She stated matter-of-factly, not even looking over her shoulder at Jay. She already knew the look that would be on her photographer friend’s face. Seeing it would only throw Coop onto the defensive and that wouldn’t be productive after the amount of drinks she had downed at the bars.It had been one hell of a night, even by the standards of Coop and Jay. They had started early, but the places they favoured always closed before they were ready to head home with a bad takeout and shoes hanging from their wrists. Coop had missed all of these nights when she had been away from New York, but now she was back she couldn’t get enough of them! There wasn’t enough of them for Coop’s liking, but real life and other commitments kind of got in the way of living the non-stop party life. Right now Coop was feeling the side effects to three nights out on the run, but it wasn’t the alcohol taking its toll on her. It was the high heels she had been wearing. Three nights, three different pairs, and Coop had put each of them through the trials; running, dancing, and staggering home as the sun was peeking over the horizon. Now her feet were aching and burning and she just wanted to sit down and take them off.
That was the excuse she gave to Jay when she grabbed her friend’s wrist and dragged her down the street in the opposite direction to either of their apartments. “Travis is just closer and my feet will not get me back to yours.”
In truth, the young cardiologist had been creeping into her thoughts ever since he replied to one of her texts a good few hours ago. She had been waiting on her drink at the bar when the chime had just about caught her attention. It didn’t matter that he had posted the DVD through the mailbox of her empty apartment, but she had replied all the same with her usual touch of sarcasm. Since then he had filtered through her thoughts as each drink pushed her closer to drunk, but she wasn’t like some girls on nights out who made the regrettable phone calls or sent the embarrassing text messages. In fact, after reading that reply, her phone had gone back into her bag and stayed there. It was only now, with the combination of alcohol, sore feet and unwanted thoughts, Coop found herself dragging Jay towards Travis’ apartment.
Reaching the building after fifteen minutes of staggering and chattering, Coop shushed Jay as they slipped inside, subtly trying to make their way upstairs without anyone waking up or wondering where two strange, dressed up girls might have been going at this hour of the night. Reaching the door, Coop knocked loudly, knowing that she would probably be waking Travis up. Right now she didn’t care though. He was inside, her shoes needed to come off and Jay had been talking about food the whole journey. “Travis! Open this door unless you want me to break it down!” She called out, hopefully not so loud that it would distract the neighbours and have them calling the cops. Coop did not need that on top of bad shoes and drunk thoughts arguing with her usual cynical sanity.
