Fae despised boats, but she had to take this ferry trip. She was doing an extra film and media course for a small part of the summer. She didn’t need to do it to pull up her grades or anything like that, but it had sounded interesting and someone like Fae often needed to occupy as much time as possible with practical things. She just wasn’t overly keen on the fact that her assignment for the six week programme involved her taking a trip on the ferry. She had slipped overboard from a small sailing boat when she was a little girl and since then she had hated being on the water. Fae was content to swim and fine whenever she was at the beach, but she did not like being on boats at all. It brought out a more fearful side to the young girl and Fae wasn’t a fan of it. The motion over the waves also made her feel a little less than comfortable and she was happy that she had decided to pass on grabbing a late breakfast with her neighbour that morning.
She was trying to keep her mind off of pretty much everything by keeping her hands busy. She checked the small video camera in her bag a couple of times and then left it alone once she realised that it would only eat away at the battery life. She had a spare with her, just in case, but Fae had no idea of what she’d even think about shooting out there today. She just needed a few landscape shots for a voice over to accompany, but she wanted to scope out the best views and get them recorded all in the one day so that she wouldn’t have to make this uncomfortable trip again. Glancing around at the rest of the passengers, Fae noticed that some were tourists and others were commuters. It was easy enough to tell them apart and her trained eyes could pick out those who were more vulnerable. Fingers itching, Fae took a deep breath and closed her eyes. She knew one way to definitely keep her mind off of the ferry, but she was adamant that she wouldn’t resort to it. Unlike her past addictions, this was one she couldn’t ignore so easily. It was in her blood, as far as Fae was concerned, and after being raised in the lifestyle it seemed almost impossible to turn her back on it and make that fresh start completely unmarred.
Running her fingers through the loose blonde waves of her hair, Fae opted for another glance around the crowds. She readjusted her bag so it sat neatly in her lap and then leaned forward to try and clear her mind. Why the professor had insisted on heading out this way she would never understand, but having been raised to never expose a weakness Fae hadn’t considered explaining her phobia of boats. It didn’t matter the shape or the size, she just hated them all. It also didn’t help that the rocking motion set her stomach churning. She knew she wasn’t actually going to be sick, but at the same time she was still feeling pretty lightheaded by it all. Something either needed to come along and take her mind off of everything, or this ferry needed to reach its destination in the next five minutes. If not, Fae wasn’t sure what she was going to do.
