Denver hadn’t really neglected his work while his sister was there but he hadn’t spent a whole lot of extra time there either. He checked in with all his patients and signed what he needed to and that was it. But Sarah had kept busy while he’d been away and after she’d “accidentally on purpose” read his text messages, his credit card got a hell of a lot more action than it had in months. She’d gone out on two occasions and bought things Denver didn’t think he needed. He was now the owner of throw pillows, a random blanket that wasn’t to leave the living room, and a bunch of candles and things; she’d even gone out and put together a fake flower arrangement. He could only sigh the first time he’d seen it all and shake his head. He hadn’t brought Lexi to his apartment yet, but it was a good thing she knew about Sarah all the same, or he’d have some serious explaining to do.
He was just finishing up the last of the day’s paperwork when the pager he wore went off. He didn’t bother checking it right then; it was only for one thing, a child in trouble. He jumped from his chair and raced out of the office and down to the pediatric ward, where his patients were. Almost there, he finally checked his pager, for the room number and swore uncharacteristically. He hated when there was a call at all, and now it was a call for a seven year old girl. He went through the actions, quickly working with the nurses to get the little girl stable and under control. He should have known there would be complications; she wasn’t one of the better patients and even with those cases, there was always a chance something like this would happen with all those medications.
It took the group nearly a half hour to stabilize her and another before Denver would even leave her room but when he did, he didn’t want to be at the hospital; or alone. It just went to show that life was too short to be shy. He told the nurses to call his cell phone if anything happened again, and made them promise before he left the hospital. He had one person who kept running through his mind when everything was happening; and as he drove through the streets of New York, he wasn’t completely aware that he was headed straight to her house until he was stopped outside the building he’d dropped her off at after their last date; it was also where he’d picked her up looking stunning as always.
Denver cut the engine, got out and walked through the front door and straight to the elevator. He had to wait but the doors finally opened and he stepped inside. He hit the button, leaned back against the wall and prayed she was home so he wouldn’t have made the trip in vain. The doors opened again smoothly and Denny stepped out just to take a handful of steps and knock on Lexi’s apartment door for the second time ever. Even as his knuckles connected to the door in front of him, he was thinking how much of a bad idea this really was. Lexi wouldn’t want to hear about his bad day. She was probably busy with school work or something. Hell, she probably wasn’t even home! He was running his fingers through his messy hair when the door opened.

Lexi had had a rather relaxing day, as far as days went. She had morning lectures and a lunchtime seminar before she went into the depths of Manhattan to grab lunch with an old high school friend who was home from UCLA for a few days. It had been a nice hour, catching up and reminiscing about days gone by before saying her goodbyes and making her way back into the city to her yoga class. Yoga had been Lexi’s choice of exercise of choice after the New Year had passed. She liked to feel healthy and keep in some form of shape and it was not only beneficial but it was relaxing too for the young historian, providing her with some calm within her sometimes busy world. It kept her happy.
Well, it was one of the things that kept her happy. It was fairly obvious to everyone who knew Lexi that there was something happening in her life that was putting the smile on her face and it didn’t take most folk a lot to figure out that it had to have something to do with a guy, only Lexi kept the details to herself, not even telling Chelsea about the handsome doctor who she had been out with just a few times. She liked the idea of keeping Denver to herself. He was something different in her life and he made her laugh and smile when days were bad; obvious from the start when the ball had hit her in the head. She didn’t want the girls she knew pressing for details or her family hounding him if he turned up at the apartment. It was selfish in some ways, but she wanted to keep their dates to herself.
She arrived back to her apartment just as Chelsea was getting ready to leave for some dinner and party being thrown for one of her colleagues. She bid her sister farewell and moved to her bathroom, hopping in the shower to refresh herself after yoga. It was going to be a quiet end to the day and a relaxing night for the twenty two year old or at least that was what she had planned. She slipped into her pyjamas once the hot water had soothed her muscles and her hair was shampooed conditioned and felt soft again. She blasted the dark locks dry with her hairdryer and brushed it into style before sitting indian style on her bed, pulling the heavy bag of textbooks up with her. She didn’t have any assignments due, but Lexi was planning on doing some extra reading and making a few extra notes; it never hurt to be prepared when it came to college or life in general.
Lexi was in the middle of reading through one of the chapters on European historical artefacts, scribbling down a few notes in elegant cursive handwriting in one of her binders every now and then, when she heard a sharp knock at the door that startled her slightly; she was so engrossed in the text that it took her a few seconds to react. Figuring it was another of Chelsea’s parcels arriving, Lexi moved casually through their apartment, humming softly to herself as she grabbed the lock and twisted it, pulling it open with a polite smile. Her eyes widened and whilst her heart rate sped up just a little, she noticed that something didn’t seem right with the gorgeous doctor standing before her. Lexi folded her free arm over her bare midriff and then found her voice, opening the door a little wider. “Denver, what are you doing here? Is everything okay?”
She was a little self-conscious about her lack of make up or real effort in her outfit, but her thoughts were more occupied with his unannounced visit, not that it wasn’t welcome at all. It just seemed unusual for him to appear when they hadn’t planned anything since their last date. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Denver! WORDS! 693 OUTFIT! Denny wasn’t entirely sure what had possessed him to travel so far away from his own place and his work. He knew he couldn’t be at the hospital; that was for sure. The little girl was stable and she was being closely monitored. She was going to be fine, Denver knew that, but he couldn’t be there. And he couldn’t be alone. When Lexi opened the door to her apartment, Denver had almost wished she wouldn’t have. At least then, he knew he wouldn’t be interrupting her with something so depressing. He shouldn’t have come. It was stupid, but he’d needed to see Lexi and make sure she was alright. Because for whatever reason, seeing that little girl almost die, made him just need to make sure everyone in his life was okay.
The young doctor shoved his fingers through his hair, pieces tearing out because of knots. “Are you busy?” he asked, avoiding the subject for the moment. He needed to think it all through. After all, he should have called Sarah to make sure everyone up there was good. But no; he’d driven straight to Lexi. And for once, he had no clue how he’d gotten there; he didn’t remember the trip at all. Denver shook his head, “Feel like getting kidnapped for a couple hours?” He asked, with a smirk and a quiet chuckle. He needed to be around Lexi, absolutely make sure that she was okay, safe and sound. And if she was in his arms, that would be even better.
