Nix, unfortunately, found that once he had seen the touristy sites of New York once, they seemed to lose their appeal and on days like today when he had no classes and no work, he found himself struggling for activities. It wasn’t that he didn’t love the city, it was more to do with his hyperactive personality and the fact that he really couldn’t sit still for very long and that he always had to be entertained by something; there were only so many times that wax models could make the blonde haired scientist laugh. In fact, there was only one place in the city that never grew old and despite the fine rain that drizzled over the sitting, falling against the windows of Nix’s tiny apartment, he quickly made the decision to throw some clothes on and make his way to the zoo in Central Park.
There was always something about the animals there that brought Nix back from a stressful day, even though he hadn’t had one. He wasn’t so much a fan of seeing the animals away from their natural habitats but they were still amazing to see and it was really the cheapest way that he could, at least until he had a career and was making the big money doing what he did best, despite the state of his own apartment suggesting otherwise. However, his keen eye for details meant that even with all the mess surrounding his home, he never actually lost anything, always knowing exactly where things got dumped in the chaos.
Central Park seemed like nothing more than a mere hop, skip and jump away from his apartment, but in fact, it was just the speed in which Phoenix strode down the street, his long legs ducking and diving through the throng as he walked the eight blocks to the park, headphones in and the blast of his favourite playlist pounding in his ears as the rest of the world was blocked out behind the epic guitar riffs and mind melting drum solos. It wasn’t long before he was at the gates of the zoo, his mind pausing to wonder how the hell he had managed to get their so quickly. His childish, overactive mind told him that, clearly, he had apparated to the zoo and that his memory of Hogwarts had been erased by the single word Obliviate and that he was, in fact, the wizard he believed he was and that the running around in a cape as a small child, pointing a magic wand (which was in fact a twig) was indeed his way of connecting with his true soul; the magic within that he would never be without, no matter where life took him.
…He really needed to stop paying more attention to his worn Harry Potter novels than he did to his textbooks.
He began to move around the zoo slowly, his feet dragging along the ground as the lanky senior moved closer to the first enclosure, taking a moment to read the information board that sat near it. Phoenix loved to catch up on the new information about the zoo, whether it was a new animal, farewell to a beloved creature or even something more simple and instructive, like; Don’t feed the animals. He had a habit of getting excited over the smallest of things, regardless of how trivial and useless they were to his life. It was just a part of his slightly childish personality; something that he believed he would probably never grow out of, regardless of what he saw in his chosen profession or what age he was. Nix would be sixty and fighting grandkids for their scooter and candy. Maybe it was a sign; maybe he had once been Peter Pan because he sure as hell wasn’t about to grow up. Yeah, Nix could see himself fighting off pirates and living with a fairy and flying through the night sky in search of his missing shadow.
Almost tripping over a child as he stepped away from the sign, Phoenix moved along the path towards the penguins, as the overwhelming urge to see the little things waddle, slide and swim suddenly came over the tall blonde boy. Every time he saw them, he thought about the penguins in Madagascar and ever since that movie came out, he had developed a new love for the creatures, now convinced that they were intelligent beings with the power to take over the world if only they had opposable thumbs.

Payton hated when she was "kicked out" of work. The other manager, the one who actually dealt with people and didn't hideaway in the office on a laptop with a list of acts and show times, had gently told her to get the hell out of the Apollo. Payton had been practically asleep on her desk, and she'd already nearly double-booked one night. So, she'd taken the manager's advice and left for the day. It wasn't like they'd have a big rush that night anyways, so it took away from some of the guilt Pay felt for leaving the employees to do what they may with only one boss around to keep them in line. With nothing to do, however, she was at a loss. She couldn't stay around the apartment by herself, and Paige wouldn't be home for hours. School was always taking up her time during the day, no matter what day of the week it was. And, even if her twin had been home, Payton still probably would've escaped. She couldn't stand to be useless and idle; she needed movement to help keep her restless heart from exploding entirely.
