She’d been stuck in “RhiWorld” again, sitting at her work station completely engrossed in the next few pages of her latest comic. She was almost ready to start inking but being the slight perfectionist that she was, she had to fix a couple things first. It never failed that when she took a little trip to “RhiWorld”, as her brother coined it, everything in the outside world just faded away until there was nothing but what she was doing. Sometimes, it was a great thing; she got her work done faster. And other times, such as this, it was the worst trait the young artist had. This time, for instance, she’d zoned out so well, she didn’t hear the thunder roll until now; now that she was finished with her corrections.
She had barely sat back to take a quick break to stretch, get something to drink and maybe something to eat when the loud crack started Rhiannon so badly she literally jumped right out of her chair with a high pitched squeak noise; the real world had hit her once again. Rhiannon wasn’t the biggest fan on thunder storms. Rain showers, she was okay, after all a bit of rain never hurt no one. But as soon as lightning struck and thunder rolled, Rhi turned into a big scaredy cat. No one in her entire family knew why she was so scared of the storms but whenever the rain fell hard, Rhiannon’s heart raced right out of her chest and she had the hardest time breathing. It was like a panic attack times ten. Rhi gripped the edge of her desk so hard, her knuckles were white and her eyes were shut so tight, she was seeing dots behind her closed lids. But she would have chosen, had chosen that over hearing the thunder crash and seeing the lightning brighten up the darkened sky.
Rhiannon felt like she was glued to the spot; paralyzed with fear. It was like she feared the lightning would hit and shatter her windows and either take her away with the wind, or get hit with all the debris or something. There were plenty of theories going around among her family. Her mother, at one point, thought it was just the volume that scared her. But the Upper East Side princess had started listening to a few scream bands and a couple old school punk bands so the noise had been ruled out. Another loud crack of thunder sounded and Rhiannon finally moved; down and under her artists’ desk. It was useless for any sense of protection but just being under it had her breathing start to return to normal.
She wished her brother were there; hell, she wished anyone was there so she wouldn’t have to be alone. But Reese was, oh hell, she had no clue where her he was or what time it was. The last time she’d spoken to him he’d been off to school, but she’d zoned and wasn’t exactly sure how much time had passed. It could have been minutes, or more likely, it had been hours. The lights in the apartment hadn’t gone out yet but chances were, with a storm like that raging, they would. Rhiannon kept a blanket in the room in case she got cold. She could crawl over to the closet and grab it; that would make her feel better. And she took comfort in the fact that she hadn’t really screamed or started crying yet. That was always a plus. Slowly, she crawled across the room, pulled herself up and trying her hardest to ignore the noises coming from just outside her window, snatched the blanket from the closet shelf and ran back across the room to the comfort of her easel desk, hoping Reese would come home soon, or even their uncle stop by for a visit.

Reese enjoyed his major, he really did, but eight hour lab practicals were enough to push him to the end of his tether. During practicals, he rarely got to sit down and take a break, which meant he was on his feet all day and his legs, despite medication, were determined to hate him, cramping at every opportunity he tried to do something long distant. Luckily, today, they hadn’t been too bad and he’d managed to sail through the class without too much fuss. That didn’t make it alright though and Reese was relieved when the time came for him to start the brisk walk home. His truck was in the garage, having repairs done after a pretty nasty fenderbender left it needed a professional hand.
The grim sky did not look promising and he flashed his eyes upwards, examining the chances of rain as though it was so easy to predict. Slowly, he began the walk back to the apartment, wondering if he should text Rhi to see if she fancied him picking up some take-out on the way home. Reese didn’t feel in the mood for cooking tonight and if his sister was still as engrossed in her work as she seemed to be when he had returned to grab the keys he had forgotten, then he doubted that she had even considered food yet today, or ever would, unless he reminded her. Sometimes he worried about Rhiannon and the amount of time she spent in a trance with her art pretty much being the only thing she was focused on. He wondered how different it would be if he wasn’t sharing the apartment and reminding her of the important rituals she often forgot all about when drawing. He wanted her to have more of a social life, find a way for the world to meet the girl behind the art. As much as it pained him to think about, there would come a time when he wouldn’t be able to look after her like he did now and he wanted there to be someone to pick his sister up when that time came.