Without even thinking about, Denver reached out as he took a step and gathered Lexi into his arms. He closed his eyes and silently thanked whichever deity that was listening in that he was so thankful she was okay. His job didn’t usually get to him so badly, but every now and then it hit him hard and he needed life around him, especially those people he cared about. And Lexi, though he hadn’t known her particularly all that long, she was included on that list. He enjoyed being around her, she made him smile and think, and secretly brush up on his history lessons on the internet. It wasn’t so much that he wanted to impress her exactly, but he did want to know what she was so interested in.
“I’m sorry I just stopped by. It’s rude of me,” he said, leaning back to look at her. He’d stopped off completely unannounced; with no real reason to be there other than he needed comfort. “I just really needed to see you,” he whispered, not wanting to openly admit that he needed the comfort. He couldn’t do that just yet; he wasn’t ready for that. After another moment, Denver stepped back and smiled mischievously. “Come on, then!” he said, taking her hand and tugging her softly out the door as she was. His car was parked right out front, so she didn’t have far to run in her slipper clad feet.
At his car, he helped Lexi into the passenger seat before racing around the front and slipping behind the wheel. “Ever spent the day lazing about?” he asked, starting the engine, shifting into gear and pulling into the surprisingly light traffic of Lexi’s street. Surprises weren’t his strong suit, obviously, or this would’ve been slightly better planned and executed. But really, there was no fun in that. He still had some rented DVDs at his apartment and snacks from Sarah’s visit, so there was no need to stop on the short journey to his apartment; a place Lexi had yet to be. There was a first for everything and apparently Denver was crossing a few off his list in a single day.

She could tell something wasn’t right when she opened the door. Denver didn’t look hurt or anything, but there was something about the way he was acting the look in his eyes and the strands of hair he pulled out running his fingers through it. She barely saw it, but when she did, instantly she reached out to pull his hand down from those messy locks that suited him so well. She didn’t like seeing him hurt himself and, as a girl, she knew only too well how painful that could really be. There was something bothering him and it worried the young brunette more than she could ever expect. “No, not really, I was just reading.”
She answered quickly before throwing him a puzzled expression at his proposition. “I didn’t know the victim got a choice in kidnapping.” She stated, her mind eased by his smirk, but the worry still lingered. He didn’t quite seem like himself; he seemed rattled by something and Lexi wanted to do whatever she could to make him feel okay again. After all, it was what he did for her. When he reached out and pulled her into his arms, Lexi let out a quiet squeak of surprise before wrapping her arms around his back. It wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy the warmth of his hugs or the idea of being close to him again, but it had caught her off-guard. She chuckled against his shirt and gave him a reassuring squeeze. Lexi didn’t know what was wrong with Denver today or what made him react like this, but if it made him feel better than so be it. She wanted to do what she could for him. “Denver, is everything okay?” She asked, not moving from his hold. She liked where she was, as impromptu as it seemed to be. She shook her head and waved his suggestion off with a flick of her wrist. “Nonsense. It isn’t rude at all. It’s a pleasant surprise. You always do manage to surprise me somehow.” She confessed with a soft smile. She really didn’t mind that he had showed up like this, or that he had come to her without calling first. Like she said, it was a nice surprise and a welcomed excuse to not spend the night in bed with some books. Smiling softly and not caring any more about the faint blush that filled her cheeks at his words, Lexi reached down for his hand. “Denver, what’s wrong?” She was sure the worry was clear in her dark eyes as she gazed up at him. There was clearly something playing on his mind and it was scaring Lexi. She had only known him for a short time, but he was always the one who made her smile and whilst he still seemed semi-okay, she knew there was something more to this arrival than a random need for social interaction. There wasn’t much she could probably do, like he could do for her, but she would try her best. Another squeak rose from her lips as he dragged her out of the door. She closed the wood behind her but resisted his pull slightly, laughing almost giddily. “Denny, I’m in my pyjamas!” She squealed, gesturing to her plain, baggy and entirely inappropriate outfit for one of their adventures. Plus, if the residents of this building saw her being dragged out of it like this, she could be certain they’d be telling Chelsea or asking questions her older sister had no answers to. “C’mon, let me get changed!” She had no make-up, no hair products, hell, no shoes – she was in her slipper booties! Still, she soon found herself in the passenger seat of his car, looking down at her outfit and staring as him slack jawed when he sat beside her. She knew he had mentioned kidnapping, but this was practically being kidnapped! She looked at him, still slightly in awe of what had just happened and it took her a few blinks to find her voice. “Lazing about? Not unless I was sick, no.” She liked keeping busy and always had something to do, even if it was reading history books or working on extra assignments. “Where exactly are we going? And you know, I should have left a note, right?” She didn’t even have her phone on her! [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Denver! WORDS! 704 OUTFIT! Lazy Days LYRICS! Denver didn’t think his emotions were an open book. He thought he was pretty good at keeping them to himself, and hidden. Either he was wrong, or Lexi was very good at reading him. He could see the concern, the worry in her eyes and her voice. He didn’t want that. He wanted to see that blush, her smile, hear her laugh; anything to get his heart rate down. “I believe since this isn’t a real kidnapping, you have a choice,” he said, smirking. Lexi wrapped in his arms made him relax just a bit more, and he could feel his heart slowing down. Was everything okay? It was now. Now that that little girl was stable and now that Lexi was in his arms, breathing and asking questions.
Denver smiled, reaching up to brush stray pieces of her dark locks from her face. “Good, I’m glad,” he said, pressing his lips to Lexi’s forehead. Was he alright? No, but he didn’t want to talk about it just yet. In the hallway, in Lexi’s building, where people could overhear, he couldn’t talk about it where there was the possibility of ears. As it was, he’d have to slice and dice the story he told her, to make sure he didn’t give any information away. He shook his head, “Not really, but I can’t talk about it just yet. It’s still running through my mind,” he told her honestly. “Give me a few more minutes and we’ll see.”
Denny chuckled, slowly coming back to himself. “You look absolutely beautiful,” he said, smiling. “Besides, there’s no need to change for this adventure.” Sitting behind the wheel, Denver took quick snatches of glances at Lexi, sitting in the passenger seat and felt himself finally relaxing. He shook his head at her questions and tugged his phone out of his pants pocket at a red light. “Text whomever you need to. You can let them know you’re safe, remind them there’s left over Chinese in the fridge, whatever you need to, but you’re not finding out our destination until we get there,” he said, making things up as he went along. Turning onto his street a few minutes later, Denver snuck another glance at Lexi, to see what she thought of the area. It wasn’t much; after all he wasn’t quite a doctor yet but close to it. His apartment wasn’t in a bad neighbourhood, but it wasn’t Lexi’s either.
