It wasn’t common for Kai to actually have a day off from work when he didn’t already have plans. Normally he arranged to take Theodora-Kaia off Astrid’s hands, but the little girl was at school and Astrid already had the afternoon off work thanks to a shift swap with another of the nurses at the hospital. It left him with an afternoon free after a morning of errands and his usual gym workout that came with most mornings in the twenty-eight year old’s life. He might not have been in the Navy anymore, but he still worked out like he was. He didn’t see any excuse for slacking off, especially when he was in prime physical condition for his current job as a detective with the Brooklyn Special Victim Squad. He might not have been disposing of IEDs anymore, but Kai still had a purpose and people still needed him to look out for them and keep them safe.
It was kind of what he lived for and even when he wasn’t on the clock the tall New Yorker was still alert, his sharp blue eyes still taking in everything going on around him. He might have only been going down to the grocery store or picking up some extra treats for Theodora-Kaia, but he was still keeping his eyes peeled for any trouble. It wasn’t like there was an “off” switch for it either; he had been living this kind of protective lifestyle for the last ten years and it was more than just a habit by now. His sister was the only one who teased him about it these days and she was probably the only one who could get away with it without Kai taking offence.
An afternoon free though meant that Kai had to find something to fill the hours up with after he finally left the gym with a satisfying ache in his muscles. Most people would probably relish an afternoon of solitude, but Kai grew bored far too easily for a calm man. Usually, he had plans in advance with any of his old Navy friends on leave or old high school friends who happened to extend an invitation his way for a night at the comedy club. Obviously everyone else had a life when his slowed down, but Kai still had to keep busy. He even contemplated stopping by the precinct to check if they needed any help, but he knew his boss would probably have his head if he pulled anymore overtime this month. The young detective was already in the habit of staying late to finish paperwork or filling in shifts for other detectives on the squad when they needed the time off. It might have been generous of him and it did help the squad out most of the time, but his captain didn’t want Kai wearing himself down and had made a point of reiterating time and time again that the ex-EOD technician needed to take his allotted days off without excuse or complaint.
Eventually, after returning to his apartment with the loyal Tallak, Kai decided that he would just head out and find something to do in the city. He had lived in New York his whole life and while the city was a big place there had been countless ventures out during which he had run into some familiar faces. The places he went most were the same spots most of his friends and companions frequented, too. He found himself parking his car by Planet Hollywood and his feet were leading him towards the bar there. Kai didn’t drink, but he still enjoyed the atmosphere. He took a seat on one of the stools and ordered a soda and lime for the time being. The place was quiet for now, but it was still pretty early. If he didn’t see anyone he recognised, then at least he had still gotten away from his apartment, and his worrisome thoughts, for a few hours.

It wasn't too long ago that Koda tried to make things up with his girlfriend. She was apparently too pissed off at him, which sadly, made his moods worse. Usually the man smiled at work and patted peoples backs - making "gun puns" and having a good time though he was going into a battlefield full of danger. Next day at work? Silent. He almost looked like Tardarsauce the Grumpy Cat that day. He said a few words, got into his gear, and headed out into the truck to do the dirty work that the normal police officers couldn't handle. Though the days after that he seemed to lighten up some and actually smile a bit. That's right, he couldn't be down in the dumps forever. The next few days, Koda was almost back to his normal self in the precinct. Bridget would be her normal self when she was ready. And whenever she does, Koda will be waiting for her, for that's what people in relationships do; they wait and love. He so badly wanted to pick up where they left off... before this whole incident. But beggars couldn't be choosers. Nonetheless, Koda went to work but it was only short-lived. They had a lot of police officers in their scout cars already and the S.W.A.T. unit was just unnecessary right now. Though like most of the officers, one beep and they were called in. So, Koda left work early. Shifting out of his attire and into some more loose-fitting clothes, the man felt more relaxed. Thin clothing in the middle of June was godsend.