Sidestepping the chaos on the street, he felt that twinge at the back of his left leg and winced slightly, before pushing it to the back of his mind. He would be home soon and then it wouldn’t be a problem; he could sit down, relax and give his body the rest it needed before another gruelling physiotherapy session in the morning, before his afternoon lectures. Then, he felt it; the cold drop of winter rain on his face. Groaning to himself, he zipped up his jacket, pulling the hood over his messy dark hair, before quickening his pace and aiming to get home as quickly as possible. The last thing he wanted was to come down with the flu and he had hardly planned for the bed weather of the day, choosing just a thin jacket, rather than a more promising waterproof or thicker coat. Soon, he heard that familiar rumble of thunder followed almost immediately by the deafening crack and flash of lightning. Great, a thunderstorm. Now, they’d probably have no lighting or electricity in the house for the rest of the evening and Reese had been determined to read some journal articles online before bed. Wait…thunderstorms. His eyes widened and he remembered the bottle bought red-head probably cowering in their apartment. Usually he was home when the weather turned sour, but not today, because today, his damn truck had to be in for repairs!
He picked up the pace, now running as best as he could between the people on the street, his left leg cramping rather badly, forcing him to limp, but he was determined to keep up the speed as he neared their building, the window in plain site as he moved up the street, almost crashing into a vendor as he sidestepped a child who had escaped the screaming mother only seconds behind. Reese was soon at their door after a rather risky elevator ride (if the power cut…) and turned his key quickly in the lock, dragging his leg behind him as he ripped off his sodden jacket and dumped it thoughtlessly on the floor. “Rhi?” Reese’s voice was loud, echoing around the otherwise silent apartment, his eyes roving the room until he saw the blanketed bundle under the artist desk his sister was usually at. “Rhi, I’m home now. Come on out.” He really couldn’t bend down to coax her out, so hoped his words were enough as he leaned against the wall, putting his weight on his right leg, to give his cramping left a break. For now, he had to focus on calming his sister down before she had a panic attack.

She was scared, huddled up under the drawing desk, wrapped in her throw and shaking like a leaf. She was usually so strong, so brave and as soon as the sound of thunder hits her ears, she willingly jumped into the role of little girl again. She knew, she knew it was an irrational fear. The water wasn’t going to hurt her, thunder was just a noise, but she couldn’t help herself. She almost wished she would have stayed completely clueless about the weather forecast for the day. She could have stayed in RhiWorld blissfully unaware of the fact there was a storm raging just outside her studio window, while she sketched, then inked the pages in front of her. She did have that deadline that absolutely needed to be met. Though she did usually have a bit more free rein with them, she didn’t like to keep the editors and the press waiting longer than absolutely necessary.
She’d have to text Nix when she was finished, get his take on things, as well as Reese, but she could just yell down the hall for him. And where was he? She didn’t think his classes ran this late, but then, she also didn’t know what time it was. Not to mention the fact that there had been a couple times he’d been M.I.A. when she’d finally emerged from her little lair to ask him something. She didn’t think much of it, of course, she was his little sister, not his maid or his mother. And Reese was a big boy; she knew he could take care of himself, even on his clumsy days. Mostly, those times he hadn’t been around she figured he’d taken another class or lecture, or having a life and was out with friends or a hot date. She was a terrible sister sometimes; completely absentminded, but that was her.
Rhi promised the storm god’s or whichever deity chose to listen to the plea, if Reese came home soon, she’d be more of a little sister, annoy him by peppering him with questions any normal baby sister would ask when he didn’t come home when he said so. Her head snapped at a noise. She thought it was the front door but she couldn’t be entirely sure, the thunder was loud and sounded closer than before, that had to mean the storm was passing, right? God, she sure as hell hoped so. This heart stopping terror was something Rhiannon wanted gone. She wanted to be able to breathe calmly, normally when the rain started to fall; wishing it would just be a simple shower and not an all out torrential downpour. Damn, why didn’t she race to the living room, where she had more furniture to cower around?
