Camping had been as much a part of Gabe’s life as the books and the animals. Even when he was a tiny, skinny kid with crazy hair and glasses too big for his face he could remember adventures in the woods and tales around a campfire long after the sun had set. As he had grown older they had turned from family trips to ones with friends, but the love for the outdoors was still there. Considering how much time Gabe spent in a library, it was probably necessary for him to spend a weekend camping every couple of months, just to remind his system what fresh air, trees and dirt really felt like. He knew his Pi Kappa Phi brothers and probably even Fallon would glare at him if he confessed that he much preferred the muddy, pine scented woods over the warm sand of the Californian beaches.
He didn’t want there to be anything left behind or forgotten about. Gabe double-checked the sturdy and not-so-light hiking backpacks he had packed. Everything was set by the front door and Evan was dropping them off closer to the old trail, but then they’d be on their own for two nights. The weather was set to stay clear and warm, but Gabe had made sure with the help of his Gramps that provisions were there for every situation. Even he had to laugh when Edward appeared with a hefty looking first-aid kit which he put in Fallon’s slightly lighter bag while making a comment about how they’d definitely need it. Once he was sure that everything was there and the mental checklist had been ticked over twice more, Gabe moved back through the house to the kitchen where he had left Fallon in the capable hands of his mom. Both women seemed to be right where he had left them, chatting at the table with coffee mugs and a variety of cookies in front of them. “Ready when you are. And Evan is. Where is he?”
Gabe wandered off again, this time out the back door to find his eldest brother. Once he had located the missing Fitzpatrick, Gabe tossed the things into the car and then leaned against the side of the vehicle, running his fingers through his hair while Fallon came out and Evan finished talking to their mom. “This one usually walks to the trail, but it’s almost a seven mile walk from here to the trail and then the trail to the camp is another three to five, depending on what spot he’s picked.” Evan told Fallon as he started the engine up and eased the car off the gravel drive. “I bet he’s picked the one with the best view of the stars.” Evan was aiming to tease Gabe, but the scholar’s dark eyes and his mind were fixed on the Nebraska scenery passing by the window. Fallon was loving being in Nebraska. Despite the awkwardness at the beginning of their trip, things turned out well. And Fallon simply adored Gabe’s mom. Being on the farm was a treat for Fallon since she’d hardly had a stationary childhood. Stable it might have been but it was hardly something a child should have gone through. And being on the farm showed Fallon a bit of what she had missed. She wasn’t sad that she’d missed, after all how many people out there could really say they grew up like she had? But it was nice to be experiencing it all now, the small chores she had to help Gabe with and everything else. She loved sitting around with his mom and gossiping about years gone by and how all her children were as they got older. Most of all and she knew Gabe would get it; it was just nice to have a mom figure around. In twenty six years, that was one thing Fallon had never had. There had always been older women around to help through the rocky times of growing up when Trevor had absolutely no idea what to do but there had never been a real constant there.
As much as the blonde professor enjoyed spending time around the farm with Gabe’s family, she was really looking forward to the couple of days they were spending camping. She’d never been camping; not properly with food cooked over the open fire, sleeping in sleeping bags. The times she and Trevor went camping, it was for a movie the studio was working on and they had trailers and a couple times cabins. If she had ever fallen asleep outside under the stars, she was quickly carried to her bed the trailer. Even when she’d spent “nights” on the beach with friends and bonfires, she woke up on the top deck of the house; which she hardly considered camping. She was reminiscing and laughing about the last time she camped with Gabe’s mom when he came in. “Time to cross “real camping” off the bucket list, I guess,” Fallon said laughing standing to put her empty mug in the sink. “I’m taking a couple of these with me though, I don't know what I'm getting myself into and this might be my last good meal in a couple days,” she joked, picking up a couple cookies from the dish and waving to Esme who was still shaking her head at Fallon’s “poor childhood”. Fallon had to agree though; she hadn’t experienced half the things “regular” kids got to growing up. But she was okay with it.
Fallon huffed out a breath as she clipped in her seatbelt. “So it’s a good thing I take advantage of the school’s gym then?” she asked, laughing. That gym kept her fit enough to do what she needed to whenever she stopped being a teacher and started being a producer again. Sometimes she wondered how she managed to stay on her feet for as long as she does, but she knew she fed off the energy, got excited when they were down to the wire and needed to get something done and it looked impossible. She loved it. Fallon laughed and joked with Evan as he drove them down the unfamiliar streets of Gabe’s home. Before long, Evan was putting the car in park and Fallon was left looking around at the new scenery. “Let the fun begin,” she said, unhooking her seatbelt and leaving the car.

