had emerged from that relationship and the memories that she had unconsciously repressed, it just seem safer all around. She wasn’t comfortable opening up to the people she could call friends now and it seemed even more unlikely that she could open up and relax around else. All it would take would be the wrong question or a remark and Reilly could snap, turning on whomever it was taking a risk on a girl like her. Maybe one day things would be different and she could find someone who she felt could understand, but until then it was easier to have the life she lived now; a few meaningless nights here and there with people too drunk to ask questions or care about the answers. She was guarded for good reason, in her opinion, though her family didn’t agree and constantly questioned her about why she insisted on pushing people away. Reilly had tried explaining it to them when she was still living in San Francisco, still recovering from everything, but they didn’t seem to grasp what she meant. The people she had felt the closest to and those who she thought she could trust had been the first to turn their backs and abandon her when she needed them the most; Reilly didn’t want that to happen again and it was simply easier to just keep people from getting too close in the first place.
“They already do; don’t worry about that.”
Reilly teased, keeping a straight face like she usually did when she was being sarcastic. She usually knew that Penny was camped out in the office most nights, but Reilly rarely felt the need to poke her head around that door to ask for assistance. Normally, they did have things in hand on the floor and even when it did get busy, the staff were able to be serious and get through the tables and the orders quickly enough to keep on top of everything out there. Plus, Reilly despised having to ask for help since she had quite the stubborn streak running through her. There hadn’t been any major incidents out there so far since Reilly had been hired at the restaurant and she doubted that anything overly dramatic would ever take place either. They had their comical moments, but they were far from mimicking a sitcom. Brushing the unruly hair away from her face again, Reilly smirked and let out a wistful sigh. “Glitter and spandex should always be appropriate. Every day would look like Lady Gaga’s imagination.” She said, sipping from her coffee mug before glaring at the back of the businessman who nudged his way past her in the hurry to get to wherever the hell it was he thought he was so important. “DC is a totally different place to anywhere else though. I mean, what’s acceptable there? What have you seen in Chase’s wardrobe?” She queried, never having been to Washington before. However, from everything she had seen about the Capitol city, she could only assume that it was quite a serious place to be and somewhere she could never really call a home. By now, she was too used to the free-spirits of New York and ‘Frisco. “Perhaps you should try the closest available horizontal surface instead.” Reilly suggested, a cheeky grin on her face to match the mischievous twinkle in her eyes. “Or you could just invite him over and open the door in lingerie. I’m pretty certain that even the most clueless of guys might get the hint then.” She shrugged her shoulders and sipped from her coffee again. Reilly still thought Penny was overthinking this a little too much, but then she had no idea who this young doctor was, aside from seating him a few times when he was waiting for Penny at the restaurant. A thought suddenly sparked through her mind and she put her hand out to grab Penny’s shoulder, stopping the brunette for a short moment. “Wait, before we go and you spend all your money on a sexy new wardrobe that is also parent appropriate, are we sure that Chase is actually straight?” It would make for a hilarious tale if he wasn’t, but she didn’t want Penny to have to find that out the hard way by embarrassing herself. It wasn’t like she spent all her time in her office, Penny did other things but getting ready for this trip had her in there more than she would have liked. But it was her job and she enjoyed it. She didn’t have to do much of anything at the shop she worked in high school, she smiled pretty and sold people what they were looking for. A monkey could have done her high school job, and if her bosses could have afforded it, monkeys probably would have been working instead. But they hired the next best thing than monkeys, teenagers. And in a small town like Lafayette where there were only two schools in the actual town limits, everyone knew everyone so work was more of a chance to hang out, catch up and get paid for it. “So glad I won’t be missed,” Penny said blandly, giving her dark orbs a roll. When the restaurant was going through a slow minute or two, it was like the old days when they could really just stand around and catch up on each other’s lives.
