Caoimhe had her brothers to thank for her love of video games. For almost as long as she could remember there had been a console hooked up to a television set and tangles of wires and controllers draped across the house. It would have been some kind of miracle if she hadn’t picked up a controller and fell in love with Final Fantasy IX, which just happened to be the first video game she played on her own and completed. It was quite a proud moment back then and now that game held a level of nostalgia for her that couldn’t be beaten. Although times had certainly changed and the shelving that separated the main part of her apartment from the bedroom was now completely fit to burst with video games. It was one of the first things she did whenever she got paid; treat herself to a new game.
She loved having friends who shared her passion for gaming. It made life a lot easier and gave them something to talk about when there was a lull at work or an awkward silence in a group. Plus, it wasn’t like her brothers were just around the corner to show a new game to or challenge them, so it was nice to have other people who could take on those roles while Caoimhe was in New York. It also stopped her from sounding like a completely insane person when she mentioned all night marathons with energy drinks, snacks and a controller that she held on to for so long that it was almost painful to relax her hands afterwards. At least if there was one person who might understand that sensation, it would be Finn. And there was only a little bit of time before he was due over at the redhead’s tiny apartment.
After spending the morning cleaning up and running the tedious errands that she wished someone else could do, Caoimhe found herself in the grocery store stocking up on the video game essentials for her evening plans with Finn. How they had both landed the evening off work was beyond her, but Caoimhe was a smart girl and knew better than to question such good luck. Maybe it was the luck of the Irish! The thought had her chuckling and running her fingers over the tattoo wrapped around her wrist. Right now she sounded like she had stepped out of Louisiana only yesterday, but give her a plane ticket and a few hours and you wouldn’t think twice about Caoimhe being raised anywhere else but Portumna. One of the perks of the divorce, if there could be such a thing, had been the beauty of Irish upbringing for part of the year and then the rough and tumble of life in the south for the rest.
Not wanting to let herself get distracted for too long, Caoimhe made her way through the store with the semi-full cart and then took her usual route back to her New York home. Dagger was already taking up space on Caoimhe’s bed when she got through the door, but the cat moved to see if there was anything interesting in the bags that Caoimhe was skilfully balancing. When she saw that there wasn’t, she went back to the corner of the bed and left the lanky redhead to do as she pleased. That consisted of tossing the snacks into cupboards or bowls and putting the energy drinks in the small refrigerator next to the bottles of water. It took a bit of manoeuvring of other bits, but soon they were all in there and Caoimhe had time to relax for a little while and chomp on a bowl of cereal. It wasn’t all that long though before the buzzer echoed and she swung her legs over the couch and shuffled to reach the intercom. “Open sesame!”
She said cheerfully, hitting the button for the main door and then flipping the latch on her own front door. That way she could grab them both a drink and grab some of the newer games they had been talking about and Finn could just walk straight on in. There had been a lot going on in the Healy household. If there wasn’t a game being played in the yard, there was one on the TV. With six children running around, something was always happening. Someone or more than one took up space in front of the spare TV where all the consoles found a home and took turns bringing this game and that one to life. For Finn, it was a rare day he was even indoors and in front of that particular TV. With knowing Football was going to be his ticket to a good school, he spent the majority of his time practicing in the back garden, while someone, usually one of his parents or Amelia who took studying more seriously than life sometimes; or so it seemed. Plus she was always keen to help him out with his own studies when the higher grades came around.
But those rare days when Finn could be found sitting in front of that second television, glued to the blue beanbag chair, he put his all into the game at his fingertips. How he managed to juggle it all was a wonder in itself but even the brightest needed their outlet. And for Finn, it was video games. There was only so much Finn could endure before he needed a break from genetics and a short recess from Football practice. As it was, he practically lived outside when the weather permitted it. And it was the conversation Finn had had with his co-worker, fellow science nerd and gamer that had them planning a head to head gaming battle; see which one really was the best. Not that he really would have turned down a night of video games in the first place. But the conversation had the Irish born geneticist in training and the future biologist making those plans for a day or night they were both free of work, training and everything else.