Gabe had known that his family would embrace Fallon the moment they met her. They were just that kind of people. In all the years he had been alive he had never known his parents or his gramps to shun anyone any of the boys brought home, be it a friend or someone much more important. They were always welcoming and always ready to make someone feel like part of the Fitzpatrick family. It was why Gabe didn’t worry if he had to go and help his dad in one of the barns and Fallon would stay home with his mom; he knew there wouldn’t be awkward silences or strained conversations, even if he was gone for a few hours.
As with any family scenario though, it was only so long before Gabe appreciated the thought of a break, and a camping one was the best of all in his eyes. It was almost part of the routine when he had been living in Nebraska, whether it was a trip with his friends or with his dad whenever his mom needed some space to prepare things for a convention or seminar. It wasn’t exactly a quiet household living with so many pets and then with three sons barrelling through the house on a daily basis, usually chasing each other or shouting about something or the other in their personal lives. Gabe was pretty certain his mom appreciated the silence that came when her sons were off on their camping trips. “I can guarantee Gabe will have packed enough marshmallows to see you through Armageddon.” Esme commented, chuckling softly as Gabe whizzed by the window in his hunt for Evan.
“Not if part of the path is still as steep and as stubborn as I recall it.”
Gabe mumbled, remembering how many times part of the incline had been less stable than the rest and had pushed all of the camping party to hands and knees to practically crawl up it. It had been a few years since that now, but it had become a bit of a habit in the half a dozen or so camping trips he had been on last. After saying goodbye to Evan and throwing a usual Fitzpatrick insult his way, Gabe adjusted the heavy bag on his shoulders and turned towards the rough path of stone and dirt. “It is quite the walk, so you’ll have to let me know if you need a break.” Gabe was used to the route and the terrain, but he didn’t know how many of Fallon’s “camping” trips had been in places like this. Soon the path turned into woodland and then it was more a method of follow the make-shift paths of trodden ground and snapped twigs. Gabe knew the exact spot he wanted to take Fallon to, but it was one of the furthest out from where Evan had dropped them off. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Nerves had never been a real part of Fallon’s life. She threw herself into everything she did and didn’t worry about it someone didn’t like what she did because at the end of it all, she was doing it all for a reason. But nerves had been a big part of the trip to Nebraska. The Hollywood girl had been worried Gabe’s family wouldn’t like her. She knew she was being silly and Gabe’s words proved it more but it hadn’t mattered until they all welcomed her with open arms. Until then she hadn’t really taken a deep, easy breath. But even with all the happy, family bonding moments, Fallon was happy to be spending a few days in the bush. “Then at least I’ll come away from this trip with a permanent sugar high,” she joked, grinning mischievously over at Gabe who was more interested in digging up his brother than what the women in the room were talking about.
Fallon knew she was fit enough to be able to keep up and get wherever it was they were going but acting as though she were worried was amusing. The drive over to where they were getting out and walking was fairly quick and it left Fallon only enough time to think she should have called Ettie and made sure she was okay and hadn’t pulled out all her hair keeping up with the light workload Fallon had saddled her with, not to mention all the pop up problems that always seemed to appear whenever the sun rose. She was still fairly new but she was good and Fallon would miss her when she finally realised being an assistant wasn’t what she wanted out of life anymore. Hopefully by then, Fallon will have found her something else within the studio to keep her around! It was too late now and she hadn’t been answering her phone unless it was an emergency anyway, which were usually easily remedied once Fallon was contacted and not as serious as they all let on. “You said we were camping, not climbing Kilimanjaro,” Fallon said accusingly because a simply teasing tone just wouldn’t cut it.
“Contrary to popular belief, and my childhood tales, I can hike. I had to do something besides school work to keep myself occupied,” she said with an eye roll. There was only so much the makeup department could teach and since there were no real sets, it wasn’t like the crew had much to say either. It was hike with whoever could take the time away and her body guard or sit around and be too bored for words. She had always been active, though when she was in any city, she took to the gyms available to her and not a trek up a mountain side. But if she were being honest, she preferred the mountain hike over the treadmill at the gym. And to prove her point, she kept up with Gabe easily enough, despite his long legs and wider stride.