“You, Lady Gaga herself and that poor woman’s stylist are the only ones who think so,” she said grinning. Penny was all for some glitz and glam but she couldn’t pull it off every single day. She liked the woman’s music but some of her style choice left Penny shaking her head and asking what that girl was thinking when she put this or that on. Laughing, Penny rolled her eyes. “What have you seen when he’s been at the restaurant? Suits, suits, oh and did I mention suits? I don’t think I’ve ever seen the man in a pair of shorts or running shoes now that I think about it,” Penny said though she hardly put much effort into thinking back far enough to remember his wardrobe every time she saw him.
The brunette looked up at her blonde friend with mischief in her eyes. “I didn’t want to be presumptuous,” she said as innocently as she could. Reilly’s mischievous personality was infectious. Whenever Penny found herself in the company of the Russian girl, she always felt just a little wicked than before. “Now, there’s an idea. Maybe we should stop at Victoria’s Secret, too,” she said, laughing. Penny knew better than to start taking a sip of her drink whenever Reilly started talking. You never knew what would come out of that girl’s mouth next. And Penny knew that, she was well aware and yet she still started to sip her coffee, hoping that just this once she would say something that wouldn’t have the brunette choking on a laugh, or worse; her coffee. She was wrong. Coffee went in, Reilly’s words came out, and the coffee was forced down her throat so she wouldn’t spit it all over the jacket of the three piece suit passing them by. Unable to do anything else, Penny coughed through the burning feeling in her throat and lungs. Laughter followed when she could breathe well enough for it to sound like laughter and not wheezing. “Chase is not gay!” She said when she knew she could speak clearly. And ignoring that not so subtle jab, it wasn’t like Penny really needed an excuse to shop. It was practically its own sport for the brunette.

Working in a restaurant as busy as Planet Hollywood probably wasn’t the wisest choice for someone with a finite amount of patience and who preferred working alone. However, Reilly had taken what had been available when she had made the coastal swap and the staff there was a pretty decent bunch. Some of the customers didn’t have the same thing going for them, but Reilly had a late night class at the gym for such occasions. Give the young woman a few more years and smiling politely and taking orders would be the last things she would be doing, although she didn’t have any plan in mind for her future. There were dreams and wonderful fantasies of Reilly’s ideal life, but she didn’t share them with others out of the fear of failing. “I’ll make sure we leave you a pretty mess to clean up when you get back.”
Reilly teased, although in all seriousness she would be the last person running around in a panic if something did go wrong. She was likely to throw a cloth at someone else and make them deal with it. “You should see most of ‘Frisco on a Saturday night…” Reilly mumbled, exaggerating the reality of her American hometown. She had lost the traces of her native accent long ago, but she was just as fluent in Russian as she had been the day she stepped off the plane. “He is a doctor.” She pointed out, flicking her hair from her eyes again and silently hoping that she had a pack of bobby pins in the bottom of her bag. From her own experiences the only time she had caught doctors in casual attire had been when they were trying to ‘connect’ with patients during group sessions. Reilly hadn’t benefitted much from those, so in her head doctors were only complete with suits, white coats and clipboards. “Sometimes it’s the way to go.” She gave a half shrug and an impish smirk. Reilly didn’t do the subtle flirting or spend hours reading into lines used. She preferred to be outright and forward, even if it scared people off. At the end of it all, if they wanted to run then she was only avoiding a crash and burn a little further down the line. The astrophysicist wasn’t looking for a relationship though, and all of her dates – when she had them – were casual and fun and often had no heavy suggestions of white dresses, cute houses or anything else that connoted settling down. “There’s always an excuse for Victoria Secret; even if there isn’t a man involved.” The blonde agreed, knowing that her own collection was probably close to bursting her drawer. It wasn’t like she was some seductress by night; Reilly just appreciated matching sets and nice things to wear beneath her clothes. It added a little more to the mystery! Plus, with the amount of off-the-shoulder and sheer tops the blonde owned she needed decent bras to compliment her outfits! “I’m just making sure we had it cleared up before this whole fiasco turned into something worthy of a CBS sitcom.” Reilly said, playing the innocent even though she was grinning like the cat that had got the cream at her brunette friend’s reaction to her little question. Sometimes it was just far too tempting to catch people off guard with little lines like that and Reilly never tired of seeing how they reacted.
