Devon had to admit that with everything life had thrown at her recently, a day on the beach would be nice. She had a weekend away from the assigned uniform and the text message that woke her up that sunny Saturday morning had been a shorthand reminder that she couldn’t “forget” about her promise to be down on the sand by lunchtime. Still, she could think of a million worse ways to spend a June afternoon and rolled from her bed after firing back a quick reply. Humming her way through her morning routine and quick shower, Devon wrapped it up by grabbing Atticus’ lead and waiting for the dog to come bounding towards the door. He was not the tiny little puppy she had bought from the pet store anymore, but growing into quite the large Labrador who took up considerable room at the foot of her bed most nights.
During the brisk walk with the excited dog, Devon grabbed a bagel and iced coffee from one of the Central Park vendors. She had no errands to run that day, so she kept Atticus out in the park for a little longer than normal, letting the dog chase the Frisbee she was throwing across the lush grass for him. She sent a few texts to Fallon to see if her friend was having a fun time out in Nebraska with Gabe and then checked the time. Once Atticus was back on the lead she headed back to her apartment and grabbed one of the bags from her room to pack with the necessary things; beach towel, sun block, water bottle and iPod. Then, she slipped out of her walking clothes and changed into something a little more suited to the beach, tying the halter securely around her neck and snapping some hair ties around her wrist. Letting her blue eyes settle on the clock once more, she realised it was probably time to leave and then tossed her phone into the bag before sliding it up onto her shoulder and grabbing her keys to lock up, commanding Atticus to behave before she left the small apartment she called her home.
She hadn’t been to the beach in quite some time thanks to work and the other social plans in her life. She had good memories of being down here when she was younger, but they all seemed so long ago as she made her journey away from the busy heart of the city and moved closer to the water. Parking her car, Devon checked the keys were safe in her bag before moving closer to the steps to the sand, pausing only to slip her sneakers off and into her hands; she hated getting sand out of her shoes. The beach might have been a big place and there were plenty of people around, but it didn’t take her more than a few minutes to pick out a familiar face just a few yards further down the sand. “Hey there, CSI.”
She teased, bumping his shoulder as she reached him. “So, is there a plan or is it one of those turn up and see what happens days?” She joked, slipping her sunglasses up from her eyes where they found their second use as a temporary hairband to keep the blonde locks from her face. Bryson woke that morning with a groan and a pillow tossed over his head again, wishing he could sleep in but his day was full. After taking a moment to tell his pillow how much he hated plans, the CSI rolled out of bed and went through his usual morning routine; shower, shave, teeth and hair. After he got dressed, Bryce wasted no time getting the leash clipped to Scotty’s collar, shoving his wallet in one pocket, phone in another and keys in his free hand until he was on the other side of his apartment door, then he shoved them into his pocket. He had plans of meeting up with Tristan and passing along his faithful pet to his nephew for the rest of the day and night. There was a group work thing at the beach and he couldn’t miss it. He had no excuses to miss it since he couldn’t claim being swamped with work; his boss would know.
Pet and owner walked through the bustling city streets to the park for the long way around to the other side where his nephew had a pickup game of basketball going with a bunch of school teammates. He stopped for a cup of coffee at a vendor cart and continued on, taking a seat on a bench when he got to the courts. When the game finished, the three walked to a small café a few blocks down with a nice outdoor seating area. Uncle and nephew spoke, made plans and after an hour, Bryce handed over his dog’s leash and said bye for another day. He didn’t know how long the thing that afternoon would take so he wanted to be prepared in case it went along farther than he’d thought. Bryce hailed a taxi to take him back home where he grabbed what he would need for the day and hopped into his own car and drove out to the water’s edge.
Bryce found a free spot, parked and grabbed his towel after hiding his wallet away in his car. He found a clear space on the beach and dropped his towel, spreading it out before standing up again and adjusting his sunglasses on his nose. He was slipping off his sandals when a familiar voice called out. He turned as Devon approached. “Officer,” he said back with a grin. Bryce set his forearm on Devon’s shoulder, using her as a leaning post. “I’m thinking it’s a “see what happens day”. But there’s all sorts of law enforcement here,” he said indicating quite a few people surrounding them. He could easily point out a half dozen or more of the city’s finest first responders that he knew.

The beach certainly brought back a number of good memories for Devon and just the feel of the warm sand beneath her toes was enough to bring a smile to her lips. She had no real idea what today was supposed to be about, but she had heard some of her colleagues talking about the previous years and they all had jokes to share with the newer recruits of the NYPD who had still been finding their feet when this had happened before. Devon had come a long way since then, but today wasn’t about looking back on her rookie days or even thinking about the memories that came flooding back once she stepped on the sand with the worn sneakers in her hand. It was about the NYPD, team work and having a day of friendly jibes and rivalry.
She dropped her bag to the sand and left it there for a moment while she let her blue eyes scan the rest of the scattered law enforcement teams out of the attire she was used to seeing them in. Aside from grabbing a few beers after a long day with some of her fellow officers, Devon only hung out with a handful of the people surrounding her, though she knew the names and recognised the faces of most. Glaring at Bryce’s arm and then moving her gaze slowly upwards until it reached his face, Devon arched her eyebrow challengingly. “Seriously?”