Gabe could be injured and on crutches and he’d still find a way to go camping. It had been a big part of his childhood, bonding with his father and brothers and had been the one time he hadn’t brought a book with him or joined in some intense discussion about the classics that not enough people appreciated as far as he was concerned. It was something to look forward to when school wasn’t on and when the weekends were drawing nearer. They were good trips, full of fond memories and crazy stories that they never told Esme about out of the fear that she’d never let them go again. Those stories were all part of the adventure though, and no camping trip was complete without some form of accident on Gabe’s part, mistake on Evan’s part and their dad often leading his sons the wrong way and then laughing when they almost ran into bee hives or twisted their ankle in a semi-hidden rabbit hole.
“Climbing Kilimanjaro is part of the camping experience. It all goes hand in hand.”
Gabe said quite seriously. Some of the terrain was tough, especially with bags and equipment resting on shoulders and backs. Even the experts of the family had to take a moment to gather themselves and adjust everything for some paths, just because it wasn’t the most stable of routes to take. Those were the paths that led to the best spots though, and it was important that everyone attempted it at least once in their lives, just to see that no one was exaggerating when they said they ended up crawling most of it, since otherwise it was like trying to climb through quicksand. Gabe already had memories of him and his brothers slipping down a few times, Morgan more than once sliding almost entirely the way back down the hill and swearing loudly as he went and clambered for something sturdy to grasp on to. It had been several years since Gabe had been out that way though, so he had no idea how bad that path would be now and even his brothers had said they hadn’t headed for that campsite recently either, so they couldn’t shed any light on the hill from hell. Still, it was funny if nothing else, which was why Gabe was already set on dragging Fallon out that way. She wanted the real camping experience and he wasn’t going to hold back on that for her. Gabe smiled and brushed the hair back out of his face, remembering again why his mom had been nagging at him to get the overgrown locks cut before he started resembling some sort of scrawny swamp monster. “You can hike, but this is more than hiking.” He said vaguely, turning up the trail and continuing under the shade of the trees. “Besides, when you hiked in the past did you have to carry camping gear the whole way?” He added, leaning down to steal a quick kiss before moving on again. He knew the way off by heart almost, but every site started from here and this bit he did know and could probably walk it in his sleep. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! All of Fallon’s life had been hotel rooms, rented houses or trailers in the woods depending on the situation they were in. Her stories were all about the museums and nice little cafes they’d toured and found while walking aimlessly through this foreign city or that one. But looking back, she would never give up those stories and memories for anything in the world. Without them, Fallon wouldn’t have turned out the way she had, she wouldn’t know the people or have seen as much as she had. She adored those people like they were her family, those places were considered home while she was staying there for however many months. Did she wish there was a time when Trevor had found a woman he adored and settled down to be a “real” family, of course. But that was now, now that Fallon was older and knew just how much her uncle sacrificed for her. She would be more than thrilled to find out he was seeing someone when she and Gabe went back to California in August. He deserved someone in his life that made him happy.
It was going to be a calm and relaxing time hiding away in the woods. There were no phones, no calls and no problems with anything. She was for all intents and purposes kidnapped without ransom. Even her vacations for as long as she could remember had almost daily phone calls from someone at the studio or on a set somewhere needing a problem solved. She was determined to be incommunicado for as long as they were camping. When they got back to the farm, she would deal with the missed calls then, but she’d left the studio and the work in New York in excellent hands. Plus, Trevor would be calling at least a dozen times a day to make sure things were running smoothly without Fallon rushing from place to place trying to do everything at once. “Climbing Kilimanjaro is something to strike from the bucket list,” Fallon said blandly.
“Yes,” she said deadpan, looking up at Gabe with a serious expression. She knew he would know there was no camping equipment involved because they’d been staying in trailers but she could pull off the deadpan expression so well, it was a shame to let it go to waste. There were bags strapped to their backs but they had water and some snacks for the halfway mark before they all decided it was time to head back and pretend like they actually put in hours of work. “Save that for the campsite,” she said, laughing against Gabe’s lips before he pulled away and they continued on their way. She had no idea where they were going but she trusted Gabe would get her wherever they were going in one piece. As much probably couldn’t be said about him, but at least one of them wouldn’t be broken by the time they trekked back. It was a good thing Gramps had remembered to pack the big first aid kit because the chance of Gabe going through their entire trip unscathed seemed very unlikely.

