Imogen seriously felt as though she had woken up one morning with the bump she sported now. Her pregnancy definitely wasn’t something she could hide anymore and the maternity clothes were at the front of her wardrobe while all the stuff she was used to wearing had found a home at the back. The latest scan was already in a silly home-made frame on the refrigerator as though she could look at it and remember why she was eating odd things whenever she went on the hunt for whatever her latest craving had been. Recently she had been consuming her body weight in chili peppers, snacking on them while she watched TV or surfed the internet for freelance journalism work. There was a jar sitting in the corner of the room where Imogen had let her phone and water bottle rest. Today she was tackling the nursery with the help of Fallon. She had moved any of the unnecessary boxes out the night before. There were still a few that she hadn’t unpacked, but they were mainly old bits and trinkets that she hadn’t found homes for yet. She had stumbled across a few surprises for Fallon, too, but they were in a box in the nursery so the pair could laugh when they needed a break.
Immy had been given the option of finding out her baby’s gender during the last scan, but while the temptation was there she had chosen to be surprised instead. She had come to terms with everything now, but was still keeping the distance between herself, LA and her family. This was her new chapter and she still had fears about them being a part of it. So, for now, she had Fallon and that was enough for Imogen. There was still a little bit of time before Fallon was due over, so Imogen played with Pippa for a bit, hoping to tire the little dog out so that they could work in peace that afternoon. Pippa was trained well enough that she shouldn’t bother them, but Imogen just didn’t want yellow paw prints throughout her apartment!
Once the dog chose her cushion over the tug rope, Imogen moved back to the bare room that would hopefully look more like a nursery by the time the day was done. She had furniture stored in the other spare room, some of it still in need of assembly. Most of the things she needed had been bought and paid for and the only things she still needed to buy were more clothes, necessary baby things, the pushchair and car seat. The nursery was ready just not put together and she had started on the little baby toys, books and trinkets that had caught her eye when she had been out and about in the city. There was no doubt about it that the baby would be spoilt by her! Imogen had moved the paint tins to the nursery and was swapping them for her jar of chili peppers when she heard the sound of a key in the front door, which meant Fallon had arrived. She was the only one with a key to her converted apartment and so Immy poked her head out from around the doorway to the nursery. She had chosen the room that was convenient closest to her office space, the living room and the short staircase that led up to her own bedroom and the small upper portion of the home. “I hope you’re ready to get covered in buttercup fool.”
She grinned before biting into the pepper in her hand. The thing wasn’t even that appetising, but right now Imogen couldn’t get enough of them! To say Fallon was excited for Imogen’s baby was probably an understatement. The only children in the professor’s life had been when she was one and they had been her own age. No one she knew brought their kids to work, which was where she spent most of her time, though she was still waiting for the day a knock sounded on the guy’s door to inform the lovable womaniser one of his one night stand was about to give him an heir. She was sure it was bound to happen eventually it was just a matter of time before it did. She had faith, clearly. But until then, she only had Imogen’s baby to spoil rotten. And boy was she doing just that already. Sure, it was a little premature to be buying anything but Fallon just couldn’t help herself. When she passed by a window and happened to see a teddy bear or something else that didn’t scream specific gender; especially since she didn’t know what Immy was having.
The plans to go to Imogen’s and help her out with the nursery were all Fallon had planned for the day. She said she was going to help and she was going to keep her word. But when she’d gotten up that morning, there was an issue with a camera at the studio and she had to make a stop to deal with it. It took a hell of a lot longer to figure things out and she had to bring in a couple techs to see if she had to pull out the cash to get a new one or if it was something that could be fixed. She had the power to buy the equipment but the one saying it broke was new and Fallon didn’t want to fork out cash that could go somewhere else to something that wasn’t really broken in the first place. And thankfully, there was a small problem with a couple switches that weren’t set properly and all was well. And that had Fallon on her way again, making a pit stop to that little café she’d taken Imogen to when she told her the good news for tea and biscotti.