And then she heard her name being called and she inched forward a little bit, still hiding under the drawing desk she was usually glued to. Good. Her mind could finally relax and get off the subject of serial killers, stalkers and thieves breaking in the door. She stayed under the table until she saw Reese, soaking wet, leaning against the doorframe. She didn’t think about why he wasn’t crouched down in front of her, trying to pull her free; it didn’t matter. Rhiannon sprang from her spot, running across the small space and plowed right into Reese’s chest, shaking still. “You’re home,” she said, repeating his words like a parrot. She didn’t want to shed the tears that threatened just behind her closed lids. She’d held them off for this long, however long that was, she could go without shedding them, right? Probably not, she thought bitterly, but refused to let them fall.

Reese didn’t know what it was about thunderstorms that made Rhiannon so petrified. He couldn’t remember a part of their past where something horrific had been associated with the harsh weather, but for as long as he could remember, Rhi had always freaked out at the low rumble of thunder and the blinding flash of white lightning as it streaked outside their windows. Her coming to find safety in him wasn’t anything new or bizarre either, though he was forever puzzled by how his little sister could be snapped out of everything by a short thunderstorm. It didn’t bother him one bit and the only thing he associated with them was her and his protective instincts ushered him to help comfort her, even if he didn’t really need to protect her from the elements when they were safely confined to their apartment.
When they were younger, their parents said she would grow out of it, but clearly, she hadn’t and Reese didn’t mind that. She always came running to him and he got to play big brother, even know when she was old enough to look after herself, though he did debate that with himself from time to time. Spaced out Rhi was cause for concern, but terrified Rhi could be handled simply enough. Still, Reese wished he had had his truck, rather than having to run across the city and hinder his health; something that probably would cause his physiotherapist to lecture him in the morning, but Reese knew the pain would be worth it. Rhi would always come before everything, including his screwed up lower limbs and today, she had needed him to be home with her when that storm struck, so racing, hurting himself was the next best thing he could do her, though he obviously wouldn’t share that detail with her. Reese’s pride was far too extreme for anything like that and whilst his doctor repeatedly mentioned telling his family, the young chemist chose to disagree. He was the big brother who was supposed to do the looking after, not be looked after.
She was like a scared animal, hiding under the desk and Reese barely had time to recognise what was happening when she jumped from her makeshift den and ran straight at him, bowling them both over when she crashed into his chest. He hadn’t had the chance to brace himself and his left leg was no going to cooperate with Rhiannon’s ambush, so the siblings fell to the floor as another crack of lightning struck outside. He let out an inhuman sound of shock and pain as they fell, biting his lip as he moved his left leg to the side, hoping the throbbing sensation would vanish quickly, before Rhi freaked out more. He hugged her close and smirked playfully, trying to make her forget about the horrible weather outside. “Have you put on weight? I used to be able to catch you when you ran at me.” He teased, knowing it would probably earn him a slap. However, he did need an excuse for the fall and that was the best he could come up with, thanks to the pain.

Most people, girls at least, probably wouldn’t think they were safe if they were all alone in their apartments when they heard a noise outside the room they were in. Normally, they’d think someone had broken in to rob the place or attack them or even worse, kill them because they were there while they were robbing the place. But not Rhi; oh, no that’d be too ordinary a train of thought for her. No, she automatically thinks its help. Granted, as of yet, she hadn’t been wrong. And since the building was a secure one, she hadn’t needed to stray far from that those thoughts; unless it was for her comics. If only she’d checked for the weather before she went to work, then maybe she would have been cowering on the couch when the sky started to darken. But no, she had gone about her day oblivious to the coming showers.