Denver flicked his blinker, turned, went around the building to his usual parking spot and cut the engine. “We’re here,” he said, getting out of the car. After shutting his door, her went around the hood to the passenger side and opened the door for Lexi. She’d never been to his place before, and he was a tiny bit nervous about it all. But Sarah had gone out and basically redecorated the entire two bedroom apartment. Taking her hand in his, Denver walked across the parking lot to the doors, where he had to punch in his code, being in too much of a rush to dig out his keys from his pocket. At the elevator, he punched his floor and leaned back against the wall. When the elevator doors opened again, Denver squeezed Lexi’s hand and walked with her down the hall, past three doors, before stopping at the fourth and finally digging his keys out of his pocket. He unlocked the door and held it open. “Welcome to Casa Sawyer,” he said, stepping through after Lexi.

Lexi, if she had one talent, it was being able to see when people weren’t entirely happy. It wasn’t a skill she used much, understanding that sometimes people just couldn’t talk about things. She had been there herself and from staring in the mirror every day she had picked up ways to see when others were mirroring that same semi-broken expression that she had tried to hide back in high school. Most of the time, she could let it slide, but when it was someone she cared about, she panicked and needed to know they were okay and that was the case here. “Then my choice would be ‘lead’ the way.”
She answered with a soft smile. She had nothing better to do this afternoon and she was sure Denver would have something entertaining for them both to do. Despite her worry for the young doctor, Lexi couldn’t help but smile at his touch, a gentle blush filling her cheeks from his lips brushing against her forehead. Being around him always made her feel good and now she was used to that pesky blush being there whenever she was in his company. She nodded in understanding. Lexi remembered folk asking her questions and demanding answers when she just wasn’t ready to give them. If there was one thing she was good at, it was being patient. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pushed herself on her toes to give him another hug. “I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk. Whenever that might be.” She whispered, squeezing him gently before pulling back and smiling softly. It still amazed Lexi how no matter how comfortable she became around Denver he still had the capability to render her speechless. She dipped her head as the blush strengthened, but she followed him nevertheless, throwing him a curious gaze at his next words. What kind of adventure did he have planned? “Unless the adventure is a pillow fight, I don’t see how pyjamas are going to work!” She said, laughing lightly, her eyes trying to meet his. She stared blankly at his phone and then rested her hands in her lap, the device between her fingers as she brushed her hair from her face. “Like I memorise cell numbers.” She laughed before thinking for a moment. She knew her own number and if Chelsea beat her home then the cell was sitting on her dresser and Lexi knew her sister’s curiosity would drive her to look at it. Quickly, she typed in a quick message to tell her sister not to panic if she found this. “It’s a good job Chelsea is out otherwise she might have called dad and told him his baby had been kidnapped with a squeal and a slam of the door.” She joked, keeping his phone resting on her leg as he focused on driving. She peered out of the window, taking in the neighbourhood they were driving into. It wasn’t like the ones she was used to, but it didn’t look bad either. She didn’t care so much about where people lived or what their places looked like, so long as they were sanitary and actually liveable. A cute little bakery store caught her attention and she peered to get the name of it, hoping to google the address later. Just the smell of bakeries sent Lexi into a quiet haven of bliss, though that was something she shared with no one but herself. She jumped a little, snapping from her thoughts when Denver spoke again. She looked out of the window, trying to guess where ‘here’ was. She assumed it was his place by the apartment building they had pulled up in the lot of. When Denver opened the door for her, she hopped out, shiver slightly at the cool air. It was not the kind of weather or time of year to venture outdoors in clothes like this. Taking his hand, she smiled again and used her other hand to pull down her cropped shirt, feeling a little weirded out by being out like this, even if they were only crossing a parking lot. Her smile widened when he introduced her to his place and though it was nothing like Lexi’s, she adored it. It was so quaint and totally seemed to suit him, as odd as it sounded to say that. Her brown eyes fell on the candles and the flower arrangement and her smile returned. She figured that may have been Sarah’s touch and had visions of the much spoken about sister demanding a “woman’s touch” to what was, in theory, a guy’s place. It felt much more homely than her overly clean apartment and she spun on her heel to face Denver, a twinkle in her eyes. “This place is great. I love it.” She told him honestly, spinning back around for another look. She didn’t know why exactly she was so fascinated, but she reckoned it had something to do with it not being like everything she had grown up with. Denny was really pleased, and thankful that Lexi didn’t mind being dragged across New York completely clueless; because she was. He hadn’t told her a thing about what was happening, or going to happen. He just took her hand and dragged her through her building and out the door to his car without so much as giving her time to grab her phone, leave a note or change her clothes; though he didn’t particularly mind any of it. It just meant that they wouldn’t be interrupted and she’d be comfortable. Plus, he liked what she was wearing. He’d never seen her in pajamas. When they were together, she was always so put together, even if it was jeans and a tee. But this, there had been no thought put into it at all, no time or effort and yet, he was pretty sure this was his favourite of her outfits.
He really was grateful Lexi was so understanding. What more could he ask for, really? She didn’t mind that he just showed up on her doorstep unannounced, she could wait until he was ready to talk to listen. She was fantastic. Denny took a deep breath, relieved and just let everything for the time being. He was still trying to get all this thoughts together on the subject. “There are enough there now, that a pillow fight could be in the cards, if you want it,” he said laughing at the thought. He turned his head to look at Lexi, just for a second or two, and then turned back to the road. He’d memorized her number; though that was probably more out of habit than anything. When he texted or called someone enough times, it was easy to have it engrained.
Denver laughed, “It really is, or I’m sure SWAT would be after us right about now. Though I suspect we wouldn’t have gotten this far,” he mused, focusing on steering the car. Before long, he had the car parked and Lexi in his apartment. It was the first time she’d ever been there and it was a little bit nerve racking for the young Canadian doctor. He didn’t really know what to expect from her by way of reaction. He wasn’t sure what to think, but he loved that she loved his place. It was by no means anything like Lexi’s own apartment, he had things lying around all over the place like he’d forgotten to pick it all up but his home fit him, and he loved it. He had some small trinkets from Newfoundland lying about like moose figurines and some hockey memorabilia, and the flag of his province like a poster on his one wall. Of course, he shouldn’t have expected less coming from Lexi.