Driving through New York had never bothered the Hollywood blonde. She grew up in and around Los Angeles, the traffic there wasn’t any worse or better than the big apple; she could handle it. Parking her car, Fallon gathered everything she brought with her and set the alarm as she walked up to the familiar building. She’d been there plenty of times now that Imogen was in town. She flipped through the handful of keys she carried with her always until she found the right one and let herself into Imogen’s place, knowing it was easier to do that than to wait around when Immy might not even hear the door. “That sounds like either the best pastry ever or a shade of yellow that’ll blind us by the time we’re done.” Fallon called, laughing. She used her foot to shut the door and went straight into the kitchen to set her treats down before going to the nursery to see all that had to be done. “I am so ready for this. I wore my best clothes.” Fallon teased, putting her hands on her hips and looking around what was soon to be the cutest room.

Imogen knew that motherhood wasn’t something she could just stroll into and master within a day. There would be times over the years when she felt like crying, screaming, and feeling completely out of her depth. She also knew it would be entirely worth it though. The Californian blonde was still terrified about going into this alone, with no partner to support her and the baby’s father totally absent, but she had Fallon and Imogen had been independent for long enough to know that this was just another challenge for her to tackle. It also brought along at least eighteen more years of challenges, but at least Immy could guarantee that her life would never be dull!
Between Imogen’s own shopping sprees and Fallon’s surprise buys, the baby was already spoilt and it was still so long off from arriving in the world. She had a feeling they’d need more storage and shelving by the time she gave birth, but Imogen didn’t mind. She wanted her child to have the best. Imogen had been a victim to that man’s play, but now she was carrying his baby and while she knew he would have no part in her child’s life, she wanted to make it known that it didn’t matter. Immy felt no shame in going into this alone and she was going to be certain that her child wouldn’t feel ashamed either, although she wanted to keep the truth to herself for as long as was possible. It was hardly her proudest moment and not something she wanted to be remembered for.
Imogen wanted to get the nursery done today. She had her fingers crossed that it would be finished, too, so that all she had to worry about was moving stuff into the cupboards and drawers as and when she bought it. Living on her own, Imogen was slightly worried about the time that might come when her baby belly would really make tasks difficult. The more stuff she got crossed off her to do list now, the more relaxed she could be as her due date crept closer and she grew bigger. Imogen also wanted to ask Fallon if she would mind spending the final few weeks in the spare room, just in case something happened when Immy was alone. She kept telling herself she could do this, but she’d rather not risk a full blown panic attack the minute she realised that “kicks” were in fact contractions. It had happened far too many times in movies and TV shows for anyone to convince Immy that the chances of it happening to her like that were slim.
Clipping her hair back out of her face, Immy grinned and then her lips formed a little ‘o’ shape. “Ooh, a bearclaw sounds so good right now.”
She said, forgetting that she was still munching on a jar of chili peppers. Though she tossed another one into her mouth before she shrugged and continued. “Hopefully it won’t be too bright. I asked the guy in the store for something sunshiney, but not something that would make me hate myself during 3am feeds.” She explained, phrasing it exactly how she had done for the poor college kid who seemed slightly flustered for some reason when Imogen had asked for his help. It was probably her mood that day. It was swinging from sarcastic to cheery and then over to annoyed almost every couple of minutes. “And I can tell! They’re your ready to paint the town red clothes. Only this time it’s yellow.” She grinned, gesturing Fallon further into the nursery where there wasn’t a whole lot to look at besides the mess that would hopefully soon look ready for a baby. Fallon adored kids; especially the tiny ones. She had a welcome policy for the employees of the studio in New York to bring their kids to work. She often asked the crew and their kids if they wanted to be extras in scenes instead of having to do an open call which never ended well for Fallon. She was always about helping those who helped her out. But she loved having the kids running around the set and tormenting the crew because she’d done exactly that growing up and it just didn’t seem like a movie set unless there were children about making her crew shake their heads at the antics. Plus, whenever they were on set, they learned something new in some capacity. Sometimes it was applying makeup properly and different techniques, lighting enhancements or bits about the cameras and all the angles. She may not have ever thought about having her own but she adored the little munchkins all the same. So having a good friend having a baby had Auntie Fallon going crazy while she was shopping and picking up the cutest little things she saw. They were impulse buys but they would be used so Fallon didn’t mind in the least.