With Reese around, she was okay; she wasn’t as afraid because someone else was there to protect her from harm’s way. She was that scared, she hadn’t even registered the fact they fell to the floor with the force of her running into him at a speed she hadn’t thought was all that fast. Then again, when she was scared, she didn’t notice much of anything. “Didn’t I tell you? I’m secretly a dinosaur! Rawr!” she said, giggling, snuggling closer to Reese’s side before sitting up and moving away just enough so her big brother could follow suit. She was alright now. Those tears still wanted to fall, but her big brother was there to keep her safe; those tears would dry back up. In fact, she was quite proud of herself, for her small accomplishment. She hadn’t shed a single tear while she was alone with the storm brewing just outside the windows and walls of the apartment she shared with the older Webb child.
Her fear was bothersome to say the least. She knew it was a pain for her brother to take care of her. After all she was all grown up, and should have been able to take care of herself just fine. But, she was still very much a child when it came to the storms, and she really hated to be a bother for her brother. He was young and handsome; he should be out, playing the role of college kid. Partying and having fun with friends. But a small part of her was so pleased that Reese still took care of her that she’d always welcome it whenever he wanted to baby her a little bit. He was good at keeping her mind off the storms brewing outside. “You’re soaked,” she stated obviously, actually taking in his appearance. His hair was stuck all around his face. His coat hadn’t helped much either, but at least his shirt was only damp. Rhiannon was completely oblivious to anything being wrong, other than the weather outside the windows she was further away from. And she was thinking, not for the first time, that her studio seriously needed some loving of the feng shui variety; as in move her desk as far away from the windows as she could possibly get it.

Reese never considered moving out of the apartment he shared with Rhi. It may have seemed strange for them to live together, to some people, but Reese adored his little sister and he was slightly worried about what may happen to her if they were living apart. She was naïve in so many ways still, because of how closeted a life she seemed to lead and Reese didn’t think he could live with the guilt if anything happened to her in his absence. Not that he wanted to have his independence in his own apartment. He got plenty more than enough living with Rhi anyway and it wasn’t like the pair tripped over each other or got in the way all the time. In fact, Reese found that living with his sister gave him more freedom whilst also decreasing the need to be around others, especially considering his condition. He may not be planning on telling her any time soon about the BMD, but if anything did happen, she would be around to help, even if she was off in her own little world.
At least Rhiannon seemed to be alright now, even if Reese wasn’t entirely comfortable in this new position. So long as she was calm and not freaking out any more about the thunderstorm anymore, he could deal with his own discomfort and had done for a few years now. Smiling at his sister he playfully tickled her side as she snuggled closer for a moment. “Ah, well that explains the loud snoring each night then.” He mocked, pulling himself up into sitting position, his left leg still angled to ease the cramp that was slowly easing off now that the twenty two year old chemist had stopped moving, or more specifically, had stopped running up the street as though he was racing away from King Kong or some other creature intent on destroying the city. Leaning back on his hands he looked at his sister with a look only a big brother would know of. “So, are we okay now, Miss Rhi?” He asked, knowing that she hated storms, but wanting to make sure there was no lasting damage done by the intense weather in his absence.
“And what do you want to do now? I’m feeling like we need some brotherly, sisterly bonding time.” They were as close as brother and sister could possibly be, but Reese felt like he had been so swamped with college work and his job lately that he hardly had time to just sit and spend with Rhi, especially when she had those comics to work on too. Plus, this way, she wouldn’t be too focused on the storm if it continued to rage outside the safety of their apartment. At the obvious fact stated by his sister, Reese looked down at his clothes, grimacing at the way they clung to his skin now, the fabric sodden. “Yeah, the truck’s back in the shop. Some freshman backed his car into it the other day so I had to walk home from campus.” He didn’t mention the fact that he had ran the second he realised the storm was about to hit, just to make sure she was okay. He wasn’t sure if Rhi would like to hear that or not.

Rhi knew she should get over her fears and grow up a little bit. She acted too much like a six year old for anyone’s safety. But in her line of work, it was better to have fun with life than be serious and dull. Her hair said it all for her really and she was only eighteen, there was still plenty of time for her to adjust some more. Either way, she wasn’t going to worry about anything for a while yet. She had the freedom of living alone, and the knight in shining armor she needed when thunder struck the city that never slept. Some would probably say the siblings were far too close, but they’d only really had each other growing up. To Rhi, not having her big brother around to remind her there was an entire world of things to see and people to meet, would be odd.