She was one of those people that didn’t judge. She took everything in stride and Denny absolutely adored that about the petite brunette. “Coffee?” he asked, taking his shoes off. He slipped off his jacket and tossed it onto the back of a chair before going into his kitchen. He didn’t mind if Lexi’s curiosity got the best of her and she wanted to look around. He was at the cupboard, taking out two mugs before he stopped and just set the cups down. He turned around and started out of the kitchen. “Hang on. I’ll be right back,” he said, leaving the kitchen and heading straight to his room. There was no reason for Lexi to feel uncomfortable lounging around his place in her pajamas alone. In his room, he shut the door and went through his drawers for something his own set of pajamas.
He normally fell into his bed wearing just his boxers and the odd time he just sort of fell in wearing his sweat pants. But he rarely wore actual pajamas though he knew he had some around. It was Sarah’s go-to Christmas present and this year had been no different. After a quick search, he found a pair of plaid pants and changed into those before picking out a long sleeved tee at random. He needed out of his usual work clothes of dress pants and button down. Once he was changed, he went back out in search of Lexi, wondering where she’d found herself in the apartment.

If Lexi had learnt one thing in her life it was that there was always something beneath the surface. It was why she never joined in when her ‘friends’ chose to tease someone and why she always stuck around to make sure someone was alright later. If someone looked glum, Lexi always enquired if they were okay. Sometimes it was unwanted concern and they weren’t very grateful of Lexi’s worry for them, but she would rather them respond angrily to her than her not ask at all. That was why she would patiently wait for Denver to feel ready to talk, but she wouldn’t ignore the fact that something was bothering him. If he hoped she might forget about it later on, he was wrong; Lexi was not the kind of girl to ignore something, even something trivial, when it made him run to see her in the first place.
She cared about him, despite only knowing him for a short while, and she wanted to be able to cheer him up the same way he did her, sometimes, she believed, without even realising it. Lexi had trusted him from the moment they had gone their separate ways in Central Park; him with Duke and her with a giant lump on her head. Some may have called her foolish for putting her faith in him so soon after meeting him, but Lexi didn’t see it to be a problem when he was such a great guy who didn’t look at her in the way some people did when they saw where she lived, or figured out she had money to her name. That was why she had no worry or fear about him ‘kidnapping’ her now. She was fairly certain her folks wouldn’t be getting a call demanding a ransom. Maybe she didn’t know where they were going or what he had planned, but she felt comfortable, despite her attire, and at ease in his presence. Though, she may have put her foot down if he tried to drag her shopping or out to dinner while she was dressed in her pyjamas. There was a limit somewhere!
Lexi stared at him as though he had sprouted three heads. Her father could be overbearingly protective, especially over his youngest daughter, but was that really how Denver thought things might go down? “Who exactly do you think my dad is? The president?”
The money her family invested into the city did provide the Ryanne Patriarch with some sway over a few things, but they were trivial in overview and Lexi was fairly certain he didn’t have a S.W.A.T team on speed dial. “It’s alright though. If they do show up, I’ll convince them you’re harmless but just have a bit of an odd need to steal away small brunettes when they’re dressed for bed.” She joked, shrugging casually before looking out of the window. She didn’t know what his reaction would be, or if she was helping to cheer him up, but she was certain she would collapse into giggles if she looked at him after saying that. This whole thing was still a little surreal for her. The thing Lexi adored most about his place was how homely it felt as soon as she had stepped through the door. The ornaments and little pieces of memorabilia told short tales of his life back home and made the apartment more welcoming in itself. Sometimes Lexi wondered if her apartment or family home had been built to live in or to be admired from afar. Décor was minimal and everything was light in colour. The apartment she shared with Chelsea had few photographs hanging in the open space and ornaments stretched to as far as three vases that the girls filled with fresh flowers each week. Her bedroom had a more sentimental feel to it with a collage of some of the nights out with friends and various trinkets bought back from vacation or from her childhood that she couldn’t part with; like an old lion that she had had for as long as she could remember and as tatty as he looked now, she simply couldn’t throw him out or leave him at home in her old room. “Coffee sounds great.” She replied, still admiring Denver’s New York home with a soft smile. When he suddenly vanished into another room, Lexi blinked in confusion for a few short seconds. Awkwardly, she stood in the middle of the room, her dark eyes surveying everything in sight. She might have felt comfortable around Denver, but right now she felt a little out of place. She always did whenever she was in someone’s home for the first few times. Not knowing where anything was, what was off limits to touch or ask about…it put her a little out of her comfort zone. She would have made herself useful and made the coffee whilst he was busy, but she didn’t know where he kept anything and to snoop around might make her look nosy or see something he didn’t want her to see. She respected people’s privacy too much at times, but she didn’t want to upset him further or make him angry with her. Instead, she fixed her thoughts on how she could cheer him up. Usually, she was better with words than actions, but because she didn’t know what was wrong she also didn’t know what to say. Her brown eyes fell on the cushions scattered on the couch and a smile crossed her lips. She crept closer and grabbed the one she deemed to be the biggest and softest before hiding by the door Denver was behind. A few seconds later when he emerged, Lexi jumped out and hit him lightly in the chest with her playful weapon. The thought that hitting someone might not be the best way to cheer them up did cross her mind, but so did their brief conversation in the car where he didn’t dismiss the possibility of this idea either. She took his pyjamas in as she hopped back a step and chuckled fondly. “You look cute, and we match.” She gestured to her own plaid bottoms of a different colour. “So, did you have a desperate craving for a pyjama party?” She queried, still not 100% sure on why she was there, not that she minded. Denver shouldn’t have really reacted the way he had. What had happened at the hospital had happened before, but then the child was older, and wasn’t his personal patient. He was just there observing what happened in case it was to happen again; because they all knew it would. Not every battle would turn victorious like todays. But it was still something that unnerved him and shook him to the core. Denny hated that part of the job, but the pros out weighed the cons and he could usually push himself to be completely removed while everything was happening all at once. It was afterward, when things were stable again, that he was thrown back into the emotions of his job.
And just being around Lexi brightened his spirits, so there were a couple reasons he’d gone straight to her for comfort and a welcoming ear. Denver shrugged a big grin on his face. “No, but that would be what I’d do if I had a beautiful daughter who’d been taken from her home mysteriously by a man I didn’t know,” he said, shaking his head. Call him over protective, but if that were the case, he would have been on the phone with the police as soon as he’d had the chance. Denver stole a quick glance at the back of Lexi’s head. She was facing the window, so he couldn’t get a good look at her face, and tell what she was thinking. “Just once particular brunette,” he said, casually.