Gabe’s history was full of silly stories and daft ideas. The camping was only a small part of it. There was just as much madness back on the farm with the animals as there was in the woods. The three brothers, their parents and Gramps rarely had a quiet day over the many years they had all lived under the same roof. His childhood might have been chaotic and full of boyish taunts and jeers that often his mother had to stop, but Gabe wouldn’t change it for anything. There was only one memory he wished he could alter, but since he couldn’t he did everything in his power to forget about it, to ignore the nightmares it brought back to him. Luckily he had moved on greatly from that now and bringing Fallon out to one of his favourite camping spots was just another step further from those memories.
His bucket list did not have Kilimanjaro on it. While it would be an experience, Gabe was already in tatters with his knee and then the thought of every other injury he could, and probably would, receive on such a trip was enough to have him forgetting about it. Even hiking usually left him lying in bed with a dull ache in his bothersome knee late at night. Luckily he could push through that and force himself to sleep and usually by the morning it had eased off again. For camping, none of that mattered. Gabe would take the twinges if he had to, but he didn’t often catch them when he was setting out like this with his mind on other things and the general excitement of camping and being away from the usual. “Then you have fun with that.”
Was all he had to say on the matter. Shooting Fallon a look and rolling his eyes, Gabe only shook his head. “Lying really doesn’t suit you.” He commented in that annoying sing-song voice that could only get on the nerves of anyone who heard it. Leading his girlfriend deeper into the forests and away from civilisation, Gabe began the slow but steady climb up the first of the hills they would cross over before he revealed that they were at the site. He could walk this route in his sleep if he had to. “The campsite is for smores and ghost stories.” He said, teasingly shaking his head at the idea of kisses and romance. They had quite a walk ahead of them and probably by the time they’d set up for the night they’d both be ready to collapse and just enjoy their temporary escape from their normal day to day life. There wasn’t much Gabe didn’t know about Fallon and her life before she’d met him. If there was anything he didn’t know it wasn’t because she was purposefully keeping it from him. She probably just forgot about it or didn’t think it was all that important. Plus, there was just too much that had gone on when she was growing up to recount all the stories. She had always told him the ones that meant the most to her and the ones she deemed relevant to who she became as a person. Eventually she would have told him about the woman who carried her for nine months, but she had wanted some time to get her thoughts in order. She hadn’t wanted to tell him all about her sob story while they were visiting his family but she knew he wouldn’t have let up, just like she hadn’t when he told her about his own past troubles. They were closer for it, stronger together. Fallon loved the man she was willingly walking into a forest with.
Most of the things of Fallon bucket list were silly things most people would take for granted. She wanted a family, though she never thought about children until very recently. Her kids were always going to be pets from a young age because she could care for them. And she didn’t have to worry about screwing them up, however accidentally because she was their mother. In fact, the word mother associated with Fallon never came up. They were just two words that she and Trev never thought would be connected in any way. Fallon wanted a home, someone who loved her, no matter how insane she became doing her job. She wanted people in her life who understood her even when she didn’t make a lick of sense. Essentially, Fallon wanted Gabe; and Myles, Imogen, Devon, even Bryce! They were her family. Climbing any sort of mountain hadn’t been a part of that bucket list until Gabe brought up camping at a site he’d gone to plenty as a child. But even though the mountain they were climbing wasn’t something as impressive as Kilimanjaro or Everest, it was still a mountain. “I’ll find someone who’ll want to go with me. Not Myles, no women around, Devon maybe? Bryce? He seems like he’d agree to just about anything.” Fallon said, grinning.
The grin on Fallon’s face was too big and cheesy for it to be genuine but that didn’t stop her from trying to push the limit of it. “It’s not lying it’s extending the truth to prove my point.” Fallon teased, laughing. She had no idea how she was going to find her way out of this forest if anything happened. Not that she was hoping anything would happen, in fact, she was crossing her fingers that their trip was completely accident free! “We have to keep warm at night somehow!” Fallon said, devilishly. With that wicked grin on her lips, she ran the fingers of her free hand up Gabe’s arm and back down again. She wasn’t expecting to get a rise from him, he was too set on getting them to their campsite for that but a laugh or a sarcastic quip would be nice.