Rhi shook her head, rolling her eyes. “That’s not me. That’s Granny Rodriguez next door. She’s a real beast,” the young bottled red head said seriously. The older woman treated Rhiannon like her own granddaughter, stopping in every now and then to pass along baked treats and ask how everything was. Rhiannon honestly thought the old woman thought she and her brother were orphans or something. She never mentioned their family, never asked how their parents were, and always smiled sadly if Rhi mentioned anything that would insinuate still having parents, then patted Rhi’s shoulder and told her to bring the Tupperware container back when she and her brother were finished with it. She didn’t actually know much about the older woman, except that she was ancient, loved baking and soap operas, and her grandson was the one who bought the apartment for her. She’d never met this man, but figured he couldn’t be half bad if he was willing to shell out the cash for the apartment he’d set his dear old grandma up in.
Rolling her eyes, Rhiannon nodded. “Yeah, I’m okay,” she said running her fingers through her messy hair. While she’d been holed up under the desk, she’d thought a lot about work. It always seemed to calm her down a bit. Oh, not enough that she could be alone during a storm, but enough that she didn’t faint. Rhiannon’s brows drew together as she thought about that. “We could watch a movie. The power hasn’t gone out yet so it might not at all,” she suggested, hoping she was right and the power would stay on. “We could have chocolate pop tarts and have a movie marathon?” she said wiggling her eyebrows. “But it’s your turn to choose, so anything with superheroes is out, right?” she said, laughing. It often amazed even her how she could draw superheroes and villains all night and day, dream about them and talk about them and then go and watch a movie about them; and love it. She should have been sick of them by the time she finished working with the characters to watch them, but she never was.
The bottled red head rolled her eyes again and she stood up off the floor and went about dusting off invisible dirt. She was tiny by comparison to her brother, but she still held her hand out to help him up, though it was basically a useless action. “And that is why I don’t go to school, stupid drivers,” she said, shaking her head. “I’ll go get the food and soda, you go change and I’ll see you in the living room in 10 minutes,” she instructed as soon as Reese was on his feet. Satisfied with the orders she set herself, she went straight down the hall for the kitchen.

As the months flew by and Reese’s visits to the hospitals became more habitual than they should really feel to be, he did start to wonder if he should be pushing Rhi a little more, making her more aware that he wouldn’t always be there for her. He didn’t like the thought of pushing his sister and forcing her to accept the responsibilities she didn’t think twice of, not without giving her a legitimate reason, but at the same time, he wasn’t ready to tell anyone in his family about his condition. Luckily, he’d been an adult when the diagnosis had occurred and so he didn’t have to have his parents or uncle in the room when the doctors explained the situation to him. If everyone had started fussing around him, Reese didn’t think he could have handled it with a cool head. His independence was all he really had going for him and his pride refused to let him adopt a defeatist attitude, despite his diagnosis not suggested the happiest of futures for the young man.
Reese chuckled at his sister’s serious comment. The woman next door was friendly enough and there were definitely worse neighbours out there, but Reese was a little bothered by the sad smiles she would shoot his way whenever they bumped in the hallway and he was struggling with the grocery bags or rubbing one of his aching legs. He didn’t know what she thought happened behind the closed doors of the Webb residence, but frankly, Reese was certain she was far off the mark. “Maybe you should make a dragon based on her for the next comic.” He joked, subtly stretching his legs out as the pain finally started to ease from his muscles.