It wasn’t just the change of clothes that Denver had in mind. Duke routinely managed to shut the bedroom door when he finally found his way in there for a nap. He was much like an actual person; only he couldn’t open the door when he was awake so he just passed out on his bed again. And Duke was there; sprawled out on Denny’s bed, head on one of the pillows, tongue hanging out with his stuffed bear. He looked like a child, but as soon as Denver walked into the room, Duke’s head snapped up, alert and happy to see his owner home.
Once he was dressed, he opened the door and was greeted with a pillow to the chest. He stared at Lexi as she jumped back, laughing. “Well that was unfair. Attacking an unarmed man,” he said, reaching out and grabbing at Lexi’s sides, purposefully missing by inches. “The thought had crossed my mind,” he said, chuckling himself. Duke brushed against his leg and Denver’s attention turned to his canine roommate. “Did you see that Duke? Go get a pillow!” he said, pointing to the living room and watching his dog run off. He turned to look at Lexi with a wicked smirk on his face. “Careful, Duke has a mean streak. He loves a good pillow fight,” Denver warned, grabbing at Lexi’s side playfully, this time actually grabbing her and tickling her side. He moved behind her in the short hallway before Duke came back with a pillow held tight in his mouth, tail wagging happily. When he got close, Duke shook his head, hitting their legs with the pillow in his mouth as Denny laughed. Sarah’s training was different from his when it came to the dog, but he had to admit, this little trick was funny.
“D, enough,” he said, taking Lexi’s hand in his. “Let’s go get that coffee, and see how many questions you have,” he said, starting for the kitchen again. When they got there, Denny let go of Lexi’s hand to try and figure out the workings of the coffee maker Sarah bought; he still wasn’t completely used to it yet. “I figured you could check out the collection of movies I’ve got and we could have a little movie night. And maybe you’ll find out why I’ve dragged you out of your house and over to mine,” he said, willing himself to be ready to tell her everything. It was going to be now or never, when they were sitting on the couch, with a movie playing in the background.

Lexi didn’t know what had happened to upset Denver so, but she didn’t mind that he had come to her one bit. In fact, she kind of liked that he had showed up at her front door unannounced. It meant a lot that he could come to her with whatever this was, even if it was to forget about whatever was bothering him. In the short while they had known each other, Lexi had been surprised by how easy he was to talk to and she hoped that he felt the same way with her. They did share stories and tales from their lives like old friends would do, but sharing memories was different from sharing problems. She had asked him once before how he was able to cope with his job and the small children involved. The very thought of it when they were talking almost pushed Lexi to tears at times and she figured that it must get to him at some point. In her mind, right now, she figured that he was just stressed after perhaps a long day at work. She just hoped she could cheer him up easily enough!
The blush touched her cheeks once more and she bit her lip to hide the shy smile. “That’s why daughters usually keep their dads out of the loop for some time when handsome men are involved.”
She said, smirking and glancing sideways at Denver. Shaking her head, she brushed her hair from her eyes and then rubbed her chin, chuckling softly. “My dad would probably have background checks ran on the guys my sisters have dated before.” She had never been a big one for dating and whilst there had been guys in the past there were very few who she thought important enough to meet her overprotective father. The blush deepened, her cheeks flushed a dark scarlet shade as she turned back around to face Denver. How he always managed to make her blush so much, she would never know, but there was something about him that made her feel so warm inside, especially when he said things like that. “Well, she doesn’t mind, so feel free to steal her away anytime you like.” She replied, equally as casually as he had. Lexi loved how comfortable their conversations were and how they could say things like that without freaking out the other. It was nice and it was nicer that he was someone away from the social world her family and most of her friends orbited in. The young historian laughed and jumped back from his hands. “I was kidnapped, this is self-defence…sort of.” She joked, standing upright and placing her hands on her hips as though it would help prove her point. Her chestnut eyes looked down at the creature she had a soft spot for ever since the day in the park and she smiled, reaching down to scratch Duke’s ears fondly as he ran by her legs. She didn’t have time to respond as Denver’s fingers caught her sides and she jumped slightly, squealing with laughter as she squirmed away from him, elbows tight at her ribs in a defensive position. “Now that‘s unfair! You know I’m ridiculously ticklish!” She said, pouting playfully as she pretended to sulk. She laughed when Duke returned with the pillow and joined in the ‘fight’. It was one of the cutest things she had ever seen and she crouched down to cuddle the friendly dog, unable to stop her giggles until Denver instructed his loyal Duke to stop. In the kitchen, she hopped up to sit on the counter top next to the coffee machine out of old habit and smiled at Denver from her seat where she gently swung her legs, brushing his knee playfully with her slipper as she merrily listened to him speak. “That sounds like a pretty good plan, Doctor Sawyer. What movies do you like best?” It had been a long time since she had had a movie night with anyone; folk seemed too busy these days. She reached out to rest her hand on his arm and smiled sincerely at him. “Whenever you’re ready, okay? I don’t have to know anything if you don’t want to talk about it.” She told him honestly. She’d rather him be comfortable and enjoy this evening, rather than grow awkward and uneasy by a potentially serious topic. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Denver! They hadn’t known each other long, yet Denver felt like he could go to Lexi with anything and she’d listen to him and give him her opinion on the matter. In this case, he didn’t so much need her opinion as to know she was still breathing, still around; so long as she was her beautiful, perfect, happy self, he was okay. He’d text Sarah later, make sure everyone up there was alright and promise to take some time off to visit; like he did when this sort of thing happened. Thankfully, his track record was pretty damn good, at least, his superiors gave him what was considered the easy cases; the nonthreatening cases, where the cancers or illnesses weren’t as far along, weren’t as serious. Of course, he was given a file every now and then that was serious and he lost a patient, or like this, had a near lose. Oh, Denny would tell her what happened, but because he needed to hear that she was perfectly alright; like he was afraid his eyes and ears were deceiving him.
Denver knew how well girls’ kept their father’s out of things. That sole reason was why he’d been recruited more often than not when it came to his sister’s life. He was the one she called when he was in town; not her father. And given the choice, she already admitted that he would be her first call if anything happened; in a different country or not. Their mother was her second but her father wouldn’t be able to handle anything. He still thought of her as his little six year old baby girl; daddy’s princess. “I would hope to have a better relationship with my daughter than that,” he mused, thinking about it now that it was in a sort of backwards way, the topic.