For the most part, Gabe had always been an open book and he had always been able to laugh at himself. It was a definite advantage given some of his ways, style and his clumsy day-to-day habits. His dad had once joked that Gabe had shot up one summer and since then had done a pretty good semi-permanent impression of Bambi on ice. His clumsy ways had gotten worse the older he seemed to get, or maybe they just became more noticeable when he wasn’t a little kid anymore and those trips and stumbles couldn’t be put down to his age. If he hadn’t been to laugh along at most of those jokes then he wouldn’t have gotten very far in his life and would most definitely had become a hermit in an apartment full of old books. The scholar may joke from time to time that he would be better off locking himself away with his tomes, but in reality he was glad that none of that had happened.
The things Gabe wanted out of life were pretty simple. He wanted the chaotic family with children and pets tumbling over each other. He wanted his books and his work and he wanted to continue reading, learning and pushing himself in academic pursuits. He wanted to have those things with Fallon, too, but he hadn’t mentioned anything like that to her yet. He didn’t want to scare her away or make it seem as if he had planned a lifetime out for them both when he really hadn’t. Gabe just wanted to make sure that she was in his future, but these things relied on the right time and the right place; they weren’t things that could be blindly rushed at from any which way and Gabe knew that and wanted everything to be just right. “I can see Devon trying to leave you behind in a trail of dust. She doesn’t do things lightly. And Bryce, well he would probably say yes before realising what he was signing up for.”
Gabe mused allowed, adjusting his glasses habitually. “Myles would be pissed at not getting an invite though.” He pointed out, glancing back at his girlfriend for a moment. “But it’s not proving a point. Not one bit.” He countered with a light shake of his head. He would forever pick at the details of any argument and yet he had no idea where such a trait came from. It had always just been one of the scholar’s quirky ways for longer than he could remember. Gabe had a feeling that it started out as a way to annoy his brothers when he was still too small to fight with them or really bother them like all little brothers ought to do. “And that is what the fire is for! Honestly, Fallon, try to think.” He teased, but without any hint of a smirk. A part of him was determined to keep shooting this idea down, just for the hell of it while they were still on the trail and with an hour or two ahead of them before he’d announce that they had arrived at their campsite. It was much more fun than Eye Spy for him. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Fallon <3 WORDS! 542! OUTFIT! Happy Camper! LYRICS! Thick as Thieves - - - Bon Jovi NOTES! <3

Fallon was making a conscience effort to take part in Gabe’s favourite activities. It wasn’t that she hated them all, in fact aside from the whole lecture on cannibalism a while back, she enjoyed spending time with him while he ranted on and on about Mythology and whatever else it was he loved so much about his work. She got to learn things from him that her movies just didn’t teach. At least, she was trying to get involved in it. She went out and bought books so she wouldn’t seem like a complete idiot even though they both knew she was clueless when it came to his work. But she loved him and if that meant hiking however many miles into the forest to spend a couple days alone camping, she would do it. Plus it really did sound like fun! The last time had been on location shoots. And even though it had been fun, it hadn’t been proper camping.
She couldn’t see her life without Gabe, even if it meant yawning through a lecture and going along with whatever he said afterwards as if she’d been listening the whole time when they both knew that wasn’t ever going to be the case. It wasn’t the subject matter either, it was lectures themselves. People droning on put her to sleep. It was why while she’d been in school she’d recorded all her classes; just in case she fell asleep! But at the same time she wasn’t about to beg Gabe to go shopping with her either. After college, she knew it was a lost cause and whenever she brought it up, he went white in the face and she laughed. “I never said I wouldn’t ask him! I would just ask him so quietly that he just gets annoyed with me and gives up! And therefore says no and I can go with a clear conscience!” Fallon said, like it was obviously her plan the entire time. “And Devon would bicker with me the whole way up and it would be hilarious. And Bryce would do it if I said Dev was going.” She pointed out because it was so obvious to her how much he liked her little blonde friend. The two of them were so adorable and so determined to fight it.