Why she chose the zoo, Pay didn't know. But, she stuffed her camera into her bag, along with her typical notebook and collection of pens, and headed out to Central Park. She could've, and probably should've, taken a cab, but the movement was nice for her cramped legs. Sitting at a desk all day, your legs usually didn't get a lot of chances to have a full range of motion. The rain, however, was putting a damper on her lovely stroll through the crowded streets. Payton could almost hear Paige screaming at her to get inside and curl up next to a heater to attempt to prevent any illnesses. Ever since Scarlet Fever, Payton had always had a weakened immune system which usually meant horrible colds or worse this time of year. And, it also meant an almost-OCD sister. To say the least, their apartment could've passed health inspection with flying colors.
A light shiver rippled through Payton's tiny frame as she passed into the zoo. She kept her camera stuffed safely in her bag, tugging her hood up to try and fend off some of the rain. Paige was definitely going to bitch at her when she showed up at home looking like a drown cat. Oh well. She shook the thoughts off, flicking her eyes up to try and figure out where she'd be going today. They caught on something other than the large, colorful map and instead turned towards the white-blonde head of hair near the penguins. She couldn't hide a smirk as she watched him, hesitantly walking a bit closer to try and see his face. Payton was ninety percent sure this was who she thought it was; there were only so many Nix's in New York, after all.
It was proven true when she caught sight of his profile, and she silently walked up next to him, pulling down her hood and letting the rain pitter-patter against her pinkened cheeks. Payton bumped her shoulder playfully into Nix, giving him a small smile as yet another shiver ran through her. Maybe Paige was right about staying inside while it rained.

Standing there in the rain with no fears or concerns about getting wet, Phoenix knew that he was an odd character to look at. Today, it was probably just how unprepared he was for the dreary New York weather. On other days, it was the fact that he walked around in clothes so baggy that he looked like a 90’s throwback. He didn’t mind it though; Phoenix enjoyed being able to stand out in a crowd and not look like everyone else wandering the streets. Maybe it was part of his Vegas upbringing, but almost everyone he had grown up with had been the same and more often than not, friends had turned up to school wearing more neon than The Strip could boast for itself. They stood out, they were used to the heat more than the cool, crisp winters that Phoenix now struggled with in New York. It amused him to think about how people may perceive him in the bustling city. Did they think he was some drug using lowlife? A person who didn’t care that he was different? Did they wonder about his sexuality? Would any of them actually believe that he was a forensic scientist come summer graduation? Phoenix usually thought about this on the rare occasion when he took the subway. The subway was filled with people staring at each other, even if they were being discreet about it. Everyone questioned the lives of others; it was a natural human instinct whether people accepted it or not. Right now, he assumed that some of the people passing by the gangly young man were wondering if he was one of the zoo attractions or someone who they should keep their kids away from in case he tried to eat them or something else utterly ridiculous. Then again, most days of the week there wasn’t an excited twenty two year old fawning over the penguins like they were Santa Claus.
The last thought still hurt him though and the only thing that truly bothered him in life was when people make the assumption that he was someone who couldn’t be trusted or someone who would only do something to hurt them. However, Phoenix was the kind of guy who could make friends with a rock. Sure, there were people who didn’t get along with him, but it didn’t stop Phoenix from trying to befriend them, despite the eye rolls, the glares and the constant sarcasm they used in an attempt to get him to go away and leave them alone. There wasn’t a bone of hatred in his body; not even a speck of sibling rivalry lasted beyond a typical prank war or summer water bomb fight. The McKenzie boys were all adults now, but once they were in their family home, reunited once more, havoc ensued. It was a wonder their mother could cope with the four of them barrelling down the stairs at 6am in a jumble of limbs and loud voices, screeching about whatever Nathan had done to Phoenix, or what Derek had called Robert. There was never a dull moment around one of them, with Phoenix being the loudest of them all, unfortunately for those who had to deal with him on a daily basis.
He was a loyal friend though and he didn’t care who he hung around with. He had a strange shamble of friends of all shapes and sizes and he loved each and every one of them. He was thinking about them as he stared at the penguins, imagining what life would be like if they were all penguins when he felt someone bump his shoulder, snapping him out of his daydream. He turned to see a slightly soaked Payton smiling up at him and his grin grew larger. “Hey gorgeous!”