“I’ll text Gabe to bring us some. It can be our treat for finishing the awesome paint job.” Fallon said, wiggling her brows, like doing that would help the decision in anyway, and pulled out her cellphone to send her boyfriend a quick text with treat order and Imogen’s address and told him he couldn’t stay because this was still a girl’s day so he was only welcome to drop off his girlfriend’s and her pregnant friend’s orders and go again. It might take him an hour or more to get around to it but by the time he showed up, they would actually deserve the break and the goodies. “In the meantime, I did bring biscotti and tea!” She said, trying to make it sound exciting because now that they’d brought up bearclaws, she wanted one, too. Why hadn’t she thought of that when she’d stopped at the café? Now that would have made sense! With the message sent, Fallon set the phone on the counter next to the paper bag to be forgotten.
Fallon really was excited about painting the room and doing whatever else needed to be done with the nursery. “I’m sure it’s a lovely colour that won’t make you hate yourself. And if it turns out you hate it after three months of 3am feedings, we’ll paint it gender appropriately!” Fallon said, sounding cheerful about the whole process. She was sure though that the colour Imogen initially chose was going to be a great one. “Maybe I should have worn yellow. No one would know if I got myself covered in paint!” Fallon joked, holding out the tea she’d brought for Imogen. Coffee was usually Fallon’s go to but she had wanted a tea when she’d walked through the door of the café so that was exactly what she’d grabbed for herself. There were still plenty of hours in the day to grab a coffee or twelve. “So, shall we?” She asked before taking a sip of her own drink.

Imogen had never spent that much time around children or babies. She was the youngest in her family and with only a handful of cousins spread across the country, family reunions came during the holidays only. Even then, some opted to stay with in-laws or celebrate with their “new” families as they put it, if they had not long had a baby of their own. Employees at the hotel rarely brought their kids by and if they did then there was usually plenty of other people flocking around. Truthfully, Imogen had never given much thought to children before her pregnancy. She grumbled whenever she was out and there was a screaming child, smiled at adorable baby photographs and sometimes saw a toddler outfit that she wished she could buy, but Imogen had never been broody or jealous around expectant mothers. She had always thought Jackson would be the one with the children before her. Imogen had always seen herself in the role of aunt more than mother, since she was so caught up in living her life and making the most of being young and having few responsibilities. All of that had changed now though, and while the fear still remained, Imogen couldn’t say that she resented the surprise that had driven her to New York. Sometimes Fate didn’t offer much of a choice and it seemed Imogen had been dealt that hand, so she could only expect that the reason for that would come along at some point to make sense of everything.
The Californian blonde had every intention to torment Fallon during this pregnancy with jokes and comments about her friend’s burdening relationship and true love. “Careful, he might come and see the nursery and want one of his own.”
She teased playfully. Her son or daughter might have a couple of years on Fallon’s by the time that happened, but Imogen had a gut feeling that sooner or later Fallon would be coming to her to tell the big reveal and then Imogen could be the fun aunt for a little bit, too. The tables had to balance out in one way or another! “Ooh, biscotti and tea! Lovely, I could do with a break from eating chili peppers.” Imogen glanced at the jar containing her current addiction and wrinkled her nose up. She had never been much of a fan before, once even criticising a college ex about his habit of eating peppers straight from the jar. Now it seemed those roles were reversed, but at least Imogen had a temporary excuse for any erratic behaviour of her own. Pulling another face, Imogen shook her head. “If I hate it by that point it can be painted either green or beige. I got so sick the other day of the assistant in the store trying to offer me gender appropriate bedding despite me repeatedly telling her that I didn’t know the gender.” Resting her hand on her bump, Immy shook her head and let out a long sigh. “Plus, I’d rather not have wardrobes of baby colours before I have the baby.” It might have sounded silly, but Imogen had a thin memory of an old friend’s pregnancy where she revealed she was having a little girl and suddenly everything was light shades of pink. The poor baby spent the first six months looking like a Barbie accessory since no one had dared buy another shade and the mother hadn’t wanted to seem ungrateful. That would not be Imogen. “Or I would have lost you in with the walls. Let’s not forget that I’m not totally with it these days.” More blonde moments had been occurring as of late, but Immy was blaming it all on the rush of changing hormones and the human being growing inside of her. She didn’t think she’d actually lose Fallon, but she had done some embarrassing things that made her glad she lived alone. Accepting the tea with a smile and taking a long sip, Imogen sighed contently and then nodded her head. “Sure thing. C’mon, I have everything set up in here.” Dust sheets were down over the flooring, the tins popped and the brushes and rollers just waiting for the girls to get their hands on them. “What do you think?” Immy asked, revealing the warm colour to her friend and looking across at her for her opinion.