It was a miracle they’d managed to get the same night off. Finn had totally thought they would end up spending all day before a shift playing games and affectionately teasing each other, calling each other names and laughing at the other when they pulled a stupid move. Penny must have sensed something or overheard something to have their schedules line up so perfectly but either way Finn was not about to look a gift horse in the mouth. He knew they’d set a time but Finn had been kept on the phone a little longer than he’d anticipated thanks to the surprise phone call from his youngest sibling. And while Miranda had only wanted to get his opinion on a matter, she managed to drag it out over an hour and a half, leaving Finn wondering if his baby sister could do for a trip away from the craziness that was the Healy household. He would worry about that in the morning when he knew he could easily catch his mother and they could chat.
Finn gathered his things immediately after hanging up with his sister and bolted out the door, only stopping long enough to make sure it was locked. The apartment building itself was secure and he knew his neighbours were a good bunch of people but it was New York and even the safest places had flaws. It didn’t take him long at all before he was pressing the right buzzer to let Caoimhe that he was there and ready to fight. He chuckled at her voice over the system as she let him through and continued to chuckle as he moved quickly up to her apartment. Like usual, he just twisted the handle to the door of her place and it opened easily. The handful of times he’d been to her place, she’d done the same thing each and every time; gave him access and then flicked the locks so he could easily enter without waiting around. “Ready to lose, Keev?”

Caoimhe couldn’t imagine a quiet sort of life for growing up. Portumna held the quieter months but even then she managed to find some trouble to get up to with her brothers. It was usually the kind that had her step-sister complaining about how embarrassing they were when she had her friends over; not that her complaining ever changed anything. The three of them were rambunctious children and the habits had stuck with them over the years, growing worse when they were reunited for holidays or surprise trips. Even in New York Caoimhe found a way to have her neighbour giving her a tired look most of the days when she stumbled out of her apartment, usually tangled in something that ought to have remained inside the cluttered home.
Keeping busy reminded her of home. Her friends replaced her kooky family, university replacing the days of high school, Planet Hollywood replacing the family joint back in Columbia. She called the family at least three times a week, often just to hear their crazy arguments over the phone while one yelled at another at the same time that they tried to hold a conversation with Caoimhe. It was exactly like it had been throughout her whole life and she loved it. She was only eighteen, with no real thought given to her future after university, but she knew that her family life would be the one she wanted to pass on if she ever did settle down or have children of her own. The thought of either was enough to have her saying it wasn’t for her. Right now she was more occupied with thoughts of video games, biology classes and missing her dirt bike.
Tonight her mind was most definitely on the first of those things. She had been bouncing around all day making sure everything was ready for the evening with Finn. Snacks had to be bought, energy drinks chilled and controllers charged and ready to go. There was nothing worse than sitting down to enjoy a game only to see the battery low warning ten minutes into getting started. She stooped low to pluck two cans from her refrigerator, straightening up and kicking the door closed before moving into the short hallway to greet Finn when he came through the door. She did that by offering the drink to him and arching an eyebrow. “Lose? I don’t know the meanin’ o’ the word.”
She smirked, her competitive side coming out of her now that he was there. Finn being there also meant there would probably be that familiar swing in her accent to. How she managed to develop two very different and distinguishable accents was beyond her, but it had been the amusing talent that had confused people for many, many years. “Okay, so I put the last three games we argued about on the table, but there are more on my shelves, as you already know. Go ahead and make yourself at home.” Caoimhe didn’t care if her guests made a mess or lounged all over her couch. She’d rather her friends be comfortable and enjoying themselves than feeling out of place and worrying about the manner their mothers had taught them and being ever so polite. None of that really mattered so much to Caoimhe. If people wanted a snack or a drink then they knew where the kitchen was, and her apartment was theirs when they came to visit.