He said, wrapping his arms around her and lifting her off the ground, kissing her cheek softly, just like his did with every other of his friends. His smile faded though when he noticed just how wet and cold she looked. “Pay, you’re freezing.” He commented obviously, shrugging his arms from the sleeves of his thick plaid shirt and wrapping it tightly around her slim form before smiling down at her again, feeling refreshed by the feel of the rain beating down on his skin now. OPEN ME UP AND YOU WILL SEE• i'm a gallery of broken hearts •
Payton didn't usually get along well with many people. She was a loner most of the time. Though, it wasn't that hard seeing as she could block out the chaos surrounding her with total ease. A world without sound was almost like watching a silent movie, one Pay still thought she had no right to belong in. It was like floating for her. No voices, no music, no pitter-patter of rain against windows. There was silence, only silence, and she hated it with all of her heart. She had no voice in this world, nothing to make people's eyes light up when they heard or saw her. She was just there, just the plain little burnette who stuck to shadows like they were her only link to life. She was just Payton.
It was why she now refused to return home most of the time. Paige had tried to con her into saving for plane tickets to go back to Derby Acres for Christmas or over the summer for a few weeks. Hell, she'd tried every holiday since the girls had moved. But Pay couldn't go back. In the tiny California town, she was like some form of fallen idol. She'd had everything promised to her one day, then ripped out of her hands. All the people there knew her as "the music girl who'd lost her voice". And, for Payton, it was what she dreamed about being every single second of every day. She wanted normal back, wanted to be able to hear her sister's voice, or talk on a cell phone. She wanted to be able to make friends and laugh or watch movies without captions on them. She wanted the life she'd had for nearly eighteen years, the one she would never be able to have again.
It was rare for Payton to actually, truly smile. Only people like Paige, who knew her twin inside out, were able to shine a small ray of happiness into Pay's world. Though, the first time her sister had introduced Nix to her, Pay had to admit, she had smiled. The guy was just different. Happy. And she envied that, his happiness. When she was around him, she liked to think it rubbed off on her a little. He never failed at getting a tiny smile to grace her lips. Someday, Payton was going to have to thank him for that.
Payton smiled weakly up at him at the surprised look he wore, squirming slightly when he picked her up. She'd grown used to it, though she still didn't like it, but she would tolerate it for Nix's sake. And, she had to admit, it was nice to have someone hug her or place a peck on her cheek. Most people just nodded at her, then talked in what she assumed were overly-loud voices like they could somehow magically get her to hear again. To say the least, Payton got easily annoyed with them.
She hugged his shirt closer to her shoulders, shivering again and giving him another tiny smile. Pay wished he'd hug her again; his arms had been toasty warm compared to the ice she knew her skin was. Part of the reason she hated New York was this terrible, freezing winter. Back in Derby, you didn't get weather like this. She shivered again, wrapping her arms tightly around herself and tugging Nix's shirt closer to herself. It still held some warmth from being on his body, but to her, it felt like a heated blanket.
Pay grabbed one of Nix's hands, using the little game she'd come up with awhile ago for non-signers and when she didn't have or couldn't use a notebook. She'd trace the letters of words into the person's hand to communicate, seeing as she couldn't write and they wouldn't understand her signing. "Why are you out in the rain?" she wrote slowly, looking up at him when she finished and releasing his hand.

Phoenix craved the chaos in his life. He lived for the wild, spontaneous moments that came without cause or reason. He thrived for the thrill of the unplanned, the rush of the sudden and the wonder of how humans could turn any situation into something that spiralled well from their control or order. The need for perfection was something Nix didn’t understand and whilst his career and major meant that he was supposed to be able to clean up and solve the mess left in the aftermath of the same chaos he lived for, he didn’t wish that life was at all different. If things were simple, plain and easy then there would be no fun to be had, and Nix needed that fun; he was the epitome of a clean good time and that was something he doubted would ever change.
Back home, he fitted in perfectly with the high speed, out of control lifestyle that came with Las Vegas. Even living there a person got caught up in the excitement of it and the neon lights back home were so much more to Nix than the bright lights of New York. He’d never stepped foot in a casino with the purpose of gambling and probably never would, but that didn’t mean that he couldn’t love the brightly lit buildings filled with characters who looked like they had jumped right out of the pages of a comic book or stepped out of the screen of a kid’s cartoon. Yes, Nix was truly a Vegas kid, with more of the Nevada state in him than could possibly be healthy for anyone.