He stroked his fingers over his stubbly facial hair as though in deep philosophical thought and then nodded his head, snapping his fingers at the same time. “Sounds like a plan to me, and yes, superheroes are out.” Reese loved a good superhero movie as much as the next guy did, but the siblings owned plenty more movies than just those with men in tight clothes and rippling muscles. “How are we feeling about a comedy fest?” He suggested, thinking through the large collection that they kept neatly shelved near their small entertainment centre. Reese was in the mood for Adam Sandler or Ben Stiller; someone whose comedy prowess never faded over the years. Rhi was right though, he did need to get changed first. Taking her hand, which was tiny in comparison to his own, he pushed himself to his feet, thankful that his legs were having a relatively good day and cooperating now, even after the agony he’d put them through to make sure Rhi was safe and okay. He smirked at his sister as he flexed out his feet to check that everything was still working. “And is that the excuse you’re going to give mom and dad if they ever find out?” He said with a playful tone in his voice. He didn’t care that Rhi didn’t go to school. All he wanted was for his sister to be happy with her choices in life, but he knew his parents wouldn’t see it that way at first.
Reese slipped into his bedroom and threw the wet clothes on the floor, deciding to deal with them later. He grabbed a t-shirt from his drawers and slipped into the pyjama bottoms that were reserved for lounging around the apartment when he was feeling extremely lazy. Not to worried about his wet hair, Reese soon emerged from his bedroom and grabbed a random selection of movies from the shelf, sticking the disc of whatever one his hand closed around first into the DVD player before falling back on the sofa, throwing his feet up on the coffee table in a manner that would anger his mom if she was there. “I’m waiting, Little Red.” He called in a sing-song voice, just to annoy Rhi.

Rhi laughed, clapping her hands together. “That is a great idea! Maybe not a dragon though. I don’t know how I’d get that to work into the story line,” she mused before snapping her fingers and pointing at her brother. “Oh, I know! I’ll just start a new one! A medieval-esque storyline set in modern times!” The wheels were turning already and she’d completely forgotten there was a storm raging just outside the apartment. Her brother was good at that; getting her mind far away from what was happening outside. She knew how much Reese did for her and she was grateful for it, because she, for whatever reason, was just not ready to face this particular fear.
The bottled ginger snapped her fingers together “Damn,” she said, the corner of her mouth quirking upwards. She didn’t care what they watched. She was swimming in super heroes on a daily basis; a night without them would be a welcomed break. Rhi’s brows drew together as she went through a mental list of the comedies the siblings had on their shelves. “Are we talking new comedy like Sandler or are we talking old like Monty Python?” she asked, curious. She loved both and the Monty Python troupe was her ultimate favourite but she could also sit down with the other and cry from laughter, so it didn’t matter which, really.
Rhi didn’t even have to think about Reese’s question, she nodded her head. “Yes. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it like glue,” she said, laughing. If their parent’s ever found out about their daughter’s choice, they’d fly off the handle. It wouldn’t matter that Rhi was happy and doing something she loved, she hadn’t gone to school, she hadn’t “made something of herself” in the same way they had. It didn’t matter that her comics were translated into a dozen languages, she was invited to conventions all over the world, all they’d see was their little girl sitting in a room all day drawing; not a career or a good lifestyle choice. So Rhi strived to make sure her parent’s never found out. She felt bad, but it was lie or get herself thrown into something she never wanted for herself.
In the kitchen she had to dig around for a minute to find a tray to carry everything out in one go, but after that it was a breeze getting things together. She tossed a bag of popcorn into the microwave so they’d have something else to eat besides pop tarts. She tossed a box of chocolate pop tarts on the tray, found and filled a bowl with the popcorn and grabbed a few cans of soda from the refrigerator so they wouldn’t have to pause the movie in the middle. “And you’ll wait until I’m finished!” she called back, chuckling. Finally she had the tray ready and she balanced it carefully, taking it out to the living room.
She set it down on the table before dropping onto the sofa. “What did you pick?” she asked, reaching forward for the pop tart box and taking out a silver wrapped package. She pulled her feet up in front of her on the edge of the cushion before dragging the throw down off the back and shaking it open with her free hand. Having troubles, she stuck the silver package between her teeth and unraveled the blanket before tossing a small portion of it across her legs and leaving the rest for her brother if he wanted it. Now that she was comfortable, she tore open the package and waited for the movie to play.