Some boot-cut jeans, some shoes and a t-shirt with one of those flannel jackets wrapped around his waist, he looked like the definition of the term "relaxed", just by attire alone. Stretching and cracking a few bones out on the front of the department, Koda soon got into his car and just drove back home. Or well he was heading home when a big sign that said Planet Hollywood made him think of Las Vegas. He hasn't been in one of these in forever. Doing a Michigan U, Koda drove the opposite way and soon turned into the Planet Hollywood's parking lot. This will be a little expensive, but Koda didn't care. It would have been much better if he was with someone but Koda didn't expect him to actually stop at any place like this. So he didn't ask anyone. He didn't even bother to call anyone. He'll just go treat himself for once. Maybe... Maybe he'd get himself a drink? The man didn't drink for usually one led to two and two to three and three led to the floor. Plus drunks just did weird things and he didn't want to be irresponsible. Though that didn't mean he avoided it at all costs. On special occasion he did drunk. Today... Ehh... Now that he thought about it... Maybe one small drink would do. Then a ice water to delude it more.
Upon arriving inside, Koda was just about to be seated by one of the waitresses when he saw a familiar face. Or well, a side of a face. Grinning and refusing the waitress, Koda walked over to the man and sat down next to him, "Hey partner." He spoke. Okay so they weren't really partners, but they worked in the same facility. Work friends, one can say. "So I guess this is where all the detectives hang out then? I can see why." When the bartender walked by Koda pondered for a bit when he asked what would he have, "A small Sangria. And a large iced water." Well that would complete his liquid order. As for food, he'd need to think about it for a little bit. He'd probably be cliche and get a cheeseburger or something. Looking over at Kai, Koda grinned, "So how's life treating you buddy? I haven't seen you in a while. Things going good on your end? Got any interesting stories to tell me?" Conversation starter...
OOC: Sorry this sucks, I'm a little depressed right now. Will fix the coding later...

Kai’s only glimpses into romance these days were with the dates Astrid often tried sending him on. The detective had lost track of the amount of conversations that she started with “There’s this great girl I know and I think you’ll really like her, too…” It was kind of funny to say the least, but his sister always looked disappointed when Kai didn’t schedule a follow up dinner or called the whole thing quits after a few casual dates. He was in no rush to settle down and the nagging that came from the females in his life did nothing to speed him along that path either! His job showed him too many broken homes, and he had been there to witness far too many families bury their husbands, boyfriends, fathers, brother and sons. Kai didn’t want to jump head first into something that could end so abruptly and he saw the looks of fear on the faces of those who did get a glimpse of his scars. He could never promise to come home every single day and he couldn’t promise that everything would have a happy ending; it wasn’t part of his nature and he had seen lives shattered for his whole adulthood.
The tall Norwegian worked hard to keep that out of his daily life though; his mom didn’t want to hear the stories of comrades he had watched die and his sister had battled demons of her own. His old mentor and captain had taught them well back when they were stationed far from home and staring at the horrors of war. Kai could keep all of it separate, most of the time, and he had never been driven to drink or drugs to make it through the darker hours. He was a strong character who kept his weaknesses guarded, but that didn’t make him cold or indestructible. There were friends who still teased him about his reaction to becoming an uncle and his emotions were usually pretty clear to those around him; Kai just kept the horror stories to himself and anyone who had been through what he had would understand and he knew the guys who he shared those moments with still did the same to this very day. Even together, sharing a drink or toasting a memory, they only spoke about the good times.
Kai hadn’t expected anyone from work to come in so soon after his own arrival. He had only raised the glass to his lips for the second time when the voice pulled him out of his thoughts. “Hey.”