She asked, gesturing to his idea of her as a leaning post. “I will bite you and then drop you.” She mock threatened. By now she was used to Bryce casually pulling these silly stunts with her and her threats often led to more playful banter than her actually acting upon them, but that didn’t stop the tiny blonde officer from protesting each time, just like it didn’t stop him from doing it each time. “Aha, let’s see someone try to organise this lot.” She chuckled, crossing her arms for a moment as she scanned across the faces for anyone who looked like they might have been in charge. She was sure there was some structure and someone knew what was happening, but she was clueless and whenever she had asked the uniformed officers she saw on a daily basis they just shrugged and said most of it was arranged on the day. Stooping down, Devon arranged her towel on the sand and then reached for her bottle of sunscreen as she stood back up again and pulled the baggy sweater over her head and threw it down where the rest of her things were. “Need any?” She asked, glancing at Bryce as she slapped the cool lotion onto her arms. She figured it was best to get this over and done with now before anything actually began and she forgot until the painful tightness of red, burnt skin reminded her. She might not be here to tan or lounge, but she definitely didn’t want to turn into a lobster with her work colleagues around her and then have to push through the following week with a restrictive uniform and jackass jokes! Bryce had always been working when this weekend came through having picked up a particularly annoying or difficult case just before the beach day shenanigans. So he couldn’t participate but this year, he wasn’t given the option. He had no cases piling up on his desk, no work he needed to be in the lab for and no actual shift scheduled for the day; he was completely free. Bryce had always enjoyed his time at the beach, he had plenty of fond memories of the days he’d spent stretched out on the sand or in the water splashing the friends he’d gone with; though his beach trips usually took him out of the country or to the other coast.
The CSI had heard plenty of stories about the time at the beach that was set up every summer but he could never get a straight answer from anyone. It was just one of those things that you had to be there for. Bryce looked down at Devon with a cheeky grin. “Yes, seriously,” he said, checking his hip lightly into Devon’s. “You’re the perfect height for it.” He couldn’t help but add to the teasing and it was always easy to joke around with Devon. There were plenty of people on the job that couldn’t seem to break away from the serious side of things. Bryce honestly didn’t know how they managed to stay sane when they couldn’t joke or lighten up. He knew their jobs were serious but they needed some levity to get through the day. Subtle jabs and jokes, a little flirtatious chatter, anything to get through the day without going insane. “Oh, I’d like to see you try it and stay on your feet,” Bryce said looking about as serious as this day was turning out to be. “Because if I go down I am so taking you with me.”
There were a few names and faces in the crowd on the beach that Bryce knew, had worked with on too many scenes. “I don’t even know who’s supposed to be in charge of this mess,” he said honestly, looking out at the crowd and raising his hand in return to a few close enough to shout to. It always amused him to see his fellow men and women in uniform dressed down. It happened to rarely that seeing them in swimwear or even casual jeans and a t-shirt had him tossing back and worth taunts and teasing remarks. “Yeah, actually,” he said, pulling his shirt over his head and letting it drop to his towel. “Do my back?” he asked with a wicked grin on his face, turning away from Devon. “I’ll do yours,” he offered over his shoulder, preparing for any smack that might be coming his way with the playful tone.

Before now, Devon had been a little too invested in getting herself noticed by the higher powers of the NYPD. In her early days of wearing the uniform, she had taken every spare shift she could, pulling the doubles without even thinking twice about it. It paid off, got her the recognition she needed to continue to prove herself, but now that she was a familiar face she had more people willing to interfere if she mentioned working any extra patrols. Without her friends she would probably be a workaholic; they dragged her away, made her socialise and reminded her that she still had a life to live. Today seemed to be one of those days, including the fact that a few of her colleagues had accused her of deliberately dodging this event, which led to an “are you chicken?” challenge that Devon was not about to lose.
Pretending to look offended, Devon scoffed and rolled her light blue eyes. “I’m glad to hear that I have one appealing quality. Clearly, I got into the wrong profession, but there just wasn’t a huge demand for human leaning posts.”
Her words dripped heavy with sarcasm and she kept up the same bored tone throughout her little ramble. The tiny blonde was used to having people towering over her and she was just as used to the jokes about how little she was, so by now the turn to sarcasm was an instinctive response and she barely had to think twice about doing it. Really, the jokes and the chatter kept her from losing her mind some days. Raising her eyebrow, she looked up at Bryce with a mischievous twinkle in her eye. “Is that a challenge I hear? Because you of all people should know that I can’t resist a challenge.” Threateningly, she kicked lightly at his leg, already knowing that he wouldn’t even wobble from it. She just wanted to let him know that she would do it, just to see what the outcome was and who ended up with a face full of sand before the fun and games even began. Shrugging lightly, Devon let the worry vanish. “I’ll wait until I hear someone holler Walker at me.” She decided, knowing it would be pointless to try and seek out an answer now when everyone was still scattered about and most were still only arriving. She gave him a bland look as he shot her a wicked grin, but said nothing. Instead she poured the lotion on her hand and then slapped it against his back, just hard enough for him to notice it wasn’t just an accident. She rubbed the rest of the lotion in, making sure Bryce was covered. “Done.” She declared, pinching his side playfully before handing him the bottle and turning around, pulling her long hair over her shoulder and out of the way. “Be gentle with me, I bruise easily.” She joked, knowing it to be completely untrue as she threw him a smirk and a playful wink.