When it came to Payton, Nix didn’t even stop to think about her condition. To him, she was another of his friends and he’d treat her exactly the same as he did the others until the day she asked him otherwise. There was one thing that irked Nix and it was when people acted insensitive towards those with a disability; people speaking louder and more exaggeratedly when people were deaf, or speaking in a strange baby voice to those who were mentally disabled. It was the only thing in life that pissed the lanky boy off and whenever he encountered people with such illnesses or conditions, he did his best to treat them as normal as possible, which was, with Nix, a little on the strange side to begin with. That was just his nature though and whilst he’d use Pay’s notebook when she gestured for him to do so, he was more than content to talk to her, even if she couldn’t hear him. There had been a joke when they first met that Pay was actually saved from Nix’s inane rambles that drove some of his friends crazy when he was on a sugar rush of caffeine high.
Nix didn’t even know that his hugs and kisses annoyed anyone and there was a small thought that to tell him otherwise may actually shatter his world. He was a physical guy who loved to show his affection for people through such loving gestures and it took him a long time to understand that those in relationships didn’t exactly approve of his ‘hands on’ friendship with his friends, as innocent at Nix intended it to be. He grinned down at Payton as he moved his damp white-blonde hair from his face and lost all focus on the penguins. As intelligent as he had the potential to be, he could really only concentrate on one thing at a time, no matter how simple a task may be.
He was about to wrap his arm back around her small frame to keep her warm, understanding from Paige how important it was to keep Payton as healthy as possible. As careless as he could be, he was always thinking of others and this was no exception. However, as he was about to move his arm he felt Pay grab his hand, her delicate fingers tracing letters onto his palm. He had to bite his lip from how ticklish it actually felt to him and slowly, he understood what she had been spelling out to him. “I could ask you the same question. As for my answer, rain is a rare treat for me.”
Rain in Vegas came rarely and before he could enjoy the sensation of the cool droplets, it would usually dry up again. It was one thing he did like about New York and Nix, strangely, enjoyed the icy rain on his skin. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Payton <3 WORDS! 795 OUTFIT! You can fly! Payton had one person who kept her healthy most of the time: Paige. If Pay had been on her own, the girl would've probably been sick ninety percent of the year. She didn't like to keep track of what she ate, or remember to wear extra layers when it was cold outside. It didn't phase her at all most days. All she did was float. From bed to the shower, to work, to dinner, and then back to her bed again to spend another night drifting in and out of fitful slumbers. Taking vitamins, eating healthy foods that would keep her immune system up, and staying out of the freezing rain were things Payton didn't consider. That was Paige. But, then again, Pay had been the more "reckless" one out of the twins for all of their lives. Though, loving music and performing at school or community dances didn't count as "reckless" or "dangerous" to a lot of people. For Pay though, it was. It was unusual, different, strange; she had been. Now, however, now she just drifted.
If she was being frank, Payton hated it when people treated her differently after finding out she was deaf. It was part of the reason she refused to wear pointless, useless hearing aids that did nothing for her. The little machines gave away the fact that Pay was "different", though her family kept trying to tell her it wasn't a bad thing to be different. For her though, it was. It was absolutely terrible to be different, strange, unusual. People treated her differently than what they had before her disability had begun. But, no, she never called it a "disability" because to her, it wasn't. She wasn't unable to do anything she didn't want. Well, anything that mattered. Wanting to hear her music again was a different story entirely.
Still, being deaf didn't stop her from anything or make her different than the other people in New York. Payton just had one more obstacle to overcome in everything she did; one not many people understood or could handle dealing with. It made her stronger than them. That was what she told herself when she was having one of her harder days. Those people, the ones who smiled and laughed and could hear the sound of honking horns or jackhammers at 6 a.m., they had it easy. Her, on the other hand, she had to take one more step that made her tougher than everybody else.