Denver nodded, agreeing. “Good idea,” he said, smiling devilishly. If he had the means now, all of Sarah’s boyfriends present one and exes would have gone through a serious background check. Well, at least the last one; this one, though they hadn’t met yet and Den figured it’d be over before they got the chance, he liked him all the same. At least, Sarah was happy and treated well, so that was really all he could hope for as her brother. Though, this kid was aware that one wrong turn and Den would be on the first flight to Corner Brook. Denny smirked and stole a glance at Lexi. “That might just happen again, who knows?” he said, turning his attention back to the task at hand.
Denny shook his head laughing. Of all the things in the world he thought he’d be doing today, having an impromptu pseudo pillow fight in the hallway of his apartment was not on the list at all. There were many things he could be doing, but most of them involved the hospital and the nurses instructed the young Doctor that he couldn’t be there for the time being. “Oh self-defense, huh?” he said just as Duke moved out of sight. Denver’s laughed erupted from him with Lexi’s squealing giggles. He absolutely loved her laugh; it always brought out his own happy laughter. “All the more fun for me,” he said, brushing his fingers along her side again.
The young doctor smirked as his lovely guest made herself quite at home sitting on the countertop. “That question is unanswerable,” he answered, diplomatically. “Besides, there aren’t just actions flicks and guy movies out there. I have a sister, who visits often enough to have her own collection,” he added, starting on the second cup. “Go look for yourself. Mi casa es su casa,” he invited. Denver looked up from the coffee maker, first looking at Lexi’s hand and then her face. She was so sweet to him and so comforting. His smile was a bit pained, because the topic wasn’t something he wanted between them so soon and yet, it was almost consuming every part of his mind at the moment. “When we’re settled, we’ll talk,” he said, nodding.
With both coffees finished, Denver carried both out to the living room and set them down on the table. With his hands now free, Denver pointed to the shelves of movies. “Have a look, see what catches your eye and we’ll watch it,” he said, smiling. There were so many different kinds, it was even difficult for him to choose sometimes when he really just wanted to sit down and watch something that would take his mind off of everything outside his apartment.

Luckily, Chelsea would return far too drunk to check on her little sister. At least that was what Lexi hoped for. She didn’t know how long it would take to get Denny back to his usual, happy self, but she wanted to sit it out with him. She didn’t want to have to keep checking the clock and reminding him that she probably should get home before anyone worried. After all, she was twenty two years of age and she hadn’t had a curfew since she was in high school. Being the baby of the family and with her past issues, everyone just seemed to worry about her that little bit more. Sometimes, she wanted to scream at them that she was fine, that she wasn’t about to have a mental breakdown and start shaving her hair off, or run away and live a life of crime. She just wanted someone to trust her and have faith that she was capable of fending for herself now.
Her laughter erupted from her at his comment, her abs almost aching with the force of the reaction. She smiled adoringly over at him and reached out to gently touch his hand. Lexi shook her head softly as another wave of the giggles came over her. “Oh, you poor naïve man. You could be best friends with your daughter but the second that first love shows up with the perfect smile and most beautiful eyes, she’ll try and keep him a secret from you, just like we all do.”
She shrugged and then continued. “It’s nothing personal, but we’re secretly terrified of how our dad’s will react when the day comes that they have to start letting us go. That, and movies have exaggerated the over-protective dad role to instil fear into teenagers of both genders all around the world.” She added, only partially joking. If a daughter was the apple in her father’s eye then there was always the chance of a bad reaction, that he’d never trust a hormonal teenage boy. She chuckled again at the thought and then shrugged. “Believe me, she’d keep you on your toes alright.” Rolling her eyes, she shook her head. “Nobody is perfect and we all have skeletons to fight with daily. There’s no need for anyone to drag them to the surface. What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? That, and genuine trust in humanity?” She shrugged it off and glanced to her side, flicking a bit of fluff from her arm and trying to avoid any more deep, serious thoughts that may escape the silence of her mind and manifest in random comments that Denver probably didn’t need to hear now. Lexi smirked and shyly glanced over at him. “Well, a little warning might be nice if it’s going to become a habit. A bit more thought can go into the outfit.” Luckily, these weren’t her rattiest pyjamas but at the same time, she did have cuter. These were just her comfy pair that often accompanied the nights in with college assignments. Lexi bit back her own giggles at his laughter and then folded her arms across her chest, trying to stand tall and defend her argument, however lame and false it might be. “Yes. I was innocently reading when you kidnapped me from my apartment, brought me here and now? Who’s to say you won’t turn into Patrick Bateman on me?” She quirked her eyebrow and was obviously joking. Despite the short while they had known each other for, Lexi trusted Denver completely and she was a little worried that she might actually blindly follow him wherever he told her to go. She squealed again as his fingers found her sides and this time placed her hands firmly on his chest, attempting to hold him at arm’s length, though she knew the attempt was futile. It would barely take any of his strength to close the gap again and beat her at this game, but that didn’t mean it couldn’t be fun. “I never had you pegged as the mean kind.” She threw him the puppy dog eyes and stuck her bottom lip out in an exaggerated pout. She smirked across at him and met his eyes with a challenging gaze of her own. “Oh? And you think because I’m a girl I couldn’t possibly like guy movies?” She turned her nose upwards and pretended to be offended. “And maybe I love Bruce Willis in a vest.” Personally, he was one actor she couldn’t stand, but he was also the only action star she could think of. Lexi silently admitted that he was right; she was much more at home with a chick flick or tear jerking drama. However, she could balance this out for them both, just to make sure neither of them overloaded on sappiness or explosions. She was about to hop from the countertop when she noticed his pained smile. Silently, she nodded and leaned closer to give him a quick hug, hesitating for a second before kissing his cheek reassuringly. She had already verbalised that she would be there for him, but she wanted to reiterate her point without sounding like a broken record. Her hand trailed down to his before she left the kitchen, her eyes settling on the DVD collection as she moved closer to read the titles. Lexi hummed to herself, a little classical melody that she had learnt to play on the piano when she was little. It was always the tune that popped into her head nowadays and her hands carefully extracted a number of DVD’s, most of them light-hearted and comedic, but with a few ‘man-ish’ ones, just to make Denver feel a bit better. There was even a horror movie in there, though she would end up hiding behind a pillow and shaking if was played. If he needed cheering up though, then she figured this was the best way to work it, rather than grabbing all of her own favourites and for him, she could tolerate an hour or two of terror. “Any of these grab your fancy?” She asked, handing them over to him. He was slowly coming out of his mood but he knew the minute he sat down with Lexi curled up next to him and a blanket wrapped around them and he finally told her what had been bothering her, it would make her upset; and he did not want that. He wanted her to stay smiling, laughing and happy. He didn’t want to see her sad again, and he knew that as soon as he opened his mouth, she’d get distressed. It didn’t matter if she was feeling bad for him or for the little girl; he didn’t want to see it at all. He’d barely known her and had seen her with tears in her eyes and that had been quite enough for the young Newfoundland native. He was just glad that he was coming out of his stupor.