“You just don’t want to admit that I’m right and you’re not. It’s sucks, doesn’t it?” She asked, teasing her love. It would probably annoy her how he had to rip apart every little detail in an argument but she was so used to it by now that she really didn’t even hear it like that anymore. It was just another hurdle she had to jump over to get her side of the argument to win. “Sorry, I’m blonde. I guess there goes that little surprise I packed.” She said sadly, looking up at Gabe through her lashes. “And I do mean little.” It wasn’t completely a lie. She did have new lingerie that she’d picked up before they’d left New York but she hadn’t planned on wearing it on this trip and especially in the forest. She had it with her because the hell with comfort! They were in the forest after all! Besides, she probably wouldn't end up wearing it if it got that cold out during the night. She the forethought to throw in her winter fleece pyjamas. Though she had been surprised she still had them since she forgot she owned them most of the time.

Gabe never expected to find anyone as passionate about his hobbies and interests as he was. Fallon’s trying efforts were more than enough for him to appreciate and he fell in love with her all over again just because she actually tried. There were other people in his life, including Myles, who often just stopped his rambles or point out told him to shut up before he could even begin. Gabe knew it was because they wouldn’t really be interested or because they would rather talk about anything else and he didn’t mind that; he knew just how crazy he could sound sometimes once he got started. With Fallon she played along for the most part and just let him get it out of his system, which sometimes was all he really needed. He tried to do the same back with her interests, but he drew the line at those shopping sprees she seemed to love. His knee sometimes hurt just walking to the campus and back, so if he went on a shopping trip around New York with Fallon he would probably come home dragging his leg, and what was left of his sanity, behind him.
With the exception of shopping, Gabe would do anything for Fallon. She had been the love of his life for longer than he had allowed himself to believe it. Now that he could happily admit to it and tell the world about it, the last thing Gabe wanted was to lose it. He would do whatever it took to keep her in his life and if that meant putting up with these crazy conversations and silly little arguments then so be it; they were one of the reasons he loved Fallon so much in the first place. “You never know; a trip like that might do him the world of good! Or he could just come home and go on a bar crawl and find a different girl in each one to try and make up for all those nights out he might have missed.”
Myles wasn’t quite as bad as they joked, but it was still funny. He was the manwhore of the group and he seemed to carry that title with pride, so who were they to take it from him and force him to behave? Chuckling, Gabe shook his head and shot his girlfriend a look. “You tease those two like we’re all fourteen year olds. I don’t quite know what’s worse, the fact that you do tease them like that or the fact that you can tease them like that.” He shook his head and moved the unruly hair out of his face once more. He was just glad he had Fallon and that the majority of the teasing remarks were over and done with. All they could do now was dredge up the past to try and get a rise out of him and Gabe was already far too used to that technique, thanks to Myles. Arching an eyebrow, Gabe looked down and Fallon and sighed. “That makes even less sense than the point you were trying to make in the first place.” He told her, shaking his head at her. He knew he always fell back on the technicalities to try to win an argument or prove a point, but most of the time they worked or they annoyed people into giving up and changing the topic before murder started sounding like a wise option. “Little things can get easily lost out here. I just hope you don’t lose it.” He said innocently, acting as though Fallon wasn’t trying to flirt or seduce him. Sometimes it was just funny to combat her flirting with obliviousness to see how long it would take before she either gave up or jumped him. Gabe was intrigued though by what little thing she might have packed, but for now he was keeping a tight hold on that curiosity. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Most of Fallon’s hobbies began and ended with the studio. Her work with the studio was more of something to keep her busy with something to do since the New York offices ran fairly smoothly. And the only reason she was still on the payroll was because of her odd little jobs. She was still considered a part of the company but what she did during the school year was minimal. There may have been a lunch here, a meeting there because she was the daughter of the owner and she knew more than most of the people who worked for them, but other than that she kept away unless it was a serious catastrophe. But Gabe, bless him tried to understand her ranting and raving about this or that. And helped her when she had a question that she thought may or may not have fallen into one of his hobbies. It was why they worked so well together. Neither of them could focus long enough on what the other did as a hobby but they tried and that was what mattered.
Fallon couldn’t see a future without Gabe in her life. When they’d first met, it had been as friends. Almost since the day they met Gabe had been Fallon’s best friend. She had her handful of girlfriends back then though she wouldn’t have talked to them about anything deeper than gossip, phone calls with Imogen that were sadly, few and far between thanks to college life and the guys of Pi Kappa Phi. And as much as she loved all those guys, she went to Gabe whenever she had a problem. For the last seven years, his opinion on something mattered to her more than she ever admitted but she figured he always knew. Whenever she was having trouble at work at the studio, she called him up and talked him into a movie night that ended with her past out, using him as a pillow as the credits rolled for the final flick. The best part of it all was that he let her run with whatever wild thought her mind concocted. “The second we got back he would go on some sort of sex binge! We would either not see him for a week or his room door would become a revolving one and if we spent any time there at all we would need noise cancelling headphones!” The worst part of that was Fallon was afraid she would be right.