Payton had taken many guesses as to why Paige had introduced Nix to her. One of them being that she knew the boy would do some good for Pay's darker take on life these days. Another was that she'd have yet another "spy" around the city that would make sure Pay was being safe and not doing stupid things. Like walking out in the freezing rain merely because she had a dire need to turn to ice. Pay's eyes stayed on Nix's lips as he spoke, reading the words as he said them. She shivered once more before grabbing his hand again, writing away already. "I was heading inside," she wrote, biting the inside of her lip and nodding towards the building that stood behind him. Inside was a little cafe and a gift shop, places Pay would've already been hiding as she stared out at the dreary rain. "Aren't you cold?" she wrote, releasing his hand and turning her eyes up to him to wait for an answer.

Nix, well, even he found it hard to describe himself. He was hyperactive, constantly on a sugar rush and wore so much neon that he looked like a throwback from the eighties on a good day. He liked to stand out and whilst he didn’t fight for attention, he also didn’t shy away from it either. Throughout his life, people had admired his confidence for reasons that Nix didn’t even understand. To be frank, Nix would never even describe himself as confident seeing as how he was the same with everyone, regardless of who they were or how old they were. Hell, he recalled one occasion when Meg had to jump in the way after he almost kissed their professor after a long discussion on forensic pathology and the benefits of introducing it into the field worldwide. Needless to say, Nix forgot the boundaries of student and teacher and things almost got a little awkward thanks to his strangely affectionate way of leaving people.
He loved things being unique though, and when he saw the girls crossing the courtyard all dressed in the same designer brand, with matching hairstyles and bubblegum smiles, he felt a little part of his heart break. He never understood the concept of sheep or why anyone would want to be part of a blind herd that followed their leader in an almost cult-like fashion. Standing individually, proud of your own beliefs and full of quirks - both mental and physical - were what made a person who they were and it saddened him when he met people who weren’t proud of that fact or who pretended to be someone else because they thought that to be themselves just wasn’t good enough. It was horrible, the amount of peer pressure placed on teenagers today, and not just the girls either. Nix knew plenty of guys who had been forced to conform to some macho stereotype just because of locker room teasing and taunts. Thankfully for him, he couldn’t be macho even if he tried. He had been lanky, tall and skinny his whole life and with the thick crop of unnatural white blonde hair on his head, he leaned more towards the ‘indie kid’ than the high school jock with the letterman jacket and trophy cheerleader girlfriend to hang on his arm at every popular opportunity. However, at the same time, he’d never let the taunts bother him and considering he was breaking six foot at the age of sixteen, not many of the jocks would bother with him either, slightly confused by his height and lack of brawn.
Granted, neither of them things had greatly changed his life, though Meg had occasionally used his height for her advantage when they were at a gig or show of sorts and she couldn’t see something, but aside from that, it was just another inherited trait that had skipped a generation and chosen him to re-emerge in. The only downside was having to look down at so many people when he was with them. It hurt his neck after a while, but he found it rude not to look at them when he was socialising. If his mother had managed to drum one thing into her absent minded, youngest child, it was the power of manners and basic social skills. He studied the movement on his hand again, glad that spending more and more time with the brunette was making this easier for him to grasp now. “Then that is where we’ll go!”
He grabbed her hand in his and then pumped the air, striking a brief superman pose before running in long strides towards the café, dragging Payton behind him in a goofy fashion. “Cold? Me? Nah. I have thick skin from all those summers trekking through the desert searching for signs of life.” He joked. In fact, the ‘treks’ had been part of the fun of his youth with his brothers and friends as they looked for snakes and other such creatures. His mother hated it whenever they camped out there, calling them foolish, but they were boys and it was what boys did! [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! OPEN ME UP AND YOU WILL SEE• i'm a gallery of broken hearts •
Payton had taken on the job of living life through the shadows. She didn't go to parties unless phyiscally dragged, and she rarely was out with the select amount of friends she did manage to make. Being in public was slightly scary for her for more than one reason. First off, you never knew what you'd run into in the city, especially in New York, and Pay was scared she wouldn't be able to hear trouble coming or to answer questions of her heroes when they possibly saved her from the scum who had taken advantage of the innocent young lady. She didn't know what she'd do in a situation like that, and, honestly, she didn't want to find out. But, it was also easier for her to blend when she was on her own and not in cramped crowds. She could just float on the out-skirts of society and be left in peace, instead of having to deal with the various loads of drama that sprung up on "normal" people her age. Normal people who went to school or who had actual goals for themselves. Normal people like her sister. She envied Paige in that, for sure.