Denver put on his best grumble, “Well, a guy can hope, can’t he?” he said quietly, but knew he’d been loud enough for Lexi to hear. He knew all about the relationship a girl could have with her father, he’d witnessed it all unfold up until the moment he’d left for school. He wasn’t in Corner Brook anymore, watching first hand, but he still heard all about it, if not on a daily basis than at the very least a weekly one. Sarah ran to him with everything, so her relationship with her father wasn’t much of anything. At least, it wasn’t from Den’s point of view. But he wasn’t around as much anymore, so she could have grown to include him in her teenage problems, though he highly doubted that with the amount of phone calls and text messages he received on an almost daily basis.
“What can I say? We’re protective and don’t want anyone we care about getting hurt?” he suggested. Admittedly, it was weak. There really wasn’t any reason for a father or brother to run a name. Short of being the child of a Politian, there wasn’t any good or plausible reason to have the checks run. Denny smirked, glancing at Lexi. “You look beautiful, Lexi,” he practically whispered. She was so beautiful it often struck Den at odd moments whenever he was around her how happy and beautiful she was. He almost didn’t believe she was with him; and yet. But then she grabbed his hand and dragged him all over the place, telling all about the history of this or that and then laughing like she didn’t want to sound like a history buff. “But you’re not getting any warnings,” he said, smirking.
Denver raised his brow and looked at Lexi like she was crazy. “American Psycho? Really? Besides that, I’m pretty sure kidnapping was not part of his repertoire,” he said, shaking his head with a chuckle. He was kidding as well. He stayed at arm’s length for a minute before taking one step and lifting her off her feet to spin her around. “I don’t think I would consider myself mean, a little foolish maybe,” he said, laughing as he set her down gently. “You do make one hell of an adorable face, though. Very cute,” he said, letting his hand brush against her cheek.
Denver scoffed. “You will only find one movie of his in there and technically it doesn’t count because he was barely in it for five minutes. Otherwise, it’s a great movie,” he said, honestly wishing that man wasn’t in the Expendables. The movie really could have done without him. In the living room, he moved to Lexi’s side, watching with interest as she picked up a few different movies. When she handed over the small pile she’d chosen, he went through noting each before setting all but one of Sarah’s chick flicks on the table. Normally, he really didn’t like them, but his darling sister made him watch them whenever she was in town and so he’d grown to tolerate them. And he could certainly do that easily for Lexi. A couple hours watching something Lexi liked didn’t bother him in the least; he was happy to do it. “Take a seat and I’ll set it up,” he said, moving around her to his media setup. He turned on the DVD player, put the movie in as he changed the channel to the proper one and brought he remote back with him to the couch where he sat down in the corner next to his pretty brunette guest.
He didn’t exactly want to talk, but he knew it would eat him up inside if he didn’t. So, he grabbed the throw off the back of the couch and draped it around them both before wrapping his arm around Lexi and pulling her closer to his side. “I believe I promised you an explanation,” he said, starting. He didn’t want to, but he knew Lexi would understand, so he took a deep breath and continued. “And I’m going to say sorry now in case I upset you in anyway,” he added, tracing small circles on Lexi’s arm. He closed his eyes, trying to bring everything he’d felt in that moment at the hospital back into his mind. It wasn’t hard to do; it was still to fresh in his mind to be easily forgotten.
“I almost lost a patient today. A little girl, she’s seven and very sick. I know she’s terminal but I still have hope that she’ll live longer and won’t leave us before she’s grown. At most, we can hope for double digits, but today wasn’t positive and we almost lost her, Lexi. She almost died right in front of me while I was shouting orders and trying my hardest to get her stable.” He didn’t think he would tear up when he told her the basic details. He couldn’t go into any greater detail without letting anything private slip, so he’d kept it simple, censoring himself properly.
He closed his eyes and sighed, letting out that long breath slowly. “When I showed up at your doorstep it was right after that. I drove straight there. It’s odd because I knew you were okay. I knew it but I had to make sure with my own eyes.” He stopped for a second to figure out his words. “When they’re so young, there’s more care and you get closer to them. And when something like this happens, at least for me, it hits closer to home than I’d like so I have to make sure everyone else I care about it alright and it was just that one that was hurt,” he said, falling quiet. He didn’t know what Lexi would make of it all, he just hoped she wouldn’t think him crazy somehow.

She smiled, her dark eyes holding the silent chuckle as she studied the grumbling expression he bore. “Of course you can hope. In fact, it’s probably best that you do. Imagine the paranoia you’d be feeling each time she said there was nothing going on or nothing to worry about.”