“Personally I like the latter. I can so I do. And only Devon fights back against it! I think Bryce enjoys the torment, really.” Bryce also didn’t deny liking Devon while Devon seemed to fight it as much as she could. They were lucky, most of the teasing and torment had already passed for them. And Fallon was very thankful for that. Now if anything did come up, she was used to it and just rolled with some sarcastic remark. Rolling her eyes, Fallon huffed out a breath. “Oh, whatever.” She muttered giving up because she knew how Gabe could get when they were in one of their silly fake arguments. It was easier to drop it than to continue sometimes. “You’re going to tell me you’re not the least bit curious?” She asked, running her fingers up Gabe’s arm closest to her. “I know you better than that.” She said, grinning up at her boyfriend.

When it came to Fallon’s day at the studio, the most Gabe could often do was listen. He didn’t know much about the technical side of things there and if he interrupted each time he needed to check if the right name matched up with the right face in his mind they would be there for hours just getting through the pleasantries of “how was your day.” He offered comments when he could, but more often than not he was there to listen and occasionally tease her when the opportunity came up. On the upside, at least they could never clash when it came to their hobbies or trip over each other with their passions.
He had kept his feelings quiet for the longest of times, telling himself that they were only friends until eventually he bought the belief himself. Gabe ought to have known that the secret wouldn’t last a lifetime. There was bound to be a countless number of ways in which he might have spilt his feelings about Fallon to her or someone else. He had just been lucky that she had felt the same way and that there had been nothing ultimately standing between them. It could have gone so much differently and he could have lost her forever, but Gabe didn’t want to dwell on that. It hadn’t happened and it was never going to turn out like that either. He wasn’t going to let it. “At least we’d have a week without him interrupting us.”
Gabe said with a shrug and a smirk. He had called Myles out on it before, but his roommate insisted that he didn’t deliberately interrupt the couple having a romantic moment when they were at the guy’s apartment. Gabe didn’t believe him for a second; there was too much mischief in his grin for it to be pure coincidence each and every time. “Although don’t tell him about the revolving door idea. I wouldn’t be surprised if I came home from the library to find one installed.” He shook his head at the very idea, but Myles was forever “tweaking” bits of their apartment to make it better. Gabe chuckled, softly shaking his head again. “You forget they both work with Myles, too. They probably just don’t need him to overhear something and be armed with enough ammunition for the whole NYPD to enjoy.” Gabe had suffered Myles’ torment before and he could understand completely why anyone else might try to avoid such suffering. He was used to it by now, but it didn’t mean he enjoyed it or wanted to encourage his Pi Kappa Phi brother. “Curious? About what?” He asked, playing oblivious just to tease Fallon a little more. When the chances came along he took them and he often enjoyed how Fallon responded, whether she huffed at him or made him laugh. “You know me in the city. This is the forest. I am a completely different man here.” He said, managing to keep a straight face as they traversed deeper into the forest. A little while longer and they would be at the site. Fallon knew she was lucky to have Gabe. There weren’t many people who could put up with her and she was just thankful one of the rare few that could happened to be her best friend and love of her life. She didn’t know what she would ever do without him. It may have sounded ridiculous but she ran a lot of idea past him before making a final decision. His opinion had always mattered to her. She was sure half the rants she paced went in one ear and out the other with the scholar but at least he cared enough to pretend. And she did the same unless the topic turned to something that turned her stomach; like that cannibalism thing a while back. She couldn’t do with that.