But, then again, Pay tried to be normal on most occasions. She didn't venture out too far onto that limb, however, mainly because of the insecurities she'd never in a million years admit to having. Like when people, specifically guys, stared at her weird. It was like she was some sort of exotic animal to them once they discovered her lack of hearing and, frankly, Pay hated it. She hadn't been able to find someone who didn't mind, not even those people who were her friends now. At first, even they had stared, but, eventually, they'd gotten over it and learned that, though she couldn't speak, she had a strong voice hidden underneath the silent exterior.
Pay blinked as he grabbed her hand, barely being able to see and make-out his words before he was pulling some superman worthy pose. A smile tickled her lips as he dragged her along towards the warm looking building. But, it quickly vanished as she noticed his lips moving. Payton couldn't see them as she was trying to walk, keep her hood up, and stay in step with him all at the same time. It annoyed her more than anything else when that happened, and not just with him. She'd be having a conversation with someone and they'd turn to a different angle so they could do something, leaving her without the faintest clue towards whatever the hell they'd been saying. The annoyance was never aimed at the other person, however. It was always towards herself. Because, after all, it wasn't those innocent humans' faults her body was so "special".
She hurried through the doors of the building, letting out a breath of relief as the warmth eveloped her drenched, shivering body. Nix's jacket was helping to keep some of her body heat, but it was also heavy thanks to the rain that had soaked it, as well. Pay turned her head up to Nix, nodding in the direction of some tables near the food court. A hot pretzel, or maybe some pizza, and a hot chocolate sounded absolutely wonderful to her right about now.

To Nix, moving to New York had been no big deal. It was just swapping one great city for another and at the end of the day both New York and Las Vegas were primarily the same; big cities, cramped with buildings taller than the eye could see and filled with all kinds of characters, some friendly, some not so much. Maybe that was where their similarities ended, but Phoenix really wasn’t one to focus on the small details. He was all about the bigger picture and to him; it was just another city. And he loved it! The city, for him, symbolised life and provided all the answers to everything if you knew where to look. He appreciated the solitude of the desert to and often ventured out there when he was home just to have some ‘Nix time’. Even the most hardcore fan of the city needed to escape sometime and in the desert it really was just him and the thick night sky looming over him…usually until one of his brothers or friends came up behind him and pummelled him with the first thing they got their hands on!
That didn’t usually suffice if they wanted to stop Nix though, and the hyperactive white blonde giant of a man continued to go running around as though he had escaped from an asylum. At least he’d one day be able to turn around and tell the world that he’d lived life to the fullest! He wasn’t the most serious of guys, hell, he was rarely serious at all, but that was just the way he was programmed. He was the class clown, the guy who aimed to make people laugh and smile rather than worry them with every day problems that were so less important than they seemed at the time. He was always the sunshine, the optimist and the happy-go-lucky kid who got caught up in his gangly legs and often ended up on the floor, laughing at his own clumsy nature.
Yes, Nix could definitely get carried away at times, frightfully so, but he only ever had the best intentions at heart and he didn’t even pause to think that some people may find his antics and reactions a little on the darker side of sane. He also forgot, sometimes, when he was with Payton that she couldn’t quite keep up with him the same way Meg could. Hang on…even Meg struggled to keep up sometimes when Nix went on one of his really hyperactive rants about superheroes and Harry Potter - he spoke at the speak of light and words jumbled into others and it became unbearable for anyone to try and understand what he was saying! He forgot sometimes that Payton was even deaf. To him, it didn’t matter; it never mattered. She was just always Payton, the quiet one and he had plenty of friends who were just as quiet (although mainly it was because they barely got a chance to speak with Nix around).
Once they were inside he glanced down in time to see Pay gesturing to the tables by the food court. He hadn’t eaten much all day and the thought of a hot cheese burger sounded heavenly right about now. “Gotcha baby!”
He said with a huge grin, grabbing her hand again and moving a little more calmly now towards the tables, shaking the droplets of water from his now flat hair.