In her experience, they were probably the biggest lies any teenage girl spoke. She had done anyway and it had been about the tiniest trivial thing to the biggest problem she had suffered through. It always sounded better to keep it personal and a secret, but in retrospect that was probably the worst idea she ever had, though she could hardly argue that she had learnt from it when she still did it now. Lexi threw him a look at his suggestion that clearly spoke volumes, mainly; “Do you think I’m going to buy that?”. A soft laugh escaped her lips and her eyes sparkled with affection as she tilted her head before speaking. “I don’t want anyone I care about getting hurt either, but there’s a wonderful thing called revenge that usually comes in pretty handy.” She smirked, remember the countless times her sisters had teamed up to get revenge on an ex-boyfriend or two who had broken a Ryanne heart. There had been slashed tyres, tampered yearbooks, ripped football jerseys…nothing too major, but enough to make them feel better and for him to get the message. It was therapeutic in some ways and Lexi loved how the four girls came together like witches around a cauldron to concoct what social homicide they could commit on some brainless jock who was trying to make his way around most of the women in NYC. That oh-so-familiar blush returned to her cheeks with more force than before as she barely caught his nearly whispered words. No girl could hate hearing that, but what Lexi hated was how it always rendered her speechless and left her closely resembling a tomato whenever Denver said it to her. She dipped her head, hoping her hair could conceal her burning cheeks as much as possible as she bit her lip, silently wishing there was something she could say instead of sitting there like an idiot. She pouted childishly, her cheeks cooling down as she finally found some words to say. “But if I get a warning then I can bring munchy food and really get all snuggled up for an impromptu pyjama party.” She tried to argue, hoping she could change his mind. She liked surprises and she loved spontaneity, but at the same time, Lexi liked being prepared for anything and everything and today had been the first time in a long time that she had been successfully caught off guard. The laugh came from her lips before she could stop it, but her fingers covered her own quivering lips as she gathered the breath to defend her point. “Well, you might have improved on his methods. If you kidnap someone instead of hiring them or inviting them like he did then there’s probably a less likely chance of the cops coming straight to you and demanding answers.” Usually, Lexi wasn’t the kind of girl who enjoyed that sort of book or movie, but American Psycho had been recommended to her by her favourite high school teacher and she simply loved it. It was the odd one out on the slender bookcase in her bedroom, but it was also one of the most read. Another squeal left her lips as her feet left the ground and her hands gripped his shoulders tightly for a second as her reflexes kicked in before the laughter came again, echoing around his apartment. “Fine, you’re not mean…just a kidnapper who likes to tease his victim.” She laughed, leaning into his hand instinctively as it brushed her cheek. “Years of practice playing daddy’s little girl.” She joked, her hands moving from his shoulders now she was stable and standing on her own two feet again. She clapped her hands gleefully and then came forth with the truth. “Good, because I hate that man. I don’t know what he did to me, but whenever I see him, I feel overcome with rage.” And Lexi was almost eternally calm or passive, at least. She just couldn’t explain the Bruce Willis thing, no matter how hard she tried. She was just grateful that she wouldn’t have to pick from a selection of Die Hard movies or anything else that had him, vests and exploding helicopters in. She wanted to cheer Denny up and make him feel better, but there was a line and Bruce Willis was that line; she simply couldn’t do that. She curled up on the couch, tucking her feet up at the side of her and leaning back into the soft cushions as she waited for the handsome doctor to join her. Lexi snuggled under the throw and leaned into Denny’s side a little more. She was about to tell him that he didn’t need to talk about this now, but he seemed determined and before she could open her mouth he was speaking again, her eyebrows furrowing as he apologised to her first. Instead of responding verbally to it, she reached across under the throw to grab his free hand, hoping to make it easier for him. When they had first met, Lexi had commented about how she didn’t know how he coped in his job and now she was thinking the same thing. She listened, but she quickly understood his apology. Her eyes grew watery and she quickly blinked them dry again; this was her trying to cheer him up and she didn’t want it to turn the other way around because he caught a glimpse of her sorrow. Still, the thought of someone so young never being able to experience half of the amazing things life would have to offer later was not something anyone could easily shrug off. She squeezed his hand in her own, leaned in closer to him; did anything to try and comfort him and herself, in a way. Lexi sat in silence until he was totally finished and then took a moment, just staring at him in awe and amazement for a few seconds before she opened her mouth. She shifted her position slightly so that she could see him more clearly and so she could give him a proper hug, her arms closing around him as she breathed in his scent. “You are the sweetest guy to ever exist, do you know that?” Pulling back, she let her hand rest against his cheek and smiled softly at him, hoping her eyes showed no signs of the moisture that had almost spilt a few seconds before. “I don’t know how to make any of this better, but the fact that you care so much about them even when others might have given up hope is more than admirable. I don’t think I can even begin to understand what it must feel like for you, but I know for a fact that patients and their families feel so much better when they have a doctor who genuinely cares like you do, rather than someone who just wants higher statistics to boast about at tee-off.” Her own doctor had been the latter and it made her feel sick. However, that was not what this was about and she kept to her point, whatever one it was she was trying to make. “And I am okay, you’re right, but I’m almost honoured that you came to me. I’m here whenever you need to kidnap or call me. Just so you know, okay?” Her thumb brushed against his cheekbone and she smiled affectionately at him, not even caring about the movie right now, but wanting to make sure he was okay. “I wish I knew how else I could make this better.” She confessed in a whisper, finally running out of words to say and not even knowing where to begin with actions right now. The soft red hue returned to her cheeks and she smiled at him, hoping she hadn’t rambled on too much or made anything worse. [/blockquote][/blockquote] • • • TAGGED! Denver! Denny smirked. He didn’t know what he’d do with a child; especially a daughter. But he knew he’d try and do what he did for his sister; just be there for her, listen to her when she had a problem to work out and just give her the best advice he could think of. That, or tell her to go talk to her mother about it all, she’d have better advice because she’d been through it all before. Den shrugged, chuckling. “Well, I tried at least,” he said. He and revenge weren’t exactly on speaking terms; as in he’d never actually taken revenge out on someone. He’d been on 3 sports teams, if there was ever a need to exact revenge on some idiot, they usually did it, and left whoever wasn’t interested out of it. They just told him about it after the fact. He thought he’d been a pretty good guy in high school, testing the waters and all. There were a few guys on the football team that had gotten what was coming to them, but Denny had usually steered away from those people. “Revenge and I aren’t close friends,” he said, shaking his head.
Denver didn’t notice Lexi’s face turn bright red, he’d had his eyes on the road, trying to turn but stuck behind some idiot who didn’t understand the concept of turning lanes and lights. It was alright though, he got through after a moment, but by then they were already passed the subject of his blurted compliment. Den shook his head, grinning. “Well, maybe next time I intend on kidnapping you for the day, I’ll make sure to send you a quick text. Something cryptic, perhaps?” Something like “Be there in ten, be ready –D” would be fitting he thought. From that, she’d get absolutely nothing, but it would be amusing to imagine her freaking out a little bit, wondering what was going to happen. “Maybe we’ll think up a code word,” he added, joking. There would be a next time, but he hoped it would be just as random as this time was, for both of them.
“Teasing you is fun,” he said, smiling. That light blush that dusted her cheeks when he complimented her. That cute smile, he was smitten. Den shook his head, laughing. “Bruce Willis is just... annoying I think,” he said agreeing. There was just something about the man that made you want to hit something; or throw pillow at the TV, which he’d done before. But it was time to spill what had been bothering him, now that they were curled up on the couch together. He couldn’t keep it bottled up forever, he knew that. But he should have known. Lexi was so sweet and compassionate. It was a wonder he wasn’t falling for her faster than he was! Denny’s smile was sad, but it was still there. “You just being here is magic. And I don’t play golf,” he added, gathering her in his arms again. Denver’s lips pressed lightly against Lexi’s cheek. He was so glad she’d come with him, it meant so much more than words could really express.