She didn’t know quite how she could ever put her feelings into words. They were there, always in the back of her mind but she just hadn’t clued in to them until she thought it was too late and she spent the first half of that fateful night wallowing in bottles of wine, pity and movies. Now she could only be thankful that she’d thrown away every bad feeling she’d had that night and kissed him. They may have been where they were now without that night but it definitely helped them along a hell of a lot faster. It really had been stupid of them not to tell each other beforehand, when they finally clued in. She had never been one to do what she’d done. But she’d been so shocked about everything that had happened that she’d tried figuring it out internally and not talking it out with Gabe. They were foolish, her especially but she was so thankful they were past that now. Even if it did come with Myles’ all too knowing grin and far from innocent interruptions. “Mm, a whole week without Myles in New York. I have no idea what that’s like.” She said laughing, though she was being honest. When they were at the guys’ place, he was usually around in some capacity and when they were at Fallon’s he managed to text or call enough times to irritate the blonde professor into picking up the phone; which she knew was the plan but still. “I could just imagine what he’d do with an idea like that.” She said, eyes wide with worry. It was bad enough half the time she went to their place she was holding her breath to see what changes had been made.
Fallon bit her bottom lip, holding back the grin. “I didn’t forget. I chose to ignore him for my immediate plans. He comes in later when it’s old news and he’s behind.” Fallon said, letting go of the laugh she’d been trying to hold back. She knew what Myles was like, there wasn’t a person who didn’t know him for as long as they did that hadn’t been tormented and teased by him at some point. So she was just as aware as Gabe how bad Myles could get; but they loved him anyway. “You’re not that thick.” Fallon said blandly, but didn’t elaborate more than that because she was well aware Gabe heard what she’d said. He may enjoy teasing her but she didn’t always have to rise to the challenge; or the bait. Fallon shook her head laughing. “So what you’re saying is there’s less of a chance of you hooking into a lifted tree root and face planting than then you falling down the stairs back home?” She asked, skeptical. The petite blonde didn’t mind the trek through the forest but after so long, she needed a break; she just didn’t want to stop, really stop until they got where they were camping or the chances were she wouldn’t get back up again. “Not to sound like a petulant child but are we there yet?” She finally gave in and asked.

Ever since that fateful day when he had met Fallon on the UCLA campus, Gabe had never paused to consider his life without her in it. He had known almost instantly that she would always be there in some way, but he had no idea that they’d end up living in New York or that she’s be his girlfriend. That last one had been a secret for longer than Gabe cared to remember, but according to his Pi Kappa Phi brothers it just might have been the world’s worst kept secret. Most of those Frat boys were teased for how oblivious they could be in obvious situations, but apparently none of them had missed out on the chemistry between the scholar and the blonde.
Just like he couldn’t imagine his life without Fallon, Gabe also couldn’t imagine his future without Myles on the side-lines. He was there at the worst moments, sure, and there were times when Gabe could really do without the massive grin on his best friend’s face, but he also knew that if it wasn’t there then he would miss it. “It would be quiet. Probably suspiciously too quiet.”
He said with a chuckle, only imaging how many things Myles could get up to in a week and how much trouble he would bring back with him. Those thoughts alone were enough to have him shaking his head and hoping there was never a break like that for Myles in his routine. Gabe would only spend the week fretting and worrying about what was to come next. “The last thing Myles needs is any more ‘good’ ideas.” Gabe added, pushing his messy hair back from his face. Shaking his head, Gabe laughed and then raised an eyebrow at Fallon’s mention of plans. “I’m surprised Devon even puts up with you as a friend.” He teased light-heartedly. It was with a nod of his head that he turned to Fallon and pushed his glasses back into their correct place. “Yupp. Tree roots are easier to navigate than stairs and steps. Plus, with one I get a mouthful of dirt and the other leaves me with a sprained ankle at least.” He summarised, knowing it made little sense but he had twenty-five years of walking and stumbling proof to back it all up. Another laugh, a glance at his watch and Gabe shook his head once more. “You better grin and bear it; we still have another hour at least to walk.” When they camped they went deep into the forests so that there could be no lack of enthusiasm if it started to rain or it got a bit cold. They were there for the trip, regardless of how close home really was. It was the way they had camped since they were kids and it was something Gabe wasn’t about to change, especially since he was taking Fallon to the best spot he knew. In Gabe’s opinion it didn’t take them all that long to reach the overlook he was leading Fallon towards and soon enough he had the tent set up and everything they needed ready for the trip. He had been camping so many times that it was like second nature to him now and he didn’t need to think all that much about setting up their modest campsite. “Just wait until the sun rises. Then you’ll know why I brought you all the way out here.” He promised, wrapping his arms around Fallon’s waist and grinning down at her like he knew something she didn’t.