He answered with a small smile. Kai might not be the most sociable of all the detectives at his precinct, but he still knew most of the names and faces from certain cases or the bars they all seemed to frequent after wrapping up another day. “Only when we’re on our days off.” Planet Hollywood never seemed to even crop up as a suggestion when they had just closed a case, but they all found themselves in one of the Irish bars with the worn pool tables that was about a block away from the precinct. However, when the guns were away and the badges not necessarily needed, Kai knew a few liked to step away from there and go somewhere more commercial where they weren’t reminded of their profession so much. He thought for a moment, taking another mouthful of his non-alcoholic beverage. “Nothing much to say, you know me; I’m a man of simple pleasures.” Recently things had been quiet. They had closed several cases, no one was hurt, no one had any exciting news. As a cop, it was probably a blessing, but some people found that it sounded dull when Kai’s life wasn’t as action packed at television shows suggested it would be. “What about you?” [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! The man wouldn't lie, this would be great with someone but whatever... He should treat himself and relax a bit. Though he wasn't a big fan of alcohol, he was debating on having just one drink. Preferably one that was fruity, almost 'girly'. Sue him for being slightly careful. He screwed up once in the past and the man was just weary of the drink, though didn't refuse it all in its entirety. Plus, this place had great good. Little unhealthy but he was a very fit man with a high metabolism, this wouldn't bother him. Treat himself. Relax. That was his goals. So he went here. Pulled in, got out, went inside. He would have gotten a booth by the window or a table on the main floor, but instead the man made his way to the bar. Taking a seat, he was about to order when he noticed a familiar face. One could say that started to make him a little cheery than what he was feeling then.
The man greeted Koda with a hey and a small smile, it just made Koda's own increase a bit. Ordering his drink when the bartender came, Koda leaned on the bar counter and looked over at his friend, one that he hasn't seen in a bit. Work? Most likely. Being a detective wasn't easy and very time consuming to say the least. “Not working today I see. Well that's good. Overtime is nice but, heh, sometime it's nice to have a break once in a while.”
When his drink arrived, Koda took in in his hands and took a few sips of it. Yeah, that tasted good alright. When Koda spoke and heard his reply the man arched a brow. “Yeah you are but did you do anything exciting recently? Maybe job wise?” He questioned, sipping some more of his Sangria. When Kai asked about him, Koda shrugged, “Besides my girlfriend problem, I'm doing alright. Been a little stressed but things are getting better,” Or well, he hoped, “I'm also thinking of breeding my Hound. You know, so I have a piece of him all the time. Ha.” Drinking a bit more of his drink. Koda asked if he could have food here as well; order. The bartender said yeah so Koda ordered himself a cheeseburger and fries. Normal sloppy American meal. “Have anything planned today?”

Sometimes Kai just enjoyed the atmosphere of places like this and if he ended up drinking and dining alone then he would still be happy enough. Getting out, getting away from his apartment and from work helped him to de-stress and forget about all the problems and cases that he had been working on that week. With everything else done on this free day, it seemed like hanging out here was probably his best choice since he didn’t fancy the drive out to Long Island for a short visit with his parents. His mom would only fuss and worry and he didn’t fancy spending the few short hours reassuring her that he wasn’t about to drop dead or walk into a hail of bullets. Swirling the soda around in the glass, Kai took another long swig of it and smacked his lips together. He’d never felt the appeal of alcohol, even after the worst of days; he’d rather run or punch it off at the gym.
Work essentially consumed Kai’s life; it always had done. When he was an EOD Technician, Kai had basically lived for the job because it was what he was supposed to do. It was a hard habit to break, even now, and it took the stern words of his boss to keep him from showing up for the extra shifts and the hours of overtime the detective was already renowned for with the SVD. He wanted to make a good impression and he wanted to clean up the streets of dangerous criminals, but sometimes he forgot that he also had himself to take care of, too. “Ja, or else they tell you to keep far away until your next scheduled shift.”
His Norwegian slipped through habitually, but Kai just smiled and shook his head. It was the reason he hadn’t spent his free time today catching up on the paperwork that was organised in the trays on his desk. Kai took a moment to think about it. What most people thought to be dangerous or interesting was just the daily life in the eyes of the tall twenty-eight year old. “It’s just been the same old stuff, really. Closed two cases, arrested three guys for trafficking…You know how it is.” He said with a casual shrug, not wanting to disclose details of a case outside of the precinct. “Glad to hear that things are getting better.” The stresses of the job and the personal lives of the cops he knew never always went hand in hand. There were complications and problems all the time, but whatever the outcome was, it could only be for the best. Things might get bad for a brief period, but he had seen even those who fell the farthest had help to get back on their feet from their surrounding NYPD family. “Not anymore. Everything I needed to do today is done.” He didn’t waste time or spend free hours dawdling about. It had never been in Kai’s nature. “You?” [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Koda <3 WORDS! 541 OUTFIT! Dapper Detective! LYRICS!
